People who don’t feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others. However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their, body language conveys a positive message.Practice these gestures and movements to project an airport confidence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention, while maintaining distance indicates that you are disinterested. Research suggests that nonverbal signals such as leaning forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of interest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious. Everything from hand gestures to your walking pace can make a difference; slow down and notice how you feel more confident when you take your time.
The key, however, is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while moving more slowly. Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and slouched (耷拉的) posture may cause people to see you less confident.
Keep Your Chin Up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking? Instead, keeping your head up and facing your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel unnatural initially, but you will eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence, so offer a firm hand when meeting others. How long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or less. Handshakes lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of the interaction and more anxiety.
21. Which way of walking conveys confidence?
A. Walk fast with head straight up.
B. Move fast with a leaning posture.
C. Walk slowly with proper eye contact.
D. Move slowly with maintained distance.
22. Which body language requires considering the length of time?
A. Lean Forward. B. Slow Your Movements.

23. Who is the text intended for?
A. Those who have a passion for body language.
B. Those who run projects about body language.
C. Those who lack confidence in communication.
D. Those who desire to boost their language skills.

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression — this was the theme of this year’s International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC), held in London from May 11 to 12. Thirty-three young speakers aged 16 to 20 from around the world gathered at The English Speaking Union to tell their stories, including Wu Dongxu, 19, a student from China. To him, the event wasn’t just about giving a speech on first impressions. It also made a strong impression on him.
“Rather than a competition, the experience was more like an inspiring research trip to me, a trip that allowed me to see firsthand the differences and similarities between Chinese and foreign cultures,” said Wu.
Apart from the obvious differences in food, transportation and climate, what impressed Wu most was the different styles of Chinese and foreign public speaking.
Although still a teen, Wu is no stranger to the public speaking podium (讲台). He has participated in many speaking competitions since 2017. But on the stage of the IPSC, speakers had no podium to stand behind. They just had to face the audience.
“This was the first time that I gave a speech without a podium, which made me realize how important eye contact and body language are,” said Wu. “It also gave me more freedom to convey more information with my body language instead of just with words.”
Another difference that caught Wu’s attention was the evaluation criteria According to him, in every speaking competition he had participated in in China, things like pronunciation, fluency and quality of language are always important. But to his surprise, in the IPSC accents and grammatical mistakes are not considered in the evaluation process. It is the story itself that matters most.
“Audiences are eager to hear powerful stories, no matter where they are from. That’s because the emotions expressed in them are shared by all human beings although there are the cultural differences.” said Wu. “Diversity, respect, tolerance and understanding — these are what the IPSC really wants to stress and spread.”
24. What is the topic of this year’s IPSC?
A. Cultural difference. B. First impression.
C. Body language. D. English education.
25. What left Wu Dongxu the deepest impression?
A. The food culture. B. The transportation means.
C. The climate. D. The public speaking style.
26. What can we learn about the IPSC?
A. Speakers are allowed to use podiums.
B. Body language plays an important part.
C. Pronunciation and fluency matter a lot.
D. Language quality is considered the most important.
27. What is Wu Dongxu’s attitude towards the IPSC?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Opposed.
C
Modern research on body language — often called nonverbal behavior — began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. That work was inspired, in part, by Charles Darwin’s study “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872).” But it had received little attention for around a century, according to nonverbal communication expert David Matsumoto.
Then modern researchers examined how the brain reacts to facial expressions, and how babies copy facial and hand gestures. And scientists have also realized the complexity (复杂性) of body language.
Much research has suggested that body language is often hard to interpret, or understand. But for years some advisers and experts have been using their knowledge in many practical (实际的) areas.
“I help people influence and persuade others around how trustworthy and credible (可信的) their message is by helping them with their specific nonverbal communication,” said Mark Bowden. He is the author of “Winning Body Language”, a guide for readers including business people and famous people. He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up, as well as their gestures.
Some experts also say they can use those signals to interpret hidden emotions. Joe Navarro is the author of “What Every Body Is Saying.” It is a book about reading a person’s mind from their nonverbal behavior. It’s easy to spot a speaker’s lip movements when he faces a question he doesn’t like, Joe said.
While the work of these experts attracts large audiences, many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable. “Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states,” Matsumoto said. So do some body movements. But “people do all kinds of things with their bodies,” he said. Your raised eyebrow (眉毛) could express doubt — but it might also signal discomfort or surprise. The same hand gesture could mean different things in different cultures, he said.
28. What role did Charles Darwin’s study play according to paragraph 1?
A. It unlocked the secret of the human mind.
B. It promoted the development of human language.
C. It encouraged people to care more about animals.
D. It helped start modern research on body language.
29. What can we infer about Mark Bowden?
A. He gives advice on business language.
B. He teaches people about body language.
C. He focuses mainly on facial expressions.
D. He pays more attention to spoken language.
30. What did David Matsumoto think of Joe Navarro’s methods?
A. They were doubtful.
B. They were instructional.
C. They were necessary.
D. They were experimental.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Is nonverbal behavior that complex?
B. Can body language tell important truths?
C. Do experts know how to interpret emotions?
D. Should you know more about body language?
D
Body language is an essential part of communication and can be just as important as our spoken language exchanges. Body language can be both conscious or unconscious actions, so it is important to make sure your body is sending the same messages as your words to ensure good communication. These actions can strengthen the verbal (口头的) messages you’re sending or it can lead to mistrust or confusion — signs of poor communication and misunderstanding.
Body language can make interacting with others and expressing yourself much easier, but it can also introduce new challenges. Some nonverbal signs unintentionally communicate parts of ourselves that we don’t want others to know. For example, bad posture or fidgeting (坐立不安) may communicate lack of confidence, something we may not intend for others to know about us. But body language can strengthen our verbal messages and solidify what we are telling others. Facing someone with eye contact or taking notes while someone is speaking can communicate genuine interest. Without these signs, teachers may not be able to assess a student’s understanding.
When you’re speaking sincerely, it’s natural for your body language to respond to your words through gestures or facial expressions. We also use gestures in conversations to tell stories or describe objects, often using hand signals to show how big or small something is. These are largely unconscious, naturally occurring forms of body language.
It can be difficult to communicate confidence in your actions when you may not feel it internally. When you display confident body language, such as good posture or eye-contact, even if you’re making a conscious effort, studies have shown that it can lead to feeling more confident. When speaking to others, practice controlling impulses to fidget and planting your feet confidently to increase self-esteem.
32. What would your body language tell if it can’t go with your speech?
A. A probable disbelief. B. True meaning behind words.
C. An unclear condition. D. A dull speech.
33. Why does the author give some examples in paragraph 2?
A. To show body language can help us all the time.
B. To tell body language can show the true side of us.
C. To explain how challenging it is to read body language.
D. To tell teachers how to assess a student’s understanding.
34. What does the author intend to tell in the last two paragraphs?
A. Hand signals are essential ways to make ourselves understood.
B. Naturally occurring forms of body language makes us confident.
C. Proper body language can help us a lot in gaining confidence.
D. When speaking to others, try your best to hide your body language.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Knowing Your Friends with Body Language
B. Understanding Others by Body Language
C. Being Smart in Showing Your Body Language
D. Helping Communicate with Body Language

