This morning, something was wrong with the dog. He wouldn’t play with my son, and he appeared absent-minded. He was running back and forth between the two office windows. “He must hear a bird outside,” I explained, urging my son to get his backpack together.
As we hurried to the car, my son stopped in his tracks. “Mama, do you hear that?”
I was too busy to acknowledge anything, although I did hear a strange sound.
“We’re late! Get in the car!” I said, and my son did so unwillingly.
I bent over to help him with his seatbelt and felt something soft on the top of my foot. I jumped!
There was a brown cat standing behind me. It was making that strange sound.
“What is it, Mama?” My son lifted himself up to get a better look.
The cat approached me, touching my foot again, its meows weak but very lasting.
“Aww, hey there, little fella.” I bent to give it a pat as the meows turned to purrs. As the grateful cat moved against my leg, I was shocked at what I saw next.
At first, it didn’t seem abnormal, but as I looked closer, I realized the cat’s back-right leg was severely injured and began to rot (腐烂). This poor cat with brilliant green eyes was begging for my help!
I told my son to stay in the car and quickly called my mom. She knew of a nearby animal clinic, so I placed the injured cat in our pet carrier and rushed to the vet (兽医).
The vet said that nothing could be done even though I said I would pay whatever it cost. I quickly loaded my son and the cat back into the car. I knew time was of the essence. The receptionist ran out to my car. “Take him to VCA Animal Hospital!” she called out with her cell phone up to her ear. “I’m calling them now to say you’re coming!” 注意:

“Dreadful !” Aliya exclaimed in frustration, her gaze locked onto the disappointing grades in her latest math exam. It felt like failure had woven itself into the fabric of her existence, relentlessly mocking her despite her diligent efforts. With a swift motion, she stuffed the paper deep into her bag, hoping to evade any snide remarks from her classmates.
Just as she discreetly wiped away her tears with the back of her hand, her teacher, Mrs. Leena, caught sight of her distress. Approaching Aliya’s desk with a gentle demeanor, she requested to speak with her during the break.
Curious yet apprehensive, Aliya found herself anxiously awaiting the lunch bell. When it finally chimed, she headed to Mrs. Leena’s side. Upon seeing her, the teacher beckoned her to take a seat beside her, studying Aliya’s troubled expression with concern.
Clearing her throat with a reassuring smile, Mrs. Leena began, “You appear troubled, Aliya. I have a hunch about what’s weighing on your mind. If you’re willing, perhaps we can find a way through this together.”
Confused, Aliya replied, “Ma’am, ever since the term started, I’ve been grappling with math. No matter how much effort I put in, success remains elusive. It’s disheartening,” she confessed, her voice tinged with sadness.
Mrs. Leena reassured her, “There’s no need to be so downcast, my dear. With dedication, resolve, and perseverance—the trifecta of success—you’ll progress and triumph. The initial step is often the toughest, but once you commit to pushing forward without giving up, victory awaits. Now, gather your strength, and let’s tackle this challenge head-on.”
Taking her teacher’s words to heart, Aliya embarked on a rigorous journey, diligently adhering to Mrs. Leena’s guidance. By the time the finals approached, she had meticulously reviewed her math textbook, feeling thoroughly prepared and confident.

Passage3.【2024·江苏南京·模拟预测】
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The summer finally came. That afternoon, the hot sun was shining brightly, making the tree leaves almost burn and making people’s bodies seem to be on fire. Having nothing interesting to do at home, I decided to go to the pool to enjoy the coolness instead of going swimming. The reason was simple — I still couldn’t swim. I was impatient, and I always failed to do something and suffered losses. So the swimming lesson was put off again and again.
Upon arriving at the gym’s pool, I was greeted by a lively scene. Some people just jumped into the water, with hands entering first and the body following in a smooth motion. Some were kicking their legs rhythmically below the surface. All were happy. That was infectious, and I couldn’t help but feel deep admiration. Then I made a decision!
Taking a deep breath, I followed their example, closing my eyes and jumping into the “vast water” with a plop (扑通声).
At this moment, my head was pointing to the ground and my feet to the sky. When I “plopped” to the bottom, my whole body was swinging hard and my hands and feet lost their ability to feel. I just felt water rushing towards me, and my nose was filled with water. It was very terrible. Suddenly, I was hit by something. I struggled out of the light blue water bit by bit as if being dragged.
“That’s horrible!” I shouted 1oudly, and while I was complaining, I suddenly realized that I couldn’t swim in the first place, so why should I be shocked? Just when I decided to stay away from water, someone gently patted my shoulder and said, “Don’t be discouraged, little girl. Look, swimming requires...” The lady introduced herself as Allison. She gave me a “1ecture” on how to hold my breath, how to kick gently, and how to start with floating with the help of a swimming ring, being patient while giving me a demonstration.

