For most graduating students, the college-admission season, usually in July and August, is a nervous time that is often described as a life-changing moment.
An anxious 18-year-old Peng Lanxi got his admission letter from Hunan University of Science and Technology on July 26, bringing his dream closer-making prosthetic limbs (假肢) more advanced and accessible to people like him. His mother Wang Chunmei couldn’t hold back her tears because she knew how her son had overcome the difficulties.
Peng Lanxi lost his legs in a car accident in 2005, when he was a baby. Having learned to walk using just his hands, he enjoys life as much as the teenagers around him. On his wheelchair, he plays basketball and badminton. Once a week, he goes for a 40-minute swim, and his best time for 100 meters is one minute and 15 seconds.
“I believe that obstacles (障碍) are there to be conquered. Someone says that life is like a mirror, and we get the best results when we smile at it,” Peng Lanxi says.
His story has gone viral (在网上快速传播的) on social media platform Sina Weibo, which has been viewed more than 19 million times and he won admiration from its users for his courage, determination and hard work. (2023·福建泉州·统考一模)After being driven to near extinction, wolves are back in Washington state.
Wolf 32M, called The Old Guy by wolf specialist Ben Maletzke, lived some 12 years as the patriarch (族长) of the Teanaway Pack, kicking off the recovery of wolves in Washington. The pack’s territory was roasted by wildfire in 2014. But wolf 32M and his family remained in existence, bringing the call of the wild back for the first time in a century. These wolves are what Maletzke calls stepping stones in recovery — the animals that could help lead the way to new territory not yet repopulated by wolves.
Wolves spread to new territory to find mates and begin packs of their own. It is this pack dynamic that wildlife biologists are counting on, in time, to urge wolves into areas where they do not presently live. “We just need a couple to pick up and go,” Maletzke says.
All along, the Teanaway pack has stayed mostly out of trouble probably, helped by a lot of range riding (牧区巡逻) intended to help reduce conflicts over wolf recovery by keeping wolves away from cattle. “He is an example of wolves living and doing what they do, even around people,” Maletzke says of wolf 32M.
Story Warren, a student at the University of Montana, was just a girl when she first saw 32M’s tracks in the Teanaway River Valley — an exciting encounter that helped generate a serious interest in wildlife that now fuels her studies. To her, the return of the wolf is about more than the species; it is about recovering something even bigger: hope.
“Growing up in my generation, there is so much bad ecological news, a lot of hopelessness about climate change and loss of biodiversity and extinctions,” Warren says, “To have something as wild as wolves coming back to Washington is very encouraging for me — just to know such an amazing and powerful creature exists.”
28.Why does Maletzke call Wolf 32M family “stepping stones”?
A.They are nearly dying out. B.They are victims of wildfire.
C.They are worth protection. D.They are pioneers in wolf recovery.
29.What function does paragraph 3 serve?
A.To present a result. B.To clarify a concept.
C.To offer an explanation. D.To make a prediction
30.What can be learned from the example of the Teanaway pack?
A.Wolves face a lot of trouble.
B.Wolf recovery counts on its population.
C.Certain measures to ensure cattle safety are required.
D.Wolves should be forbidden from human residence.
31.What does Warren think of the coming back of wolves?
A.It fuels more studies on wildlife. B.It clears up bad ecological news.
C.It worsens climate change. D.It excites hope for the ecosystem.

