For the past five years, Paula Smith, a historian of science, has devoted herself to re-creating long-forgotten techniques. While doing research for her new book, she came across a 16th-century French manuscript(手稿)consisting of nearly 1,000 sets of instructions, covering subjects from tool making to finding the best sand.
The author's intention remains as mysterious(神秘)as his name; he may have been simply taking notes for his own records. But Smith was struck mainly by the fact that she didn't truly grasp any of the skills the author described. "You simply can't get an understanding of that handwork by reading about it," she says.
Though Smith did get her hands on the best sand, doing things the old-fashioned way isn't just about playing around with French mud. Reconstructing the work of the craftsmen(工匠)who lived centuries ago can reveal how they viewed the world, what objects filled their homes, and what went on in the workshops that produced them. It can even help solve present-day problems: In 2015, scientists discovered that a 10th-century English medicine for eve problems could kill a drug-resistant virus.
The work has also brought insights for museums, Smith says. One must know how an object was made in order to preserve it. What's more, reconstructions might be the only way to know what treasures looked like before time wore them down. Scholars have seen this idea in practice with ancient Greek and Roman statues. These sculptures were painted a rainbow of striking colours. We can't appreciate these kinds of details without seeing works of art as they originally appeared-something Smith believes you can do only when you have a road map.
Smith has put the manuscript's ideas into practice. Her final goal is to link the worlds of art and science back together: She believes that bringing the old recipes to life can help develop a kind of learning that highlights experimentation, teamwork, and problem solving.
Back when science—then called “the new philosophy”—took shape, academics looked to craftsmen for help in understanding the natural world. Microscopes and telescopes were invented by way of artistic tinkering(修补), as craftsmen experimented with glass to better bend light.
If we can rediscover the values of hands-on experience and craftwork, Smith says, we can marry the best of our modern insights with the handiness of our ancestors.
4. How did Smith, feel after reading the French manuscript?
A. Confused about the technical terms.
B. Impressed with its detailed instructions.
C. Discouraged by its complex structure.
D. Shocked for her own lack of hand skills.
5. According to Smith, the reconstruction work is done mainly to _____________.
A. restore old workshops B. understand the craftsmen
C. improve visual effects D. inspire the philosophers
6. Why does the author mention museums?
A. To reveal the beauty of ancient objects.
B. To present the findings of old science.
C. To highlight the importance of antiques.
D. To emphasise the values of hand skills.
7. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Craftsmen Set the Trends for Artists
B. Craftsmanship Leads to New Theories
C. Craftsmanship Makes Better Scientists
D. Craftsmen Reshape the Future of Science

The impacts of climate change on people’s health around the world, including deaths due to heatwaves and the consequences of food insecurity, are at their “most worrying” since an international initiative began tracking them five years ago.
All 16 indicators of the health impacts of a warming world are worsening, The Lancet Countdown report published recently shows. “Climate change-induced shocks are claiming lives, damaging health and disrupting (扰乱) livelihoods in all parts of the world right now. That means no continent or community remains untouched,” says Ian Hamilton at University College London.
The report found that between 2000 and 2018, the number of heat-related deaths each year in people aged over 65 jumped by almost 54 percent to 296,000 globally. Most were in Japan, China, India, and Europe. More than half of 196 countries saw an increase in the risk of people exposed to wildfires between 2016-2019, compared to 2001-2004. Based on area rather than population, Australia saw one of the biggest increases in wildfire risk between the same periods.
Hamilton, the director of The Lancet Countdown initiative, urged governments to make sure the carbon-cutting plans they submit to the United Nations ahead of the COP26 climate summit (峰会) next year — known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) — are not just ambitious, but factor in health. “At the moment, health is not featuring among the NDCs in the way that it needs to,” he says, highlighting the urgent need for immediate action to reduce the destructive health impacts of climate change. Failure to take action now will lead to even more severe consequences for people’s health and well-being in the future.
8. What can be inferred from Hamilton’s words in paragraph 2?
A. People’s livelihoods need improvement.
B. It’s time to take personal health seriously.
C. People on Earth are all victims of climate change.
D. Climate change is the leading cause of food insecurity.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The destruction of natural disasters.
B. The reasons for worsening global warming.
C. The urgency of reducing heat-related deaths.
D. The effects of climate change on human health.
10. What does Hamilton expect governments to do?
A Include health problems in NDCs.
B. Play their parts in reducing carbon.
C. Educate the public about health issues.
D. Raise citizens’ environmental awareness.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A news report. B. A research plan.
C. A travel brochure. D. A biology textbook.
D
Is social media really making young people antisocial (孤僻的)? A surprising new study finds that children and young adults who use these platforms the most are actually more active in the real world than others! The new findings come from a long-term project called the Trondheim Early Secure Study. Researchers collected information from about 800 children and young adults when they were 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old. This included interviews about each child’s use of social media from year to year. The goal was to determine if using social media affects a young person’s overall social skills.
To the team’s surprise, participants frequently using these platforms did not see their social skills reduced. “On the contrary, we find that people who use social media a lot spend more time with friends offline than those who tend to limit their screen time,” says Professor Silje Steinsbekk from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s Department of Psychology.
However, social media can present challenges for children and teens. Although it offers a convenient and comfortable way for those with social anxiety to communicate, it can also lead to addiction and misuse. Studies have suggested that young people with anxiety are more easily affected by the negative effects of social media, which can worsen their symptoms and harm their mental health. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to monitor their children’s online activity and usage.
Despite the risks to some, the team says their findings debunk the belief that social media causes young people to become socially isolated. In fact, their frequent use of social platforms may actually give them more opportunities to connect with old and new friends and set up chances to go out and socialize outdoors.
12. What does the study focus on?
A. The importance of young people’s social skills.
B. The impact of social media on young people.
C. Reasons for people becoming isolated from the community.
D. Ways to prevent children from becoming addicted to social media.
13. Who may probably be more active in the real world according to the study?
A. A teenager who uses social media frequently.
B. A boy who never makes friends online.
C. A girl who seldom surfs the Internet.
D. A new parent who is experiencing social anxiety.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Negative emotions cause teens to misuse social media.
B. Kids are more easily influenced by social media than adults.
C. Online communication can help improve people’s mental health.
D. Social media is a double-edged sword for young people with anxiety.
15. What does the underlined word “debunk” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A Explain. B. Ignore.
C. Confirm. D. Contradict.

