(2024届辽宁省大连市滨城联盟高三模拟)At the age of9,my father passed away.I often
helped mum with the housework and changing the vacuum cleaner(真空吸尘器)bag and picking
up things the machine did not suck up always drove me crazy. One day 20 years later,in 1978,I
was doing chores at home alongside my wife. The vacuum cleaner was screaming, and worse
still,I had to empty the bag several times. But for my wife's comfort,I would have lost it just as
I did many years ago.It was at that time that I decided to make a bagless vacuum cleaner. And I
even imagined myself using it for the next weekend cleaning.
Easier said than done,of course.I didn't realize that I would spend the next five years
p

perfecting my design,a process that resulted in5,l27 different prototypes(设计原型).By the
time I made my 15th prototype,my third child was born.By 2,627,my wife and I were really
counting our pennies.By 3,727,my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we
were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but with my family,I pulled
through and each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.

I just had a passion for the vacuum cleaner as a product, but I never thought of going into a
business with it..In the early 198Os,I started trying to get licensing agreements(许可协议)for
my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a
business model based on the profits from bags and filters ()No one would license my idea,
not because it was a bad one,but because it was bad for business.
黄
That gave me the courage to keep going, but soon after, the companies that I had talked
with started making machines like mine.I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic
御
to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner. However,I was still in financial difficulties until
1993,when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me 1 million. Then
my bagless vacuum cleaner was produced in large numbers.Within two years, the Dyson vacuum
cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today,I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of my life."Go out and
brainstorm new ideas."I often tell myself.

(2024届浙江省绍兴市高三模拟)In a groundbreaking effort, scientists at the University of
Rochester have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats to mice, leading
to enhanced health and a longer lifespan for the mice.
Unlike many other species, the rats do not often contract diseases-including cancer-as
they age.Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of biology and medicine at
Rochester, along with Andrei Seluanov,a professor of biology, and their colleagues have
devoted decades of research to understanding the unique mechanisms (that the naked mole
rats use to protect themselves against aging and diseases. The researchers discovered that HMW-
HA is one mechanism responsible for the rats'unusual resistance to cancer.Compared to mice
and humans, naked mole rats have about ten times more HMW-HA in their bodies. When the
researchers removed HMW-HA from the rat cells, the cells were more likely to form tumors
(肿瘤).
—66
"Our study provides a proof of principle that unique longevity mechanisms that evolved in
long-lived mammals can be exported to improve the lifespans of other mammals,"says
Gorbunova. The Rochester researchers report in a study published in Nature that they
successfully transferred a gene responsible for making HMW-HA from a naked mole rat to mice.
This led to improved health and an approximate 4.4 percent increase in the median lifespan for
the mice.
By introducing a specific gene responsible for enhanced cellular repair and protection into
mice, the researchers have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and
extending human lifespan."It took us 10 years from the discovery of HMW-HA in the naked
mole rat to showing that HMW-HA improves health in mice,Gorbunova says."Our next goal
is to transfer this benefit to humans.
They believe they can accomplish this through two routes:either by slowing down the
degradation of HMW-HA or by enhancing HMW-HA synthesis."We hope that our findings will
provide the first, but not the last, example of how longevity adaptations from a long-lived
species can be adapted to benefit human longevity and health."Seluanov says.
5.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The beneficial effects of HMW-HA on humans.
B.The comparison between mice and humans in longevity.
C.The process of transferring genes producing HMW-HA.
D.The discovery of a unique mechanism for cancer resistance.
6.What can we learn about the Rochester researchers?
A.They have uncovered the secrets of humans.
B.They managed to end the weakening of HMW-HA.
C.They are planning to export longevity genes to humans.
D.They have spent 10 years trying to discover HMW-HA.
7.What does Seluanov think of the prospect of extending human lifespan?
A.Hopeful.
B.Profitable.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uncertain.
8.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Promise Shown in Control of Human Genes
B.Scientists Successfully Transfer Longevity Gene
C.Achievement Made in Extending Human Lifespan

