Imagine sitting at your breakfast table having a cup of coffee when all of a sudden you see someone about to die. What would you do? Last Christmas, John Gelinne found out.
On Dec.26, Gelinne, 60, was watching out the back windows of his home in Edgewater, Maryland, at frozen Beards Creek(河流).Children and grandchildren were running around the house. That's when Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small plane a few hundred yards away, losing altitude.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former Navy commander, realized it was going to land in the creek. He flashed on a moment from more than 20 years earlier: Sept.11, 2001.Gelinne was at work in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., when terrorists crashed a plane into the building. He escaped but has always wondered if he could have stayed inside and...
“To the right was the crisis, and to the left was escape.I don't even know if I could have gone right, but I went left,” he recalled.“I always second-guessed myself about that decision.”
On this day, Gelinne didn't hesitate. He ran down to the waterfront. The plane had slipped to a stop on the broad, frozen creek, far from the shore. It was now sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing.Gelinne knew from his Navy training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it.So he and his son, John Jr., 37, pulled two kayaks (皮艇) out.
“I figured, if it can float on the water, it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne says. The kayaks' paddles (桨) proved easily broken, so the pair tried using shovels (铁铲) to push the boats along.Their first attempts left them moving in circles. But with some muscle, they made progress.

[范文]
The two men set off, pushing their boats across the ice. When they reached the plane, the pilot was standing on the sinking wing, and the icy water was up to his chest. John Jr. tried to pull him onto his kayak, while Gelinne helped prevent their kayaks from turning over. It was hard work, but Gelinne knew that they had to hurry before the pilot got frozen. With great strength, they tried again and again, until they made it. They struggled their way back.
They finally arrived at the shore with great efforts. The pilot was still alive, but they were all tired. Gelinne's family and people in the neighbourhood had come to the shore with blankets, applying first aid and the ambulance was waiting nearby. The pilot expressed his gratitude to Gelinne and his son for saving his life. “I'm 60 years old. It nearly killed me to get him to the shore. ” Gelinne recalled. Still, he was satisfied that he'd gone the right way that day.
Passage 2

It was Christmas Eve.And my sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work.Mom usually came home about an hour after we got home from school.
So we thought there was plenty of time for us to have a secret look at the gifts under the tree.
Since my sister was older, she was in charge. She opened the first gift while I was ordered to stand guard at the big window of our front room.I was to report the possible coming of our mother.I was so excited that I couldn't always keep my eyes on the window. My head moved from the window to my sister and back to the window again. It seemed that I was watching a ping-pong match.
“All right!” my sister shouted. She pulled out a jewelry box and said, “You know what that means, don't you?” I shouted, jumping up and down, “Yeah, it's my turn!” “No,” she said.“It means that there must be some jewelry here.” I watched my sister checking the presents under the tree. She was trying to find one small enough to be a necklace.“Hey, that's not fair! It's my turn!” I said, feeling upset. However, she just replied, “Are you watching for Mom?”
I couldn't do anything except standing guard as she opened present after present. Finally, my sister's curiosity was satisfied. And when she had finished wrapping her last present backup, we traded places. My heart pounded so hard and I could feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. My sister reminded me to be careful, so I wouldn't tear the wrapper. And she reminded me to wrap the present back up the same way that I had found it.After unwrapping few presents, I found it much faster to open one end of a present and look inside.
“It's cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones!” I said and smiled. And I pulled the headphones out of the box, wanting to put them on.

[范文]
Just then, my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap it back up!” Mom's coming home!” My heart hit the floor along with the headphones when I heard what sounded like glass crushing. I recognized sound of my mother's car approaching our stone driveway. I stood frozen, like a statue in the snow. “Come on!” urged my sister. I pushed the headphones back into the box, but my hands were shaking so much that I tore the wrapper. My heart pounded harder as I attempted to mend the broken pieces with some glue. Fortunately, I had just finished rewrapping it when I heard the door open, signaling my mother's arrival.
My mother came into the front room, and I jumped up and said, “Hi. Mom!” She smiled at me and didn't appear to suspect anything. My heart began to slow as I took a deep breath in relief. That was too close. On Christmas morning, my sister and I unwrapped our presents again. After everything was revealed, it appeared that our secret remained safe. But somehow, that particular Christmas morning felt different, and we were burdened with regret for our deeds. So in the following years, we never opened our presents early again, as we wanted to cherish and genuinely share the “surprise” moment with our parents.
Passage 3
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Okay.I'll admit it.I can be a complainer. After all, there's so much in this life to complain about: the dirty clothes that don't make it into the basket, that annoying neighbor's loud music, my husband's shoes left casually at the front door, rainy days, traffic...
Complaining is a habit I have developed since childhood, and a skill I have honed (磨练) through the years. My family didn't seem to mind—they were great complainers, too, though I do recall some eye-rolling and long-drawn sighs from friends and schoolmates when I would voice my negative opinions. In fact, I can distinctly recall the exact moment when I first realized my complaining habit reached its expert level.
One day, as I reminded my husband once again to remove his bills from the dining-room table, put his shoes away, and lower that doggone radio, he put up his hand.“Stop! Stop your complaining. It's driving me crazy.”
I looked at him blank-eyed.
He took a deep breath.“You never hear me complaining, do you?”
“Well,” I answered, “you're complaining about my complaining, so actually, yes, I am hearing you complain right now.”
His eyes widened.Sweat formed on his upper lip. Then he grabbed his car keys and ran out the door.
Perhaps I'd gone too far, I thought.Maybe I really did complain too much. But, what to do about it? After all, it had been a lifetime habit. And habits are hard to break.

I took a break and sat down to think about solutions. ________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The benefits of this solution were immediate and obvious. ____________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
[范文]
I took a break and sat down to think about solutions. When I felt annoyed, I could lock myself in the bathroom and scream. No. The neighbors would probably hear me. Phone a friend? She probably wouldn't be a friend for very long. Then it hit me. I'd been in the habit of keeping a journal for most of my life. Journaling kept me sort of honest with myself, and I liked it for that reason. Perhaps, I thought, a complaint journal might be the answer I was seeking. Each time I found myself feeling the urge to voice anger, I wrote it in my complaint journal. It felt so good and free to say exactly what was on my mind without anyone judging me or my thoughts.
The benefits of this solution were immediate and obvious. Without fear of quarrel, my generally silent and cautious husband opened up to me more. Old friendships became deeper, and new friendships appeared. Neighbors became more neighborly. Overall, I started to just feel better—happier and less stressed. When I look back on some of my initial journals, I have to laugh out loud. Some of my complaints appear truly ridiculous. I still keep that journal, though. Those few moments each day when I can sit down, take a break from the pressures of the day and free myself of whatever is bothering me made a big difference for the better in my life. And,if you ask my husband, probably in his life, too.
Passage 4

