The Essential Skills for Being Human
Whether it was nature or nurture, I grew into a person who was a bit detached, which was good for a career in journalism but not for emotional availability or a joyous life. In truth, I was a practiced escape artist. If you revealed some vulnerable intimacy to me, I was good at making meaningful eye contact with your shoes and then excusing myself to keep a vitally important appointment with my dry cleaner.
Life has a way of tenderizing you, though. I'm not an exceptional person, but I am a grower.
I have learned something profound along the way. Being openhearted is a prerequisite for being a full, kind and wise human being. But it is not enough. People need social skills:being curious about other people; disagreeing without poisoning relationships; revealing vulnerability at an appropriate pace; being a good listener; knowing how to ask for and offer forgiveness; knowing how to host a gathering where everyone feels embraced; knowing how to see things from another's point of view.
In any collection of humans, there are diminishers and there are illuminators. Diminishers are so into themselves; they make others feel insignificant. They stereotype and label. If they learn one thing about you, they proceed to make a series of assumptions about who you must be.
Illuminators, on the other hand, have a persistent curiosity about other people. They have been trained or have trained themselves in the craft of understanding others. They know how to ask the right questions at the right times- so that they can see things, at least a bit, from another's point of view. They shine the brightness of their care on people and make them feel bigger, respected, lit up.
A person who radiates warmth will bring out the glowing sides of the people he meets, while a person who conveys formality can meet the same people and find them stiff and detached. “Attention,” the psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist writes,“is a moral act: It creates, brings aspects of things into being.”

Volunteer Opportunities for Kids
Animal shelter volunteering
If your child is an animal lover, then volunteering at a local animal shelter could be a great option. Most animal shelters provide volunteer opportunities. They need volunteers for cleaning kennels, feeding, walking dogs and so on. Usually, as long as the child has signed permission from their parents or guardian, they can volunteer as young as 14, even younger if their parents bring them and supervise their volunteer time.
Tutoring
If your child is a good student and enjoys school or even just a specific subject, volunteering to tutor lower grade students is a great opportunity. Helping struggling students catch up or grasp a concept can make your friend feel great. It is an easy and convenient way to get your teen volunteering after school. And we suggest the age should be older than 14.
Youth sports
Another great opportunity to get your kid volunteering is in sports. If your child has years of experience with any sport, they can most likely find an opportunity to help out younger kids. Most youth sports need teenage volunteers to be an assistant coach or a referee. Teenagers can volunteer in maintenance to spruce up (使整洁) fields, or in cleanup after game days. The age of volunteers is required beyond 14. Contact any local sports league to get specifics on where they may be needing volunteers.
Service projects for teens
Cleaning up a common space such as a park or walking trail is a great way to get active in the community, and your teen can even include their friends in their volunteer effort. More detail projects may include something like building a shade structure at a local playground or planting trees. We suggest the age of the kids should be older than 14.
1.Of the following volunteer opportunities, which is suitable for kids under 14?
A.Tutoring. B.Service project s for teens.
C.Youth sports. D.Animal shelter volunteering.
2.What can kids do when volunteering in sports?
A.They can teach younger players.
B.They can give assistance to referees.
C.They can become professional coaches.
D.They are welcome to visit local sports league.
3.Who is the passage intended for?
A.Kids’ parents. B.Sports workers.

Ms. McIntyre, 38, worked as a publisher. She suffered brain cancer and her health got worse despite some medical treatment. But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with cancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay.
Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. The group can pay off medical bills for about 100 times less money than they cost. In other words, for every 100 donated, the group can pay off 10,000 in unpaid medical bills.
Unfortunately, Ms. McIntyre passed away before long. Mr. Gregory posted a message for Ms. McIntyre on her social media accounts. “If you’re reading this, I have passed away,” the post began. Then the post explained, “To celebrate my life, I’ve arranged to buy up others’ medical debts and then destroy the debts.”
The couple had set up a page on a website to raise money for this purpose. They had hoped to raise about $20,000. Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. By November 22, 2023, Ms. McIntyre’s web page had raised over $627,000, or enough money to pay off about $60 million in medical debts.
Mr. Gregory planned a special event in December to celebrate Ms. McIntyre’s life and to announce how many millions of dollars of medical debts her efforts had paid for.
4.Why did Ms. McIntyre feel luckier than some other people?
A.The doctors eventually cured her.
B.Her disease didn’t become worse.
C.She had security about medical care.
D.She had a decent job before being ill.
5.How did Ms. McIntyre and her husband help others?
A.By paying for their daily debts.
B.By giving away money to them.
C.By purchasing medical insurance for them.
D.By ridding them of debts from treatments.
6.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The couple’s anticipation. B.The public involvement.
C.The operation of a website. D.The increase of medical debts.
7.Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre?
A.Influential and understanding. B.Humorous and elegant.
C.Cautious and promising. D.Enthusiastic and adaptable.

