Abraham Lincoln was a typical self-made man. He got his license (执照) to practice law without ever having stopped foot inside a college. Everywhere he went, Lincoln carried a book with him. He looked through page after page while his horse rested at the end of a long row of planting. Whenever he could escape work, he would lie with his head against a tree and read.
Though the young Lincoln never left America, he traveled with Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage to Spain and Portugal: accompanied Robert Burns to Edinburgh; and followed the English kings into battle with Shakespeare. As he explored the wonders of literature and the history of the country, the young Lincoln developed ambitions (志向) far beyond the expectations of his family and neighbors. It was through literature that he was able to go beyond his surroundings and reach his destination.
The books to feed Lincoln’s knowledge hunger did not come cheaply. The story is often recounted of the time he borrowed Parson Weems’s The Life of George Washington from Josiah Crawford, a well-to-do farmer. Touched by this story of the first president’s life, he took the book to his room at night, where he read as long as he could stay awake, placing the book on a shell between the logs (圆木) so he could fetch it at daybreak. During a heavy rainstorm one day, the book was badly soiled. Lincoln went to Crawford’s house, explained what had happened and offered to work off the value of the book. Crawford worked out the value of two full days’ work pulling corn, which Lincoln considered an unfair repayment. Nevertheless, he straightaway set to work and kept on until all work was done. Then, having paid his debt, Lincoln wrote poems and songs making fun of Crawford’s large nose. Thus Crawford won an everlasting place in Lincoln’s writings.
4. What can we learn about Lincoln from the first paragraph?
A. He failed to get a law license. B. He preferred working to reading.

5. Which of the following contributed the most to Lincoln’s achievement?

6. What happened to the book Lincoln borrowed from Crawford?
A. It was stolen by a farmer. B. It was burned by a circle fire.
C. It was damaged in a rainstorm. D. It was lost and never to be found.
7. Which of the following can best describe Lincoln according to the last paragraph?
A. Proud and helpful. B. Honest and determined.
C. Creative and curious. D. Intelligent and competitive.

When it comes to the capital city of Japan, people often picture a crowded modern city of concrete jungle (水泥丛林). Tokyo has little space for parks covered with trees and grass. However, the condition is taking a turn for the better. In an attempt to add a little greenery to the concrete, Tokyo has a rooftop project started, in which man y city roofs are being turned into gardens.
Rooftop planting has been on the rise since the city government made it mandatory (强制的) for new buildings to cover at least 20 percent of available space with greenery. “You see buildings and buildings all around Tokyo. Tokyo obviously notes more greenery as a city, and rooftop greening may be one way to do it.” said Atsuro Tarutoko, manager of the Hearton Hotel, which was built with a $100,000 rooftop garden.
Green roofs house a wide range of pleats which include flowers and grasses. They are appealing to the eyes. Apart from that, green roofs are environmentally friendly. Experts say the green rolls also provide environmental benefits as the gardens cut is door temperatures , reducing air-conditioning costs.
“I believe part of our jobs is to try to add some quality space into the city’s surroundings and allow local people to feel that quality,” said Aya Mugita, a construction project developer at a recent green technology display in Tokyo.
Some information technology companies are already cashing in on the rooftop greenery business. “We provide software that figures out the amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) that can be absorbed by a garden based on the types and numbers of trees to be planted there,” said Yutaka Tanaka of Tokyo-based software designer Ecol System. But experts say changing the city jungle into a green garden will take tens of years.
8. What is the purpose of the rooftop project in Tokyo?
A. To increase living space. B. To make the city greener.
C. To improve construction quality. D. To save concrete used in building.
9. What can be known about the roof plants?
A. They are easy to plant. B. They have limited variety.
C. They take up too much space. D. They beautify the surroundings.
10. What do the experts mean in the last paragraph?
A. The project is not well received by the citizens.

How often have you wondered what the boy sitting across from you on the bus is really thinking? It seems that you will never really know for sure. After all, the content of our thoughts is unperceivable to anyone else.
Neuroscience (神经科学) research into how we think and what we’re thinking makes it possible to watch directly into the brain to read out the physical make-up of our thoughts, some would say to read our minds.
The technology that is changing what once was impossible in science into just plain science is a specialized use of MRI scanning (扫描) called “functional MRI”, fMRI for short. It makes it possible to see what’s going on inside the brain while people are thinking.
What neuroscientist Marcel Just and his colleagues have done is combine fMRI’s ability to look at the brain in action with computer science's new power to sort through massive amounts of data. The goal is to see if they could identify exactly what happens in the brain when people think specific thoughts.
They did an experiment where they asked subjects to think about ten objects—five of them tools like scissors or rulers, and live of them buildings like castles or towers. They then recorded and analyzed the activity in the subjects’ brains for each. When we think “ruler” or “tower” for example, Just says neurons start firing at varying levels of intensity (强度) in different areas throughout the brain. “And we found that we could identify which object they were thinking about from their brain activation patterns (激活模式) . We're identifying the thought that’s taking place,” he said.
IMRI scanning has already been used to try to figure out what we want to buy and how to sell it to us. It’s a new field called “neuromarketing”. One of its pioneers, Gemma Calvert, says it’s a growing field. “What we’ve seen is a sort of snowballing effect over the last few years.”
12. Which can best replace the underlined word “unperceivable” in paragraph 1?
A. Definite. B. Professional. C. Various. D. Secret.
13. What is fMRI used to do?
A. Observe your physical activities. B. Introduce plain science to the public.
C. Figure out what you are thinking about. D. Find out how your brain is made up of.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The process of the experiment. B. The objects used in the experiment.
C. The major findings of the research. D. The subjects involved in the research.
15. What does Gemma Calvert think of neuromarketing?
A. Fruitless. B. Promising. C. Challenging. D. Unpredictable.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B
【解析】