Although it's been almost two years now, I can still remember that day as if it were yesterday. We were all glued in front of the television, when Dad came rushing into the house after work to tell us that he had just bought a new boat.He promised us that the following week he'd take us all on a fishing trip.We were all very excited and happy at the prospect of it.
The much-awaited day finally came. After we packed everything onto the boat, Dad started the engine and steered it slowly out of the harbour. We headed out until we were a good distance from the shore. Then, when we found what seemed like a good spot for fishing, Dad stopped the engine.
The sky was crystal clear and the sea was as calm as a sheet of glass. We spent a good couple of hours bathing in the sun, fishing rods in hands, without a care in the world. It was fantastic just being there, staring out at the beautiful blue sea.We caught a good number of fish.
We must have lost track of time, chatting and laughing, because the next thing remembered was being put into a darkness which was so thick that one could almost cut it with a knife.Looking around, it was all pitch-black.Then, out of nowhere, a big wave came crushing into the boat, nearly overturning us all overboard. If that wasn't bad enough, we could hear the rumbling (隆隆声) of thunder in the distance—it was unbelievable how the weather had changed so quickly before our very own eyes. The storm was rolling up on us fast, and it wasn't long before the rain started to come down in showers. The rain was so dense and heavy that we could barely breathe.

Dad immediately rushed to start the engine, but it would not start. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, we started to hear what seemed like the sound of a helicopter approaching.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
[范文]
Dad immediately rushed to start the engine, but it would not start. He tried and tried, but it was all in vain—the engine was dead. For that split second, it took us to realize what was going on. We all just stared at each other without saying a word. To make matters worse, without the engine, we were at the mercy of the sea. The waves were getting higher and the boat was taking in water fast. Then, we gave up all hope and thought.
Suddenly, we started to hear what seemed like the sound of a helicopter approaching. We all realized what it meant—we were going to be safe after all! That thought gave us courage, and we started to yell at the top of our voices and to wave, torches in hands, with all our might. Luckily, it didn't take long for the rescue team to spot us. They controlled the helicopter a few feet above our heads and lowered down the rope ladder, from which we could all climb to safety.

Walking on the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Washington, D.C.was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I ducked into the subway station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching.I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court was tempting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor's eyes, it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell.I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for a handout. But he never did.My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached.“Excuse me, sir,” began the husband.“We just finished eating and our appetite wasn't as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use? The kind stranger handed a large container with food.“Thank you.” came the grateful reply.Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor's response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl.It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal.He opened his mouth, and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear.Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, hatless and gloveless. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged.People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.

My neighbor was the only one taking action. ______________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food from the food court. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
[范文]
My neighbor was the only one taking action. Quickly pulling aside his miracle meal, my neighbor leaped up and guided the elderly man to share the seat. Numb with cold, the old man didn't expect the invitation, moving clumsily. Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbor tenderly put his down jacket over the older man's shoulders, slipping his arms into sleeves. Finally, he said “Can you help me out?” pointing to the meal and placing the steaming cup of soup in the stranger's hands. Seeing this, my head and heart stopped battling and I had my decision.
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food from the food court. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind. With regret, I felt obliged to do the same. Respectfully and cautiously, I approached them with steaming soup and sandwich. People around cast an approving smile in my direction. “Can you help me out?” I asked. “Why not?” he added jokingly, “But only if you go halfway with me on that sandwich, which is too much for a man my age. ” It wasn't until that day that I truly learned the meaning of sharing. I left the subway station feeling warmer than I had ever thought possible.
Passage 6

Where was that cashier? Feeling annoyed, I glanced at my watch.I hardly had enough time to eat my tacos (玉米饼)—if I ever got them—and then dashed back to the hospital where I worked.
But I could still make it back to work in time if people would cooperate.I looked around the nearly empty fast-food restaurant, but the cashier was nowhere in sight.A woman whom I guessed to be about my age stood wiping the far end of the counter with a towel. When she thought I wasn't looking, she looked at me with sad, dark eyes.
I waited, drumming my fingers on the counter.I glanced again at my watch, and decided to write a letter about the lack of service in this place. But as I thought about my letter, I thought of Rosie, a former coworker of mine.Standing there, I heard her sweet voice warn me: “Be what's missing.”
“What do you mean, ‘Be what's missing'?” I'd asked the first time I heard her use that phrase.
“Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation,” she explained, “just think about what is missing.” Rosie smiled.“It's really simple when you think about it.If someone is mean, then kindness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what's missing, then we'll provide whatever the situation needs.
Here I was in an unpleasant situation. How should I “be what's missing”? What was missing was service. When the woman who'd wiped the counter laid down her towel, she walked slowly toward the cash register. With her offensive eyes and deliberately paced words, she asked, “May I help you?” Before I could respond sarcastically (讽刺地), I again heard Rosie's voice: “Be what's missing.”
I took a deep breath.Looking at the woman more closely, I was struck by our differences.I was well-dressed, and it was clear that I was in a hurry to be waited on—by someone who was, no doubt, overworked, underpaid, and now looked tired.

[范文]
With Rosie's words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order and smiled. “How are you today?” I said. My greeting seemed to surprise her. She looked at me in doubt for a second before answering. “Not too good. It's been a bad day. ” “I'm sorry to hear that,” I said. “I hope it gets better—starting right now. ” Hearing what I said, she looked at me, almost smiling. “Thanks. I hope you're right. ” I just hoped what I said could make her feel better.
“We're all the same, really,” I thought as I ate my tacos. “We have problems and worries. We feel mistreated, get tired and hurt. And we need to be nicer to each other,” I concluded. When I finished eating, I placed everything on my plate and wiped the table more thoroughly than usual. Walking toward the door, I stopped and glanced back toward the counter. The cashier was watching me. But, this time, a broad smile replaced her offensive eyes. She waved an enthusiastic goodbye as I pushed the door. What Rosie said “Be what's missing. ” worked.

Experiences at a Sports Meeting
I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school.I won the B Division long jump and was a decent sprinter (短跑运动员).As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meeting.A little too proud, I was so sure I would win a medal that I didn't make enough preparations.
The Meeting lasted two days.I had no events scheduled for the first day.So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 meters relay later in the afternoon.I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. My jump was 3.65 meters which was not bad for me.Then there was a boy nicknamed the typhoon, who jumped over 4 meters! That was quite an accomplishment for a ten-year-old boy.We finished our jumps, and I came in the fourth place, just missing out on a medal, which I was eagerly longing for.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50 meters relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg.The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a nervous minute or so, I heard the starter's gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched holding my breath as my team runners kept up with the others.I saw the baton (接力棒) passed from one runner to another. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in the second place. My turn arrived.I took the baton cleanly and began my run.The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner.

