(2024届浙江省精诚联盟1月联考)At67,Joyce Faulkner thought she was looking for a
holiday. Her husband,Jim,had recently died and exploring possible house swaps on the Home
Exchange website felt less painful. In the end,it was not a vacation Faulkner found but a job.
She left her home in Edinburgh to become mother's help to seven-year-old twins in Varese,
Italy.
"It's halfway crazy,"she says.A house swap she was interested in didn't work out,but the
p
owner,Rachele, asked:"'Do you know anyone who might help me with the children?'I wrote
那
back and said:'Tell me what that involves!'She wrote me a little list, and I said:'I could do
that!'We seemed to believe in each other..”
Two months later, when Faulkner reached Varese,"the dad,Andrea, was walking
towards me with the children hiding behind his legs, kind of shy, thinking:'Who is this woman
如
in a long black coat?'I don't think it was quite Mary Poppins, but the atmosphere was
immediately warm and friendly.
Eighteen months on,Faulkner's job no longer feels like a job."I just feel like part of the
family."They joke:"You think you're going back to Scotland?No,you're staying here!"She
gives English lessons, helps with the housework, meets the children from school, plays chess or
table tennis with them, and takes them to the park."It never feels like work,"she says."It has
黄
been absolutely the perfect match.Faulkner's son,Steven, who lives in London, has visited
御
her and they have cycled around the northern Italian lakes. She feels no more distant than when
she lived in Edinburgh.
"You have to take the opportunity when it presents itself,"Jim once said.
"I'll be 70 in January, but in my head,I'm 30.I still feel the same person,I have the same
enthusiasm for life, the same interest in people and things. In that sense,I wish I had another
70,”Faulkner jokes.

(2024届重庆市百师联盟高三联考)“Thank you for letting me observe your classes. It was
an unusual experience,"the email began, which got my heart racing.
I am an industry scientist, and in my spare time I was teaching a course for computer science
students at a local university.By that point in the semester,I hadn't asked the students to solve
any technical problems or even open their computers.Instead,I taught them teamwork and
communication and skills they'd need in industry. My approach caught the attention of the
university,so a teaching expert appeared in my class. This made me wonder whether university
officials would agree with the unique view I brought from industry-or remove me from the
classroom.
I thought of these lessons when I started to develop the university class. The part-time role
was appealing because I was eager to share my expertise and get back to working with students.
But I didn't want to use my old teaching style, which focused on lectures and whiteboard
exercises.I wanted to develop the same qualities I was looking for in job candidates at my
company.
I decided to use games and challenges to encourage teamwork and creativity. In one,
students had to work together to decide how to survive a tough desert environment. In another,
they built the tallest structure they could out of spaghetti and candies. The teaching expert sat in
on one such class.
2
I worried they might have been taken aback().But after that unsettling opening, their
email was positive:"I understand the important message you're conveying,"they wrote.
"Today's industry is about people, not just computers.Keep up the good work."Hearing that
my teaching had a positive impact on their career paths was truly rewarding.
In the end, education is not just about sharing knowledge. It's also about helping students
develop soft skills that will help them succeed wherever they plan to go,be it academia or
industry.

B.To take over the author's work.
C.To learn about the author's teaching.
D.To help solve technical problems.
7.What does the author teach in class?
A.Survival skills.
B.Soft skills.
C.Game design.
D.Book knowledge.
8.What can we infer about the teaching expert?
A.He has a great impact on the author's career.
B.He attaches importance to sharing knowledge.
C.He points out the leading role of the computer.
D.He shares the same teaching idea with the author.