Buying clothes for a special event, hiding the price tickets and returning them to the store the next day has for years been the method of economical shoppers. Today people are doing it just for social media.
A survey conducted by the credit card company Barclaycard revealed that nearly one in ten UK shoppers admits to buying clothing only to post photos on social media for likes. After the “outfit (装束) of the day” makes it online, they return it to the store. According to Barclaycard, the “try before you buy” policy of online retailers (零售商) where people pay for clothing they order online after they try it on at home could be contributing to this rising trend.
But the rise of social media has meant that everyone, not just superstars, expects to build and maintain a personal brand. Since we’re documenting our lives and posting them online for public judgment, getting caught in the same outfits more than once should be avoided. And the cost of all those outfits of the day adds up, which makes returning a popular way.
There are brands that tailor clothes specifically for social media shoppers, like Fashion Nova. “These are clothes made for social media: meant to be worn once, photographed and abandoned,” Allison P. Davis wrote in her report about the brand. Another favorite of the social media age is Rent the Runway, which lets customers rent designer clothing for a fee.
Some, however, are moving in the opposite direction. Groups promoting “work uniforms” have increased greatly in recent years, aiming to free women from “the annoyance of clothing decisions”. The concept of the “capsule wardrobe” (胶囊衣柜), which calls for purchasing a small number of high-quality pieces instead of lots of trendy throwaway clothes, is also making a comeback.
32. What does the survey by Barclaycard indicate?
A. Some Britons send outfits back after shoots.
B. Britons try on clothes before online purchases.
C Britons follow the fashion stars closely.
D. Some Britons over-order and return clothes.
33. What’s Fashion Nova’s special service?
A. Renting chargeable designer clothes.
B. Offering customers single-use clothes.
C. Creating unique shopping experiences.
D. Helping shoppers improve their clothing style.
34. What’s the idea behind the “capsule wardrobe”?
A. Better fewer, but better.
B. Less addition, but more enjoyment.
C. Less uniform and more freedom.
D. More choices and less annoyance.
35. What’s the purpose of the author to write the text?
A. To compare different wearing trends.
B. To criticize the “try before you buy” policy.
C. To advocate buying high-quality clothes.
D. To introduce Britain’s new wearing trend.

Both IQ and EQ are considered important to our career success. ____36____ Enter adaptability quotient(AQ), a subjective set of qualities loosely defined as the ability to improve in an environment of fast and frequent change.
Every profession will require adaptability and flexibility. Say you are an accountant. Your IQ gets you through the examinations. Your EQ helps your connect with an interviewer, land a job, and develop relationships with clients and colleagues. ____37____ All three quotients are somewhat complementary(互补的), since they all help you solve problems and therefore adapt. An ideal candidate possesses all three, but not everyone does. ____38____ While there is no definite method of measuring adaptability like an IQ test, companies are changing their recruitment (招聘) processes to help identify people who may be high in it.
Natalie Fratto suggests three ways AQ might show in potential candidates: if they can picture possible versions of the future by asking what if questions; if they can unlearn information to challenge conventional wisdom; and if they enjoy exploration or seeking out new experiences.
____39____ First, limit distractions and learn to focus so that you can determine what adaptations to make. Second, ask uncomfortable questions to develop courage and normalize fear. Third, be curious about things that fascinate you by having more conversations rather than Googling the ready answer.
Over the next three years, 120 million people may need to be reskilled because of automation, according to a 2019 IBM study. We may not all be comfortable with the pace of change-but we can prepare. ____40____
A. AQ is now increasingly being sought at the hiring level.
B. One good thing about AQ is that experts say you can work to develop it.
C. The ability to learn, change, grow, experiment will be the key.
D. This is because an algorithm(算法)can do these tasks faster and more accurately than a human.
E. But today, as technology redefines how we work, the skills we need to improve in the job market are developing too.
F. Having IQ but no EQ would leave you struggling to embrace new ways of working using your existing skills.
G. Then, when systems change or aspects of work are automated, you will need AQ to accommodate this innovation and adapt to new ways of performing your role.

At age 10, I stood in front of my new class, my new classmates looking at me with mild interest as my teacher introduced me. I joined in the middle of the school year. There were 41 students in my new class. I was the 42nd.
All my classmates sat in pairs except for this one girl, Kate. I went and sat down next to her and gave her a small, uncertain smile. She smiled in return. The class started and we didn’t talk until lunch time. At lunch time, I pulled out my lunch box, packed by my mother. It had fried rice with home-made cakes and a small box of fruits. Clearly my mom had spent time packing this yummy lunch. This girl took out a small box with bread butter inside. In India, it’s pretty rare for kids to just get bread butter for lunch. The only time I had bread butter for lunch was if my mom was unwell. So I thought that was what the problem here was. I offered her a small part of my lunch and forgot all about it. The next day, she again had bread butter. Well, I thought, her mother might have fallen ill, so she was taking time to recover. I again offered her a part of my lunch. This went on for a week. Then one day, I asked the one question that I shouldn’t have. “Is your mom not well?”
In fact, I wasn’t prepared for the answer. Later, I knew that her mother, who worked in a supermarket, was in poor health. She constantly stayed at home with no income. I didn’t know what to do. So I did the most obvious thing. I went home and told my mom that my lunch wasn’t enough and I still felt hungry after eating it. My mom started packing a bigger lunch. And in school, I’d tell Kate that my mom had packed me a lunch too big, so could she please help me finish it? Then I asked her what her favorite dish was. “Naan,” she whispered.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled.