[范文]
Then disaster struck!I was trying my best to catch up when I felt my legs were weak. Hard as I tried, my legs failed me after a few more steps. I tumbled and fell. Young and flexible, I was able to quickly pick myself up and continue the race. However, the tumble cost us valuable time. I handed the baton to the next runner. Although the runners dashed with all their might, it was too late. We'd blown our chance at a medal.
I sat there, wounds on my knees, lowering my head. Feeling terrible for letting the team down, I thought it was the end of the world and couldn't help sobbing. It was more being too proud than bad luck. At the end of the day, I left the Meeting empty-handed. It had been an eventful and unsatisfying day for me. Anyway, I realized the importance of making full preparations and learned we should spare no effort on everything. I am grateful for the lesson.

Lily was cleaning windows, and it was what she must do for her family's new Chinese restaurant.Everything had to be absolutely perfect: unique decorations, skillful employees, and delicious traditional food. Then customers would love the place, making the business a success.
Lily's family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was opened yesterday. She was new in the neighborhood and had few friends. The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her.She was eager for a friendship, though.
Lily shifted her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age, with abundant red hair, walked up the street. The girl paused to study the sign announcing their opening and then looked directly at Lily with a friendly smile.Lily smiled back shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl smiled at her amusement and waved back happily.
Lily hesitated, not accustomed to starting friendship, but she felt courageous, so she opened the door.“Hello,” she said, adding the first thing that entered her head, “do you like Chinese food?”
“I don't know, but I like to try new things,” the girl remarked, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela.

Lily could not think of additional conversation until she had a sudden idea. She ran into the kitchen and came back with a small package. “Some Chinese candy for you to try,” she explained. “If you enjoy it, I hope you'll return and tell me. ” “Excellent, I'll see you around soon. ” Gabriela headed down the street, glancing back with a cheerful wave. Lily spent the remaining afternoon hoping Gabriela really would return and not think Lily's gift was strange.
The following day, Lily was doing her restaurant routine when she heard an unexpected knock. It was Gabriela with a plate covered with plastic wrap. Lily grinned with enthusiasm and opened the door with an excited greeting. Gabriela presented the plate and said, “I brought biscuits made from my grandmother's recipe to thank you for the delicious candy. ” “Come in, and we can have some biscuits right now,” Lily stammered, happy inside. Lily was now positive that the restaurant would make a wondrous impression on the customers and that she was going to enjoy her life here immensely.

Nature, while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly, we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mr.Evans' cabin light.
One bright summer day, my friend Peter and I decided to venture into the unexplored trails of the Great Smoky Mountains.Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect getaway.Little did we know that our casual hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever stuck in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding trails. The sun was up, casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked (艰难跋涉), laughed, and marveled (惊叹) at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the dense forests, taking in the natural wonders around us, we couldn't help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our veins. The trail was rugged and uneven, but we persevered through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our expedition, we came cross a breathtaking waterfall, its sparkling waters cascading(倾泻) down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water's edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall enveloped us, and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day wore on, we ventured deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that we just didn't notice our way, and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest.
Panicking, we scrambled to find our way back, but the dense vegetation and winding trails only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back.No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear trails than something worse happened.

Just when we were about to give up, a faint light twinkled in the distance. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
[范文]
Suddenly, the weather took an abrupt turn. Dark clouds covered the sky, a heavy downpour following. The comforting forest sounds quickly turned into a terrifying symphony of thunder and wind. The trail that was once so clear tuned out to be a muddy mess, making it impossible to continue. We tried to consult our map, but it was too late. Obviously, we were lost in the wildness. Hours passed, and our attempts to find the trail turned to be in vain. With the cold creeping in, despair started to set in.
Just when we were about to give up, a faint light twinkled in the distance. Curiosity overpowered our fear, and we decided to follow it.As we drew closer, we saw a small log cabin, lights shining from its windows. Knocking on the door, an elderly man, Mr. Evans, welcomed us with a warm smile. He was a retired worker who had chosen to live his later years in the heart of the mountains. He offered us shelter for the night, and the next morning, guided us back to the main trail. This incident strengthened our friendship and taught us the value of resilience and hope. The experience was unexpected, terrifying, but enlightening all the same.

Sarah, a high school student, was always eager to participate in every activity happening in school life, and she often persuaded her best friend, Anthony, to join her.
One day, Sarah saw a poster announcing the annual Great Bake-off Challenge.Excitedly, she explained to Anthony how the winner would be granted a baking masterclass with the well-known baker, Chef Bella. Both Sarah and Anthony loved baking and idolized (崇拜) Chef Bella, whose cooking show was popular across the country.
However, they realized the competition would be tough as their school had its share of talented bakers.Despite this, Sarah suggested that they combine their strengths to participate as a team.Anthony agreed, and they started the journey to win the Great Bake-off Challenge.
Sarah and Anthony started by shortlisting their strengths: Sarah was skilled at constructing and decorating cakes, while Anthony was good at developing delicious flavors. They spent weekends brainstorming, testing, and perfecting their baking recipes, transforming Sarah's family kitchen into their very own bake-off battleground.
As the date of the competition got closer, they grew more anxious. They even had a few arguments about the cake's design or the flavor combination, but they quickly resolved their disagreements and continued to work together as a team.
The day of the Great Bake-off Challenge finally arrived.Sarah and Anthony walked into the school hall, their hearts pounding with a mix of anticipation and fear. The setup had multiple workstations, each equipped with an oven, a mixer, and basic baking tools. The participants were given three hours to complete their cakes, after which the judges would evaluate each creation based on taste and originality.
The countdown began, and the couple sprung into action.Anthony worked on the complex flavor combinations, while Sarah started building the cake's impressive structure.During the intensity, they couldn't help but steal a glance at the other competitors, admiring their opponents' skills and creativity. However, they remained focused on their creation, supporting and encouraging each other throughout the process.

Three hours unconsciously passed, and the deadline was up. They took a step back and started admiring their accomplishment. It's an extraordinary five-layer cake with an incredible mix of flavors and impressive decorations, displaying their beautiful journey together as friends. Drawing inspiration from their idol, Chef Bella, they sought to create not just a cake, but a great work of art. With dusted faces and flour-covered aprons, they looked at each other nervously, wondering whether they had done enough to win over the judges.
The judges began their round of tasting and assessments. When the judges approached to sample their cake, they held their breath. Every bite the judges took, every whisper they shared intensified their anxiety. After what seemed like a century, the result was announced: “The winners are Sarah and Anthony!” Their hearts expanded with happiness as they hugged each other tight, holding back tears of joy. Their hard work finally paid off, and they would soon stand in the same kitchen with their beloved Chef Bella.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying.Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods.I could only see his back.He wasn't walking in his usual way.He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible.Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow and purposeful step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me.I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he carried.Branches and thorns slapped his little face, but he did not try to avoid them.He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned against a tree to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him.But Billy walked right up to them.I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water in my boy's hands.

