阅读理解 (2024·郑州高二检测)Jill Wheatley was a PE teacher in Germany. On the weekends she competed in marathons around Europe. But life threw her a near deadly blow. While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great that it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye.She spent 26 months in seven different hospitals,at times wishing it would just all end. Desperately,Wheatley set out to find comfort and healing in nature. She travelled to Nepal where a friend convinced her to run in the Annapurna 100 with him.The power from that race changed her life and eventually had her looking up at the tops of the mountains.Project Vision 8,000 was born. And she began her mission to stand on top of the world's 14 highest mountains, towering 8,000 metres above sea level,to show herself and others the power in choice and possibility. Colours, and touch help guide her on the mountain and she has never once felt too tired to carry on.“The only thing constant is change,so when the weather gets really bad or a storm is coming in,I know it is going to pass.”So far, she's had few problems standing among giants, but she admits she continues to struggle with overcoming:the “mountains of her mind”.Having already stared death in the face,Wheatley has great respect for the mountains and the mission she is on.But she's not scared. The experience almost claimed her life, but it is now the driving force and fuel behind her success. At every icy peak, she smiles and takes a quick video with a breathless “so very thankful” whispered into the thin air. 1.What happened to Wheatley according to Paragraph 1? A.She came last in a race. B.She suffered head injury. C.She lost her sight completely. D.She was attacked in a class. 2.What drove Wheatley to launch Project Vision 8,000? A.Her exploration of nature. B.Her friend's timely suggestions. C.Her strong love for sports. D.Her participation in the Annapurna 100. 3.What can we learn about Wheatley from the last paragraph? A.Her attitude toward adversity was reshaped. B.She was used to poor weather conditions. C.She ignored the mountains of her mind. D.Her nature helped her overcome fear. 4.What could be the best title for the text? A.Every Peak Is within Reach B.Lose Sight to Gain Vision C.Action Speaks Louder than Words D.Nature Will Work Its Course 【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。 由第一段中的“ While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great that it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye.(在教体育课时,她被棒球击中了头部。撞击非常严重,导致她脑部受伤,视力下降70%,一只眼睛永久性失明。)”可知,Jill Wheatley头部受伤了。故选B。 2.D [解析]推理判断题。由第二段中的“ The power from that race changed her life and eventually had her looking up at the tops of the mountains.Project Vision 8,000 was born.” 故选A。 Dr.Esther Ngumbi, now a professor of Entomology(昆虫学) at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign, was born in a rural farming community along the Kenyan Coast.1. There were no societal role models to inspire girls to reach for the stars.Luckily, her parents were teachers and struggled to raise enough money to pay for their children's school fees. Her parents would go to town to get their pay checks, but eat nothing before coming back in the evening, hungry and tired. She knew that they were able to buy food in town, but they chose not to spend money on themselves so that Esther and her brothers and sisters could go to school. 2. It inspired her to pursue her academic career goals and fight against challenges however tough they seemed. 3. She went through high school and eventually college and attained a Bachelor and Master of Science at Kenyatta University. On a beautiful summer day of August 6,2011,she attained what at times seemed to be an unrealistic dream:a PhD in Entomology from Auburn University.4. She cried on her graduation day as she thought of her community in Kenya and many girls in her community.5. It was during that day that she told herself she would do everything she needed to do,and give the girls more opportunities to break down the poverty barrier,be educated, and achieve great things. She has devoted all of her passion, efforts, heart and resources to bringing sustainable change in her community and she has become a role model for girls in her community. A.This had a powerful effect on her. B.Education for girls was considered unimportant there. C.Once she started to do experiments in the lab,she was devoted to them. D.She became the first woman in her community to obtain a PhD degree. E.She was a real leader for many young African girls in similar situations. F.They had the potential to be a scientist too,but just lacked the opportunity. G.She studied hard and gained a lot, hoping she'd help her family and community. 