(2024届河北省张家口市张恒联盟高三联考)A new survey finds the gender gap in home
cooking has widened, with women cooking more meals than men in nearly every country
worldwide.
Women cooked just under nine meals per week,on average,in 2022.Men cooked about four
per week. These are the results of an annual survey by Gallup and Cookpad, which tracks how
often people prepare and eat home-cooked meals in countries around the globe.
When the survey began in 2018,traditional gender roles were well established, but during
the pandemic years the survey results showed that men were cooking more. This narrowed the
gender gap, explains Andrew Dugan,a research director at Gallup, who has worked on the
survey since it began. The latest results, which Dugan says come as a surprise, point to a
3
reversal of this trend. In 2022,women continued to cook at about the same frequency,
but men started to cook less.
"It's the first year that the gap actually widened,"Dugan says, pointing out that the gap
has reverted back to its starting point in 2018,"What it might suggest is that the traditional
gender roles are starting to reassert themselves,Dugan says.
The gender gap varies by country. In the United States, women cook about two more meals
per week on average, than men.The survey report charts the countries with the largest gender
gaps, including Ethiopia,Egypt, and Nepal where women are making about eight more meals
per week than men.The countries with the smallest gender differences in cooking are clustered
(成群的)in Europe,including Spain,the UK,France,and Ireland.
It's not clear why the gender gap widened in all the other countries including the U.S.but
chef Mike Friedman, who operates several restaurants in the Washington D.C.area,has his
take."The survey may not capture the whole picture,Friedman says,"In my house, lots of
meals are collaborations ()My wife does a lot of the cooking. But we talk about it and we
talk through what we should make tonight. And most times she'll start and I'll finish and then
I'm always left with the dishes".
9.What do we know about the survey?
A.It began across the U.S.in 2022.
B.It indicated men cooked less in 2018.
C.It measured how often people ate out.
D.It focused on gender gaps in eating habits.
10.What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?
A.Women are more willing to do the cooking.
B.Traditional cooking methods stay unchanged.
C.The researchers come from different countries.
D.Gender gaps in cooking are smaller in richer countries.
11.What can we learn from Friedman's words?
A.Friedman thinks the survey has limitations.
B.Friedman is critical of women's roles in cooking.
C.Friedman's household seldom works togetheron meals.
D.Friedman's household has a strict division of cooking roles.

12.What is the best title for the text?

(2024届福建省部分学校质量检测)The stands were always filled with family members to
support their favorite players.I attended each of my son's games. His father worked nights for
years, and missed out on most of his games. My son Jorden knew if his dad could,he would be
there sitting right beside me.
When Jorden was younger, some family members would occasionally come to watch. But
gradually they stopped showing up.Never once did Jorden lead me to believe that this bothered
him,but apparently it did.It wasn't until when he was asked to give a speech at his baseball
event that he made it very clear not only to me but a room filled with over 150 people just how
important it is to have extra fans in the stands.
His speech was anything but like I thought it would be.It wasn't short and bittersweet. It
wasn't his quick thank you to his coaches and teammates. He poured his heart out, saying he
seldom had grandparents, aunts or uncles coming to support him.He was grateful that his
teammates'family members showed up to support not just their own loved ones but the entire
team of boys.Clearly Jorden desired more than just me.Never did I ever think my son would be
hurting inside as he looked out to the bleachers to see only me at each and every game.
As he struggled to get each word out through tears,I promised I would attend as many
events of the children around as I possibly could. There was no way I could allow another child to
feel what my son was feeling. This small simple gesture would mean so much to any child.
Neither Jorden nor I was upset with those who never attended his games.Jorden just wanted
someone else besides me to witness his craft in action.I understand all of our lives become
complicated and that everyone is busy with their own children and jobs that may not allow them
as much free time as they'd like.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Moving back in with your parents as an adult isn't an easy decision, but sometimes it's
necessary.Maybe it's convenient.Maybe you're going through a tough time and need extra
support from your parents.1 Here are some ways to help create a harmonious household.
Create your exit plan. After settling into your parents'house, make a plan for how and
when you hope to move out.Your parents will probably want to know how long you intend to
stay.2 Your plan should include personal, professional and financial aims. For example,
maybe you want to stay with your parents until you've saved enough money for a down payment
on your first home or found a job.
Set boundaries. While living with your parents,be sure to set boundaries. It's a powerful
tool that fosters an environment of respect and understanding.Maintain your privacy by asking
your parents to knock before entering your room.Keep your parents out of your private life.
3 If they say they don't want you to borrow their car, don't borrow it.
—6
Maintain your routine. If you are having trouble setting boundaries, create a routine to help
you get out of the house, especially if you work from home and your parents are retired.4 If
you can,get out every day.During business hours, work from the office,a coffee shop or a local
library.Continue to take that spin class with your favorite instructor on Saturdays.Continue to
live your life.
5 Offer to pay for your share of the utilities, groceries or rent-even if it's a nominal
amount. If you can't cut your parents a rent check every month, there are other ways to chip in.
Perhaps you can take out the garbage,do the household laundry or wash the dishes after dinner.
Whatever you decide,be consistent -show your parents that you are grateful for the
opportunity to live at home.
A.Be kind to your parents.
B.Contribute to the household.
C.Don't forget that your parents have boundaries too.
D.And a plan may motivate you to keep reaching your goals.
E.Having that much family time can be a hotbed of conflict.
F.When living with family,it can be hard to find private moments.