[范文]
After delivering the water to the dehydrated(脱水的) animals, Billy carefully jumped up to run back. He knew that the water was precious and he wanted to make sure that the animals had enough to drink. His little legs carried him as fast as he could go. His heart filled with joy as being able to help these poor creatures. His small steps were determined and quick. I stood there, watching him, with a mixture of pride and worry.
Later that day, I learned what had been happening. Seeing the deer suffering, Billy decided to help them, even at the risk of his own safety. He had been secretly taking water from our small well to the woods, where a group of deer had been struggling in the heat and drought. To bring them water and save as many as he could, he repeated trips back and forth. Billy was only six, but he had already shown more strength and resilience. I felt a sense of pride and admiration for my little hero.
Passage 12

I was nineteen years old the first time I saw my own true character. At least I can say that my true character changed that day.
For about a year, my voyage to and from work each day included a ten-minute walk through the heart of downtown Toronto. As with most large cities, the homeless population of Toronto often gathered on down-town corners, asking pedestrians (行人) for their spare change.Like most busy citizens, I learned to ignore the nameless faces who begged me for money each day.In my eyes, they are on the streets because they choose to be.
I remember how particularly cold the weather had been that day.I passed the usual crowd of homeless beggars, ignored all of them, and continued walking. As I crossed an intersection (交叉路口), I saw him sitting against a building, holding a white cup in front of him.I heard his shaky voice target me as I sped past him.
“Spare some change?” he asked.
I didn't even bother looking up at his nameless face.“I have no money on me,” I said quickly.
Looking back now, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson.Just a few feet past him, I slipped on the icy road.I lay on the ground for several moments wondering if I had broken my leg. Then I heard a familiar voice only inches above me.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately that this was the man I had just rushed past.I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his eyes.
I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet.He held my arm as I hobbled (跛行) to the nearby bus stop. The pain in my leg told me that I needed an X-ray.
“My name is Mike,” he said.“You really shouldn't try walking on that leg.You really need to get it checked by a doctor,” he said with deep concern.
“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.

[范文]
Mike paused and a sudden look of realization crossed his face. He quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out his small white cup. After counting the mere change carefully in it, he held all out toward me, his eyes brimming with care and sincerity. At that moment, an embarrassed silence struck for a moment. I looked up at him in shock. “I know you have no change,” he said with a smiling face, “but I think there's just enough here for you to take the bus. ” I was overwhelmed with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him.
I turned away from his offering hand and reached for my purse. I felt Mike's eyes fixed on me. I counted out enough money for me to take the bus to the hospital and then offered him the rest. “Thank you,” he said quietly. It was by far the most heartfelt “thank-you” I had heard in my life. He clung to his cup of change, cherishing it as if it were the first gift he had received. Despite his gratitude, I didn't feel relieved. A half cup of change seemed too small a gift for the man who gave a name to every nameless face I've ever seen.

One day, a man saw an old lady stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help.So he pulled up in front of her car and got out.His car was still sputtering when he approached her.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so.Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold.He knew how she felt.It was those chills which only fear can put in you.He said, “I'm here to help you, ma'am.Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough.Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two.Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.As he was tightening up the lug nuts(螺母), she rolled down the window and began to talk to him.She told him that she was from St.Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.
Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him.Any amount would have been all right with her.She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped.Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need.He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

[范文]
He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small cafe. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred-dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred-dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. Then she noticed something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don't owe me anything. I have been there, too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, do not let this chain of love end with you. ” Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.

Lunch hour.Escaping from my office, I fled down Main Street in pursuit of freedom from the routine of the day.An old bell clanged (叮当作响) against the door of a dusty used bookstore when I pushed it open.
Looking through the horizon of shelves and lots of magazines, my eyes suddenly met his and my heart began to race. They were the blazing (炽热的) orange eyes of an African lion on the cover of a National Geographic magazine.I hadn't seen those eyes in thirty years, but their impact on me hadn't faded. As a kid I used to dream about Africa, living with wild animals.
The opportunity of spending a “gap year” volunteering in Africa or joining the Youth Corps had long since passed.Or had it? Yes, it's true I couldn't go to Africa for several months, but maybe I could volunteer in Africa for a few weeks.
Over the next several weeks, I began to budget and save, determined to make it happen. The big day came.I arrived and met my boss, a young South African ranger (护林员) named Gary.He said, “Let me guess, you're here because you dreamed of Africa.”
“Yes!” I smiled.
“Well, it's time to wake up, Canada. This is a working game reserve; these are wild animals.”
“Okay.”
“You're going to have to get out of your comfort zone, take some risks.Have the courage of a lion.”
The next morning when we began our patrol (巡逻) in an open-air jeep, giant African elephants appeared in the morning mist.I was no longer dreaming in the pages of a National Geographic magazine, I was living them.
Moments later, Gary parked the jeep and handed me a heavy shovel (铲子) and said, “Time to shovel dung (粪).” Elephant dung.Mountains of it.It will be used as fertilizer in the reserve's sustainable vegetable garden.
Within fifteen minutes my back was aching, and my new work gloves were stretched out and so slippery with dung and sweat that they refused to stay on my hands. This wasn't the dream of Africa I had.

[范文]
I began to question myself. You came all the way to Africa to shovel elephant dung? Maybe my dream of Africa was a silly childhood vision. Maybe I was lost and should have spent this money on therapy instead. What would my friends and co-workers say if they could see me now, knee-deep in dung, barely able to lift this heavy shovel? They'd think I was a fool. Humiliation began to creep over me, engulf me even. Throwing the shovel away, I dropped myself onto the ground.
But at that moment, I remembered Gary's words “step out of your comfort zone”. I needed to have the courage of a lion. Lions don't complain. They're the king of the jungle because there's nowhere they won't go. And I'm in Africa. This elephant dung will help feed a village, and I get to contribute to something meaningful, something bigger than my mouthy little ego. Get out of your head and focus on that. I dug in deep. This was my dream, to come to Africa. As I became heavy with appreciation, the shovel lightened up. The joy of being in this place was even greater than I had imagined and dreamed.