My husband made a little two-story house that mirrored our own in color and design for our Little Free Library, while I carefully selected books from our shelves. The idea struck us immediately-instead of loading boxes into the car for yet another used book sale, we could simply walk them to the roadside.
Fifteen or so years later, it’s safe to say that thousands of books, as well as the occasional DVDs, CDs and jigsaw puzzles have been shared through our little library. Located on a busy street just a few blocks from a subway station, our little library sees dozens, perhaps hundreds, of passers-by each day.
Many of those who use our library do not hesitate to share their love of this neighborhood resource. One gentleman regularly stops by to pick up books for a nearby retirement home. At other times, we have received cards and gifts, including chocolates and even a personalized sketch (素描) from a local artist.
Like the people who use our library, the books that come and go reflect the broad diversity of our city. Arabic, French and Russian books are the large part among the dominant English-language books. I have even collected favorite books of mine in languages I don’t understand, simply for the joy of adding another edition to my collection. Surprisingly, our library hasn’t solved our book storage problem-if anything, we now have more books than ever before.
I have heard some complaints that Little Free Libraries do not always serve the purpose of building community and may compete with our public libraries and independent bookstores. This has not been our experience. We continue to buy more books than we need and we are fiercely loyal users of the public system. Our Little Free Library has enhanced our love of reading and has connected us to a community of book lovers in the heart of our busy neighborhood.
8.Why did the author and her husband build the Little Free Library?
A.To prepare for used book sales. B.To make friends with book lovers.
C.To deal with their unwanted books. D.To make use of community resources.
9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.People’s care for the elderly. B.The friendship between library users.
C.People’s love for the Little Free Library. D.The exploration of the community resources.
10.What does the Little Free Library reflect about the neighborhood?
A.Its cultural diversity. B.Its storage problems.
C.Readers’ preferences. D.People’s reading habits.
11.How has the Little Free Library impacted the community?
A.It has strengthened neighborhood connections.
B.It has become a meeting place for local artists.
C.It has weakened public libraries to some degree.
D.It has promoted the rise of independent bookstores.

“Quick, quick, slow, slow,” my husband said as I was trying to focus. We frequently stepped on each other’s feet. Both of us were being rhythmically challenged, and we figured a series of lessons might help us look somewhat elegant on the floor. However, it didn’t.
It didn’t matter that the lessons didn’t pay off. Our learning something new together gave us a string of good memories, such as taking a Thai cooking class on a cold Chicago night and learning how to make classic cocktails (鸡尾酒) in a common bar. These experiences are my best memories from the past 10 years. We always have such a great time when we’re trying something new together. It seems to have strengthened our relationship, and makes me feel like we have a closer connection.
It turns out that my theory is backed by research. One study shows that learning new things with your spouse (配偶), friends, or partners, can strengthen your connection or friendship. But how exactly does this work? The key is vulnerability (弱点). “Learning new things together strengthens bonds because it is at those moments that we can show our vulnerability to one another,” says Dr. Hisla Bates. When we are learning a new task, misfortunes and failures are bound to happen. In those moments when we fail, the other party can be there in favor of us. We can work together to find a solution, and working together helps deepen the connection.
The benefits gained from learning new things with your partner can come from activities as small as hiking, trying a new recipe, going boating in the local lake or taking a fitness class together. You don’t have to go bungee jumping or skydiving to grow closer. Try selecting activities that both partners are unfamiliar with, as this will ensure you’re on the same page.
Trying to learn something new together once a month will benefit you and your spouse or friends. Overall, some of my best memories with my husband are the moments when we are learning something new together.
12.What were the author and her husband doing in Paragraph 1?
A.Playing sports. B.Practising dancing.
C.Teaching lessons. D.Taking a walk.
13.What can we learn from the author’s experiences?
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Good memories last a long time.
C.Processes matter more than results.
D.Well begun is half done.
14.Why does learning new things together strengthen partners’ relationship?
A.It can encourage them to teach and praise each other.
B.It helps improve the understanding of each other.
C.It can reduce each other’s loneliness and boredom.
D.It helps find each other’s weaknesses and offer support.
15.What’s the best title for the text?