1.B [解析]根据空后“There were no societal role models to inspire girls to reach for the stars.(没有任何社会榜样可以激励女孩去实现宏大目标。)” 2.A [解析]根据空前内容“She knew that they were able to buy food in town, but they chose not to spend money on themselves so that Esther and her brothers and sisters could go to school.(她知道他们有能力在城里买食物,但他们选择不把钱花在自己身上,这样Esther和她的兄弟姐妹就可以上学了。)”及空后“It inspired her to pursue her academic career goals and fight against challenges however tough they seemed.(它激励她追求自己的学术生涯目标,并与看似艰难的挑战作斗争。)” 故选A。 3.G [解析]空后“She went through high school and eventually college and attained a Bachelor and Master of Science at Kenyatta University.” 4.D [解析]根据空前“On a beautiful summer day of August 6,2011,she attained what at times seemed to be an unrealistic dream:a PhD in Entomology from Auburn University.” 5.F [解析]空前“She cried on her graduation day as she thought of her community in Kenya and many girls in her community.” 符合语境,F项中的They指代上文的many girls,故选F。 Ⅲ. Mother's Day falls on May 12th this year. [参考范文] Mother's Day falls on May 12th this year.I made a gift for my mother. As my mother likes reading,I made a bookshelf for her. Several days ago I bought the wood on the Internet. Then I made the bookshelf all by myself. At first,I read the instructions. Then, following the instructions,I pieced together different pieces of wood and nailed the wood.Eventually, the bookshelf was assembled.Afterwards I painted the bookshelf purple, which is my mother's favorite color.Looking at the bookshelf,I was filled with happiness. When my mother received the gift, she hugged me,tears rolling down her face. Ⅳ. There is no school equal to a decent(体面的) home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent. There are two typical examples:Edison's mother and our mother. As you all know,Thomas Edison is one of the most outstanding scientists and inventors in the world.Unbelievably, young Tom was in school for only three months. It is said that he liked to ask strange questions, many of which have nothing to do with learning. His teacher didn't understand why he had so many strange questions. He didn't want to teach Tom any more.He asked Tom's mother to take the boy home.Tom's mother taught him to read and write, and she found him to be a very good pupil. He learned very fast and became very interested in science. It was she who played an important role in Edison's growth.Although we can't compare with Edison, our mother played a more important role in our growth than his mother. Our dad was an English teacher who taught high school students. For many years,he had been cautious and conscientious(认真的) towards work.Mom stayed home and homeschooled their four children.Three of us had no trouble in learning but my sister Catherine still could not read by fifth grade, and worse still, did not even know the alphabet(字母表). My mother did some research and found that Catherine had some sort of learning disability. She sent Catherine to a public school to get some help.Catherine made many friends at school and amazed everyone with her gift for telling creative stories in class, but she still couldn't master reading skills. After all the testing was done, the school had my parents come in.They were told that based on the test results, they should just take Catherine home, which was very similar to Edison's experience. However, the biggest difference is that Edison was not stupid, and my sister really had learning disabilities. Paragraph 1: Tears of sadness ran down my dad's cheeks. Paragraph 2: In time,Catherine got it. [参考范文] Paragraph 1: Tears of sadness ran down my dad's cheeks. However,my mom's jaw was set in quiet determination. As they walked back to the car,she turned to him and said,“I know she's not stupid.”Soon after,my mom discovered a learning system that focused heavily on lesson repetition and building slowly on the previous exercises. She worked with Catherine for four hours every morning while the rest of us studied on our own.It was hard for both of them, but she often told crying Catherine,“Failure is not an option. You are going to learn to read, and we'll both try! You have to learn to read! You will learn to read.” Paragraph 2: In time,Catherine got it. By the time she graduated from eighth grade, she was reading almost at grade level. She continued improving and was reading above grade level when she graduated from high school.Catherine came to love reading and writing. She became a very famous writer.A number of wonderful novels were published all over the country. Many of her major works were popular with the public and some books were translated into other languages. All of this was because of a wonderfully devoted mother who was absolutely the best teacher ever—for all four of us.