How to Read Candidates’ Body Language in an Interview
Body language matters, especially in interviews. 36 Our posture, gestures, movements or facial expressions can shape our reputations. Learning to read body language is about understanding candidates’ motives.
Reading body language during interviews can provide valuable insights into a candidate’s personality. 37 Here are some common interview body language signals that you can learn to read.
Observe extreme behaviour. A candidate’s harmless action doesn’t mean they won’t fitin well at your company. But be careful about extreme behaviours, like a person constantly checking their phone.
38 You can read people’s body language by observing changes in their movements or posture. Imagine, for example, that a candidate suddenly starts tapping their foot. Maybe they feel the interview is taking too long. Or perhaps they’re facing an uncomfortable question.
Connect the dots. 39 For example, people may cross their arms when they’re cold. But, when you see a candidate crossing their arms, crossing their legs and balling their fists at the same time, prepare yourself for an aggressive (咄咄逼人的) answer.
Candidate experience greatly depends on an interviewer’s body language. Positive body language can make candidates relax and open up. Negative body language can spark (引发) defensive and reserved reactions. 40
A. Spot the difference.
B. Ask detailed questions.
C. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.
D. They don’t necessarily act the same way all the time.
E. However, understanding body language isn’t an exact science.
F. You can’t always tell what a specific gesture means on its own.
G. Be aware of mistakes to preserve a positive candidate experience.

Different cultures communicate in very different ways. In Asia, people use lots of body language, facial expressions, and silence 56 (express) meaning. For instance, in Japan, it might be 57 (normal) viewed as rude to directly object to a statement. However, in the West, speaking directly is not only normal but valued. People place 58 (much) focus on the actual words being used than on cues (暗示) of body language.
Additionally, in China, it is common for someone to smile when they don’t understand something. This could be 59 (confuse) for a Westerner who might think this means the listener understands and agrees with 60 is being said.
Another communicative feature 61 is viewed differently across the world is interruptions (插嘴). In many 62 (part) of the West, interrupting another person when they are speaking is considered to be rude. However, in some African and Latin American countries, it is viewed as a means to join and actively participate in the conversation.
Even within 63 same continent (洲), cultures can vary from country to country. For example, in the UK, it is very common to say “please” and “thank you” to someone 64 (serve) you in a shop or restaurant, but in Spain, these expressions 65 (hear) much less often and are reserved more for requesting or receiving kindness.