For courage, my fingers hold tight to the harness (挽具) on Chó's broad back as we pass my neighbor's fence.Chó is my guide dog, a German shepherd (德国牧羊犬).Walking by Mr.Groll's yard is the best part of our morning walk...and also the worst. It is the best part because the roses talk to us.“Good morning, Chó,” whisper the roses' sweet smell to Chó's nose.Other roses shout to me, “Hello, Mai!” with a smell that bursts as firecrackers. Now comes the worst part—the unfriendly neighbor that shades us: Mr.Groll.I greet him as I do every morning. And like every other morning, he does not answer me.But I know he's there, watching, behind his fence.
Maybe he's afraid of me because I'm blind.Disabilities scare grown-ups sometimes. Then I remember: yesterday I heard him playing checkers with my friend Jimmy, who's in a wheelchair. Why does Mr.Groll ignore me? He likes roses.I like roses. Why can't two people who like roses like each other? It's a mystery(谜)to me.
Papa has told me that some folks do not like people from faraway places.Does this solve the mystery? Maybe Mr.Groll does not like Vietnamese neighbors. No, that can't be it.Every Saturday Mr.Groll and my big brother, Lien, help each other with yard work. They are friends.Well, then, maybe he doesn't like me because I'm a girl. The sidewalk hums beneath my feet.A skateboard speeds by.“Hello, Mai and Chó!” my friend Jana shouts, “Hi, Mr.Groll.” I wait.If Mr.Groll ignores Jana, then the mystery is solved. But his voice calls out, “Hello, Jana!” The sound of it breaks my heart.
Now I know something I didn't know before: some people who can see can be blind.Sometimes, their hearts don't see any better than my eyes do.And I also know that unfriendly Mr.Groll likes Jimmy. And Lien. And Jana. But not me and Chó! Suddenly, an idea brightens my mystery.Maybe I do know why Mr.Groll doesn't talk to me! “Down,” I command.Chó does as I say.

[范文]
I attach her harness to a tree, and I feel my way along the fence. I knock on the door, hoping he'll answer this time. After a few moments, I hear footsteps approaching. “Good morning, Mr. Groll!” I say, trying to sound cheerful. There is no response, but I can sense his presence behind the fence. I take another deep breath and continue, “I know you like roses, and so do I. Maybe we can talk about them some time?” “Sure...Mai,” he responds hesitantly. As we stand there, surrounded by the beautiful roses, I feel the tension between us slowly disappearing. We talk about the flowers and even our favorite checkers game. When I express my curiosity about his ignoring me, there is a moment of silence and then I hear him clear his throat.
“A German shepherd is a very...big dog,” he says in a voice that tells me he thinks I will laugh at him. Sensing his nervousness, I reassure him that Chó is my friend and he will be gentle and nice. I persuade him to go with me and command Chó up. Chó leaps to its feet, snorting happily. He even sniffs and licks Mr. Groll's hands with his tongue. Mr. Groll is taken aback, but then we both share a laugh. From that moment, I realize that sometimes it takes courage to break down barriers and make new friends. And sometimes all it takes is a shared love for something as simple as a rose to bridge the gap between two people.

Lucy was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I don't have money on me,” she replied.
“That's nothing.I'll treat you today,” said the man.“Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Lucy cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing.Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Lucy as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Lucy sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered hands.“Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”
On the way home, Lucy made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Approaching the doorway, Lucy was very nervous and took a deep breath. Standing in front of the door, she was afraid whether her mother would forgive her for her rudeness. But when she thought of her mother's familiar face and the noodle seller's kind advice, she decided to knock on the door bravely. Her mother opened the door, but Lucy was so ashamed that she didn't know what to say.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Lucy couldn't help crying and said, “Sorry, Mum, I know I have made a big mistake. I shouldn't have quarreled with you. I shouldn't have run away from home. Could you forgive me?” Lucy's mother was moved, saying, “Good girl, never mind, I also should make an apology to you for scolding at you angrily. I am very worried about you. ” Tears rolled down from both of their faces and they hugged each other tightly.

“Yeah, a BATTLE!” said William, pulling my arm.“You see that, John?”
I looked up from my desk to see Ms.Chow writing on the board, “Battle of the Books!” She smiled and then said, “Are you ready to go into the battle? Get prepared for it next week!”
“Is it a reading contest?” I was so excited that I forgot to raise my hand first.
“Good question, John!” said Ms.Chow.“It is not a race and you are not going to beat each other. We are not going to see who can read the fastest or the most books, but you are going to form a team of three and then set a reading goal for your team.If your team meet your goal by the end of this month, you will get a prize!”
Even though the prize was something silly, that still sounded pretty good to me.I turned towards William immediately, saying, “Shall we be teammates?”
“Yes, for sure!” he said.William and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal together.
The bell rang before Ms.Chow could explain any more rules.William and I were about to begin our discussion when Lily passed my desk and said “Teammates?” to William and me.Lily was a girl from Spain and she could read super-fast in both English and Spanish! If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.
“Yeah, of course!” William and I nodded.I had my team! The three of us settled down and started a discussion immediately, trying to figure out what we needed to do to get the prize.Just then, I saw my best friend Tom running towards my desk.I could clearly see the expectation shining in his eyes.

He was my best friend and I didn't want to ruin our friendship. William and Lily also fell into silence and had no idea how to deal with it. Suddenly, Lily said happily, “We can turn to Ms. Chow for help. If we really want to be a team, maybe she will grant our request. ”
Hearing what Lily said, we agreed with her suggestion. So we approached Ms. Chow who was getting ready to leave the classroom. After hearing what we said, she finally agreed, but with one condition that we must set a higher reading goal for our team since we had four. We agreed happily. Finally, the problem was solved perfectly and nobody was heart-broken. I was firmly sure that we would complete our reading goal and win the prize.

My Own Label
It seemed to me that I had two different identities when I was in fifth grade.Outside of school, I was a reasonably happy kid who enjoyed spending time with my friends, reading or listening to rock music. When I was in class, however, I turned into a very different Denise, one who was on guard all the time, and one who wanted nothing more than to get through the day without being teased.
To my classmates I was strange, because I wasn't just like them. The most obvious thing they focused on was that I didn't wear the same designer clothes as they did.Designer clothes were beyond my family's reach. My mother was a single parent, and she worked long hours to support our small household. As far as love and attention were concerned, I was rich beyond all imagination.I was supported and cared for.The only thing that my classmates cared for was fashion, though, and there, I was poor.
I never knew if my classmates would torment (戏弄) me in class, but on the bus I could count on it.My trips to and from school were the horrific, painful bookends to stressful days. One girl made a point of running over to my seat every morning to see what I was wearing, and then returned to her friends to laugh about it.I shrank into myself and stared out the window.
I was the smallest girl in my class. One of my classmates' mothers noticed, and offered me a beautiful skirt that her daughter had outgrown.I wore it happily, thrilled to have a cool item of clothing for once. When I outgrew the skirt, my mother bought me a new one of my own, one without a label. When my classmate saw it, she shouted on purpose, “Oh,that's not my skirt, is it? Where did you get this one, Denise? The poorhouse?” My classmates burst into laughter, and I slipped away, my eyes locked on the ground.I stopped wearing the skirt.