All of us want to strive for perfection, don’t we? It could be submitting the perfect assignment or performing a flawless musical. 16 This is especially so when we are in a large organization, like a school or company.
When people work as a team, the end product is more likely to be of better quality than if an individual produces it alone. There is a name for this-synergy (增效) . Now, how does synergy work?
17 Actually, synergy is abundant in the animal kingdom. Remember the clownfish darting (飞奔) among the sea anemones (海葵) in Finding Nemo? Both creatures demonstrate mutualism at play. The clownfish hide among the stinging tentacles (触角) of the anemones when their predators come close. In return, the clownfish scare off the butterfly fish that prey on anemones.
18 From them, we learn that a team that works well together understands the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. Not only that, the teamleaders and members become proficient when they exercise specialization. 19
In teamwork, there is much creativity. 20 While the occasional conflict may arise when certain members don’t see eye to eye over an issue, these are few and far between. The team leader will be at hand to ease tensions when things go wrong.
A.Let’s turn to nature for inspiration.
B.Let’s not wave away the chance to work in teams.
C.Each member will contribute his expertise to benefit the team.
D.However, this ideal circumstance is not always accomplished alone.
E.The clownfish and sea anemone make a clever team in surviving the wild.
F.Team members also offer unique perspectives before reaching an agreement.
G.The clownfish and sea anemone make the ocean bed beautiful, don’t you agree?

(2022·浙江·高考真题)Pasta and pizza were on everyone’s lunch menu in my native land of Italy. Everyone who had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian. A few years later, as I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn, I realized things were no longer that simple. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. The food choices were almost as diverse as the students. In front of me was an array of foods I couldn’t even name in my native language. Fearing that I would pick out something awful, I desperately tried to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation. Unfortunately, between us stood the barrier of language.
Although my kindergarten experience feels like a century ago, the lessons I learned will stick in my mind forever. For the past three summers, I have worked in a government agency in New York. New immigrants much like the little girl in the lunch line flooded our office seeking help. I often had to be an interpreter for the Italian-speaking ones. As I served the role of vital communication link, I was reminded of my desperate struggle to converse before I learned English. I watched with great sympathy as elderly Italians tried to hold a conversation in Italian with people who did not speak the language. It suddenly became very clear to me how lucky I was to be fluent in two languages.
In New York, a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance to work with a diverse population. In my English to Italian translations, I’ve learned about social programs that I didn’t know existed. This work expanded my mind in ways that are impossible inside the four walls of a classroom. Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today, I am no longer confused by this city’s sounds and smells. Instead, enjoy its diversity.
4.What did the author realize after entering school in Brooklyn?
A.Time passed quickly. B.English was hard to learn.
C.The food was terrible. D.People were very different.
5.Who does “the little girl” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.An Italian teacher. B.A government official.
C.The author herself. D.The author’s classmate.
6.How did the summer job benefit the author?
A.It strengthened her love for school. B.It helped sharpen her sense of direction.
C.It opened her eyes to the real world. D.It made her childhood dream come true.

(2022·全国乙卷)Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. Here are five ways to sustain (保持) long-distance friendships.
·Set a regular date
Long-lasting friendships share the characteristic that both sides equally contact (联系) and share with one another. With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge. 7 .
·More isn’t always merrier
Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both. 8 . There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.
·Practise empathy (共情)
9 . The friend who is remaining needs to be sensitive to all the additional time demands placed on the friend who has moved. The one in the new environment should be sympathetic to the fact that your friend may feel abandoned.
· 10
Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships. Although technology might make day-to-day communication possible, extra effort goes a long way on special days. Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you.
·Don’t rely on technology alone
11 , but long-distance friendships — even close ones — may require more conscious effort to sustain. Try to seek out chances to renew friendships. How to do it? Just spend face-to-face time together whenever possible.
A.Remember important dates
B.Compensate by writing letters