It was the last day of the month-long summer camp. All the camp leaders and volunteers were preparing for the grand wrap-up event that evening. Some were setting up chairs and tables outside; some were preparing water balloons for games we would play later; and some were cutting fruits and veggies for snacks.
One of the leaders, George, came to me, handed me a small broom and a dustpan, and asked me to sweep the gym. Alone. While the others were chatting and laughing outside. While the gym was dusty and stuffy (不通风的) after weeks of camp and crafts.
I didn’t have a choice. I was sixteen, and George was my elder. I was a staff member at camp, and George was my employer. I put on as cheerful a face as I could and began to sweep the floor of the gymnasium.
Every time I made a decent (合宜的) pile of dust and scraps (残羹剩饭) to push into the dustpan, I had a nice little part of the gym cleared. But I would look up and see the rest of the gym and realize how big the job was. The whole situation felt so unfair.
I wasn’t really happy then. I’m not proud of it, but I was angry as well. I could hear the sounds of people talking, laughing, and generally having a great time outside. There was silence in the gym, except for my sweep, sweep, sweep.
During a break between sweeps, I looked up. George was quietly and matter-of-factly moving the speakers and cleaning the stage at the front of the gym. I noticed he worked alone as well. He didn’t seem particularly excited about what he was doing, but I noted the calmness and joy in his eyes as he went about his work, doing what had to be done because he was there and he was able to do it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

My mum has always told me to help others. One day last week I was walking back to my home and I passed by an old lady who seemed to be in trouble. I turned back and asked if she was OK, she explained that she was sick and had to struggle to walk with her shopping bags. I offered to carry her things and walked her back home, but she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her she talked with me and introduced herself. I in turn told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbor who had looked after my dad when my grandmother died thirty years ago. My dad had often spoken of her but I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small active kindness ended in a chance meeting that meant so much to the two people.
A
People who don’t feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others.

A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Opposed.
B 25. D 26. B 27. A