[范文]
After fifth grade ended, over the summer, I spent a month at a day camp. There I found that kids liked me for who I was, not for what I wore. Many campers came from wealthy families, and I spotted plenty of designer shoes, and high fashion T-shirts that cost three figures. Unlike my classmates at school, though, my fellow campers didn't mind my no-name clothes. They simply accepted me as a friend. We spent our days swimming in the pool and riding horses. We had a fashion show, and I was even encouraged to participate. And I did.
With the love and support of my new friends, I became more confident. I stopped listening to my classmates' remarks on my clothes. In the spring, the skirt that my classmates had laughed at made a reappearance. I wore it proudly to both the school dance festival and to my sixth-grade graduation ceremony. Because I knew that the one person I had to learn to impress was myself. And now the only label that matters to me is my own—how I “label” myself.

At the age of 17, I formed a band with three classmates. After we won the first prize at our school's talent show, we decided to see if we could get some local performances. When we found out we'd gotten booked for a charitable event at a large hospital, we were excited. For two weeks, we practiced hard, getting together every day after school to sharpen our skills and learn enough songs to fill a one-hour show.
On the day of the concert, we showed up early to check out the stage. We set up and did a quick sound check, then went backstage to have a soda and rest. While we were back there, the hospital's entertainment director came over to talk to us.
“Okay, boys, I just want to fill you in on a couple of important details,” she told us.“A lot of the people in the audience are suffering from severe physical or mental disabilities. Also, many of them are very old.Don't let that alarm you. They have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical talent.Just play your regular show, and you'll do fine.” With that, she left, going to help the volunteers and staff that were assisting the patients to their seats.
Soon enough, it was show time.Everything was perfect, and we played probably the best show of our lives. We hardly missed a note on any of our songs.Unfortunately, we couldn't enjoy our performance. As each song finished, there was a short pause. This was the time when the audience would normally applaud. Now, we were getting nothing.Zero.The deafening silence only made us more determined to win the audience over.We tried harder.Loud songs, soft songs, it made no difference. After forty-five minutes, we decided to end our set early. Why bother finishing when no one was appreciating us anyway? We unplugged (拔去) our instruments and went backstage.

A moment later, the entertainment director ran back to us. She asked us why we didn't finish the show as promised. We told her how embarrassed we felt when we played in front of complete silence. We also expressed our concern that they must dislike us. “What are you talking about?” asked the director, “I've been talking to them. They love you so much. ” It turned out that they just didn't know they were supposed to clap. Or they simply couldn't do so due to severe physical or mental disabilities. All of us stared at her in disbelief, and we decided to keep our word and finish the show.
Returning to the stage, we played our final three songs. Finally, with the show over, we began packing up our instruments. We had still received no applause. However, as we were to leave, at least fifty people crowded onto the stage. All of them wanted to thank us; some shook our hands, and some surrounded us with a wide grin. Several told us that we were the best band that had played for them in years. We couldn't believe it. We never felt as good as we did that one special night.

It was Tamika's turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced.“They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting, and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there.”
“That's not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner.“It's only half an hour from here.My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowden, their teacher.“And Bradley has a fine market.I'm glad that Tamika can tell us about it.Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn't feel proud of her family's trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed.Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn't notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaica. She heard about Mary's trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John's horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer.“I never get to go anywhere.” Tamika thought to herself.A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika's skates came loose. Now she couldn't even skate.Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by.She walked up with a smile on her face, asking,“You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes.“Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly.Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden's eyes.Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, we don't always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up and seemed to understand what Miss Snowden meant.

At this moment, Jeremy was walking by and saw them. Noticing Tamika's teary eyes, Jeremy swallowed what he'd intended to say. A sense of guilt seized him and he stood there, frozen. Miss Snowden smiled and encouraged him, “An apology never comes late. ” Jeremy raised his eyebrows and said in a low voice, “I shouldn't have said that. Sorry. ” Tamika looked down at her skates, wiped her tears and murmured, “Actually, that's OK. It's my skates”, spinning the loose wheel.
“I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Grabbing her skates, Jeremy tightened the screws in no time. He looked up brightly and handed the skates to Tamika. Tamika tried her skates, and surprisingly, they were working well. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks”. Jeremy felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time. You know, I didn't go anywhere either this summer. ” he said. Then they three looked at each other and burst into laughter. Truly, they did not have to travel far to learn anything new.

It was the first day of our new grade.Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look.In came our teacher Ms.Green, followed by an ordinary-looking boy.
“This boy's name is Mark,” Ms.Green announced.“He comes from another school, and he's going to be in our class from today.Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities, considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing,” Ms.Green spoke up.“Mark actually has hearing problems.Normally, he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Mark insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write your words on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class into noises. Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise.Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms.Green calmed everyone down.“I'd like someone to personally help him out throughout the day.Do I have any volunteers?”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself.I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything.Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms.Green's.
“How about you, James? She asked me.“Is it okay for you to take care of Mark just for today?”

[范文]
Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their classmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn't been anywhere bombarded them with inquiries. Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the classroom. Obviously, confused about the sudden noisy situation, Mark turned to me for explanations in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms. Green, whose words I set down on paper for Mark.
Then Mark rose from his chair and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Mark shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn't be intelligent. Then his voice was drowned out by a thunderous outburst of applause. Having a lump in my throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover.

At age 10, I stood in front of my new class, my new classmates looking at me with mild interest as my teacher introduced me.I joined in the middle of the school year. There were 41 students in my new class.I was the 42nd.
All my classmates sat in pairs except for this one girl, Kate.I went and sat down next to her and gave her a small, uncertain smile. She smiled in return. The class started and we didn't talk until lunch time.At lunch time, I pulled out my lunch box, packed by my mother. It had fried rice with home-made cakes and a small box of fruits.Clearly, my mom had spent time packing this yummy lunch. This girl took out a small box with bread butter inside. In India, it's pretty rare for kids to just get bread butter for lunch. The only time I had bread butter for lunch was if my mom was unwell. So I thought that was what the problem here was.I offered her a small part of my lunch and forgot all about it.The next day, she again had bread butter.Well, I thought, her mother might have fallen ill, so she was taking time to recover.I again offered her a part of my lunch. This went on for a week. Then one day, I asked the one question that I shouldn't have.“Is your mom not well?”
In fact, I wasn't prepared for the answer.Later, I knew that her mother, who worked in a supermarket, was in poor health. She constantly stayed at home with no income.I didn't know what to do.So I did the most obvious thing.I went home and told my mom that my lunch wasn't enough and I still felt hungry after eating it.My mom started packing a bigger lunch. And in school, I'd tell Kate that my mom had packed me a lunch too big, so could she please help me finish it? Then I asked her what her favorite dish was.“Naan,” she whispered.

