My family has a history of diabetes (糖尿病), and I was, too, at risk of suffering from these diseases. When my doctor told me I had to do something about my weight because I was in danger of falling ill, I knew I had to take action.
I did not want to become like my relatives who had to constantly worry about their health and suffer the consequences of ill health. In fact, I wanted to be healthy and I wanted to stay healthy. Consequently, I began this journey of losing weight and becoming fit.
It took me years to get my weight back within healthy limits, and I faced many challenges along the way. Right now, I am not saying that the journey is over since it is not. But what I can say is that, along the way, I managed to create some really good, healthy habits for myself that allow me to keep myself in good shape.
I cannot describe to you the great feeling of finally being in control of my own body. For years, I thought it was impossible to lose weight and that I was doomed (注定的) to share my family’s medical problems. When the doctor told me I should lose weight, I was not very positive about getting results. However, once they started to appear, my attitude changed.
What I noticed, while I was on this road of losing weight, was that the little changes I could make counted the most. It was not a crazy strict diet or exercising for hours that helped me lose weight and keep it that way. The little habits, the small things - they were the ones that offered me the best way to lose the extra pounds I was carrying around. These are the tips that I followed: always warm up before exercising, drink enough water and always eat breakfast. That is how I managed to lose the weight I wanted. I followed the three simple tips above, which also.-gave me some good habits!

A. She took it seriously. B. She turned a deaf ear to it.
C. She was a bit doubtful about it. D. She became worried about her disease.

A. Costly and traditional. B. Easy and rclaxing.

A. She began to believe in her doctor.
B. She realized she should really lose weight.
C. She thought she would have medical problems.
D. She became hopeful about getting down to a healthy weight.
7. What did the author do to achieve her goal?
A. She started small. B. She pushed her body to the limit.
C. She adopted a very strict diet. D. She exercised hard for hours daily.

Smoking in your own home in Thailand may now be considered a crime, if the smoke is considered harmful to other people in the house.
The new law, Family Protection and Development Promotion Act, was initiated (启动) by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 22, 2019. The law aims at limiting smoking at home which might be hazardous for others’ health living under the same roof. In that case, it will be considered as “domestic violence”. The new law came into force on August 20.
According to the center for research and knowledge management for tobacco control, at the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, there are about 4.9 million households where one or more family members smoke. An average of 10.3 million people have unconsciously become passive smokers because they’ve been breathing in smoke at home. Scientific studies show that passive smokers are at greater risk of being affected by cancer.
Of 75 child patients from houses where smoking is practiced, 76% of them were found to have nicotine traces in their urine (尿液), with 43% of them having nicotine content going beyond permitted levels. Smoking at home also may lead to physical or emotional violence because of aggressiveness (攻击性) when there is a lack of smoking, and might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.
According to the new law, anyone who thinks they are affected by domestic smoking can report to officials concerned so that inspectors will be sent to investigate and take legal action against the smokers. Once confirmed, the court may order a person to receive treatment to quit smoking in an attempt to protect the person’s family. In February in 2019, Thailand had banned smoking at six of its airports along with a ban in public places.
8. What do we know about the new law in Thailand?
A. It came into effect on May 22.
B. It aimed at protecting the health of non-smokers.
C. It regarded smoking at home as a kind of domestic violence.
D. It clearly claimed that smoking at home is a crime.
9. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Anxious. B. Harmful.
C. Beneficial. D. Essential.
10. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The purpose of initiating the law.
B. Responses to the new law.
C. Actions to quit smoking.
D. Bad consequences of smoking at home.
11. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Smoking is illegal anywhere in Thailand.
B. Passive smokers are not likely to suffer from cancer.
C. People tend to be more aggressive when they are smoking.
D. Thailand is making efforts to create a smoke-free environment.