M: Well, our plane didn’t take off on time. It was delayed five hours, so we didn’t get to Lhasa until four in the morning and we were very tired when we got there. But we managed to book a car at the airport through a car rental platform and it dropped us off at the hotel in time around 7 o’clock for breakfast. So that was all right.
W: And how was the hotel?
M: Well, we were a little disappointed with the room. But the Potala Palace was just a stone’s throw away.
W: And how important are holidays to you?
M: Oh, we always look forward to going on holiday. We always make sure we can get away at least once a year.
W: Well, hello there, Paul! Wow! Long time no see! It is great to see you again.
M: Deborah! It is you. Hello! What a coincidence! I have not seen you in ages! It is great to see you again. What are you doing in Manchester? Are you just visiting?
W: I just got a new job in Manchester in finance, so I am here shopping for some new clothes. Hey, what do you think of this skirt?
M: Hmm… well, you remember how much my wife loves black. See? She has got the same skirt as you!
W: Your wife has always had great taste in clothes! Well, this is a small world.
M: We must keep in touch. You still have my mobile number?
W: No. I lost my phone. Here is my new number.
M: Ok, I will save your number.
W: Great. Oh, I have to go. I made an appointment with my friends to see a movie. Give me a ring so we can arrange dinner sometime.
M: For sure. Take care. Bye.
W: I almost had a complete disaster yesterday, but I just missed it. I went to the gym around noon and worked out for an hour. When I stopped by the bakery to pick up some bread for dinner, I discovered I didn’t have my wallet with me. I went home, but it wasn’t there, either. Then I remembered I had had it with me on the golf course the day before. I had two hundred dollars in it, my Visa card, and my driver’s license. I decided to go back to the golf course and try to get my wallet back. I needed to fill up the car with gas to the course, but luckily, I had a bank card at home. When I finally got there, I asked around the changing room, but no one had seen it. Then I asked the people in the restaurant and they didn’t have it, either. My last chance was the kids outside who wash the golf carts. And they told me one of workers found it when he was cutting the grass in the morning. I offered to treat the guy to a round of golf, but he said he plays there for free, anyway. Finally, he said if I came back, I could buy him a beer. I told him he had a deal.

After being driven to near extinction, wolves are back in Washington state.
根据第二段中“These wolves are what Maletzke calls stepping stones in recovery — the animals that could help lead the way to new territory not yet repopulated by wolves.”(这些狼被Maletzke称为恢复的垫脚石——这些动物可以帮助引领通往尚未被狼重新居住的新领域。)
根据第三段“Wolves spread to new territory to find mates and begin packs of their own. It is this pack dynamic that wildlife biologists are counting on, in time, to urge wolves into areas where they do not presently live. “We just need a couple to pick up and go,” Maletzke says.”(狼扩散到新的领地去寻找配偶并开始自己的族群。
根据第四段中“All along, the Teanaway pack has stayed mostly out of trouble probably, helped by a lot of range riding (牧区巡逻) intended to help reduce conflicts over wolf recovery by keeping wolves away from cattle.”(一直以来,Teanaway狼群基本上没有遇到麻烦,这可能得益于大量的放牧活动,这些活动旨在通过让狼远离牛群来减少狼群恢复的冲突。)
根据倒数第二段中“To her, the return of the wolf is about more than the species; it is about recovering something even bigger: hope.”(对她来说,狼的回归不仅仅是关于物种;而是要找回更大的东西:希望。)

