Nearly every family trip we went on when I was a kid was spent flying across the plane from Boston to Rio de Janeiro, and then driving to the tiny town where my grandparents grew up in Minas Gerais. There you’ll find rolling hills as far as you can see. That’s where my cousins live, work and grow coffee. That trek — a five-hour flight, then an eight-hour flight, and then a road trip — was always just the lead-up to the last leg of the journey.
I here we’d drink the coffee out of little glass cups and get to catching up by the wood stove. My brother and I would sometimes wander out while the adults were talking. Coffee in Minas Gerais is usually served sickly sweet, but never with milk, and never iced, even in the middle of summer.
Most of the highest-quality beans in Minas Gerais are sold abroad. When I was a kid especially, there wasn’t really a coffee culture in Brazil the way there is in New York or Boston.
But in college I worked at a cafe. There I was taught to notice all those things I’d never learned about coffee, even though I’d seen the coffee fruit on the trees and watched firsthand as my cousins spread the fruit onto big, wavy multicolored sheets under the sun to dry.
I learned then that my cousins’ process for preparing coffee was just one of many ways to do it — you could dry it in the sun or in a big machine, or it could be fermented, or washed first. All these methods could change the way the coffee tasted. I also learned that different regions have different taste profiles. I learned to think about tasting coffee as playing a word-association game. What does it make you think of? What memory comes up for you?
Today when I get up and make my first cup of coffee, I do it like performing a sacred ritual. I know that those beans traveled far, and were cared for. They were grown, and watered, and dried, and then roasted. Someone probably lost sleep over them when frost was in the forecast. And when I take my first sip, I make sure to let my brain go blank, listen to the coffee and see where it takes me.
4. What was the author’s family journey to Minas Gerais like?
A. Short but tiring. B. Long but exciting.
C. Long and wearing. D. Short and appealing.
5. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. What effect the coffee culture had on the author.
B. Why coffee from different regions tastes different.
C. How the author’s cousins’ farming differs from other regions’.
D. What the author obtained during his dealing with coffee.
6. Why does the author make coffee with great respect?
A. It’s a kind of coffee culture.
B. It is his daily routine.
C. The coffee comes from his hometown.
D. It takes great effort to grow and produce coffee.
7. What message is conveyed in the author’s story?
A. Live to learn. B. Love what you do.
C. Cherish something after knowing it. D. Prepare before acting.
C
A lot of scientific and technological achievements within the last 100 years was prophesied (预言) within sci-f literature long before they came into physical existence. Throughout modern history, there has been a symbiotic (共生的) relationship between fiction and those in the science and technology fields. Pioneering science fiction synthesises (综合) and popularizes (普及) new ideas of the imagination, which in turn can lead to others establishing the real-world with such ideas.
This idea highlights the notion that these so-called “fiction” writers are not just predicting the future but actually indirectly creating it.
For instance, Black Mirror: Nosedive predicted a range of technological developments. It imagined a personality rating system, which is now starting to be introduced within China, as a private credit and behavior scoring system called “Sesame (芝麻) credit”. This system conducts behavioral analysis data based on the citizens ’ bill payments, abilities to hold contracts, shopping habits, online behavior and characteristics of online friendships. Very low scores can affect people’s real-world lives — as described in the Black Mirror, the public is restricted from making reservations at hotels or restaurants, for example.
Something as simple as providing inspiration for an idea that an inventor can actually develop shows the shaping effect the domain can have on the world. Google Glass, self-driving cars, artificial intelligence — even human genetic modification, anti-aging processes, and space travel —are all ideas that appeared in science fiction before reality. Elon Musk’s SpaceX plan of colonizing Mars is an example that we are going to see for ourselves.
Over time, history shows that science fiction is less of a predictor of the future and more of an indirect creator. With the inspiration of many aspects of our modern life based on sci-fi films, television, books, etc., the genre itself can be seen as effectively playing a part in shaping our future. What do you think will be the next real-world sci-fi creation? Flying cars? Neural networks? We can only wait to find out ...
8. What role does “sci-fi literature” play in the real world according to the text?
A. A creator of the future. B. A reflection of the real world.
C. A source of new ideas. D. A signal of new scientific breakthroughs.
9. What is the author’s purpose of writing Paragraph 3?
A. To recommend a sci-f TV show.
B. To explain why sci-fi artworks can predict the future.
C. To describe how sci-fi artworks shape the future.
D. To show the importance of building the “Sesame credit" system.
10. Why does the author give an example of Elon Musk’s SpaceX plan?
A. To tell people where the SpaceX plan came from.
B. To prove the SpaceX plan is worthy of investment.
C. To show how a sci-fi idea inspires inventors to turn it into reality.
D. To emphasize the relationship between virtual and real worlds.
11. What would be the best title for this text?
A. How Science Fiction is Shaping Our Future
B. Should We Be Worried about the Sci-fi Artworks?
C. Why Should We Encourage the Sci-fi Creation?
D. Technological Development Contributes to Sci-fi Artworks
D
Goats can distinguish between a happy and angry voice, suggesting they can pick up emotional cues in speech, and may become cautious or anxious from aggressive tones.
Researchers played audio recordings of happy and angry human voices to animals at Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats in Maidstone, Kent. Dr Marianne Mason, of the University of Roehampton, said:“We predicted that if goats could discriminate (区分) emotional content conveyed in the human voice, they would look faster and for longer towards the source of the sound." They found that when the recording switched from a friendly to an angry voice, the goats became alert and spent longer gazing towards the sound.
Professor Alan McElligott, an expert in animal behaviour and welfare at City University of Hong Kong, said that this study offers the first evidence that goats can discriminate between cues expressed in the human voice.
Goats were the first livestock (家畜) species to be domesticated (驯化) about 10000 years ago and experts believe the length of time spent with humans may have helped them develop a sensitivity to human speech. Prof McElligott has previously shown that goats can read human emotional expressions, suggesting that companion animals like dogs and horses are not the only ones to perceive different human facial cues. Goats will gaze wolves, for example, who have never learned how to co-exist with humans.
The team also demonstrated that goats can work out how to break into a sealed box using levers, a task used to measure intelligence in apes. They can even remember the skill four years later, without prompting.
In the new experiments, the researchers did not notice any significant physiological changes among the goats, such as a raised heartbeat when exposed to changes in tone.
However, experts have warned annoyed voices may cause fear in animals while positive speech may be perceived as calming and may even encourage animals to approach and help with human-animal bonding.
Prof McElligott concluded, “Further research is needed to understand the importance of the human voice on the emotional lives of goats and other domesticated species.’
12. Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined word “aggressive” in the first paragraph?
A. Calm. B. Angry. C. Excited. D. Powerful.
13. How do the scientists confirm whether goats can distinguish emotions in human’ s voices?
A. By observing the expressions on their faces.
B. By observing their action after hearing happy words.
C. By the time length they gaze at the source of the sound.
D. By the reaction speed when they hear specific words conveying emotions.
14. What do we know about goats from the text?
A They have a high level of intelligence.
B. They are the first species to be domesticated by humans.
C. They have the same reaction as wolves when finishing a task.
D. Their heart rate will increase obviously when hearing the changes in tones.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Goats prefer positive happy faces.
B. Goats are sensitive to humans’ vocal cues.
C. The influence of human tones on domesticating goats.
D. The importance of recognizing human emotions for goats.

