Philip felt ill and had to stay in bed.David made sure to keep his grandson entertained by finding a book
they could enjoy together.
Before handing it to Philip,he decided to leaf through it and look back at the story. However, while
looking through it,he didn't expect to see another piece of his youth, this time in the form of a
photograph of him and his old friends. There were four in the picture -David,Steve,Dorothy,and
Teresa. They were neighbors and often went to the beach together. In the photo, the four of them were
playing on the sand.

Do you often have seafood like crabs? What will you do with the crab shells (after your big
seafood dinner?Scientists have a wonderful way to deal with it.They want to use a chemical found in
crab shells to make batteries(电池)greener.
"We think both the biodegradability of material,or environmental impact and the performance of
the batteries are important for a good product,"said Liangbing Hu,director of the University of
Maryland's Center for Materials Innovation.
As nowadays people care about the environment more and more and tend to use green energy and
electric cars, the batteries being used for such technology also need to be eco-friendly.But the chemicals
used in traditional batteries such as lithium-ion can take hundreds or thousands of years to break down.
These chemicals are also harmful and easy to burn.In some cases, batteries have caught fire on aircraft,
or caused fires in waste and recycling sites.
The researchers in Maryland have developed batteries that use a chemical, chitin, taken from crab
shells. This material is valuable, but usually thrown away as food waste from restaurants.Scientists
have long been researching its various applications.Through chemical processing, chitin can finally be
turned into a piece of firm gel ()which is suitable to be used for a battery.By mixing it with zinc,a
bluish-white metal increasingly used to make batteries that are cheap and safe,Hu's team was able to
create a renewable battery.
The batteries are not easy to burn and two thirds of the battery can break down in the earth in just
five months, leaving behind recyclable zinc.Antonio J Femnandez Romero,a professor of materials
science for energy production at the University of Cartagena in Spain, who was not involved in the
study, said,"A new battery that is environment-friendly and cheap,is one of the more important
products that must be developed in the coming years."
28.Why does the author ask the questions in Paragraph 1?
A.To attract readers with a taste for seafood.B.To encourage us to explore science.
C.To call on us to protect the environment.
D.To introduce the eco-friendly battery.
29.What does the underlined word"biodegradability"in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.The ability to produce electricity.
B.The ability to be transformed.
C.The ability to be broken down.
D.The ability to be folded.
30.What can we infer from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4?
A.The material from crab shells is collected by restaurants
B.Chitin has been applied to many fields in different industries.
C.Traditional batteries are neither safe nor environment-friendly.
D.Chitin is valuable because crabs are not cheap in the restaurants.
31.What's Romero's attitude towards the new battery's future?
A.Positive.
B.Negative.
C.Objective.
D.Uncertain.

common reactions seem to be,"Oh no!They're going to see everything I post and start writing

have a number of health benefits for the elderly.Nowadays families are more geographically distant
than ever before, and social media is a great way to connect with faraway relatives. While nothing
replaces face-to-face communication, social media is a great way to keep in touch with family members.
Another benefit is that elderly people can make new friends who have similar interests,or find long-lost
friends from childhood. Finally, social media use can be very educational.Looking through Facebook
news is a great way to stay informed and keep up to date with local and global events.
Have your grandparents had a social media account yet?Have they asked you to help them create
one,but you didn't bother?Perhaps you should make the effort because it may affect their quality of
life.

Dear Chris,
I hope this email finds you well. I’m excited to share that I’m participating in our school’s
Campus Cultural and Creative Design Competition.
Aiming to create a unique piece that showcases the beauty and depth of Chinese culture
while remaining contemporary and appealing, I intend to design a stylish bag made from materials
of high technology, which are light and soft and impossible to become wrinkled when folded.
Patterns of nine different dragons are designed to be printed on both sides of the fancy bag to
symbolizing Chinese culture. Since you’re always so insightful and imaginative with design ideas,
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Looking forward to your feedback!
Best regards,
Li Hua