On April 8, Mike Krugman, 74, had let his dog Riley out for a predinner walk on his 36-acre property. Krugman got its kibble (狗粮) ready, waiting for it. Sometimes Riley liked to go down to the barn and barked at the horses. When Krugman went to the barn and couldn’t find the dog, he became concerned and decided to take a ride around the property on his ATV. The five-foot fence that surrounds his property was buried in snow, leaving Krugman to wonder whether Riley climbed on the snow and walked over the top of the fence.
There was another possibility Krugman was worried about. Krugman thought that maybe Riley had gone looking for Rose, his wife, who had died of a heart condition in January. She and Riley, who would sleep on her pillow every night, were extremely close. “Then when Rose passed away, it hid behind the bed for several days,” Krugman said. “You could tell it really missed her.”
After Riley went missing, Krugman began to look for it. He tried to find Riley’s tracks in the snow but failed.
Zach Hackett, on May 14, was up 12,000 feet hiking on a mountain in Colorado when he thought he heard a faint yip from a dog. As he walked through a clearing, he saw it: a black and white Shetland sheepdog, visibly shivering behind some fallen pine trees. “Hey buddy,” he called out, then whistled, “Come here! Do you want a treat?” The dog let out a pitiful groan with pain, getting stuck under tangled (乱糟糟的) branches. He was a little startled, because dogs shouldn’t have been up there so high. Hackett realized the dog was too weak to move. It was freezing cold. The dog looked like it was near death. Hackett believed what he’d heard was the dog’s last cry for help, and that if he hadn’t come along the dog would have died there. He tried to call 911 for help but there was no signal. He knew he was going to have to carry him down the mountain.

Sarah had unspeakable pain because she had to raise her children alone. But over time, she changed too much, looking skinny in the mirror, with dark bags under her eyes. She knew she had to stop burning herself out before it was too late. So she emailed her manager that she was taking an urgent day off.
It had to be the best day ever. Sarah hated instant coffee but didn’t have time for anything else. But not now. Sarah placed her favorite coffee maker on the stove and walked to the kitchen windowsill, enjoying her company when her phone rang loudly from her bedroom. “Yes?” “Hello, Sarah! How are you doing?” “Natalie? Oh, my goodness! Is this really you?” …Natalie was Sarah’s friend, but they’d lost touch after Natalie and her husband moved to Europe. Unfortunately, Sarah got so carried away by the conversation that she completely forgot about her coffee on the stove. The weather turned harsh, and strong winds blew the window curtain toward the stove, causing it to catch fire. Sarah put the phone down immediately when she smelled something burning and the smoke caused her to cough.
Sarah’s house was reduced to a pile of charred wreckage (残骸). Her neighbors looked at her pityingly and offered to shelter her until she could find a place to live. But Sarah couldn’t take their favor. She knew no one wanted to see a swarm of children at home, especially in the current economy. Sarah and her children had been dragged to a shelter in the street.
A few months later, it was Sarah’s birthday. She decided to take her children out for a good lunch and then get back to her work. But they didn’t want to and had a strange request. They blindfolded (蒙住眼睛) her, guiding her out of the house. Sarah had no clue what her children had planned for her. She knew they were heading somewhere far from the homeless shelter since they were on a bus at some point.

In the heart of the city, among the chaotic flow of people, stood a small bakery called “Sweet Serenity”. Its golden sign shone under the midday sun, inviting passersby with promises of sugary delights. And at the center of it was Sarah, the owner of Sweet Serenity. With flour-dusted cheeks and a warm smile, she greeted customers like old friends.
Everything seemed cheerful and peaceful, but behind this, Sarah was struggling to keep her bakery running. Rent was due, and supplies and sales were all declining. Worse still, she heard about a big company’s plan to enter the neighborhood and undoubtedly, the bakery couldn’t compete with the big chains moving in. The future of Sweet Serenity really hung in the balance.
Over the next few weeks, Sarah poured all her energy into Sweet Serenity. She launched a social media campaign and hosted baking classes, trying to bringing the bakery back to life. Hard as she worked, business remained sliding.
As the days passed, Sarah watched helplessly as boxes were packed and shelves emptied. Customers came by to offer their comfort, but their sympathy only deepened her sense of defeat. On the eve of Sweet Serenity’s closure, Sarah sat alone in the empty bakery, tears streaming down her face. She had poured her heart and soul into this place, only to see it slip away. “How could I possibly find a solution to save my bakery? Is there anyone who can give me a hand?” she thought to herself.
But then, a cheerful sound caught her ear. It was the sound of laughter and music floating in from the street outside. Curious, Sarah looked through the window to see a crowd gathering around a food truck parking across the street.
It was a new addition to the neighborhood, a mobile bakery called “The Rolling Oven”. The owner, a young woman named Mia, was handing out samples of her tasty cupcakes and engaging customers with her infectious enthusiasm. 注意:

