Four Top Audiobook (有声读物) Apps
Scribd
If you’re looking to combine your audiobook listening with e-books and news publications, Scribd might be the app for you. Its massive library includes a healthy balance of traditionally published books, bestsellers, and Scribd originals. Scribd also runs an associated program, which gives you one free month for every friend you invite, and gives your friend a two-month trial. If you're a writer, Scribd also has an open publishing platform to help you self-publish your audiobooks in minutes.
Kobo Books
Best known as an e-book retailer, Kobo Books also offers audiobooks on its platform. You get unlimited access to over 100,000 audiobooks in its library for only a few dollars. The app also does a good job organizing your purchased books, and its in-app statistics are brilliant for readers, knowing your reading habits in detail, while suggesting new recommended titles based on your history.
eStories
With over 120,000 different types of audiobooks to choose from, eStories starts off with a half-price offer for your first 3 months, and then switches to a higher-priced subscription. Members get discounted prices on additional audiobooks as well as other benefits such as extra credits and extended periods of use. As a member, you also get 30 days to return a book if you don’t like it. Additionally, the app provides unlimited storage for your own audio that you can upload.
Libby
Libby lets you borrow e-books and audiobooks from your local library. A library membership lets you access several thousand audiobooks on its app entirely free of cost. While the availability of titles depends on the library you're a member of, you’d still be getting free access to a lot of books that you’d otherwise have to pay for. Yu Zeling, an award-winning master of paper cutting, fills her studio with cutouts of animals, people, and scenes that are so vivid that they seem to leap from the walls. Her art covers village life in Ansai, a rural district in Shaanxi Province.
Ms. Yu came to paper cutting in the late 1970s as naturally as she breathed the earthy air. “We were very poor, and when it was time to celebrate the New Year, we all put paper-cuts on the windows to decorate our houses,” she says, recalling the holiday at her childhood home. Ms. Yu and others are working to keep the folk art alive, even as it evolves away from its roots as adornment for farmhouses.
The art originated in China in the centuries after paper was invented in A. D. 105. Full of auspicious(吉利的) symbols from daily life, the decorations represented good weather, many offspring, long life, wealth, and happiness.
Using newspaper, Ms. Yu first practiced cutting the image of a Chinese national flag that she saw in a school textbook. She cut it 100 times before she was satisfied. Then her aunt took over, introducing her to increasingly complicated traditional themes.
Ms. Yu was later invited to train in the Ansai’s Cultural Center. After years of training, Ms. Yu became a master in her own right, winning one award after another. Her works are on display in museums. But she’s humble about her achievements. “I was, and still am, a farmer,” she says with a smile.
Hoping to carry on and grow the folk art, Ms. Yu volunteers to teach at free community training sessions. Paper cutting is also taught in Ansai’s public schools. Ms. Yu is aware of the need to go beyond protecting traditions and embrace new paper-cut experiments.
4. What does the underlined word “adornment” in paragraph 2 mean?
A Celebration. B. Symbol. C. Invention. D. Decoratıon.
5. What can be learned about paper cutting from the text?
A. It has cultural value. B. It features animals.
C. It attracts the young. D. It remains in fashion.
6. Which word best describes Ms. Yu?
A. Talkative. B. Curious. C. Devoted. D. Competitive.
7. What is the text likely to be?
A. A brief history of paper cutting.
B. A new approach to paper cutting.
C. An introduction to a paper cutting master.
D. The direction of a traditional paper cutting.