I knew I couldn’t leave it alone on the street. Without hesitation, I decided to take it back to
its yard. As I jogged along the scenic trail, the adorable puppy trotted alongside me, its tail
wagging with an almost manic excitement. We were quite a good pair, I, in my running gear,
sweat pouring down my face, and the puppy, with its floppy ears flapping in the gentle breeze,
tongue sticking out. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation, feeling a sense of
pure joy that was both unexpected and deeply satisfying. The puppy seemed to sense my good
humor, barking happily and looking up at me with eyes that sparkled with mischief and love.
Together, we jogged on, a mismatched but harmonious pair, enjoying the beauty of the day and
each other's companionship.
Eventually, we arrived at the yard. I gently placed the puppy inside. It immediately ran over
to my neighbor grandma who was just coming out of her house, tail wagging furiously. The
woman looked surprised to see us, but she smiled gratefully when I explained what had happened.
“Thank you so much for bringing him back,” she said, scratching the puppy’s head. “He’s a bit of
an escape artist.” I waved goodbye and continued on my way home, feeling a sense of
accomplishment and happiness. My morning jog had taken an unexpected turn, but it had ended
on a sweet note. As I walked through my door, I couldn’t help but think that maybe today would
be a good day after all.

M: Shall we go to see a film tonight?
W: I’d like to, but I think it is more worthwhile learning practical skills from my father at home.
Text 2
M: Well now, before we order, let’s agree first that we each pay our own bill.
W: OK, I agree.
M: And what do you say, Betty and Steven?
Text 3
W: I’ve come to this Chinese restaurant many times. I like sweet-and-sour fish, fried noodles…
And the mushroom soup here is delicious.
M: You’re really a big fan of Chinese food. Well, you do the ordering.
Text 4
W: I’ve read the comment on this movie. I must say that I completely disagree with the writer’s
dislike of the work.
M: I read it, too. And I am in favor of his opinion.
Text 5
M: Did you stay with your parents at the weekend?
W: No, I did some walking up in Scotland.
M: Did you go by yourself?
W: No, I was going to go with my cousin Dave, but I went with my classmate Debbie instead.
Text 6
W: Wow, your backpack is heavy. What do you have in there?
M: Well, I have five books for all my classes. I also have ten pencils in my pencil case. I have a
ruler and two or three erasers. And I have my big dictionary.
W: That's a lot to bring around with you! Does your back hurt?
M: It does, but I'm used to it. I need to have all of my things with me for class.

M: Come in, come in!
W: Hi, Gary. What happened? I was waiting for you at the theater. Why didn’t you meet me
there?
M: I thought we were supposed to meet at my house.
W: Didn’t you know the movie starts at 7:00? We were going to meet at the theater at 6:50. It
doesn’t make sense to meet here.
M: I’m sorry. We must have misunderstood each other.
W: Why don’t you try to be clearer next time?
M: You’re right. I am sorry. Let’s just go and watch the movie.[
W: It’s okay. I don’t want to go now. We’ve already missed ten minutes of the movie. I don’t
want to see it without watching the beginning. Let’s go to the shopping mall instead.
Text 8
M: I’m worried about our trip to Paris next week.
W: Why?
M: There have been heavy rains that have lifted the Seine river to about 20 feet, its highest level
since 1982. It actually reached 26.2 feet in 1910, if you can believe it. It’s normally only 5 feet
high. Workers have said that the river won’t go back to its original level for another week or
two.
W: Do you think the grounds beneath the Eiffel Tower are flooded?
M: They are. I saw a photo of it.
W: We won’t even be able to walk around and see the city!
M: I think we can still walk around. We just have to bring rain boots so our feet don’t get wet or
muddy. Many buildings don’t have power, and I read that staff at the Louvre museum had to
move all the artwork to higher floors. It’s still closed to visitors.
W: I hope we can at least see the Muséed’Orsay. That’s my favorite museum in the world.
M: That’s closed, too.
W: Oh no!

M: How much is it?
W: Well it was eight hundred and twenty five dollars a month, but the price has gone down. It's
one hundred dollars cheaper than that. That's a real bargain.
M: Is it far from the station?
W: There is a bus station just outside the main gate and it's only five minutes walk from the
subway station.
M: Really? That's great. How many bedrooms does it have?
W: There are five rooms in total, two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen.
M: That's a bit big for me. Does it have any furniture?
W: There is a really nice table and two beds, but there are no chairs.
M: That's not a problem. I can bring them myself. Can I go and see the flat?
W: There are people living there at the moment, but they're leaving on Friday.
M: Okay, I can meet you there on Saturday.
W: Monday is better for me.
M: Perfect, see you then.

club hosts painting nights and trips to the local museum. And the music club goes to see shows at
the concert hall and don't forget about the school newspaper for all the writers out there. We pass
out the paper every week for free on campus. Read it to keep up with all of the school news and
activities that I announced. I strongly suggest that you join a student organization. It is an easy
way to make good friends and have fun. Please consider joining one of these groups today.