Kevin and I were friends in the elementary school. As honor students, both of us sat in the front of the class, but in opposite sides. He was the smartest boy I’d ever known, who almost always got straight A’s in study. Actually, I was second only to him. Part of me wanted to hate him, but I couldn’t. After all, we were close companions. Instead, I envied him and longed with all my heart to be just like him.
Mrs. Becker, our teacher, was a patient, kind old lady. She would flash a pleasant smile, when the class got into an argument, and patiently guide us toward the correct answer. Last week, Mrs. Becker, put a big circle on the blackboard and said it was a pizza pie. “David,” she said to me, “If I were to divide the pizza, would you like one-third or one-tenth?”. Ten is the bigger number, so that’s what I picked. At that moment, Kevin started waving his hand in the air, shouting that he chose one-third. Mrs. Becker drew lines on the circle, showing that Kevin’s piece of the pie was bigger than mine. “David’s gonna get hungry,” Kevin joked. Then the whole class was laughing. My expression changed from a half smile, to a half frown, to one hundred percent unhappy face.
With a mixture of bitterness and envy slipping into my heart, I began to argue with him on purpose during the rest of class. Thus, a heated argument unavoidably broke out when a controversial topic appeared. After hearing our separate statements patiently, Mrs. Becker brought us up to the front of the class and placed Kevin on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could clearly see that it was black. She asked Kevin what color the object was. “White,” he answered. I couldn’t believe he said the object was white, when it was obviously black!

When we are little kids, birthday parties are momentous occasions. They are our time to shine, and we love everything about them: the balloons, the games, the cake, the gifts, and so on.
After reading cool stories about police officers solving mysteries, Allen Miller thought the police were awesome, hoping to become one of them! So, when he had to choose a theme for his seventh birthday party—he went with his favorite: the police! And all he wanted for his birthday party was a model police car. He excitedly invited some of his friends and anxiously awaited the day. Unfortunately, none of them could make it to the party due to various reasons,
Allen’s mom Rachel wrestled with the challenging decision: should she cancel the party and save Allen the embarrassment of an empty party room? He had been looking forward to the party and talking about it daily, so it would break his heart to cancel it.
Officer Frank Smith, who had already planned with Rachel and agreed to show up at the party, heard from Rachel that it might be canceled due to low attendance. That’s when he decided to save the day—he is a police officer after all! His duty is to serve and protect, and he decided to protect Allen from having a bad day, and serve him the most amazing seventh birthday party! Officer Smith got the whole local police to join in. “We like to be involved in our community. It’s not just about enforcing (执行) the law. We like to be there in the good times as well,” he explained to Rachel.
On the day of Allen’s party, Officer Smith picked up Rachel and Allen in his police car. The boy didn’t know where they were going, but was excited. They stopped at Town Hall, and officer Smith led them into the meeting room where a group of policemen were waiting to wish Allen a happy birthday.

“Not again!” Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came to Aliya’s desk and, in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be, Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious. I think I know what’s bothering you. If you allow me I think together we may come up with a good solution.”
With a puzzled look, she said, “Well ma’am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset,” she said sadly.
“You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena. “With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up, you will be successful, my dear. Come on, gather yourself and let’s work on it together.”

Last weekend, I was standing at the finish line of the St. Francis Franny Flyer 5K (五公里赛) route, waiting for my nine-year-old son Kade to pass by.
Kade, though a fourth-grader, was already an experienced runner. He had been a part of a cross-country club since he was six years old. He had loved to run for as long as he could remember. He had been working hard to improve his endurance and running skills as he was determined to be a professional runner and compete in national and international races when he was older.
There were two St. Francis Franny Flyer races happening at the same time that day. The 5K race weaved through neighborhoods, from the church to Pinecone Road and back while the 10K followed the same route but extended north on Pinecone Road. Race volunteers were available on Pinecone Road to show runners the way, and there were also signs directing the two different courses.
I signed Kade up for the 5K race as a way to train him for the Junior Olympics. He had never run a 10K, not even in training, so the 10K race was never an option.
Kade was pretty fast and he set a 5K record for his age group at last year’s race, so I was surprised to see slower runners crossing the finish line before him. “This is weird. He should be ahead of them. He might just be having a bad race,” I thought to myself. But as the minutes passed, my worry intensified. My heart raced at the thought that Kade might be lost or injured.
Anxious and worried, I drove along the 5K race route in search of Kade, but he was nowhere to be found. A surge of fear and despair overwhelmed me, causing a flood of tears to pour down my face. I turned to race officials and volunteers for help, and people started looking for him.

