If you feel sad or upset, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be more suitable for you.
Some scientists at Ohio State University, the U.S., found that sad movies can make people happier. They presented their study in a magazine called Communication Research.
Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were apart. They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness (悲伤).
According to the result of the report, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives and relationships. Compared to those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.
“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad moods (情绪) would make people more thoughtful. “Good moods are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But bad emotions, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Therefore, seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad, but that will cause you to think more about your own close relationships and value (珍视) them more.”

That night, my piano performance was the most important thing in my family. To see my performance, my grandparents would come by plane. My aunt Dianne, a successful news reporter, would come as well, though she was quite busy with her TV news every night.
Unluckily, I got very nervous before I performed. What was worse, the more I practiced, the more nervous I was. It seemed very difficult for me to win any prize. When it was my turn, I sat down at the piano in my beautiful dress and started to play. To my disappointment (失望), I made a mistake and then another. It seemed that it took me years to finish my performance. I ran off the stage with tears in my eyes. I felt surprised when I saw people stand up and cheer for me. My mom and dad had flowers for me and they all said congratulations to me. But what I wanted to do was to go back home and cry. When we were back home, I locked myself in my bedroom. I couldn’t believe how I could make such silly mistakes after so many years of hard work. Then I heard someone knocking at the door. It was my aunt. She came in and sat by me.

【答案】例文
How to get on well with parents
In the past, I had difficulty in getting on well with my parents. I used to argue with my parents too. I remember once I had a big fight because I didn’t want to take the after-school class my parents had signed me up for. But after I calmed down, I knew that my parents were doing this for my own good. So I took the initiative to admit my mistake to my parents. And I explained to them why I didn’t want to go. I also promised that I would use practical actions to prove that I do not need to go to after-school classes. After my parents listened, they forgave and understood me. Of course, I finally proved with practice that I can also improve my grades without going to tutoring classes. Through this incident, I understand that communication and understanding of parents is the best way to get along.

The teacher said nothing but went to the bathroom and got a tube of toothpaste. She held the tube high in the air so that every student could see it. Then she squeezed it just a bit so some toothpaste could come out. After that, she tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube, but it just made a mess. She squeezed the tube even more, pushing out more toothpaste and making even more of a mess. But none of it could go back into the tube.

26. The scientists asked the college students to watch Atonement .
A. to know how their feelings change after watching it
B. to make them feel better about themselves
C. to encourage them to share their feelings
D. to make them live a happy life
27. How many times did the students answer questions from the scientists?
A. Three times.
B. Four times.
C. Five times.
D. Six times.
28. Which is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
29. What does Silvia think of bad moods?
A. Meaningless. B. Useful. C. Proper. D. Boring.
30. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Feeling Down? Think about Others.
B. Feeling Bad? See a Happy Film.
C. Feeling Sad? Watch a Sad Movie.
D. Feeling upset? Go to the Cinema.

My name is Lisa, a well-known pianist. My first performance was still clear in my mind, though it happened so long ago.
“I still remember my first show on TV,” she said. “I had practiced a thousand times, but I forgot to mention the name of the news and you may not believe I even pronounced (发音) my own name wrongly. Don’t be too hard on yourself. No one can avoid (避免) making mistakes. The key is to face it bravely and learn from it. It can make us better.” I think she is right.