根据第一段中“Modern research on body language — often called nonverbal behavior — began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. That work was inspired, in part, by Charles Darwin’s study “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872).” (关于肢体语言的现代研究——通常被称为非语言行为——始于20世纪60年代和70年代,旨在证明面部表情表达情感的普遍性。这项工作的部分灵感来自查尔斯·达尔文的研究《人类和动物的情感表达》(1872))”可知,查尔斯·达尔文的研究帮助开启了对肢体语言的现代研究。故选D。
29. 推理判断题。根据第四段““I help people influence and persuade others around how trustworthy and credible (可信的) their message is by helping them with their specific nonverbal communication.” said Mark Bowden. He is the author of “Winning Body Language”, a guide for readers including business people and famous people. He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up, as well as those gestures.(“我帮助人们通过特定的非语言交流来影响和说服别人,让他们相信他们的信息是值得信赖和可信的。”Mark Bowden说。他是《成功的肢体语言》一书的作者。为商界人士、名人等读者提供指南。他关注的是一个人将身体面向何处,他们的身体占据了多少空间,以及那些手势)”可推知,Mark Bowden教授人们如何使用肢体语言。故选B。
30. 推理判断题。根据第五段中“Some experts also say they can use those signals to interpret hidden emotions. Joe Navarro is the author of “What Every Body Is Saying.” It is a book about reading a person’s mind from their nonverbal behavior.(一些专家还表示,他们可以利用这些信号来解读隐藏的情绪。乔·纳瓦罗是《人人都在说什么》一书的作者。这是一本关于从一个人的非语言行为中读出一个人的思想的书。)”可知,Joe Navarro认为我们可以从一个人的非语言行为中读出一个人的思想。结合最后一段中的“While the work of these experts attracts large audiences many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable. “Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states.” David Matsumoto said. So do some body movements. But “people do all kinds of things with their bodies,” he said. Your raised eyebrow (眉毛) could express doubt — but it might also signal discomfort or surprise. (虽然这些专家的工作吸引了大量观众,但许多科学家不确定他们的方法是否可靠。“我们的面部表情显示了某些类型的情绪状态。”David Matsumoto说。一些身体动作也是如此。但是“人们用身体做各种各样的事情,”他说。你扬起的眉毛可能表示怀疑,但也可能表示不舒服或惊讶。)”可推知,David Matsumoto认为Joe Navarro的方法令人怀疑。故选A。
根据第一段中的“Modern research on body language — often called nonverbal behavior — began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. (关于肢体语言的现代研究——通常被称为非语言行为——始于20世纪60年代和70年代,旨在证明面部表情表达情感的普遍性)”和最后一段中““But people do all kinds of things with their bodies.” he said.
A 33. B 34. C 35. D
从第一段“These actions can strengthen the verbal (口头的) messages you’re sending or it can lead to mistrust or confusion — signs of poor communication and misunderstanding.(这些行为可能会强化你发送的口头信息,也可能导致不信任或困惑——沟通不畅和误解的迹象。)” 故选A项。
从第二段“Some nonverbal signs unintentionally communicate parts of ourselves that we don’t want others to know. (一些非语言符号无意中传达了我们自己不想让别人知道的部分。)”可以推断出,作者举例说明有些非语言性的符号能展现我们真实的一面。故选B项。
34. 推理判断题。由文章倒数第二段“When you’re speaking sincerely, it’s natural for your body language to respond to your words through gestures or facial expressions. We also use gestures in conversations to tell stories or describe objects, often using hand signals to show how big or small something is. These are largely unconscious, naturally occurring forms of body language.(当你真诚地说话时,你的肢体语言会通过手势或面部表情来回应你的话,这是很自然的。我们在谈话中也会用手势来讲故事或描述物体,通常用手势来显示物体的大小。这些大多是无意识的、自然发生的肢体语言。)”以及下段“It can be difficult to communicate confidence in your actions when you may not feel it internally. When you display confident body language, such as good posture or eye-contact, even if you’re making a conscious effort, studies have shown that it can lead to feeling more confident. When speaking to others, practice controlling impulses to fidget and planting your feet confidently to increase self-esteem.(当你可能没有内在感觉时,很难对自己的行为表达信心。研究表明,当你表现出自信的肢体语言时,比如良好的姿势或眼神交流,即使你在有意识地努力,也会让你感到更加自信。在与他人交谈时,练习控制烦躁的冲动,自信地站稳脚跟,以增强自尊。)”可知,作者讲述的合适的肢体语言能让我们展现自信的一面可推断,合适的身体语言能在自信中帮助我们。故选C项。
35. 主旨大意题。由文章第一段“Body language is an essential part of communication and can be just as important as our spoken language exchanges. Body language can be both conscious or unconscious actions, so it is important to make sure your body is sending the same messages as your words to ensure good communication. These actions can strengthen the verbal (口头的) messages you’re sending or it can lead to mistrust or confusion — signs of poor communication and misunderstanding.(肢体语言是交际的重要组成部分,与口语交流同样重要。肢体语言可以是有意识的,也可以是无意识的,所以确保你的身体发出的信息与你的言语相同,以确保良好的沟通是很重要的。这些行为可能会强化你发送的口头信息,也可能导致不信任或困惑——沟通不畅和误解的迹象。)”以及下文可知,文章讲述了身体语言在帮助我们沟通上的作用。所以D项Helping Communicate with Body Language(用肢体语言帮助沟通)符合语境。故选D项。

故填that或which。

故填are heard。

Dear Robert,
I am very glad to share with you something about body language in China.
In China, we wave our hands to say “hello” or “goodbye”. We usually greet our guests by shaking hands with them. Some people may nod and smile instead of shaking hands. Besides, like in many other countries, we nod our heads to say “yes” and shake our heads to say “no”. Also, people will hold their thumbs up to praise a person if he does something great. Sometimes, we bow to show great respect and thanks to others.
I hope this information will be helpful to you and look forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua

I watched him silently for the next ten minutes. My broom and I were making slow but sure progress across the gym. Slowly, my unhappiness and anger left my heart, and in its place grew an appreciation for what I saw in George. Being a leader doesn’t mean getting to do all the fun things. It means sacrifice and hard work. I cleaned the whole gym with a small broom, one sweep at a time. As I finished and passed him, he looked up and smiled at me and I smiled back. I was tired; it was a tired smile; but it was a real smile.
“Thanks, Laura.” he said and nodded as if acknowledging the small sacrifice I had made. I forgot what I said in return. Probably “You’re welcome.” But what I should have said and what I want to say to him now is this: “Thank you for teaching me and showing me what being a good leader looks like. Thank you for the opportunity to sweep the floor of the gym, because now whenever I feel discouraged, I remember that half hour, and am reminded that doing the hard, right thing matters, no matter how I feel about it.”
①注视:watch/observe/look at
②认可:acknowledge/approve/admit
①.感谢:showing his appreciation/show his gratitude/be grateful
②.气馁:discouraged/lose heart/down-hearted
But what I should have said and what I want to say to him now is this: “Thank you for teaching me and showing me what being a good leader looks like.(运用了what引导的主语从句和宾语从句)
Thank you for the opportunity to sweep the floor of the gym, because now whenever I feel discouraged, I remember that half hour, and am reminded that doing the hard, right thing matters, no matter how I feel about it.”(运用了because引导的原因状语从句、whenever引导的时间状语从句和no matter how引导的让步状语从句)
