On a weekday afternoon some years ago, I was sitting alone in my apartment when someone knocked on the door. As I wasn’t expecting a visitor, I assumed it was the postman.
“Yes?”
“Hello, sir. I work for the television show Law & Order. We’re seeking a location for some scenes, and I wonder if you might be willing to let me see your apartment.”
I live on a lovely block in a historic district, so quite a bit of filming does take place in my neighborhood, but it certainly never occurred to me that someone might consider my simple home as a location for a TV show.
As he looked around, my mind began to race, thinking of what it might mean if my apartment was chosen for filming.
I had been out of work for a few months. I’d once read that TV shows and movies paid generously to use private homes for filming. That money would certainly be useful, as my unemployment insurance was winding down.
My daydream suddenly ended when my visitor received a call. After chatting quietly for a few moments, he turned to me and said, “I’m sorry. My colleague found an apartment down the street that suits our purposes, and it looks as if we’ll be filming there.”
Was I disappointed? Yes, of course, but I also felt oddly cheered by the near miss. I was reminded that blessings (祝福) are often given just when they’re needed most. In this case, the blessing wasn’t that I would be paid for the use of my apartment. It was being reminded that blessings large and small wait for us, though we can’t always guess when or where they will present themselves. But they are there for us, and we must try very hard to remain open to receiving them.
1. How did the author feel at the man’s request?
A. Satisfied. B. Confused. C. Annoyed. D. Surprised.
2. What was the author doing when the visitor looked around?
A. Chatting on the phone. B. Worrying about his job.
C. Imagining financial relief. D. Considering the value of the apartment.
3. What can we learn from the text?
A. Nothing is more important than money. B. Missing a step can ruin a lifetime.
C It’s wise to find the good in the unexpected. D. All things are difficult before they are easy.
B
For everyone whose relationship with mathematics is broken, Jo Boaler, a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education, has ideas for repairing it.
Most students have only ever experienced what she calls narrow mathematics. In this world of mathematics, questions have one valued method and one answer. Students need to follow a set of procedures at speed. When blindly memorizing math facts, they’re not developing number sense. They don’t learn how to use numbers flexibly in different situations. For most of them, mathematics is an almost completely symbolic experience. It’s a big part of why we have a country of mathematics failure and fear.
In her new book, Boaler argues that mathematics should be taught in more visual (可视的) ways. Students should be invited to see mathematical ideas not only as numbers but also as words, visuals, physical representations, tables, models and movements.
In her book she mentioned an activity she did with middle-school students in a summer camp where students were shown an image of a4 x4 x 4 cm cube (立方体) made up of smaller1 cm cubes. The larger cube was dipped (蘸) into a can of blue paint, and she asked, if they could take apart the little cubes, how many sides would be painted blue? To solve it, she gave the students sugar cubes and had them physically build a larger 4x 4 x 4 cube.
A year later, she asked one student, Jed, how the camp had impacted him. Jed told her that he was in advanced math class, but he still remembered that sugar cube — what it looked like and felt like — and he had used the memory to solve many questions. He had built a mental representation of a cube.
Some people may consider physical representations more suitable for younger kids, but Boaler wrote at last, “Look at those Tesla engineers. They’re drawing, they’re building models, and nobody says that’s basic mathematics.”
4. What is the result of narrow mathematics?
A. Worry and lack of success. B. Good memory and performance.
C. Fear of teachers and the school. D. Deep understanding of numbers.
5. What is Boaler’s idea about mathematics?
A. To teach numbers like words. B. To connect it to the real world.
C. To bring it to summer camps. D. To learn it out of the classroom.
6. Why are Tesla engineers mentioned?
A. To praise the company. B. To show their creativity.
C. To correct people’s idea. D. To set examples to younger kids.

Storytelling is an important way that people pass down knowledge and culture. Stories can be passed along in many ways, including speaking, writing, and movement.
Hula is a type of dance, and it is also a form of storytelling. It has been a part of Hawaiian storytelling traditions for generations. Many years ago, Hawaiians did not have a written language. To pass down knowledge, they shared chants (吟唱) that told stories of important events. They danced hula to these chants. Through hula, Hawaiians recorded Hawaiian history.
There are two main types of hula. Ancient hula or hula kahiko, is the oldest form of the dance. Hula kahiko often celebrates Hawaiian gods or chiefs. It also tells stories about important Hawaiian figures in history. Its beat is slow and the movements are graceful. Musicians keep that beat for the dancers with bamboo sticks and drums. A modern form of hula, hula auana, is danced to songs and, often, faster beat. Musicians play the ukulele and guitar in this type of hula. Unlike hula kahiko, hula auana is not performed as a part of a religious ceremony. It's often more relaxed but it also carries significant cultural and education values. Both types of hula are popular in Hawaii today. Masters train students at hula schools, asking them to draw inspiration from nature.
In hula, each movement has a meaning, much like words in a story. Hula dancers use their hands, feet, and hips to tell these stories. One basic hula step is called the kaholo. To perform this step, dancers lower their knees deeply. They move their hips from side to side to the beat. This move can represent a person going on a journey. Other hula steps express nature or weather. For example, in one step, a dancer lifts their hands up, and then they move their fingers as they bring their hands down. This movement represents rain. Through various movements, hula dancers can communicate meanings and share important stories with their community.
7. Why did Hawaiians create hula?
A. To inspire young generations. B. To record their past.
C. To improve their language. D. To have fun.
8. Which is different between the two types of hula?
A. Music. B. Popularity.
C. Educational role. D. Use of nature.
9. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Hula communicates well. B. Hula needs more movements.
C. Hula movements are easy. D. Hula can express any natural phenomenon.
10. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to dance hula. B. Hawaiian way of storytelling.
C. Where hula began. D. Modern Hawaiian celebration.