(2o24届湖北省名校联考)With new advances in AI and autonomous driverless cars and
trains,it makes sense that this mode of transportation could be expanded to buses too.Now a
full-sized autonomous bus service is up and running in Scotland. The buses began running in
May,2023 and are carrying passengers between Ferrytoll Park and the Edinburgh Park train and
tram exchange. This 14-mile route is the first of its kind in the UK.
The autonomous buses are being operated by Stagecoach, the largest coach operator in the
UK.While the buses are autonomous, fully self-driving vehicles are not currently permitted in
the UK,so they are required to have a safety driver to monitor the technology, and a bus captain
that will help passengers board and purchase tickets. The driver can take control in case of an
emergency situation. The vehicles use sensors to travel on specific routes and can reach the top
speed of 50 mph. These autonomous buses are being trialed through 2025.
It took almost 10 years of research and development and 1.8 million kilometers of practice
runs to reach this milestone, which is considered the first full-size use of autonomous buses in
Europe."There have already been short trials in several cities in Italy,Finland, and France and
there are plans for driverless buses to be introduced in Switzerland,Germany, and Norway. We
want Scotland to continue to be a leading figure in the development of autonomous vehicles and
the start of this live trial will really help the country create its credit on the world stage,"said
Kevin Stewart,Scottish transport minister.
This project was one of six to receive funding from a joint UK government and Industry
undertaking to speed up the commercialization of self-driving technology. The government hopes
that the autonomous buses will be faster, more reliable, and safer to use than traditional buses
since 88 percent of road accidents are caused by drivers'errors.
9.Why is a driver needed on an autonomous driverless bus?
A.To help passengers board.
B.To sell tickets to passengers.
C.To check the fuel of the bus.
D.To track the movement of the bus.
10.Which of the following is the effect of the autonomous buses on the UK?
A.Increasing the income for the country.
B.Building up its new position to the world.
C.Causing drivers'unemployment.
D.Improving its bad transportation system.
一68
11.What can we infer about the autonomous buses in the UK from the text?
A.They are the first vehicles to use AI technology.
B.They have been well received by the passengers.
C.They are expected to cause fewer road accidents.
D.They prove how important technology is to a country.
12.What is the best title for the text?
A.Autonomous Buses Hit the Road in the UK
B.Autonomous Buses Are Welcome Worldwide
C.Autonomous Buses Have Come to Our Life
D.Drivers Will Withdraw from the Historical Stage

(2024届福建省福州市八县市一中模拟)An international team of researchers from Sweden
and the UK have developed an innovative way of interpreting biological signals produced by our
skin.Using data obtained from a Philips wrist-worn wearable sensor device that can also measure
movement, the researchers'system displays information in the form of colourful spiral graphics
(螺旋图形)in real time on a smartphone,as well as a recording of data, for the wearer to
interpret and reflect on.
The prototype(雏形)visualisation system,called“Affective Health”,was developed by
experts in Human-Computer Interaction looking into how new and emerging computer
technologies can be used to design engaging visualisations on smartphones.
A study group of 23 people were given the Affective Health prototype to use for a month.
Importantly, the researchers purposely did not tell the participants what the devices were useful
for.Instead, they gave guidelines that Affective Health could collect information relating to both
physical and emotional reactions, how increased sweating increased the conductivity, and how
this was represented by different colours. The participants were left to decide the best ways of
using the technology.
The researchers found that this open design stage of the study led to some participants using
the system as a tool to measure and help manage their stress levels. While others, including
outstanding athletes, used the device to get information on their training and recovery
programmes.Other uses included logging information on their lives and tracking emotions. But
interestingly, few would use the technology for more than one purpose.
69
Although the open design phase helped reveal several different practices Affective Health
prototypes could be used for,the prototype lacked some of the functions needed to make it a
good tool for a specific role-such as a sports training system,or as a stress management tool.
The researchers found the need for a second, more tailored step in the design process to make
devices specific to particular roles.
13.What were the participants unaware of about the prototype?
A.Its function as a measuring tool.
B.Its reactions to physical activity.
C.Its colourful spiral graphics.
D.Its specified uses.
14.What interested the researchers?
A.People used the device quite differently.
B.Few used the device to help better themselves.
C.Many considered the device a single-purpose tool.
D.Many purposely avoided the device's certain functions.
15.What can be learned about Affective Health?
A.It has a rising market share.
B.It causes trouble for users.
C.It lacks competitiveness.
D.It needs improvement.
16.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Sweat,a Mood Detector?
B.Time to Reflect on Ourselves?
C.Colourful Sensors Gain Popularity
D.Technologies Interpret Biodata from the Skin
