When 100-year-old Colin Thorne crossed the 5.5k m finish line at the 2024 Rotorua Marathon, he deserved the acclaim of supporters cheering him on. “My main goal of entering races is not so much for myself, but to encourage people to get off their backsides and go for a run or a walk,” explains the spirited centenarian (百岁老人).
Over the past 12 months, Colin has become somewhat of a New Zealand icon (偶像). He gained recognition after he decided to celebrate his 100th birthday by starting a “grand tour” of Parkruns around New Zealand, as well as completing the race for the60th anniversary (周年纪念日) of the Rotorua Marathon. “I’ve had an extremely good response,” he says. “People want to take photos and ask questions. Someone asked me, ‘Do I have my own teeth?!’ I get a lot of fun out of entering the events.”
Colin was born in 1924 and raised through the Depression. He believes the physicality of working on farms for many decades formed the foundation of his longevity and fitness. After more than 30 years playing and coaching hockey until in his sixties, Colin decided to try running instead. “I guess it became a bit of an addiction,” he reflects.
Despite describing himself as a person who works slowly after running his first marathon in Whangarei at 65, Colin went on to finish a further 49 more. He held an impressive personal best time of three hours and 18 minutes for the New Plymouth 42.2 k m Marathon—and ran his 50th and last marathon at 90 years old. Exercising six times a week, with three walks of up to 5 km around Whangarei, plus three sessions at his local gym, Colin is a phenomenon. He still lives independently, drives, cuts the grass in his garden and takes very little medicine.
Colin has no plans to slow down, with his future ambition to finish 200-plus Parkruns. He exclaims, “It has been an amazing journey and I’d like to do it all over again!”
4. What does the underlined word “acclaim” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Awards. B. Praises. C. Donations. D. Criticisms.
5. What is Colin Thorne’s main goal of participating in marathons?
A. To win the races. B. To improve his own health.
C. To compete with other runners. D. To encourage people to exercise.
6. Which can describe Colin Thorne?
A. Enthusiastic and energetic. B. Independent and cautious.
C. Productive and ambitious. D. Creative and friendly.
7. What is Colin’s future ambition?
A. To open a fitness center. B. To win more marathon races.
C. To complete over 200 Parkruns. D. To celebrate his 101st birthday.

The benefits of eating together are numerous. The Vanier Institute of the Family points out family meals can contribute to positive emotional well-being, pro-social behaviour and life satisfaction and literacy development and even reduce the risk of substance use.
“It allows kids to process their day, to think about what they’ve experienced, to ask questions, to check back to see if their feelings are normal, or if not, then why are they feeling this way? What do they need to know? How do they interpret a situation?” Spinks, University of Ottawa professor, said. “It also is an opportunity for parents to provide encouragement and strengthen their values and their traditions. It gives a chance for the kids to pause, and just be in the moment.”
For many parents, family dinners are a priority but work schedules and extracurricular (课外的) activities affect the ceremony. Erin Spooner, a mother of three, writes, “It is super important for us to be unplugged and talk about our days. If we have a commitment like sports, we will have a snack together when we get home. My boys ask both mom and dad how their day was and we ask them what was the best part of their day.”
Andrea Parker says it’s a daily habit for her family. “I feel it’s so important,” she said. “We found out a lot on my son’s life when I made him and his dad sit down at the table.” Spinks says it doesn’t matter if the meal is home-cooked or out of a box, or if the dinner happens at a food court or around the kitchen island; the value comes from the conversation and connection. “What it does is that it allows everybody to come together—even if it’s only for 10 or 15 minutes—but they come together. They are focused on each other.”
8. What benefits do family meals offer?
A. More independence. B. Better grades and less screen time.
C. Happier feelings and good behaviour. D. Healthier eating and more exercise.
9. How do family meals help kids understand their day?
A. By playing with toys. B. By reflecting on experiences.
C. By doing homework together. D. By watching educational shows.
10. Why is having regular family dinners hard for many people?
A. Because they dislike cooking. B. Because they have busy schedules.
C. Because they prefer restaurants. D. Because there isn’t enough table space.
11. What’s the topic of the passage?
A. The importance of family meals B. The appropriate table manners
C. The focus on families D. The tradition of family meals
D
Electronic waste, or e-waste, has reached levels that cannot be continued. More efforts are needed to take precious metals from abandoned laptops and smartphones. Research shows that over 57 million tons of e-waste was created worldwide in 2021 and people are frustrated about the lack of options to recycle their tech.
Building a low-carbon economy will depend on battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage. Taking the elements from used batteries will be an environmental necessity. Lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries also contain cobalt (钴) and copper (铜), but as mining for these metals creates poisonous pollution that can ruin the environment, so too can battery recycling if not done properly. It’s a problem that needs to be solved quickly.
Another strong pressure in mining e-waste for recycled materials is that supplies could stop entirely. Up to 30 different elements are used in smartphones, and six of them are predicted to run out in the next century.
“Developing a circular economy where minerals used in tech devices are saved and repurposed could help us to bypass supply chain issues in the future while also helping to reduce environmental impacts,” said RSC president Tom Welton. “It is essential that governments and businesses urgently do more to deal with the world’s growing e-waste crisis and ease the worry on supply chains.”
The US generates more than six million tons of e-waste each year and recycles only15 per cent. So there is a huge need to increase and regulate recycling instead of shipping waste abroad, where it is taken apart or made into pieces, releasing poison that can expose workers, including children, to diseases like cancer. Vast quantities are simply burned or buried in landfill to pollute the air, soil and water.
Electronic equipment is forecast to generate nearly 75 million metric tons of e-waste annually by 2030—almost double what was created in 2014. Less than 20per cent of global e-waste is currently recycled and that needs to change.
12. What’s the author’s attitude towards the future supplies of certain elements?
A. Concerned. B. Satisfied. C. Objective. D. Uncertain.
13. What does Tom Welton suggest?
A. Regulating local recycling. B. Boosting efforts to take metals.
C. Increasing global e-waste recycling. D. Developing a circular economy for tech minerals.
14. Why does the author mention the US e-waste in the fifth paragraph?
A. To show the focus on the problem from the government.
B. To make a further prediction about worsening problems.
C. To illustrate the seriousness of the problem.
D. To find a solution to the problem.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Mining’s environmental impact. B. Lack of recycling options for tech devices.
C. Need for a circular economy in tech devices. D. Growing e-waste crisis and supply chain effects.