A recent study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has discovered that river erosion (侵蚀) can lead to increased biodiversity in areas with minimal tectonic (地壳构造的) activity. The researchers focused their attention on the Tennessee River Basin and examined how the erosion of various rock types by the river had led to the separation and diversification of a type of fish called the greenfin darter. As time passed, these separate fish populations evolved into distinct families with genetic differences.
Scientist Thomas Near observed that the greenfin darter was exclusively found in the southern half of the Tennessee River Basin. The researchers analyzed the genes of each fish in Near’s data set and constructed an evolutionary tree. This tree helped them comprehend the evolution and differences of the greenfin darter species. They discovered that the fish within the same branch of the river were more closely related to each other than to the fish in other branches.
This study provides evidence that river erosion significantly impacts biodiversity in regions with low tectonic activity. It illustrates how changes in the landscape caused by river erosion can lead to the division and diversification of species over time, even in peaceful environments. These findings enhance our understanding of the mechanisms (机制) that drive biodiversity and evolution, even in areas that are not typically associated with intense tectonic activity.
Subsequently, the team discovered a strong correlation between the habitats of the greenfin darter and the type of rocks present. The southern half of the Tennessee River Basin consists of hard, tightly packed rocks, resulting in turbulent (湍急的) waves in the rivers that flow through it. This characteristic may be favored by the greenfin darter. As a result, the team assumed whether the distribution of greenfin darter habitats had been influenced by the changing rock types, as the rivers eroded the land over time. To test this assumption, the researchers developed a simulation model. Remarkably, the results confirmed their assumption.
8. What is new about the MIT study?
A. It finds river erosion can enhance biodiversity.
B. It further proves the mechanisms of river erosion.
C. It proves the geographical features of biodiversity.
D. It classifies a type of fish called the greenfin darter.
9. What can we learn about the greenfin darter?
A. Their appearances vary between families. B. Their genetic constitutions have diversified.
C. They prefer the deep and slow-flowing river. D. They go extinct in the changing landscape of rivers.
10. How did Near help the researchers reach their conclusion?
A. By creating an evolutionary tree of the fish.
B. By offering the fish’s genetic data.
C. By reasoning out the time the fish evolve and separate.
D. By analyzing the genetic similarity between different fish.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. River Erosion Can Shape Fish Evolution B. Genetic Change in the Greenfin Darter
C. Evolutionary Tree Analysis of the Greenfin Darter D. The Impact of Climate Change on Fish Diversity
D
When patients are discharged (出院) from the hospital, effective summaries from doctors’ notes are essential to capture their health status in the medical record. Whereas, most are filled with technical languages that are hard to understand and increase patients’ anxiety.
To address the problem, researchers from New York University (NYU) Langone Health have been testing the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI). It tries to develop likely options for the next word in any sentence based on how most people use words in context on the Internet.
NYU Langone Health received access to the latest tool from a famous tech company to explore generative AI. One of the studies by the researchers published in JAMA Network Open, looked at how well the tool could convert (转换) the text in 50 patient discharge notes into patient-friendly language. Specifically, generative AI made the discharge notes drop from 11th-grade reading level on average to a 6th-grade level.
Two physicians were asked to review the AI discharge summary based on a 6th-grade level. The reviewing physicians awarded 54 percent of the AI-generated discharge notes the best-possible accuracy rating. They also found that 56 percent of notes created by AI were entirely complete. The result signified that even at the current performance level, providers of discharge notes would not have to make a single change in more than half of the AI summaries reviewed.
“That more than half of the AI reports generated are accurate and complete is an amazing start,” said Jonah Zaretsky, associate chief of medicine at NYU Langone Hospital — Brooklyn. “Even at the current level of performance, which we expect to improve shortly, the achievement of the AI tool suggests that it can be taught to recognize subtleties (微妙之处).”
Within the following years, the team expects to launch a pilot program to provide lay language discharge summaries that have been generated by AI and reviewed by physicians to patients on a larger scale.
12. What is generative AI used for by the researchers?
A. Submitting discharge summaries. B. Accessing patients’ health status.
C. Making discharge notes clear to patients. D. Offering technical languages to doctors.
13. What is generative AI’s function based on?
A. Probable predicting. B. Actual thinking.
C. Free imagining. D. Strict instructing.
14. Why were the two physicians asked to review the AI discharge summaries?
A. To correct their mistakes. B. To measure their accuracy.
C. To compete with the AI tool. D. To make up the missing parts.
15. How did Jonah Zaretsky find the performance of AI in dealing with discharge summaries?
A. Misleading. B. Dismissive. C. Challenging. D. Promising.

To my mother, the four basic food groups are meat, milk, grain and coleslaw (凉拌菜丝)—pieces of raw cabbage, carrot, onion, etc. mixed with sauce. And she always thinks highly of her handmade coleslaw. In our house, the coleslaw always goes on the table in a bowl.
I love Mom's coleslaw, but there was a time I distinctly remember when it caused absolute panic within me.
Early in the first grade, I raced home from school with a collection of papers handed to me by my class teacher Mary. As I rushed through the front door, I immediately ran to the kitchen where Mom was making chicken noodle soup. Holding the papers, I begged, “Read them to me, Mom, please!”
Slowly she started reading aloud. I smiled with delight as she read to me what seemed an almost endless list of exciting adventures waiting for me in the coming year. And then, it happened.
“It's a tradition for a mother to bring a homemade treat for the class to share on her child's birthday,” she read. “It needn't be anything fancy, just something you enjoy making.” The words floated through the air in painfully slow motion. The phrase “just something you enjoy making” kept appearing inside my head.
Until my birthday in April, I lived in fear that Mom would arrive at school with a cart full of her coleslaw for everyone to share. I imagined the classmates laughing at me, “Who would bring coleslaw on his birthday? Oh, stupid Tom!”
When I left for school on the morning of my birthday, Mom was making cakes. I had relief and was glad she would bring the cakes. But then, I found there were a great many raw vegetables in the fridge. “Will you also make coleslaw for me, Mom?” I asked, shocked.

Mom just laughed. All morning, I was anxious. At 12: 00, Mom showed up with cupcakes and also coleslaw. I felt embarrassed, annoyed and worried about my classmates' reaction. Mom walked to Mary and gave her a cupcake and some coleslaw placed on a paper plate. Curiously, she tasted the coleslaw.
“Wow, how delicious!” Mary said , and then all the others expected the coleslaw. I was surprised. When more and more classmates gave positive response, my initial fear turned into relief and joy. “Your mom is so talented! Will you bring some next time?” many classmates asked. After school, I rushed home, hugging Mom and apologizing for shouting at her in the morning. Meanwhile, I thanked her for giving me such a wonderful birthday. My mother made the best coleslaw, and she made the best memories, too.