【答案】参考范文
Upon arrival, the cat was immediately taken to surgery. I watched as its brilliant green eyes looked at me through the pet carrier, as it cried goodbye. The surgeon came in as I filled out the paperwork. “He’s in really bad shape. Chances are, he probably won’t make it.” The surgeon explained that the cat had been in this condition for several days. I was updated later that night: The surgery was over and the cat was in recovery. After a few more days, we were invited to visit the hospital and the surgeon met us in the waiting room.
The surgeon told us, “Upon seeing him, you might be a little surprised, shocked even.” Informed that the cat would only have three legs, astonished as we were, we determined that we could give him as much love as possible. We walked into the exam room to see our recovering cat and I gasped while my son broke into laughter. It was the cutest snow-white cat we had ever seen! “Our cat was brown. A dark chocolate color!” “Your kitty was dirty,” the surgeon said with a laugh. I recognized those brilliant green eyes. And now the meowing was loud and proud. Our sweet and thankful cat was lightning fast despite missing one leg. He lived a happy life with us and was a reminder that we are only as limited as we allow ourselves to be.

As the day drew to a close, I still could not swim very well.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Version 1:
“Why not try one more time?” said Allison. Her words echoed in my mind, and I found myself nodding in agreement. After all, I had come here with a purpose — to learn how to swim. So why give up now? With renewed determination, I took a deep breath and prepared to give it another go. This time, I focused on her instructions and tried to mimic her movements as closely as possible. Surprisingly, I was able to stay afloat for a few seconds longer than before. Progress, however small, was still progress.
As the day drew to a close, I still could not swim very well. But I didn’t feel defeated or discouraged. Instead, I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride. After all, I had taken the first step towards overcoming my fear of water and learning a new skill. And even though I wasn’t quite there yet, I knew that with practice and patience, I would eventually get it. Besides, today had been more than just about learning how to swim. It had also been about finding the courage to face my fears and trying something new. And for that, I was grateful to Allison and the encouragement she had given me.
Version 2:
“Why not try one more time?” said Allison. She smiled at me encouragingly, her eyes filled with warmth and confidence. “You can do it, girl. I know it seems scary, but with the right techniques and some practice, you’ll be swimming like a fish in no time.” She handed me a swimming ring and gently guided me back to the shallow end of the pool. Together, we began the slow process of teaching me to float and then, eventually, to swim.
As the day drew to a close, I still could not swim very well. But I had made progress, and that was what mattered. I could now float comfortably with the help of the swimming ring, and my kicks were becoming more coordinated. Allison praised me for my efforts and told me to keep practicing. She knew that with time and dedication, I would overcome my fears and learn to swim. And so, with a renewed sense of determination, I bid farewell to the pool that day, knowing that my journey to becoming a confident swimmer had just begun.

【答案】【One possible version】
He took action immediately. Carefully lifting the dog into his arms, Hackett felt its bones through its thin fur. The dog whined softly, but didn’t resist. Hackett began the arduous journey down the mountain. Every step was deliberate, mindful of the rocky ground and the dog’s fragile state. He spoke soothingly to the dog, hoping his voice would provide some comfort. Hours later, they finally arrived at an animal hospital where Riley received immediate treatment. Hackett stayed by its side and noticed a tag peeking out of the fur. Hackett dialed the telephone number on the tag around the dog’s neck. A weary voice answered. On the phone, Hackett told the man he found a Shetland sheepdog in distress up in the mountains. The tag of the dog had the telephone number on it. The man on the other end gasped in amazement and asked for Hackett’s location. Then it was not long before Mike Krugman, overwhelmed with gratitude, was reunited with Riley. “Mr. Hackett, you’ve brought back a part of our family.” Krugman’s voice choked. Riley barked happily, his eyes bright once more, ready to return home and continue his walks around the property, this time under Krugman’s watchful eye.