Recent research has found that Martian (火星的) soil contains all the essential nutrients necessary for growing rice, planetary scientist Abhilash Ramachandran of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, reported at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, providing new possibilities for agriculture on the Red Planet.
The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, tested simulated (模拟的) Martian soil to determine its suitability for growing rice. The researchers found that the soil contained all the essential nutrients needed for the crop to grow.
However, it would be a bit challenging for the plants to survive in the soil that has perchlorate, a chemical that has been detected on Mars’ surface and can be poisonous to plants.
The team grew rice plants in a Martian soil simulant primarily made of Mojave Desert basalt (玄武岩). However the new-grown plants developed slighter shoots and thinner roots than the plants that grew from the potting mix. Even replacing just 25 percent of the simulant with a potting mix made a big difference, the team found.
The team of researchers then conducted an experiment to grow rice in soil containing perchlorate. They used a wild rice variety and two genetically edited varieties which were designed to stand up to environmental stressors such as drought, and tested them in Mars-simulated soil with and without perchlorate.
The study revealed that a concentration of three grams of perchlorate per kilogram of soil resulted in no growth of rice plants. However, when the concentration was reduced to one gram per kilogram, one of the genetically edited lines successfully grew both a shoot and a root, while the wild variety was only able to grow a root.
“We want to send humans to Mars but we cannot take everything there. It’s going to be expensive,” said Ramachandran. The discovery could be a game-changer for future missions to Mars, as it could enable astronauts to grow their own food on the planet, reducing the need for costly and complex resupply missions.
12. How did the researchers conduct their study?
A. By asking questions. B. By carrying out experiments.
C. By making a case study. D. By referring to former studies.
13. The gene-edited variety grows better in one kilogram of soil containing ______.
A. one gram of perchlorate B. two grams of perchlorate
C. three grams of perchlorate D. four grams of perchlorate
14. Why did the researchers want to grow rice on Mars?
A. To find a wonderful way to make money.
B. To support the growing population on Earth.
C. To help astronauts feed themselves on Mars.
D. To enable people to eat new varieties of rice.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. What Should We Grow on Mars?
B. How Did Martian Soil Change Over Time?
C. People Are Likely to Live on Mars Years Later
D. Martian Soil May Have All the Essential Nutrients Rice Needs

The day Dana and Jeff’s daughter Melody was born was nothing like they expected. The words the doctor said to them completely shook them, “Your daughter was born with a cleft lip (唇裂).” It was impossible for the couple to hide their sadness. They couldn’t believe it was true until they saw their daughter in person. Seeing her cleft made Dana and Jeff heartbroken more than anything. It broke their heart to imagine the kind of life Melody would lead in the future.
When the doctor told Dana and Jeff that their daughter’s condition was treatable with a cleft lip surgery (外科手术), the couple saw a ray of hope. Rather than feeling stressful like the first few days, they promised themselves they never wanted their daughter to suffer from that. They would support Melody as best they could.
Dana and Jeff were ready to do anything for Melody. After bringing Melody home, they immediately began looking for cleft surgery options. However, no matter where they turned, getting Melody the surgery she needed was expensive, and the various treatments and medications she needed in the following would also be much more costly than the young family could afford.
One day, however, things took a turn for the better. While browsing through a medical forum one evening, Jeff stumbled upon (意外发现) a post about a nonprofit organization that specialized in cleft lip surgeries for children. The organization, named Smileatfuture, is dedicated to providing free surgeries to families who could not afford the procedure. The couple had seen a lot of photos and read a lot of stories about children who had cleft surgeries sponsored by Smileatfuture, and the results were unbelievable. The idea that Melody could grow up with hardly a scar (伤疤) where her cleft was lit a fire under the couple. Without any hesitation, Dana and her husband reached out to Smileatfuture and handed in an application for medical aid.

D. It clearly claimed that smoking at home is a crime.
9. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

C. Beneficial. D. Essential.
10. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The purpose of initiating the law.
B. Responses to the new law.
C. Actions to quit smoking.

11. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Smoking is illegal anywhere in Thailand.

However, the new-grown plants developed slighter shoots and thinner roots than the plants that grew from the potting mix. Even replacing just 25 percent of the simulant with a potting mix made a big difference, the team found.
The team of researchers then conducted an experiment to grow rice in soil containing perchlorate. They used a wild rice variety and two genetically edited varieties, which were designed to stand up to environmental stressors such as drought, and tested them in Mars-simulated soil with and without perchlorate.

The words the doctor said to them completely shook them “Your daughter was born with a cleft lip (唇裂).” It was impossible for the couple to hide their sadness.