On this day, Jay and the boys were sitting on a tree when Jay spotted something on the ground. “What do you think that could be?” he asked Mike and Tony.
They jumped down and went to take a closer look. They found a gold money clip (钱夹) holding five hundred dollars.
Mike exclaimed (惊叫),“Awesome! We can split up the money, and we will each be much closer to being able to buy the new bikes we want.” “Jay was the one who spotted the cash,” said Tony. “He should get more than us. He should get three hundred dollars, and we should each get one hundred.” “We can't keep the money. It is not ours,” said Jay. “Whoever lost the money was not very responsible and should learn a lesson about not walking around with that much cash on them," yelled Mike,
“Let us all go home and think about this,” said Jay. Mike and Tony agreed. Jay kept the money, and they all rode their bikes home. They decided to meet up after dinner.
Mike and Tony lived on the same street so they rode home together. They were able to talk a bit more. The more they talked, the more they came to see Jay's point. They also thought about how upset they would be if they accidentally lost something that was important to them.

But in college, I worked at a cafe.

B. Why coffee from different regions tastes different.
C How the author’s cousins’ farming differs from other regions’.

6. Why does the author make coffee with great respect?
A. It’s a kind of coffee culture.
B. It is his daily routine.
C. The coffee comes from his hometown.
D. It takes great effort to grow and produce coffee.
7. What message is conveyed in the author’s story?

Goats were the first livestock (家畜) species to be domesticated (驯化) about 10,000 years ago and experts believe the length of time spent with humans may have helped them develop a sensitivity to human speech.
A Calm. B. Angry. C. Excited. D. Powerful.
A. They have a high level of intelligence.

【答案】With different media across China coming up with various show, TV talent show has grown in popularity in recent years. Meanwhile, it is not uncommon to see many young people, even high school students, attend these shows.
As far as I am concerned, TV talent show is like a double-edged sword, which can do us both good and harm. On the one hand, these shows can provide precious opportunities for the young to express themselves and to perform their talents of singing, dancing and so on. On the other hand, they may also mislead the youth and make them believe that they can make easy money or become famous overnight, ignoring the fact of “No pains, no gains.”
Therefore, it is of vital importance for us, especially young people and their parents, to think twice before attending them.

It was the middle of a bright sunny day, and Jay and his friends Mike and Tony were riding their dirty bikes on a path. Occasionally Jay and his friends would stop to climb a tree and find a branch to sit on so they could take a break from riding in the heat.