With our communities getting smaller and smaller, and our dependence on others becoming greater, it can be really easy to feel alone. ____15____ When you feel like no one cares, text someone who you love. Sumiko worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. They made their living by selling the produce from their garden at the market. Each day, Sumiko carefully watered plants and pretended they were beautiful chrysanthemums (菊花), like Mrs. Higaki’s prize flowers. In her heart, she wanted to grow chrysanthemums.
“Foolish girl!” her mother lectured. “Flowers can’t be eaten!”
“But Mum, people buy flowers.”
“City people. No one in our poor village wastes money.”
Sumiko knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs. Higaki. Every year she won first prize at the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival. Many people whispered that Mrs. Higaki used magic to grow her chrysanthemums. How else could she win first prize twenty years in a row?
Sumiko admired Mrs. Higaki. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Higaki, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But chrysanthemums were expensive to start, and Sumiko could only dream about growing them.
One day, Sumiko visited Mrs. Higaki’s garden.“Mrs. Higaki, I wish I could grow beautiful chrysanthemums and win a prize like you,” said Sumiko.
“You! Win a prize growing flowers?”Mrs. Higaki laughed. “Do you know what’s required to grow such flowers? The secret to growing them has been passed down to me from past generations of my family. And you-a child-believe you can compete against me? Stick to vegetables, child. Leave flowers to those who know the secret of flowers.”
Mrs. Higaki returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Sumiko’s face. Then she pulled up a plant.
“What’s that?” Sumiko asked.
“A plant in poor condition -a waste of my time,”Mrs. Higaki said, throwing the plant into the field beside the garden.

【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C

Ancient hula, or hula kahiko, is the oldest form of the dance.
8 Which is different between the two types of hula?
A. Music. B. Popularity.
C. Educational role. D. Use of nature.
9. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Hula communicates well. B. Hula needs more movements.
C. Hula movements are easy. D. Hula can express any natural phenomenon.
10. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to dance hula. B. Hawaiian way of storytelling.
C. Where hula began. D. Modern Hawaiian celebration.

第二节 (共5 小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We live in a culture that encourages us to be strong and independent, but is it possible that we have gone too far?
Over-independence is the belief that you are the only person you can depend on. ___11___ For example, you have depended on someone in the past and been let down, so, as a result, you have a “if you want something done, you have to do it yourself” mind.
___12___ One day, I had just come back from a funeral(葬礼) when a friend called me to see how I was. Being so used to being very over-independent at that point, I said he didn't need to worry. Hours later, he turned up at my door simply saying, “I thought you might want a hug.” He was right. ____13____
What I ignored was that the great pressure I put on myself to do everything alone was blocking me from forming real and close connections, because in order to ask for help, you need to trust others and let them in.
___14___ But living a life where you don't give anyone a chance to be there for you is extremely lonely, and not the solution. Humans are sociable creatures. With our communities getting smaller and smaller, and our dependence on others becoming greater, it can be really easy to feel alone. ____15____ When you feel like no one cares, text someone who you love. The more you give them a roadmap on how to help you, the more they can. So feel free to ask someone for support, and it is so worth it.
A. I felt the opposite.
B. I used to be the same.
C. He taught me to ask for what I want.
D. It is often born out of a painful experience.
E. Learning how to ask for help is rather hard.
F. Letting people in gives them possibility to hurt you.
G The way we deal with this is by reaching out anyway.
【答案】11. D 12. B 13. C 14. F 15. G

【15题详解】
根据上文“With our communities getting smaller and smaller, and our dependence on others becoming greater, it can be really easy to feel alone.”(随着我们的社区越来越小,我们对他人的依赖越来越大,我们很容易感到孤独。)根据下文“When you feel like no one cares, text someone who you love.”(当你觉得没人在乎的时候,给你爱的人发短信。)可知,选项承接上下文说明感到孤独时应该怎么办。reaching out呼应text someone who you love。故 G 选 项“我们处理这件事的方法就是寻求帮助”切题。故选G项。

注意:

【答案】 Sumiko smiled before she had an idea. She asked for Higaki’s permission to have that plant, dashed back home, and grew it behind the cottage. She leaned close to the hanging leaves and whispered, “Grow, little flower. You don’t have to win a prize. Just grow.” She took care of her plant every morning and evening.“You are my beautiful plant,”Amy would sing softly, as she weeded and watered it.“Someday, you will bloom prettier than any flower at the festival.”Each time Amy visited her little plant, it looked greener and taller. Time seemed to fly by as the festival neared.
Sumiko got up early on the morning of the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival. When Amy visited her plant again, she screamed with delight. Her plant was in full bloom! It was the most beautiful rainbow chrysanthemums Amy had ever seen. Mrs. Higaki, who was passing by with flowers for the festival, stopped to see what the excitement was. Her mouth dropped open seeing the brilliant chrysanthemums. She never thought that the weak plant she threw away should have grown to be so remarkable. “It’s plain to see you will win a prize this year.” Mrs. Higaki sighed. And off they went to the festival. Finally, Amy's chrysanthemums won first prize as Mrs. Higaki had predicted.
