Ask any pet parent, and they'll tell you the same thing:travelling with dogs is
complicated.
When it comes to pets who aren't service animals, most commercial airlines only
allow small dogs-typically,those weighing up to 20 pounds-to accompany their human
owners in the plane. And these companies require owners to keep their pup in a pet carrier
for the entire flight.Larger dogs are placed in the cargo hold()beneath the plane-
a terrifying and potentially dangerous experience.
Now,a new "dog-first"airline aims to relieve all that stress.Bark Air,an airline
created by the pet company Bark, took its first flight in May,2024.
Before takeoff, dogs can snack on treats and wear noise-cancelling earmuffs and
calming jackets to ensure they have a stress-free flight.Once in the air, flight crew serve
dogs their favorite drinks to help with any ear discomfort. The flight costs $6,000 for a
dog and its human to book a one-way flight from New York to Los Angeles. The company
acknowledged that the prices are cost-prohibitive."Televisions,telephones,VCRs and
DVD players,to automobiles, train and boat travel, and even human air travel-all of these
started with very high prices until demand was proven and the costs could be brought
lower by serving the masses,"said Matt Meeker,Bark's co-founder.
United States airlines transported 188,223 animals in 2022.Of those, seven animals
died, one was injured and one was lost, resulting in an incident rate of 0.48 per 10,000.
Even when flights go smoothly, many dogs experience discomfort and anxiety while flying
in the cargo hold.To illustrate this point,Meeker volunteered to ride inside a crate()
in the cargo hold of a plane on a nearly four-hour flight."I don't know why any person
would ever choose to do this to their dog,"Meeker said."It's an absolute horror show back
here. There has to be a better way.
24.What does the author want to convey in the second paragraph?
A.The dangers both pets and airlines have to face.
B.The competitions between commercial airlines.
C.The different treatment different dogs receive.
D.The background of the new "dog-first"airline.
25.What's the reason for the "dog-first"airline's high prices according to Meeker?
A.The long distance of the flight.
B.The airline's great service.
C.The potential value of dogs.
D.The inadequate demand.
26.Why did Meeker travel inside a crate in a cargo hold?
A.To investigate airline pet incidents.B.To experience pets'real feelings.
C.To set up his pet company Bark.
D.To open a new“dog-first”airline.
27.What's the text mainly about?
A.A new airline for dogs taking flight.B.A debate on whether pets take planes.
C.A guideline for dogs to travel by air.D.A company fighting for pets'rights.

What's Pennsylvania Dutch, and where is it spoken? The answers to these questions
aren't what you think.
This language developed in the second half of the 18th century, when German
speakers immigrated (to Pennsylvania,USA,says Mark Louden, professor of
German and Religious Studies."The crucial event in all immigrant language situations is
what the children of immigrants do,which is essentially not receiving a language from their
parents, but taking their parents'input and creating something new,"Louden explained.
That was the case with Pennsylvania Dutch, and as generations have passed, the
language has moved further and further from its European homeland,Germany. Why is it
called Pennsylvania Dutch if it comes from Germany?According to Louden,it's a
preservation of"an older use of Dutch'in British and American English to refer to
speakers of Germanic languages in western and central Europe.
The majority of its speakers are Amish or Old Order Mennonites. There're
approximately 400,000 people speaking it throughout America and Canada, but primarily
in Pennsylvania,Ohio and Indiana.Louden says the number of speakers is growing
rapidly, and that no other language communities in the world are growing faster. There're
Pennsylvania Dutch speakers who aren't Amish or Mennonite, but they've greatly reduced
in number over time.Referred to as the Fancy Dutch, they also tended to live in rural
areas and take part in farming, but some of them pursued higher education and married
outside their linguistic community. The Fancy Dutch ended up switching to using only
English.
Pennsylvania Dutch has survived for centuries thanks to its speakers'lifestyles. The
Amish and Old Order Mennonites lead very traditional lives;they live in rural
communities, have little or no contact with the outside world and marry within their own
social group. However, the factor that so many babies are born every year plays the vital
part.Louden points to another possible reason:they continue using a form of standard
German for worship()purposes,which makes them use Pennsylvania Dutch as an
important oral language.
28.What do the children of immigrants do according to Louden?
A.They have the spirit of creativity.
B.They pass their parents'languages.
C.They break down traditional ideas.D.They're often new trend's pioneers.
29.What can we say about Pennsylvania Dutch?
A.It has widely been spread in Europe.
B.It has much to do with Dutch people.
C.It is deeply rooted in Germany.
D.It is European immigrants'language.

A.They belonged to Amish long ago.
B.They changed their language in the end.
C.They've been promoting Dutch culture.

31.What contribute most to the survival of Pennsylvania Dutch?
A.The living communities.
B.The religious ceremonies
C.The traditions of marriage.
D.The high birth rates of babies.

