Ben is very successful in business. In his office, trophies (奖杯) of all sizes and shapes sit on the bookshelves.
But recently, Ben surprised me when he said he wanted to throw away all these photos and trophies. I asked him why, and he told me that his business was going through a hard time. The past success, he said, was only making his troubles seem worse. “I feel like they’re laughing at me.”
Like Ben, many of us are proud of our success. We put our trophies on our bookshelves to remember those moments of winning and joy forever. But all the great things we get won’t last forever. This understanding can keep us stuck in the past. Then, as Ben found, our trophies might “laugh at” us in the end.
Trophies of all kinds make us happy by bringing back happy memories. However we should find joy in what really matters in our lives. We could, for example, keep a diary of happy memories, such as good times with our friends and family. Then, in moments of sadness, we can read through this diary.
Honoring our great success is different from remembering the sweet moments in daily life. Let’s say you just lost an important competition. This can hurt a lot. Thinking of happy times with friends can help you through times like these. It shows you that plenty of people still love and value you. Looking at your “Global Student Prize” is probably a bad idea. It might only make you feel worse.
Our lives are made up of ups and downs. It’s silly to compare the hard times with the best parts of your past.
16. Why does the writer mention friend Ben in the passage?
A. To start a story. B. To lead in a topic.
C. To introduce his success. D. To describe their friendship.
17. Why did Ben think these trophies were laughing at him?
A. Because Ben was afraid to forget the past.
B. Because these trophies only stood for the past.
C. Because Ben couldn’t get these trophies any more.
D. Because Ben lost confidence when seeing these trophies.
18. Which of the following might the writer agree?
A. It’s really important to remember the past success.
B. It’s meaningful to compare the downs with the past.
C. Remembering our great success can make us proud of ourselves.
D. Thinking of the happiness in the past may help us through hard times.
【答案】16. B 17. D 18. D
根据“Like Ben, many of us are proud of our success ... ”和“Trophies of all kinds make us happy by bringing back happy memories. However, we should find joy in what really matters in our lives.”可知,作者提到本与奖杯的故事,是为了引出本文的写作主题。故选B。
【17题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The past success, he said, was only making his troubles seem worse. ‘I feel like they’re laughing at me.’ ”可知,在本看来,过去的成功只会让他的麻烦看起来更糟,他甚至觉得那些象征过去荣誉的奖杯在嘲笑他;由此推知本看到这些奖杯丧失了信心。故选D。
【18题详解】
观点态度题。根据“Let’s say you just lost an important competition. This can hurt a lot. Thinking of happy times with friends can help you through times like these.”可推知,回想过去的快乐可以帮助我们度过困难时期。故选D。

①Gardeners and parents always look for how to best care for their plants. Your watering plays a big part here. But which is better for your plants, rainwater or tap water? The best water for your plants depends on your hydration (水合) situation.
②Tap water is quite easy to get, which is its main advantage. If you choose to use it for the convenience, make sure you know where your tap water comes from.
③Tap water is often tested and reaches safety standards. In other places, it may have high levels of chlorine (氯), and others that will harm your plants. Remember that you can always filter (过滤) your tap water to make it safe for plant watering.
④A great reason to use rainwater for your plants is to save water and money. Rainwater may also have higher levels of nitrogen (N₂) when compared to tap water which is good for your plants.
⑤When you use rainwater, you avoid the harmful chemicals altogether and don’t have to worry about filtering them out. This is a big reason why rainwater is often better than tap.
⑥Remember that rainwater does have its disadvantages. The way you collect your rainwater greatly decides how safe it is for your plants. Only collect rainwater using clean collectors to avoid the harmful chemicals. Also, pay special attention to what the collectors are made of.
⑦In the end, rainwater is likely to be better for your plants when collected in a safe way. However, tap water still works well when the chemicals are filtered out. Remember that the most important thing is to keep your plants happy and hydrated.
19. According to the passage, what can we learn about tap water?

Recently we had a new student start at Gumnut Primary. Her name is Amina. When Mr Yarrum introduced her her eyes were looking down to the ground and her shoulders were curling (弯曲) forward. She was covering her face a little with the scarf on her head. Mr Yarrum helped Amina to put away her school bag and find a table and chair at a shared desk.
I could understand Amina, because I was once the new kid at Gumnut Primary too. Two years ago, my mum got a new job in another city, so my family moved and I couldn’t stay at my old school. I have been the same as Amina, being introduced to a class full of new faces. This made me wonder why someone would have to leave their country and move away to the other side of the world.
When the bell went for lunch, I waited around to speak with Mr Yarrum. I wanted to know why Amina and her family had moved so far away from their home to Australia. Mr Yarrum told me there was a war in her country, and they moved her to be safe.
At lunchtime, I saw Amina sitting by herself on the bench (长椅). She looked lonely, so I decided to go over and sit with her. Amina didn’t speak any English, which made it a bit difficult to communicate with her. This got me thinking, maybe I could use body language to invite Amina to come and play handball with me and my other friends. Helping a negative (悲观的) friend can be challenging and can have a lot to do with your health. In this blog post, we will discuss some ways to help a negative friend and take care of yourself.
If you have a friend who is always negative, the first step is to communicate your worries to them. 1 Try to use “I” statements, such as “I feel terrible when you always say you hate working.”
If your friend continues to be negative no matter how hard you try to communicate with them, it may be necessary to set boundaries (边界). 2 You can also avoid certain topics of conversation, or make it clear that you don’t want to have a negative talking.
Sometimes, people who are negative or bring others down are going through a difficult time and need support (支持). 3 You can make it clear that you are happy to offer support, but that you don’t want to listen to negativity all the time.
4 For example, you can ask your friend about things they’re looking forward to or share something good in your life. In this way, you may be able to make your friends happy and help them see things with hope.
A. It can be helpful to change the conversation towards more cheerful topics.

二、阅读理解(本题有 10小题,每小题1分;共计10分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Ben is very successful in business.
However, we should find joy in what really matters in our lives.
18 Which of the following might the writer agree?
A. It’s really important to remember the past success.
B. It’s meaningful to compare the downs with the past.
C. Remembering our great success can make us proud of ourselves.
D. Thinking of the happiness in the past may help us through hard times.

Recently we had a new student start at Gumnut Primary. Her name is Amina. When Mr Yarrum introduced her, her eyes were looking down to the ground and her shoulders were curling (弯曲) forward.
I waved for her to follow me and gestured (做手势) with my hands a game of handball. ________
Amina turned out to be very good at handball, and by the end of lunch had a big smile on her face.
22 How did Amina feel when Mr Yarrum introduce her to the class?
A. Nervous and shy. B. Excited but shy. C. Confident and happy. D. Lonely but hopeful.
23. Which is the correct order of the following activities?
①The writer met Amina. ②The writer invited Amina to play.
③The writer spoke with Mr Yarrum. ④The writer moved to Gumnut Primary.
A. ①④②③ B. ①②④③ C. ④①③② D. ④③①②
24. Which of the following is the best to fill in ________ in Paragraph 4?
A. She nodded and followed me to the playground. B. She refused and ran away to the classroom.
C. She said something and hurried towards Mr Yarrum. D. She looked pale and went back for a rest.
25. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Being confident is helpful in a new school.
B. Being kind is a good way to communicate with others.
C. Developing a good hobby is good for making friends.
D. Speaking the same language makes a difference in friendship.