【12题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第一段的“How often have you wondered what the boy sitting across from you on the bus is really thinking? It seems that you will never really know for sure. After all, the content of our thoughts is unperceivable to anyone else. (你有多少次想知道坐在你对面的男孩在想什么?似乎你永远不会真正知道答案。毕竟,我们思考的内容是别人……的。)”可知,我们无法知道别人在思考什么,同样地我们在思考什么,别人也是无法察觉的,即对别人而言是秘密的,因此secret(秘密的)可以解释划线词。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“It makes it possible to see what’s going on inside the brain while people are thinking. (当人们在思考的时候,我们可以看到大脑内部发生了什么。) ”可知,fMRI是用来弄清楚你在想什么的。故选C。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段的“They did an experiment where they asked subjects to think about ten objects—five of them tools like scissors or rulers, and live of them buildings like castles or towers. They then recorded and analyzed the activity in the subjects’ brains for each. When we think “ruler” or “tower” for example, Just says neurons start firing at varying levels of intensity in different areas throughout the brain. “And we found that we could identify which object they were thinking about from their brain activation patterns. We’re identifying the thought that’s taking place,” he said. 故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“One of its pioneers, Gemma Calvert, says it’s a growing field. “What we’ve seen is a sort of snowballing effect over the last few years.” (其先驱之一Gemma Calvert表示,这是一个不断发展的领域。“在过去几年里,我们看到了一种滚雪球效应。”)”可知,Gemma Calvert认为“神经营销”是有前途的。故选B。

Whenever 12-year-old Kelly thought of her school, she was unhappy. The boys in her class always made fun of her “funny” walk, saying she was an ugly girl.
Kelly’s parent took her to the hospital for examination. It turned out that her walk was a sign of something far more serious. A doctor said that she suffered from scoliosis (脊柱侧弯) and needed an operation.
The operation was carried out one week later. Following the operation, Kelly had to lie flat on her back in the Children’s Hospital, wrapped in cast (石膏). She could do almost nothing but stare at the ceiling. She turned her eyes to one side and saw the dozen girls in her ward (病房), imagining they were all prettier than she would ever be.
One thing Kelly looked forward to each day was a visit from her parents. But that day Kelly didn’t even have that. A rainstorm had flooded out the roads, and Kelly was stuck, alone and hidden away from the world.
Luckily, the TV was on. When Kelly’s beloved TV icon (偶像) Ms. Robbins appeared on the screen, her eyes lit up. She and her whole family admired Ms. Robbins so much not only because of her excellent singing skills but also her devotion to charity. Ms. Robbins was always reported to make her efforts to help those in need, especially children. Now she was singing her hit song “Go for happiness”. When Ms. Robbins smiled through the TV screen, Kelly believed she was looking right at her, which filled Kelly’s heart with warmth and power. For a moment, Kelly even forgot about those boys who called her an ugly girl.
Noises in the doorway caught her attention. Some special person arrived for a visit. Unbelievable! It was Ms. Robbins!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Kelly watched her say “hello” to the girl in the bed nearest the door.

Kelly could hardly believe her ears because almost nobody except her parents had ever called her that.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Kelly watched her say “hello” to the girl in the bed nearest the door. Ms. Robbins was nice to everyone. She moved through the room, stopping at every bedside for a short exchange. Then she made her way to Kelly. She looked down at Kelly and smiled. A genuine smile, like the one Kelly had seen on the TV. Kelly could happily feel that Ms. Robbins didn’t care that she wasn’t pretty or laugh at her cast. Then Ms. Robbins reached out and lightly touched Kelly’s arm, saying, “What a pretty girl!”
Kelly could hardly believe her ears because almost nobody except her parents had ever called her that. Then she heard Ms. Robbins add, “Being strong-willed makes you prettier!” Ms. Robbins’ words really touched little Kelly. Kelly couldn’t know for sure whether Ms. Robbins changed the life of other children in the ward in the way that she changed Kelly. But she did know that by the time her cast came off, she reentered the world with a different mindset. She was no longer disturbed by the boys at school, not caring what those boys said about her. She became a confident and positive girl!

C. He was an excellent self-taught learner. D. He read on horseback in order to escape work.
5. Which of the following contributed the most to Lincoln’s achievement?
A. Reading widely. B. Creating his own business.
C. Traveling around the world. D. Being supported by his family.
6. What happened to the book Lincoln borrowed from Crawford?
A. It was stolen by a farmer. B. It was burned by a circle fire.
C. It was damaged in a rainstorm. D. It was lost and never to be found.
7. Which of the following can best describe Lincoln according to the last paragraph?
A. Proud and helpful. B. Honest and determined.
C. Creative and curious. D. Intelligent and competitive.

It was Ms. Robbins!