“Dear Jenny, I am really sorry to tell you that you didn’t get the position this time. The interviewers had a discussion about you. You have a very good experience, but you are not qualified for this position. The journalist we want is to communicate with people from walks of life, so you should be more sociable and more energetic. So, sorry.” Actually, such was not quite new to Jenny and this was the third time that she had been rejected for a job position after her graduation from university as a top student.
Overwhelmed (淹没) with sadness, she lifted her hands to cover her face. Her heart was broken with self-doubt whether she was never good enough to fit in with the highly competitive adult world. It seemed that the excellence she displayed at school was nothing but illusion. “Maybe I should quit applying for that demanding job,” Jenny whispered to herself.
Sensing something wrong, Jenny’s father, James, said to his daughter, “Congratulations on your graduation, and time to enjoy your youth. In celebration of your new life, I’d like to give you something special. Here is a car that I acquired many years ago. But before I give it to you, take it to the used car lot downtown and tell them you want to sell it and see how much they offer you.”
Unwilling as Jenny was, she went to the used car lot and they offered her only one thousand dollars because the car looked very worn out. With that offer, she returned back to her father and out of her expectation, this time her father told her to take this car to a pawnshop (当铺). Confused, Jenny went to the pawnshop where they should have offered her ten thousand dollars as her father’s car looked a little bit old to them. “Maybe it is a perfect deal!” thought Jenny. But then, the father advised his daughter to keep trying and go to a car club and show them the car. The daughter took the car to the club, and then, breathtakingly, something magic happened.

People there willingly offered one hundred thousand dollars for the same car.

The New York Times Oct 19, 2023】

C.Animal lovers. D.School teachers.

根据Animal shelter volunteering部分中“Usually, as long as the child has signed permission from their parents or guardian, they can volunteer as young as 14, even younger if their parents bring them and supervise their volunteer time.(通常,只要孩子得到父母或监护人的同意,他们就可以在14岁时做志愿者,如果父母带他们来并监督他们的志愿者时间,他们甚至可以更小。)”
根据Youth sports部分中“Most youth sports need teenage volunteers to be an assistant coach or a referee. (大多数青少年运动都需要青少年志愿者担任助理教练或裁判。)”可知,青少年在体育活动中可以担任助理教练或裁判。因此,他们可以给裁判员提供帮助。故选B。

(2024·湖南长沙·模拟预测)Ms.

(2024·河南郑州·三模)My husband made a little two-story house that mirrored our own in color and design for our Little Free Library, while I carefully selected books from our shelves.

(2024·辽宁·模拟预测)“Quick, quick, slow, slow,” my husband said as I was trying to focus.
A.The power of learning new things together
B.The advantages of taking different lessons
C.The challenge of acquiring new knowledge
D.The importance of improving people’s bonds

These experiences are my best memories from the past 10 years.(这些教训没有得到回报并不重要。
根据第三段第三句到最后一句“But how exactly does this work? The key is vulnerability (弱点). “Learning new things together strengthens bonds because it is at those moments that we can show our vulnerability to one another,” says Dr. Hisla Bates. When we are learning a new task, misfortunes and failures are bound to happen. In those moments when we fail, the other party can be there in favor of us. We can work together to find a solution, and working together helps deepen the connection.(但这究竟是如何起作用的呢?
根据第二段“It didn’t matter that the lessons didn’t pay off. It seems to have strengthened our relationship, and makes me feel like we have a closer connection.(这些教训没有得到回报并不重要。我们一起学习新的东西给我们带来了一系列美好的回忆,比如在芝加哥寒冷的夜晚上泰国烹饪课,在一家普通酒吧学习如何制作经典鸡尾酒。这些经历是我过去10年最美好的回忆。我们一起尝试新事物的时候总是很开心。这似乎加强了我们的关系,让我觉得我们有了更紧密的联系。)”和最后一段“Trying to learn something new together once a month will benefit you and your spouse or friends. Overall, some of my best memories with my husband are the moments when we are learning something new together.(每个月一起尝试学习一些新东西对你和你的配偶或朋友都有好处。总的来说,我和我丈夫最美好的回忆就是我们一起学习新东西的时刻。)”可知,作者主要是想阐明一起尝试学习一些新东西有利于加深亲密关系。故选A。

(2024·湖北襄阳·三模)All of us want to strive for perfection, don’t we?

