I was lying under a tree and didn’t know what was happening around me. My body was hot. I had a terrible headache. A few minutes later, I was on my way to the hospital.
It was a hot summer day. I, along with hundreds of other runners, came to Beijing for a running race. Halfway through the race, I started to feel dizzy (眩晕的). I didn’t want to give up, so I decided to go on. But it was too hot, and before I could finish the race, I fell down.
Some people said I had heat stroke (暑). Later, however, I learned I had heat exhaustion (热衰竭). What’s the difference?
If we exercise too long in the heat, our bodies can lose too much water and get too hot and we will experience heat exhaustion. If so, our body temperature will increase. We will feel tired and want to drink water. Often, we have a headache. If you get heat exhaustion, find a cool place right away. Drink enough water and rest. Soon you can get better. If you don’t do these, heat exhaustion may turn into heat stroke.
Heat stroke is very dangerous. It happens when one’s body gets too hot from being in hot weather for too long. If someone has heat stroke, his body temperature will go up to 40℃ or even higher. They need to see a doctor at once. They won’t get better without treatment (治疗). People who get heat stroke will feel dizzy, breathe fast and even die.

One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Ray, to help with dinner, his question shocked me. “What is a colander (漏勺)?”he asked.
In the family, nobody else went into the kitchen to cook for the family except me! That night, as I told him that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I realized that I should do something for Ray’s future life. I thought to myself, “As a mother, while I care about my son’s grades and characters, I always forget that I should also raise (抚养) someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband or father. My son needs to prepare more abilities and skills for his future life.” He should try to solve all kinds of problems by himself instead of always asking his mother, “What’s for dinner?”
So I came up with a plan: Start a housework course (课程) for Ray! I was glad to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, he washed and seasoned (为……调味) a chicken for cooking in a hot oven. Then he took 30 minutes to prepare his mashed potatoes, apple pie and carrot pieces. When the chicken was ready, he cut it into pieces, rolled them up and filled with apple pie. He did all of these while listening to my teaching steps. I knew that all these were boring for him. He tried to stop the terrible lessons, but I refused him. At last, our housework course lasted for one year.
“I appreciate (感激) what you do as a mom.” he told me one day.
Now, Ray understands the importance of doing housework, and more importantly, he realizes people learn independence and self-reliance because they have to do. Not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for the family. That’s what I call a man.
26. When the writer heard her son’s question, she felt________.

A. Apples pies. B. Chicken pieces. C. Cooking steps. D. School lessons.
29. This chart shows how the story goes on. Which is the missing part?
A. Son’s Feeling: Stop the terrible lessons.
B. Son’s Plan: Make a big meal for himself.
C. Son’s Dream: Do all the housework for his family.
D Son’s Change: Understand independence and be thankful.

“Nothing is okay, Mom,” said the boy. “Today, in our science lesson, Mrs Green talked about the environment. The whole world is getting dirtier and many animals and plants are dying. She wants us to think of something we can do to help. I thought all the way home, but I find that there is nothing I can do to make a difference to it.”
“Let me tell you a story,” the mother said after thinking for a while. “One morning a man was walking down a beach, there he saw thousands of starfish (海星) covering the beach, they were pushed up by the waves and it was too far for them to make their way back by themselves. The man shook his head as he walked along, ‘What a shame! So many starfish will die on the beach.’ The man felt very sorry for those starfish. Then he walked away. And just at that time he was surprised to see a little boy. The boy was throwing the starfish back into the sea as fast as he could.
‘How silly you are!’ the man said. ‘There are so many starfish, and can you throw all of them back?’
The boy didn’t stop but kept throwing. ‘Though I can’t help them all, I can make a difference to this one, and this one, and this one.’ said the boy.

During the summer, please be very careful when you’re out in the sun.

A. worried B. angry C. excited D. bored
27. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. Mom is the best teacher. B. Your life depends on yourself.

28. What does the underlined word “these” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Apples pies. B. Chicken pieces. C. Cooking steps. D. School lessons.
29. This chart shows how the story goes on. Which is the missing part?
A. Son’s Feeling: Stop the terrible lessons.
B. Son’s Plan: Make a big meal for himself.
C. Son’s Dream: Do all the housework for his family.

The little boy, Tyler, entered the house unhappily. His mother was making cakes in the kitchen. She smiled as she turned around, but stopped when she saw his face. “Tyler, what happened? Is everything okay?”

Save the Wild Animals
The earth is home to both humans and wild animals. But today some wild animals are facing serious problems. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
Save the Wild Animals
The earth is home to both humans and wild animals. But today some wild animals are facing serious problems.
There are many endangered animals in the world, such as tigers and pandas. When farmers cut down trees, tigers can no longer hide and hunt. Many tigers are killed by people who want to sell their fur for money. Many rivers are polluted by factories. And there are few places where pandas can live.
We are not alone in the world. We human beings could not live without all the plants and animals around us. So protecting wild animals is very important. We must take measures to keep plants from being destroyed and stop animals from being killed. We should actively do volunteer activities and distribute posters telling people to love wild animals. It is very easy but useful. We should also do more research to protect them and build more reserves for them.
