Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things, we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities, the rubbish is collected and taken outside of the city to a dump(垃圾场). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs(浴缸) and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus(腐殖质), which looks like black earth. It is rich with some kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow.

I went to my first music festival—We Love Green. It was held over a weekend in a park in Paris. Like most music festivals, it had wonderful singers and music. However, there was something special about this one. You see, this was a green festival!
From the food to the stalls (摊位), everything was as environmentally friendly as possible. The festival was powered by solar energy. There were specially labeled bins (贴有标签的垃圾桶) so that the waste could be used again after the festival. Free fresh water was provided for everyone so that guests didn’t need to buy drinks in plastic bottles. There were many stalls for everyone, from little children to the old.
This seems like such a great idea, to make something very fun and not cause great pollution to the environment. I have discovered that there are more events similar to this across the world! I really hope that there will be more events like We Love Green. These environmentally friendly practices tell people being green doesn’t mean being boring. It can be quite fun. As a result, more people may be encouraged to consider the role they play in the environmental protection.

Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt (被状物) over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must clean their water now before it is thrown away and they mustn’t let dirty smoke go into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.
20. The most serious kind of pollution is ________.
A. noise pollution B. air pollution
C. water pollution D. A, B and C
21. Factories must clean their water ________.
A. before they are thrown away
B. when they are thrown away
C. after it is thrown away
D. before it is thrown away
22. From the passage, we know that ________.

B. today people don’t have to talk to each other loudly
C. we can drink water from the polluted rivers and lakes
D. people are making rules in order to (为了) fight pollution

While long-distance travel is not a top choice during the COVID-19 pandemic (大流行), camping has risen as a new travel trend (趋势) for people living in Chinese cities.
A report by online travel website Tongcheng Travel showed that during the recent May Day holiday, camping-related searches increased by 117 percent compared with April. Forests and islands were the two most popular location (地点) types.
Ji Nan, 31, from Zhejiang, went camping with her friends in the mountains during the holiday. “It was relaxing,” Ji told China Daily. She said camping is a good way to get closer to nature and enjoy outdoor activities.
The growing popularity has also increased the need for camping equipment (装备) such as tents, outdoor tables and chairs and sleeping bags. Trip, an online travel agency, said page views for their camping goods on the first day of the May Day holiday rose by 90 percent over the previous (之前的) week, reported Global Times.
However, the need for campsites(营地)is greater. “Everywhere is full and there is a tent every several meters,” a tourist surnamed Yun, from Beijing, told Global Times. Besides, camping isn’t always good for the local environment. In Beijing’s Shuangfeng campsite, some of the land is barren (荒芜的) from too much foot traffic. Rubbish, like bamboo barbecue sticks and plastic plates (塑料餐盘), could be seen everywhere, reported Xinhua.
The government needs to provide more green space for tourists and call on people to protect the environment while camping, said Song Yu a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
23. Which places are the most popular for camping?
A. Forests and city parks. B. Forests and islands. C. Islands and city parks.
24. In Paragraph 4, the underlined word “increase” means “ ” in Chinese.

A. There are enough campsites for tourists.
B. People throw rubbish everywhere when they are camping.
C. Foot traffic is always good for the land.
26. What should the government do according to the passage?
A. Stop people from eating food at campsites.
B. Encourage more people to go camping.
C. Call on campers to protect the environment.

Whether you’ve noticed it or not, fewer and fewer bees are around us now. About one quarter of the world’s 20,000 bee species (品种) have disappeared since 1990.
There are many reasons for that, including too much use of pesticides (杀虫剂), loss of plants and human activities that damage (破坏) their living places. But the main reason is the climate change, which is changing the bees’ environments in a faster way than they are able to get used to.
A map of where bees live across the world was just made by scientists from China and the US. To help people know about bees and protect them better, they tried to find out different species of bees in different areas. According to the map, there are more species of bees in the north half than in the south half of the earth, and more in dry warm areas than in wet forest areas.
In fact, bees are important contributors to humans and the whole world. When bees are flying from one place to another, they are helping many plants to pollinate (授粉). In other words, without bees, fresh fruit and vegetables would be fewer and fewer around the world. Therefore, we human should make our efforts to protect bees.
As for what to do to help, plant some plants to attract bees to your garden. If you see bees around you, take some photos and post them on the Internet so scientists can help find out where bees live and how bees move. We can come up with more ideas to save bee populations around the world.
27. How many bee species have disappeared since 1990?
A. About 5,000. B. About 10,000. C. About 20,000. D. Over 20,000 .
28. Which is NOT a reason for the drop of bee population?
A. Wide use of pesticides. B. Worse living places.
C. The fast climate change. D. Fewer fresh fruit and vegetables.
29. Which does the bee map tell us?
A. Bees like living in wet places. B. Bees are protected better than before.
C. Where different bee species live. D. The south half of the earth has more bee species.
30. What does the underlined word “contributors” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Makers B. Helpers C. Finders D. Carriers
31. What is the last paragraph about?
A. Ways of bee protection. B. Changes of bees’ living environment.
C. Bee populations around the world. D. The importance of protecting bee species.