根据第一段第三四句“A few years later, as I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn, I realized things were no longer that simple. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. (几年后,当我站在布鲁克林一所幼儿园的午餐队伍里时,我意识到事情不再那么简单了。我的同学中有皮肤白皙、蓝眼睛大的,也有棕色皮肤、深色头发的)”可知,当作者去了在Brooklyn的一所学校之后,发现学校里的人不一样。故选D。
5.推理判断题。根据第二段第二三句“For the past three summers, I have worked in a government agency in New York. New immigrants much like the little girl in the lunch line flooded our office seeking help. (过去的三个夏天,我一直在纽约的一家政府机构工作。新移民涌入我们的办公室寻求帮助,就像排队吃午餐的小女孩一样)”以及第一段第三句“A few years later, as I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn, I realized things were no longer that simple. (几年后,当我站在布鲁克林一所幼儿园的午餐队伍里时,我意识到事情不再那么简单了)”可知,当年的小女孩长大了,在纽约的一家政府机构工作,工作环境让她想到当年自己在幼儿园的午餐队伍排队的情境。故选C。
6.推理判断题。根据最后一段第三四五句“This work expanded my mind in ways that are impossible inside the four walls of a classroom. Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today, I am no longer confused by this city’s sounds and smells. Instead, enjoy its diversity. (这项工作拓展了我的思维,这是在四面墙的教室里不可能做到的。今天走在布鲁克林的街道上,我不再对这座城市的声音和气味感到困惑。 相反,我会享受它的多样性)”可知,作者三个夏天的工作拓展了思维,开始接受真实世界的多样性。故选C。

C.It is also helpful for you to be a friendship keeper
D.Try to find a time that works for both of you and stick to it
E.Friends need to talk about their preferred methods of communication
F.It is easy to have a sense of connectedness through social media
G.You may be the friend who left or the one who was left behind
【答案速查】7.D 8.E 9.G 10.A 11.F
8.根据上文“Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both.”(确保你已经和你的朋友沟通过,了解你们想要联系的频率,以及哪种方法对你们双方都最有效)提到异地朋友之间要商量沟通方式,E项“朋友需要谈论他们喜欢的交流方式”承接上文,进一步提出对交流的方法的沟通,下文“There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.”(除了持续的文字交流,还有其他选择,比如留下语音信息或进行群聊)对E项中的“methods of communication”进行了举例说明,上下文语意连贯。故选E项。
9.根据下文“The friend who is remaining”(留下来的朋友)和“The one in the new environment”(在新环境中的那个)提到朋友的两个不同处境,G项“你可能是朋友中离开的那一方,也可能是被留下的那一方”指出了异地友谊中分为离开的一方和留下的一方,其中“the friend who left”和“the one who was left behind”分别对应下文“The one in the new environment”和“The friend who is remaining”,所以G项符合题意。故选G项。
故选A项。

Shocked, Jenny couldn’t believe what was happening in front of her. Ideas and questions came to mind, so she asked herself, “How could the prices be so different at different places? Are these guys out of mind to buy such a worn-out car?” Without any clues, she dashed back to her father and couldn’t wait to make out the truth. So she told James what had happened in the car club.
Wearing a satisfied smile, James said, “They identified it as an expensive car.” In fact, never had people in the used car lot and the pawnshop recognized the value under the broken cover. Patting gently on Jenny’s shoulder, James said, “I want you to know that you are not worth anything if you are not in a right place. Don’t stay where your value goes unnoticed.” With moved tears in her eyes, Jenny understood she should know her worth and surround herself with those who could recognize it and that the true value would shine only when she was in the right environment. She knew clearly what to do next.
①购买:buy/purchase
②冲,奔:dash/run/rush
③弄清楚:make out/figure out/work out
④意识到:recognize/realize

[高分句型2] In fact, never had people in the used car lot and the pawnshop recognized the value under the broken cover.
[高分句型3] I want you to know that you are not worth anything if you are not in a right place.