In a concerning development, researchers recently documented 75 streams across
Alaska's remote Brooks Range that have turned from clear to an alarming orange color over
the past decade.
Permafrost,or permanently frozen ground,acts as a natural barrier,preventing water
from going deeply into the soil and keeping groundwater flowing on shallow layers.
However,as the Arctic continues to warm at a great rate, this frozen barrier is beginning to
thaw(),allowing water to go deeper into the ground and changing the flow paths and
chemistry of the water that eventually makes its way into streams and rivers.
The research team, led by ecologist Jonathan O'Donnell, investigated the causes and
consequences of this disturbing trend.By analyzing satellite imagery from the past three
decades, the researchers were able to pinpoint the timing of the color change to within the
last 5-10 years, and that was the period of rapid warming in the region.Water samples
collected from the orange streams revealed significantly lower pH levels and higher
concentrations of sulfate(硫酸盐),iron and some poisonous metals such as zinc and
nickel, compared to nearby unimpaired reference streams. The presence of these elements
in the water is consistent with the weathering()of sulfide minerals, which can occur
when permafrost thaw exposes previously frozen mineral deposits to air and water, allowing
chemical reactions to take place.
The consequences of this sudden shift in water chemistry are far-reaching and
potentially harmful for the delicate Arctic ecosystem.
As the Arctic continues to warm and permafrost thaw speeds up,it is likely that more
streams and rivers will be impacted by the mobilization of iron and poisonous metals. This
study highlights the urgent need for increased monitoring and research to better understand
the extent and long-term consequences of this emerging threat to Arctic ecosystems and
the communities that depend on them.
32.What is the second paragraph mainly about concerning permafrost?
A.The seriousness of its loss.
B.Its influences on nature.
C.Its typical distribution.
D.The concept of its thaw.

A.It may become common.
B.It'll improve land ecosystem.
C.It'll speed up climate change.
D.It may damage local minerals.
35.What's the best title for the text?
A.Can Orange Streams Be Harmful?
B.How Can We Make Streams Clear?

D.Could We Stop Permafrost Thawing?

A majority of people enjoy doing different enjoyable activities when they have enough
free time.36,while others claim they are merely a waste of time.
37.Firstly,if you're absorbed in what you're so fond of doing, you gradually
develop useful skills.For example,having a passion for woodcraft(木工技术)will
definitely help build a house on your own.Furthermore, there're people who'd prefer to
improve their mental abilities when they aren't at work.A case in point is those who
cannot imagine their life without reading classical literature.38.
However, other people claim that past time activities are not worth attention.39
when we are doing a job.In support of their view, they state that as long as you are young
and robust(),you should focus all your energy on making a financial success.
Nevertheless,I disagree with the above-stated position. If you're determined to make
considerable progress in your profession, you'll naturally devote yourself to what you're
doing while at work.Achieving your goal is just a matter of time.40.On the other
hand, everybody can establish themselves as skilled specialists provided they're patient
and display their skills, and you don't need to do this after work.
All in all,I'm still convinced that everything we like doing at leisure has a serious
impact on us all.We should have our own hobbies.
A.As is known,everybody has a hobby
B.So you do not have to work in your free time
C.They want to reflect on moral values very often
D.Working day and night is so common nowadays
E.I believe that hobbies cannot be just a way of killing your spare time
F.Some are of the opinion that hobbies play a significant role in human life
G.Virtually,it would be much more beneficial to put as much effort as possible

短文。
Savannah,a five-year-old from Hancock County,Indiana,found herself in a situation
no child should ever have to face.Yet,she handled it with such remarkable grace that
she's now being admired as a hero.
The incident began with an emergency call to the local 911 operator,Jason Bonham.
To his surprise, the person on the other end was a little girl,Savannah.
Savannah was up late, watching“Frozen(《冰雪奇缘》)”with her father, because
her mother was on a business trip.At 4:00 am,she heard disturbing sounds from the
kitchen. With their pet dog LouLou barking aloud,Savannah went to investigate. In the
kitchen,Savannah found her father on the floor, clutching his chest. She was
terrified but remembered her parents'advice about emergency situations. Her father was
unable to speak, indicating he was in critical condition.
Savannah took the initiative to contact emergency services, calling 911 from the
kitchen wall phone. Her parents had taught her what to do in such situations, which now
proved invaluable.Jason had been in this job for 11 years but was amazed by Savannah's
calmness.Despite the challenging circumstances,Jason was able to gather crucial
information about Savannah's father's condition.Savannah told Jason her father had
difficulty breathing and chest pains, which helped identify the emergency as a possible
heart condition.Jason reported that to the local hospital quickly.
Jason kept Savannah on the line, talking with her with light conversation while
making sure she was keeping an eye on her dad.The exchange also involved introductions
to LouLou and a discussion on“Frozen”.
Savannah kept communicating with Jason until the paramedics(护理人员)arrived..
As the paramedics worked,Savannah displayed another admirable quality. She managed to
keep LouLou calm and out of the way.Her ability to control the situation impressed the
paramedics, one of whom stayed with Savannah until her mother was contacted.
