“There is so much talent right on this street,” Kara said to her mother. “I wish everyone could see and hear all the great things.”
“Have you ever thought about setting up a talent show?” her mother said. “So all the kids can show what they can do.”
“A great idea, Mom,” Kara said. Soon Kara started to prepare for the talent show. To attract as many people as possible, Kara made some beautiful posters and put them up all around her neighborhood. Soon, everyone was talking about what they were going to do in the show.
Kara was pleased that everyone wanted to be in her talent show. But she couldn’t help feeling a little sad. “I wish I had a talent so I could be in the show, too,” she told her mother.
Her mother smiled. “I think you will discover something about yourself by the end of the day.” she said.
Kara went to the park a little early and set up a small stage for the performers. Everyone brought chairs to sit on the cool grass. Soon Kara’s friends began to perform one by one. The audience cheered loudly after each act. When it was over, everyone told Kara how wonderful her talent show was.

If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.
Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves. clearly. If you’re self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.
Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence. The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn’t mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.
How do you lean to be self-aware? It’s a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with “What” instead of “Why”. So if you don’t understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you’re arguing.
Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don’t be afraid to dislike something—discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.
28.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.What self-awareness is. B.What true happiness is.
C.How to find true happiness. D.How to develop self-awareness.
29.Why is knowing yourself important?
A.Because it will make you think more of yourself.
B.Because it will make you perform better at school.
C.Because it will help you learn how to ask proper questions.
D.Because it will help you have a better understanding of others.
30.What’s one of the keys to becoming more self-aware?
A.Being in high spirits. B.Discovering your weak points.
C.Having a taste for pleasant music. D.Learning to get along well with others.
31.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.It can be hard for you to know yourself well from others.
B.It takes a lot of time and energy to develop close friendships.
C.It is important and necessary for you to make a right decision.
D.It is a must to stick to your opinions when arguing with others.
D
Are you good at remembering what you’ve learned at school? Is it an easy process for all people? No one’s memory is perfect. Even the smartest people forget things. This does not mean a person has a bad memory. It means he is not using his mind to his advantages.
The brain has short-term memory and long-term memory. When we learn something new, it stays in our memory for around 20-30 seconds. This is our short-term memory. It can hold a small amount of information. If we repeat it and use it often, this information can move from short-term memory to long-term memory, which is the place where memories are stored for a long time.
The skill for remembering is moving information from short-term to long-term memory. No one knows exactly how this happens. But one thing is for sure—practising, or making repetition of information, is one of the most popular methods of remembering. And scientists say that long-term memory will never fill up completely with memories in one’s lifetime.
Then why do we forget things? Forgetting things that are not important helps our brain to remember things that are important. Our brain is always “cleaning out” useless information to make room for something more useful.
If you are interested in improving your memory, there are lots of simple things you can do, like eating healthily, sleeping well and exercising daily. Besides, it’s also important to challenge your brain. You can play mind games, learn a musical instrument or study a new language. All you need to do is to keep your brain healthy and active.
32.How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By listing numbers. B.By comparing facts.
C.By asking questions. D.By giving examples.
33.What is one of the most popular ways to remember information according to the passage?
A.Listening or writing. B.Practising or asking.
C.Listening or speaking. D.Practising or repeating.
34.The last paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A.the ways to eat healthily B.the ways to improve our memory
C.the reasons for playing mind games D.the reasons for studying a new language
35.Where does the text most probably come from?

A.What self-awareness is. B.What true happiness is.

30.What’s one of the keys to becoming more self-aware?
A.Being in high spirits. B.Discovering your weak points.
C.Having a taste for pleasant music. D.Learning to get along well with others.

A.Listening or writing. B.Practising or asking.
C.Listening or speaking. D.Practising or repeating.
34.The last paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A.the ways to eat healthily B.the ways to improve our memory
C.the reasons for playing mind games D.the reasons for studying a new language
35.Where does the text most probably come from?

【参考范文】
Dear Tom,
How are you doing? Learning that you are about to pay a visit to a Chinese friend and wondering about the Chinese customs, I am writing to put forward some advice.
Firstly, try to arrive 5 to 6 minutes earlier, which is common in Chinese traditional culture. Secondly, bringing some appropriate gifts for the host is a kind action. Things like small gifts from your home country can serve as nice gifts. Besides, understanding table manners is also important. When dining with a Chinese family, remember to wait for the elderly to start the dinner first. Try not to make any noise when eating. Also, please avoid sticking your chopsticks into your food, and instead, lay them on your dish.
If you have any other problems, please feel free to contact me.
Yours,
Li Hua
