(2024届福建省福清市联考)I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province,on the historic Tea Horse
Road.I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire
globe on his own two feet,I was blown away.I couldn't imagine that there could be such an
unusual person in the world.
Last May,I met Paul.He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with
great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke
of the Shu-Yandu Dao the Southern Silk Road),the travels of the 17th-century Chinese
explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph
Rock.He also talked of Xuanzang.Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese
pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28,2021,we set
out.Our days were simple:walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high
spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road.Some were curious,surrounding us and watching us;
some gave us directions;some invited us into their home to take a rest;some spoke of the charm
of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking
with our minds.
Together,we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked
on ancient paths through mountains,I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging
me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul,I came to a realization.
Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable,is only a small part of the benefit of
moving with our feet.A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us,shortening the
distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.
4.How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?
A.Scared.
B.Puzzled.
C.Disappointed.
D.Surprised.
5.What can we learn about Paul Salopek from Paragraph 2?
A.He was a western journalist.
B.He had a knowledge of China.
C.He came to China several times.
D.He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.
6.What does Paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?
A.They honored the ancestors.
B.They set off in high spirits.
C.They satisfied the locals'curiosity.
D.They built bonds with people.
82
7.What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?
A.To share and reflect on a journey.
B.To suggest a new way of travel.
C.To advocate protection of biodiversity.
D.To introduce and promote Chinese culture.

Before the corona virus pandemic arrived in Italy, the big worry about tourism was
overcrowding,as millions of tourists crowded the country's most popular spots like Florence,
Rome and Venice. Then, with the pandemic, tourists disappeared.
According to most estimates, the tourism sector is not expected to recover to pre-pandemic
levels until late 2023 or early 2024,but political leaders and many working in the sector are
taking steps now to assure that,as the tourism strengthens,it avoids the former overcrowding
problems in tourist centers.
"Italy should not emphasize the dependence on big tour buses that all pull into parking lots
and overwhelm a small town for a few hours, but promote more high-quality tourism that shows
visitors the country wonders beyond the few dozen places everyone knows about,"Gianfranco
Lorenzo, head of the research department for Florence's Center for Touristic Studies, says.
There's no reason people should be lined up to see one famous site when there are many places
that are just as important and just as impressive.
Those strategies are already in development. This summer many Italian cities are trying to
focus the attention of visitors on outdoor attractions like sprawling gardens and architectural
ruins, where visitors can remain spread out to keep corona-virus infection risks low.
Florence's Uffizi Galleries, one of the most visited museums in Italy, has launched the
"Uffizi Diffusi"initiative which includes displaying some of its collections in museums in smaller
towns to help draw tourists who might otherwise have spent their time in overcrowded Florence.
Lorenzo says reducing the impact of tourists does not mean the country will have to host
fewer tourists in the future."In a few years we could even have more tourists than we had before
the pandemic,"he says."But for that to be sustainable, they just have to be spread out more
evenly.”
8.Why do the political leaders in Italy adopt certain strategies in the tourism sector?
A.To protect visitors from corona-virus infection.
B.To settle the overcrowding problem in tourist centers.
C.To limit the number of tourists coming to Italy.
D.To host more foreign tourists in the near future.
9.The "Uffizi Diffusi"initiative has been launched to
A.draw more tourists
B.display great works
C.promote tourism industry
D.spread out visitors
83
10.What is Gianfranco Lorenzo's attitude towards the future of tourism in Italy?
A.Optimistic.
B.Ambiguous.
C.Doubtful.
D.Concerned.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Problem of Overcrowding in Italy.
B.The Future of the Tourism Industry in Italy.
C.The Reform of the Tourism Industry in Italy.
D.The Impact of Corona-virus Pandemic on Italy.

The shiny black sports car sat at the traffic lights. The driver's window was down, and the
driver was wearing a suit and dark sunglasses. It was an expensive car.Thomas Campbell knew
that because he used to have one.But now he was sitting on a bench, which had served as his bed
for the previous few nights, with no more than a pocket full of change to his name. The lights
changed, the car sped off and Thomas sighed.
85
It had all happened in the space of a year.He was laid off from his well-paid job when the
economy took a turn for the worse.Although he was paid handsomely,he lived a lifestyle to
match and always spent any raise or bonus on expensive but unnecessary things.Losing his job
put pressure on his marriage and his wife left. Then he couldn't make his mortgage (
repayments.A few weeks later he found himself in a cheap hotel and a few months after that,in
a sleeping bag under a bridge downtown.
As Thomas walked in the streets late that night,he thought about the man in the car and
about whether he could improve his life again. He had grown up quite poor,so was used to not
having much, but living outside was hard.Perhaps the hardest thing was how differently people
treated him now when he didn't have a suit or haircut. They often said negative things.Even
worse than that was just treating him as invisible.Once he walked past someone he used to work
with, they looked through him like he weren't there, and it made him feel less than a human.
Then as he turned a corner,he heard the cries of a child from a second-storey window. He
could see a little girl with a thick plume (of smoke surrounding her.He looked about but no
one was nearby. He shouted to the girl, but she was crying and coughing and couldn't hear him.
Then he heard another cry from inside. It was a baby.