[范文]
When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled. Naan was not a common dish in our household, and my mom wasn't sure if she could prepare it, but she promised she would try. The next day, I was thrilled to find that my lunch box now contained a piece of Naan, and I eagerly shared it with Kate. Seeing her smiling face made me feel really happy inside. From that day on, my mom would occasionally pack some Indian delicacies for me to share with Kate, and I would be more than happy to do so.
I moved out of that school soon after and didn't stay in touch with Kate. However, this experience taught me an important lesson about kindness and understanding. Often, we judge people too quickly, without realizing their underlying struggles. While it may seem small, sharing my lunch with Kate helped me to connect with her on a deeper level and to understand her better. As I grew older, I would try to apply this lesson in my daily life—to be a little kinder, a little more empathetic, and a little more understanding of people's struggles.

It was a cold December, at the tail end of the Great Depression, and things were tough.Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. My father had died five years earlier, leaving us worse off; we relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were secondhand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school.Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us.Our rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn't pay it, and we knew we would move out right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. It was four days before Christmas.Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent. That way we'd have a roof over our heads for a little while longer.
Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
What Mom didn't know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots—boots that weren't patched; boots with no cardboard in it.I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon.I was very excited as I hurried up the shopping center for it.On the way, I noticed a grocery store.

[范文]
The Christmas lights and decorations held me, and I slowed my pace. It was then that I realized in our dim house, we had no lights, no decorations and no money for Christmas. A strange sense of guilt suddenly engulfed me. With Pierre Paris boots still in my mind, I tried to convince myself there was at least French toast tonight. However, my family's disappointed faces on that cold Christmas kept lingering in my mind clearly. After what seemed like a century, I ultimately made the resolution and stepped into the grocery store, eyes brimming with determination. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas decorations. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money and went back to my house.
Once home I piled the groceries on the porch (门廊) and knocked on the door. Out came my thin mom. The instant she unlocked the door, the groceries fell inside. Staring hard at these items, she was dumbfounded. Tears threatening to spill over my eyes, I hollered, “Merry Christmas, Mother! There really is a Santa Claus!” Words seemed to fail to convey her emotions so that she embraced me tightly. It was when a half-choking “Thanks” escaped from her mouth that a sense of achievement surged through me. I bet I would never have had such satisfaction if I had bought the Pierre Paris boots then. I had a lot of explaining to do as we unpacked all the food. That night, I, an eleven-year-old boy, received the most precious Christmas gift—my responsibility and satisfaction for my family.

On a weekend, a woman won a big bag of coins at a game machine. She took a break for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to put the coins in her room.
“I'll be right back and we'll go to eat,” she told her husband. Then she carried the bag to the lift.As she was about to walk into the lift she noticed two men already aboard.
Both were huge, very huge figures. The woman was scared. Her first thought was: “These two are going to rob me.” Her next thought was: “Don't be afraid. They look like nice gentlemen.”
But fear seized her.She stood and stared at the two men.She felt anxious and ashamed. She hoped they didn't read her mind.Surely, they knew her hesitation about joining them in the lift.It was all too obvious. Her face was red.She couldn't just stand there, so with an effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the lift.Avoiding eye contact, she turned around and faced the lift doors as they closed.
A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The lift didn't move.Panic consumed her.“Oh dear,” she thought, “I'm about to be robbed!”
Her heart sank and sweat poured. Then one of the men said, “Hit the floor.” Instinct (本能) told her: Do what they tell you.The bag of coins flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the lift carpet.A shower of coins rained down on her.“Take my money and spare me,” she prayed.More seconds passed.
She heard one of the men say politely, “Madam, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button.” The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out.He couldn't help laughing.

She lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up. She felt confused and struggled to stand up. That man continued, “When I told my friend here to hit the floor, I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor. I didn't mean for you to hit the floor, Madam. ” He spoke pleasantly with a smile.
Then, the lift arrived at her floor. They then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they said to her “Good evening. ” As she slipped in her room, she could hear them bursting into laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman tried to pretend everything was alright. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband.

On a warm summer evening in Surat, my wife and I were on our way to the grocery store, when I noticed a man sitting on the pavement under a street light.Something about him made me stop.He sat motionless, his steady gaze fixed on an object only he could see.His beard was long and untidy, much like the matted hair on his head.An abandoned advertisement banner (横幅) hung loosely around his waist was his only protection from the environment. The vacant look in his eyes indicated he was possibly incapable of normal mental function.
We tried asking him a few questions, but he showed no signs of having heard or understood us.He just sat there, staring into the darkness, unaware of our presence. It was quite apparent that he was in need of help and we thought a while about what we could do.“He looks hungry,” my wife remarked, “but there is no point in giving him money.” I agreed.“Let's buy him a loaf of bread instead,” I suggested.
It took us a while to finish our shopping. When we returned to the spot where we had first seen the man, he wasn't there. We looked around, but there was no sign of him.Disappointed, we decided to go home, wondering what to do with the loaf of bread.
We'd barely gone a hundred meters when we spotted him.Driven by hunger, he had crossed the road and was seated with a family of migrant labours, who had camped there. They were workers who were tired out from a long day work under the boiling summer sun and struggled to support family.Surprisingly, none of the family members seemed to mind his presence. In fact, he looked to be quite welcome. The family had accepted him without question, just as they would accept a visiting relative or a close friend.Curious, I stopped my motorcycle in the shadows and watched.

[范文]
It was dinner time when a lady was roasting meat over an open fire with her family. As she rolled and roasted more meat, she handed the beggar a share, keeping an eye on him to make sure that his plate was not empty. The beggar was eating hungrily from an aluminum plate. She smiled as she watched him dig into the food clumsily, dropping every other share on to his chest and then to the ground. The other members of the family chatted happily as they ate, the meat disappearing faster than the cheerful lady could make them.
Watching for a while, we were deeply touched. The scene where the family worked and earned a few rupees under the boiling summer sun to keep their stomachs from growling came to mind. Overcome with guilt, we placed the loaf of bread near the man and rode away. Not until then did we learn the true meaning of giving and sharing. That family was far from wealthy, but they shared what they had, not something they had no use for, or something they could easily afford, like a loaf of bread.

