I got an invitation to take part in an education meeting at a high school. At lunchtime, I saw a young girl who looked familiar. I knew she had been a student of mine. I tried hard to recall her name, but I couldn’t. It really made me sad, as I have always been able to remember former students.
Her eyes met mine and she threw her arms around me and said, “Mrs G, it’s me Sarah, and I’m still writing!” All the memories soon came back to my mind. You see, Sarah wasn’t a student in my classroom. Sarah’s mother had left her family and her father was absent(缺席的) from her life as well. She was sent to live with foster parents(养父母). Sarah was angry, often got in trouble and was often in the principal’s (校长的) office.
It was during one of those office visits that I first met her. She was writing in a notebook with a rather angry look on her face. I introduced myself to her and asked her what she was writing about. Sarah shared her story with me. Her writing spoke to me. It filled my heart and I knew it was good for her to put her thoughts on paper. Every morning at school before I started my classes, she would come into my classroom and we would work on her writing skills.
My experience years ago with Sarah taught me that teachers have a great influence upon their students, even when those students are troubled. Taking the time to talk with a child has the power to truly change that child’s life. That’s why I teach.
6. What made the writer feel sad at lunchtime?
A. She didn’t expect the girl to be a waitress. B. She hadn’t seen the girl for a long time.
C. She couldn’t remember the girl’s name. D. She was still able to remember the student.

A. She moved to the writer’s classroom. B. She once left home to look for her parents.
C. She wanted to live with foster parents. D. She often caused lots of trouble.
8. Why did the writer decide to help with the girl’s writing?
A. To show off her writing skills. B. To help the girl express her thoughts freely.
C. To help the girl realize her mistakes. D. To follow the principal’s order.
9. What has the writer learned from this experience?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Parents should offer a happy family life for their kids.
C. Teachers can influence students a lot. D. Teachers should use their spare time to help others.
10. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The true friendship B. Teachers can make a big difference

Sweat (汗水) poured down Simon’s face. He was preparing for a basketball game and he would win. That was a pretty sure thing. After all, he wasn’t just good, he was excellent.
Basketball was a way of life in Simon’s family. His older brother Reggie was now playing at a top college. Simon was ready to follow in his brother’s footsteps and make his family proud. But he had a secret. Simon’s heart wasn’t in it anymore. He had another sport on his mind.
Then Simon jumped on a bus heading home. Through the bus window, he could see cheerleaders dancing and performing amazingly on the field. Simon became interested. He pulled out a paper from his backpack. Across the top in big letters was the phrase: Cheerleading Competition (啦啦队比赛). That’s what Simon really wanted to do. ▲
Although it is accepted that cheerleading was for girls, Simon knew the meaning of cheerleading for a game. He also knew that cheerleading wouldn’t just be a physical challenge; it would be an emotional (有感染力的) one, too. Now, he knew it was time for him to tell his family.
As soon as he arrived home, his parents and Reggie were at the door. Simon hugged Reggie. “You’re home?” “Of course, little man. I planned to come to your game. You’re going to be a better player than me!” Everyone in the family was smiling except Simon. His family had such high expectations of him when it came to basketball. But Simon was tired of trying to keep up with his brother. He was ready to follow his heart. “I don’t think I want to play ball anymore,” he said, “I want to do something else.” The family stood confused (困惑的). “Like what, son?” his father said, breaking the silence. “Cheerleading,” Simon replied. Nervous, unbelievable laughter followed that word. They thought he was joking. “That’s what I really want to do,” Simon said in a voice that came out louder than expected. When they saw he was serious, they were quiet.
Over the next few weeks, his family began to understand and support him for the big event. Over weeks of hard training, he could see that he was improving with practice. Then it was time for the competition. Dad, Mom, Reggie cheered Simon on. As the music played, he hit every beat the best he could. The following Monday, the results of the competition came out. Simon saw his name at the top of the list. He made it. This time, he felt proud of himself. So did the family.