【答案】
As Sarah did remove the blindfold, her hands went to her mouth in shock. She couldn’t believe her children had brought her to the same place where her house had been engulfed in flames months ago. But now, a new, beautiful home stood before them. For a moment, Sarah felt like her mind was playing tricks on her. She even pinched herself to check if it was all real, and IT WAS! Right then, Sarah saw her neighbors pouring out of their houses, rushing toward her and her children, all singing “Happy Birthday” to her. Sarah burst into tears as she understood everything.
Her neighbors had actually built her a new home. They took Sarah’s old house’s design as a basis and rebuilt it with safety installations done. When the house was finally complete, they couldn’t contact her because she wouldn’t answer their calls. So they decided to surprise her by roping her children into their birthday party plan! “Oh god…” Sarah sobbed. “How…How am I supposed to thank you all? I will pay you back. I assure you!” A couple of days later, Sarah moved into the house with her kids and the entire neighborhood became like a big, loving family who shared their joys and sorrows.

Then, Mrs. Becker asked us what the color of the object was, after we changed places.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Another argument started between us, but this time about the color of the object. The tension in the classroom was evident as we stood on opposite sides of the teacher's desk, both convinced of our own perception. I even looked at him defiantly, sneering. In contrast, Kevin seemed unaffected by my aggressive expression, his confidence was anything but shaken. The class watched us with interest as we argued, occasionally bursting into laughter. Mrs. Becker quieted the unrest, then telling me to go where Kevin was standing and Kevin to stand in my previous place.
Then, Mrs. Becker asked us what the color of the object was, after we changed places. Mrs. Becker's patient gaze bore into us, waiting for our response. Not until then did both of us realize that it was an object with two differently colored sides. From Kevin's viewpoint, it was white while from mine it was black. Reflecting on the argument, I regretted deeply for being mean. Making sincere apologies to each other, we came to terms. It dawned on me that the essence of friendship is a profound connection on the basis of mutual compassion and understanding.

【答案】There, a party was waiting for him. The moment Allen stepped inside, a chorus of “Happy Birthday” filled the meeting room, and he found himself surrounded by lots of police officers holding balloons. Officer Smith introduced him to all the officers, who gave him high fives. Allen was thrilled, and his eyes sparkled with excitement as he looked at the grand police-themed cake. As Allen cut into the cake with the help of his mom, the room erupted into cheers and laughter, adding to the joyful atmosphere.
After they enjoyed the cake, officer Smith took out a gift bag. “It’s for you.” He presented the delicately wrapped parcel to Allen, who was stunned by the surprise. “Wow, a model police car! It looks exactly like the one we came here in! Thank you!” Officer Smith smiled, “Anytime, Allen.” Allen hugged Officer Smith and thanked him again for making the otherwise crushing disappointment his time to shine. It was the local heroes who helped by being part of the community and inspiring the young soul in small but effective ways.

From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice. By the time the final exams drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well-prepared.

【答案】On the exam day, a fear of failure upset her stomach. Aliya's heart raced as she sat down in front of the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to recall the encouragement from Mrs. Leena. As she began the test, the questions seemed difficult at first, but she pushed through, step by step, using the strategies she had learned. With each question she completed, her confidence grew. By the end of the exam, Aliya felt a sense of accomplishment, not because she was sure she had aced it, but because she had faced her fears and given it her all.
She passed her math exam with an unbelievable A grade on her report card. The moment she saw the grade, tears of joy welled up in her eyes. It wasn't just a grade. It was a testament to her hard work, her teacher's unwavering support, and the resilience she had found within herself. Aliya left the room with her head held high, no longer the student who dreaded math, but a young woman who had conquered her fears and believed in her abilities.

Later, a volunteer told me he had spotted Kade on the 10K course. Knowing that he was safe, I let out a sigh of relief. Despite hearing that Kade seemed to be running well, worry hang over me as I realized he had taken a wrong turn and was now running a longer and more challenging race than he had ever trained for I couldn’t help but pace back and for that the finish line, anxiously searching for any sign of my son. With every runner approaching, my heart leaped in hope, only to sink in disappointment when it wasn’t him.
Finally, Kade appeared and crossed the finish line. Relief washed over me at the sight of his face. I hugged him tightly, overwhelmed with pride for his courage, determination, and resilience. “What happened? Why did you end up on the 10K course?” I asked my son eagerly. “A race volunteer directed me the wrong way. I didn’t realize the mistake until I saw the 10K turnaround sign, but I didn’t want to give up halfway,” explained Kade. At that moment, I knew without doubt that he was to become a professional runner.