On a wet evening in September 2013, my flight landed in London. I was 19 years old and came to Britain to study mechanical engineering at university. It was also the first time that I had left home since I grew up in Dubai.
I felt lonely, homesick, and the rainy day that greeted me at the airport was really unpleasant. I’d never traveled alone, and the seven-hour flight from Dubai was the longest I had ever flown on. I pushed my luggage to the exit and saw a gray car with the name of the university I was going to attend. I guessed it was to pick me up, and sure enough.
After leaving the airport, the driver and I chatted. He said I was the last freshman he picked up that day. He told me about the city and its people, as well as what to see and experience. I love driving, so we talked about cars and what it was like to drive in Dubai. He also talked about his experience of driving in London.
“Never make the people here angry,” he warned, “never get into a conflict with people on the road. It's very dangerous!” He then talked about his own experience of having conflicts with people on the road. By the time he finished, I had already made up my mind that I would definitely keep a low profile on the road.
Not long after the car hit the road, the car behind us flashed its lights sharply, and the more they flashed, the more nervous the driver got. Then the car sounded its horn (喇叭) and flashed its lights again, and we had to pull over to a bright spot on the side of the road. My heart was beating wildly when the owner of the car behind me came up and walked towards me, but I tried to show a brave expression.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He approached my window and I rolled down the window.

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. D

第二节(满分25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a wet evening in September 2013, my flight landed in London. I was 19 years old and came to Britain to study mechanical engineering at university. It was also the first time that I had left home since I grew up in Dubai.
I felt lonely homesick, and the rainy day that greeted me at the airport was really unpleasant.
Not long after the car hit the road the car behind us flashed its lights sharply, and the more they flashed, the more nervous the driver got. Then the car sounded its horn (喇叭) and flashed its lights again, and we had to pull over to a bright spot on the side of the road. My heart was beating wildly when the owner of the car behind me came up and walked towards me, but I tried to show a brave expression.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He approached my window and I rolled down the window.

I took my wallet back and breathed a sigh of relief.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 He approached my window and I rolled down the window. I tried to force a smile. He reached into the car and I let out a loud “Whoa”, which is used to tell someone to become calmer. Then I looked down at his hands to see that he was holding a wallet. “Is it yours? I have found it at the airport and tried to catch up with you.” the man said. I opened the wallet which contained my passport and some cash. I had left it behind on the trolley at the airport and this man had been trying to return it to me. At this moment, I realized that we had wronged him completely.
I took my wallet back and breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you very much”, I said to the stranger. “You are welcome.” he said with a smile, which put me at ease. Then we left. When we arrived, the driver wished me good luck with my university studies and drove away. These acts of kindness cheered me up and thanks to this honest stranger, the initial self-doubt I had about my decision to study so far away from home was replaced with hope and excitement.