“Oh, no!” Jack shouted while looking at the likes and comments on his recent TikTok video.
“Why aren’t people reacting to my content as they used to?”
Jack was a 19-year-old strong and muscular man addicted to the gym. He loved recording exercise videos and posting them on his TikTok account. Initially, his video logs (vlogs) were popular, but his posts’ reach soon decreased.
Jack wondered why people had stopped sharing and liking his videos, “Maybe my audience is tired of watching me work out in the gym,” he thought, determined to change the location of his videos.
The following day, Jack went to the neighborhood park and began filming while walking on the track.“Hi, guys! How about we shake things up a little? I’m to work out in the park today!” he said excitedly, looking into the camera lens (镜头).
“Let’s look for a good spot to warm up,” he said as he walked towards a bench(长椅), on which sat an elderly lady. Jack thought the bench was the perfect place to film his video because of the light.
He put his tripod stand (三脚架) on the bench and set the camera, but he felt like he needed the full bench. He wanted to place his camera where the lady sat, so he gestured to her to move, but the woman didn’t seem to understand.
“Get out of my way!” he yelled.“Can’t you see I’m filming a video? You old fool!” Looking him up and down in surprise, the old lady didn’t argue over his disrespectful attitude and quietly walked towards another bench.
Jack set his camera up, pressed the record button and waved at his followers, ready to demonstrate exercises. Suddenly, he tripped on a loose stone, lost balance and fell down, his head striking the bench and bleeding heavily.
Crying in pain, Jack tried to get up, but he didn’t have the strength to rise. He collapsed on the ground, screaming desperately for help.

A. Include health problems in NDCs.
B. Play their parts in reducing carbon.
C. Educate the public about health issues.
D. Raise citizens’ environmental awareness.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A news report. B. A research plan.
C. A travel brochure. D. A biology textbook.

A. Explain. B. Ignore.
C. Confirm. D. Contradict.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. D

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“However, social media can present challenges for children and teens. Although it offers a convenient and comfortable way for those with social anxiety to communicate, it can also lead to addiction and misuse. Studies have suggested that young people with anxiety are more easily affected by the negative effects of social media, which can worsen their symptoms and harm their mental health. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to monitor their children’s online activity and usage.”(然而,社交媒体给儿童和青少年带来了挑战。
根据最后一段“that social media causes young people to become socially isolated”(社交媒体导致年轻人社交孤立)和“In fact, their frequent use of social platforms may actually give them more opportunities to connect with old and new friends and set up chances to go out and socialize outdoors.”(事实上,他们频繁使用社交平台可能会让他们有更多机会与新老朋友联系,并有机会出去参加户外社交活动。)可知,团队的说法与普遍认为社交媒体使年轻人变得孤立的观点相反,因此debunk一词最有可能的意思是“反驳”。A. Explain解释;B. Ignore忽略;C. Confirm确认;D. Contradict反驳。故选D。

【答案】Hi John,
I’m glad you found the comic “Yu Gong Removes the Mountains” interesting! Let me share the story and its moral with you.
An old man named Yu Gong lived in a village surrounded by two huge mountains. Finding it difficult to travel, he decided to remove them. Despite his age and the demanding task, he and his family carried out their plan. When people laughed at him for his foolishness, he replied that while he might not finish, future generations would continue until they eventually succeeded. The gods, impressed by his determination, gave him a hand and the mountains were moved. This story shows that perseverance and determination work wonders. It’s a reminder that nothing is impossible as long as you carry on.
Hopefully, this story will be a wonderful bridge for you to explore Chinese culture and inspire you to unlock your potential.
Best regards,

【答案】One possible version
There was nobody around but the elderly lady. She hurried to him and bent down to check his injury. “God!” she gasped. “Don’t move. I’ll help you, son.” Looking at her kind face, Jack gradually lost consciousness. Having called an ambulance, the lady tended to his wounds carefully. Not until Jack came to and found himself and his belongings in an emergency room did he learn that the lady had contacted his family and quietly left. Overwhelmed by her virtue, Jack was desperate to find her. Fortunately, the rescue scene was wholly recorded by his camera. He posted the video online, requesting clues so that he could say thanks and sorry to her.
To Jack’s joy, a net friend sent a message saying where the lady lived. With gifts, Jack headed for the lady’s home. Answering the door, the lady was surprised but immediately got aware of what was going on. She gave Jack a hug, saying smilingly, “So glad to see you well, son.” “Sorry, I came for apologies. I behaved so rudely … and thanks for your help. Otherwise…” Jack choked, ashamed and grateful. “Treat others as you’d like to be treated. Everything will change for the better. I have faith in you,” she comforted the young man affectionately. The incident dramatically transformed Jack, who became helpful, friendly and popular.