A 33. B 34. A 35. D

E 37. G 38. A 39. B 40. C
根据前文“Both IQ and EQ are considered important to our career success.(智商和情商对我们事业的成功都很重要。)”以及后文“Enter adaptability quotient(AQ), a subjective set of qualities loosely defined as the ability to improve in an environment of fast and frequent change.(适应能力商数”(简称AQ),是一组主观素质,大致定义为能够在快速频繁变化的环境中不断改进的能力。)”空白处前后句形成一定的对比,前面为大家熟知的IQ和EQ,后面引出新的AQ,E选项“But today, as technology redefines how we work, the skills we need to improve in the job market are developing too.(但今天,随着技术重新定义我们的工作方式,我们在就业市场上需要改进的技能也在发展。)”
根据前文“Say you are an accountant. Your IQ gets you through the examinations. Your IQ gets you through the examinations. Your EQ helps your connect with an interviewer, land a job, and develop relationships with clients and colleagues.(假设你是一名会计。你的智商能让你通过考试。情商有助于你与面试官联系、找到工作、与客户和同事发展关系。)”前文分别介绍了IQ和EQ在工作中的作用,所以空白处应该是AQ在工作中的作用,G选项“Then, when systems change or aspects of work are automated, you will need AQ to accommodate this innovation and adapt to new ways of performing your role.”(然后,当系统改变或工作的某些方面自动化时,您将需要AQ来适应这种创新并适应执行您的角色的新方法。)
根据前文“An ideal candidate possesses all three, but not everyone does.(理想的候选人三者都具备,但并不是每个人都具备。)”以及后文“While there is no definite method of measuring adaptability like an IQ test, companies are changing their recruitment (招聘) processes to help identify people who may be high in it.(虽然还没有像智商测试那样确定的衡量适应性的方法,但公司正在改变他们的招聘流程,以帮助识别那些可能在AQ处于较高水平的人。)” A选项“AQ is now increasingly being sought at the hiring level.”(AQ现在在招聘层面上越来越受欢迎。) 故选A。
空白处在这一段开头,为该段的总起句,根据后文“First, limit distractions and learn to focus so that you can determine what adaptations to make. Second, ask uncomfortable questions to develop courage and normalize fear. Third, be curious about things that fascinate you by having more conversations rather than Googling the ready answer.(首先,限制分心,学会集中注意力,这样你就能决定要做出什么样的调整。第二,提出不舒服的问题来培养勇气,让恐惧正常化。第三,对吸引你的事物保持好奇心,多交谈,而不是搜索现成的答案)”该段后面介绍了一些方法来提高适应性,B选项“One good thing about AQ is that experts say you can work to develop it.”(AQ的一个好处是,专家说你可以努力开发它。)
前文“We may not all be comfortable with the pace of change-but we can prepare.(我们可能都不适应变化的速度,但我们可以做好准备。)”写我们需要为未来的变化准备,如何准备呢?C选项“The ability to learn, change, grow, experiment will be the key.( 学习、改变、成长、实验的能力将是关键。)”

故填to。
故填which/that。

这里为本句谓语动词,根据下文“how a city was able to keep such a rich heritage (遗产) while constantly growing.” 故填was amazed。
spend time (in) doing sth.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I moved out of that school soon after and didn’t stay in touch with Kate.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled. Naan was not a common dish in our household, and my mom wasn’t sure if she could prepare it, but she promised she would try. The next day, I was thrilled to find that my lunch box now contained a piece of Naan, and I eagerly shared it with Kate. Seeing her smiling face made me feel really happy inside. From that day on, my mom would occasionally pack some Indian delicacies for me to share with Kate, and I would be more than happy to do so.
I moved out of that school soon after and didn't stay in touch with Kate. However, this experience taught me an important lesson about kindness and understanding. Often we judge people too quickly, without realizing their underlying struggles. While it may seem small, sharing my lunch with Kate helped me to connect with her on a deeper level and to understand her better. As I grew older, I would try to apply this lesson in my daily life – to be a little kinder, a little more empathetic, and a little more understanding of people's struggles.