I was packing lunch for my two children and myself when I suddenly began to doubt whether this was necessary. It was so early in the day that it was still dark outside, and I was making sandwiches.I thought about just sending lunch money and getting an extra half hour of sleep.Being a single mom, I needed all the shut-eye I could get.
So why was I adding this stress to my life? It's all because of genetics (遗传).
I remember my grandmother telling me how, many years ago, she packed leftovers (剩饭) for my grandfather's lunch. He loved them but always seemed to come home hungry. Finally, after much questioning, he admitted he had been giving away half his lunch to a co-worker who had none of his own. From that day forward, my grandmother always sent extra—just in case.
With five kids in school at the same time, my mom didn't have time to pack lunches. We ate cafeteria food, which was fine with us.In the world of our primary school, it was not cool to bring your lunch from home. There was an exception to the no-pack rule, however. As a punishment, we were forced to bring our own lunch for however many days my mom chose to keep us.My time of suffering came in third grade.I had broken the rules. For four days, my noontime dinner consisted of a cheese and mustard sandwich, a bag of chips and one lonely cookie.By Friday my mom changed her mind. And although I still brought my lunch from home, she packed it for me.
That afternoon I opened my lunchbox to find my favorite egg salad sandwich, a choice apple and a whole giant cake with a note taped on top: “Just in case you want to share.” To my 10-year-old eyes, that cake looked big enough to feed the world.I was in heaven as I offered piece after piece to my friends. It was the best lunch of my life.

[范文]
As I continued packing lunch for my kids, I thought about my grandmother and mother. I never forgot the sacrifice it took for my grandparents to share what little food they had during the Depression. And that my mother continues to do the same. To this day, Thanksgiving at her home always includes at least two guests who are “down on their luck”. None have left her home without a few bucks in their pockets and a grocery bag full of leftovers—just in case they want to share.
I emptied my own packed lunch on the table and divided it between the children, then made two more sandwiches. Although our grocery budget was tight and there was little room for extras, I knew—because of my grandmother and mom—there were others who had much, much less. By sharing the little we had, I was carrying on a tradition that started more than 70 years ago—a lesson of kindness that I could pass on to my own kids. As I dropped a package of noodles into my purse for my new meal, my son and daughter skidded into the kitchen, grabbed their lunches and headed for the door. “I packed extra today,” I called out. “Just in case. ”

When young, I worked as an English teacher in a university.During the summer vacation, I was invited to be an instructor at a high school leadership camp by a college.Having been highly involved in many campus activities, I jumped at the opportunity.
About an hour into the first day of camp, immersed (沉浸于) in communications and interactions, I noticed the boy in black for the first time.Small and skinny, the boy was seated alone, staring into space and his obvious discomfort and shyness made him appear fragile. The desperate loneliness he revealed almost stopped me from approaching him, but I remembered the instructions from the senior staff—to stay alert for campers who might fall left out.
I could sense that he was in a new world, that this whole surroundings appeared foreign to him.But I somehow knew it wouldn't be right to push him, either. That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my concerns about him, I explained to my fellow staff members my impression of him and asked them to pay special attention and spend time with him when they could. In the meantime, it struck me that I should do what I could to give him a hand.I argued that he needed a friend, one who could share happiness and sorrow with him.I hoped to be his friend, his real friend to help him go through the challenging period.

An idea occurred to me abruptly. Whether he would say yes or not I would try to invite him to our party tonight. As I walked toward him I said, “Hi, my name is Kate and I'm one of the instructor. It's nice to meet you. How are you?” In a shaky, sheepish voice he unwillingly answered, “Okay, I guess. ” I calmly asked him if he wanted to join the activity and meet some new people. He quietly replied, “No, this is not really my interest. ” I had already knew the answer, so I left him alone. However, the next day, I tried again. This time I found several campers to come with me. When we approached to him, I tried again, with the same questions as before, “How are you doing? Are you okay? Would you like to come with us?” He refused us again. But I had no plan to give up. Therefore, I would invite him to every activity that followed.
Half a year later, I heard from him. There was an invitation of graduation party in the letter. When it was time for the senior high students to say goodbye to each other, a party was held for them to enjoy the last moment of their friendship. They gathered in the hall, singing, dancing and talking. I looked around to see what the boy was doing. Suddenly, I saw what would be one of the most vivid memories of my life. The boy was surrounded by other students, who listened to his stories with great interest. The boy, who was quite different from how he reacted to the group activity, turned to be talkative. It was obvious that his inspiring description attracted his listeners. In that instant, I realized that you may never know how much each ask may mean to someone else.

As we were conversing, I noticed he smelt of alcohol.I also noticed his wrinkled, sun darkened and unshaven face, his messy hair and clothes. But what I noticed most was his clear, large, blue eyes. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and I believe it, if you look closely, you can pretty much tell the kind of soul a person has through their eyes. His eyes were almost indescribable. They were so spellbinding, not a bit of hate in them.Looking at his very rough appearance, I could tell he'd been down a very hard road.Somehow, despite the road he had been down, there was no hate in his eyes, only love.
I asked him if he wanted a smoke, and he said yes, so I gave him one, then I let him keep the whole pack, for which he seemed genuinely grateful.I started asking him where he was from, where he was heading, whether he had a family, etc.He told me he had been on the road for six days, coming from Arizona where he had recently had a heart attack and heart surgery. He was pretty much healed up but couldn't find work.He was heading back to his birthplace of Kansas City, which is where I was born as well.He said he lost his wife to a brain tumor ten years ago, and that he never had kids because his wife couldn't have any.We talked the rest of the way, and I had a feeling that there was something about this guy that I couldn't put my finger on, but it was something special.

So we got to Brady and I said, “Well, this is the end of my line.” He looked at me with gratitude in his eyes and thanked me again for the ride. As he stepped out of the car, I couldn't help but think of his story and struggle for life. So I added, “When we stop, I'm going to give you some money, too, so it will be some help on your way. ” This is a decision I had subconsciously made in this instance.
As I mentioned, I told him I was going to give him some money. He looked at me with gratitude in his eyes and said, “Thank you, but I don't need your money. Just your kindness and conversation were enough for me. ” As we said our goodbyes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for this man. Despite the hardships he had faced, he carried himself with grace and a genuine love for others. He taught me that sometimes, the most valuable gift we can give someone is our time and understanding.

Roy was out and I went upstairs to his bedroom to wait for him. Sitting in his room, I wondered whether Roy had stolen the money, but I really hoped it wasn't him. To pass the time, I picked out a book to read. Surprisingly, a lot of paper notes dropped out of the book. It looked as if there was about £500 there. I was so shocked that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands.
At that moment, the door swung open, and Roy walked in. My mouth fell open and I just looked at him with confusion. Seeing the notes in my hand, he froze with shock, as if rooted on the ground. Then he explained that he didn't steal but earned the money by spending every weekend doing part-time jobs. Breathing a sigh of relief, I trusted him and offered him a heartfelt hug. The next day, the teacher declared that he was mistaken to forget locking the money into his locker. Roy and I smiled at each other with joy.
