No.1 Jane gets a camping badge
Jane is an 11 year old, American, girl scout. She is a member of the bee troop. She
wears a bee badge to show that she is a hard worker like a bee.
Jane has earned many badges by showing she is good at things. A year ago, she got
a bird badge when she went bird watching. To earn that badge she had to see and
name 10 types of birds. She watched some swallows in a nest near her house and
wrote them on her list. She saw the other birds in a field in the countryside. Jane
went into the field to use her binoculars. With the binoculars, she could see far
away and she saw nine more types of birds.
Jane earned her fishing badge a month ago. She had to put a worm on a fish hook.
She had to use a fishing pole to catch a fish. After she caught the fish, she had to
make a campfire and cook the fish. She cut the fish and put it into a pan. She put
the pan on the campfire and cooked it for lunch. Then she and the other girl scouts
had a picnic and ate the fish.
Today, she is trying to earn her camping badge. She must put up a tent and sleep
outside for one night. Jane loves camping so she is excited. Before Jane gets her
camping badge she has to do some other things. She has to help someone who needs
first aid. Jane chooses to help another girl scout who has been stung by a bee. She
also has to paddle a canoe around the lake. It is quite an adventure for an 11 year old.
Do you think Jane will get her camping badge?

No.2 What is erosion?
Erosion is when some of the soil or rock breaks up and is carried away by water,
wind or ice. When trees are cut down, there is no shade. Smaller plants get too
much sun and they soon die. Erosion happens quickly on bare rock or soil. It
happens quickly in places where there are no trees or plants to hold the soil in place.
Think of a desert where there are no plants to keep the soil in place. Without rain,
the soil does not stay together. The soil becomes sand and blows away in the wind.
This is what happens when farmers cut down all the trees to grow food. The wind
can easily pick up the soil and blow it away. When farmers put lots of animals on
the land, they eat all the plants. Soon, only the soil is left. The wind blows the soil
away and no new plants can grow.
We can help to stop erosion by planting trees around farmland to protect the soil
from wind. Farmers who grow food can plant in different places each year. That
way, the soil is not moved much and it gets hard. Hard soil does not blow away like
soft soil. Animal farmers can move their animals to eat in different places. That
way the grass will grow back in one place and protect the soil from blowing away.
When we cut down trees we can plant new ones in the same place to hold the soil
together.

Double Ninth Festival

One young boy learned how to fight. He took all the people in his village up the
mountain. Each of them had a flower in their hands. When the bad spirit smelled the
flower it stopped moving. This helped the boy to kill it. Today, people get together

No.5 Shanghai fashion shows.
The Shanghai fashion show brought buyers from all over the world, there to s:e the ways that Chinese fashion is different from fash? m other-s Of the world. While the people of each country wear similar clothes such as trousers, jeans, t-shirts and shorts, the clothes do not all look the same. Videos of the Shanghai fashion shows were shown all over the world so people in other countries could sec what Chinese people like to wear.
Chinese culture is different than the culture in other countries and so their fashion is also different. For example, there is a lot of pollution in the air in China. One fashion designer created clothes with masks to help Chinese people breathe on days when the pollution is very bad. Some people thought the masks were more fashionable than the clothes.
Another Chinese fashion designer made silk clothes that look similar to the clothes that religious men, like monks, wear.
Although some of the Chinese, men's clothes were similar to those worn in other countries, Chinese men have not yet taken to wearing kilts. It seems that only Scottish men are still brave enough to wear a skirt!
Women from western countries like to show skin. Their dresses often have little cloth syhat they can show lots of skin. Chinese people do not like to get the sun on their skin so they wear clothes that keep the sun off.
There are other ways thatChinese fashion is different. For example, many Chinese purses are made from silk. Often purses made in other countries are made from leather.
Young Chinese fashion designers are using clothes as a way to be artists. They use the problems in theie culture such as pollution as a way to find ideas to make new and interesting fashions.

No.6 A beautiful heart is better than a beautiful body.
You don’t have to be big, or an adult or have special skills to be useful. Just look at
five year old Phoebe Russll. She needed to complete a community service project
people get food to eat.
Phoebe lives in San Francisco, USA. There are many homeless and hungry people
who live on the streets there. They often hold up signs asking for food or money.
Phoebe asked her teacher about these homeless people. When she understood that
they did not have any food or any money to buy food she felt sad for them.
Phoebe talked to her dad. She knew that her family collected cans at home and got
money when they took them to the recycling centre. She asked if they could give
this money to these homeless people. Her dad said she should write a letter asking
people to give Phoebe their empty cans to recycle.
Phoebe wrote a note to her family and friends. It said: I am going to graduate
from With Care pre-school. My charity project is to raise lots of money for the San
Francisco food bank. They need money. I am collecting soda cans. Would you
please give me your soda cans and bring them to With Care?
Phoebe wanted to raise si,000 by recycling cans, but she was so young that she
she would need to collect more than 4,000 cans.
Now you are going to finish the story. Before you read the ending to Phoebe s story, write your own story ending here:

This is how Phoebe's story ended:
However, many people began to bring cans and money to Phoebe's school. Some days Phoebe would come to school to find money in envelopes in the letter box. Other days she would find cans sitting at the school door For each can Phoebe recycled, she got five cents. In just two months Phoebe had raised
$3736.30. She gave that money to the food bank. That money will buy 17 800 hot meals for homeless people.
