An idiom has a meaning different from the meaning of each word in it. Today we are looking at some idioms about “air”.
To be in the air If spring is “in the air”, it’s about to happen: “The birds are singing and it feels a little warmer—spring is exactly in the air.”
To be walking on air It means to be very excited and happy because something good has happened to you. When she found out she would be a mother, she was walking on air.
To be up in the air If a question or decision is “up in the air”, it is still not sure what is going to happen, and no decision has been taken. Here is an example. “They told me I might be sent to work in the UK soon, but at the moment the decision is still up in the air.”
To clear the air If a discussion “clears the air”, it makes all the bad feelings go away because it gives everyone a chance to talk about their problems. For example, things had been tense (紧张) in the office for a long time, but the meeting we had last night really cleared the air.

Turning soil, pulling weeds (杂草), and harvesting tomatoes sound like hard work for students. At first it was, says Mr. Wang. Mr. Wang started a school garden program three years ago. The program helps students develop science skills, sense of nature, and healthy lifestyles.
Near the school, fresh food and green space are not easy to find. There are more fast food restaurants than supermarkets. “The kids often come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” Mr. Wang says. “They think vegetables are awful, soil is awful, and insects are awful.” However, most students are eager to try something new.
The school garden program includes soil testing, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they sometimes make salads for the school.
Kids eat more vegetables as a result of the program. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds (种子) to start their own vegetable gardens. What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of straw (稻草)? Most people would probably just see it as a pile of waste in the field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor (非遗传承人), can turn the straw into life-like artworks. She’s practised straw plaiting (草编) since she graduated from college. Straw plaiting is a skill of making daily items or artworks out of straw. It was added to the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.
Straw plaiting used to play a significant role in common (普通的) people’s daily life. When Wu was a child, straw items like straw shoes or straw hats could be found in every family in the countryside. “Because of the development of industry (工业), goods made by machine have taken the place of straw-plaited products (产品). Now there are only about 100 people working on straw plaiting across the country,” Wu said.
However, in today’s fast-paced life, people have a strong wish to get close to nature and find pleasure in it. Straw plaiting can meet people’s spiritual (精神上的) and cultural needs.
“_______ When I’m invited to teach students about the history of straw plaiting and show straw plaiting skills, students are willing to learn about straw plaiting. We also display works that are popular in the market, which always draw people’s attention (关注).” Wu said. “Thanks to the government’s attention to folk skills, straw plaiting is known to more and more people.”
“The world has changed, and straw plaiting should meet people’s needs and preferences. We should create (创造) new products to help straw plaiting pass down and develop. By winning the hearts of consumers (消费者), more people will understand the culture behind straw plaiting, and more craftsmen will be encouraged to work on it as a lifetime job,” Wu said.
18.What does the underlined word “significant” in Paragraph 2 have the closest meaning to?

A.Wu Cui gets a lot of support from her family.

D.Straw plaiting is growing popular both in school and in society.
21.From Wu Cui’s words in the last paragraph, how does she feel about the future of straw plaiting?

Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱). Earlier that evening, I received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can,” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting (奉献) himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we retuned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean shining. I couldn’t help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do…” Instead I try to think of one specific (具体的) task that suits that man’s need, like looking after friend’s young children, taking the dog to the boarding kennel (狗的临时寄养所), or house-siting during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed that done?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”
22.The writer didn’t know what to put into the suitcases because _________.
A.she couldn’t do it on her own
B.she was too sad to do anything
C.she wanted to take everything to Seattle
D.she was not good at housework
23.Here’s a time line of what happened in the story.
Which of the events should go in the empty box above?
A.Emerson came to clean the shoes.
B.The couple bathed the children.
C.They cleared the supper dishes.
D.The writer found the shoes cleaned.
24.If one of her friends has lost a loved one, what will the writer probably NOT do?
A.Call her friend to ask what she can do.
B.Look after her friend’s young children.
C.Take her friend’s dog to the boarding kennel.
D.Offer her friend house-sitting during the funeral.
25.Which sentence best expresses the theme of this story?
A.One person’s loss is another’s gain.
B.An act of kindness is often rewarded.
C.A near neighbour is better than a brother far off.
D.Do something specific to help those in need.

Gifts are a good way of showing how much you care about someone, especially during the festivals. 26 Luckily, picking the right gift can be a lot easier if you keep the following three tips in mind.
Know the person’s interests.
One of the worst things you can do is to give someone something he/she hates. It can hurt your friendship, because the other person may think you don’t care about him/her at all. 27
So you can make a list of what your friends like. Then try to find gifts that meet those interests. If they love music, you can give them CDs of their favourite singers’.
28
Gifts don’t have to be flashy (华而不实的) things. They can be something that is helpful in your friends’ daily life. So if you are looking for the right gift, you should find out what they need most.
29 Instead, listen carefully when they talk. For example, a friend may often say that he has no time to replace his broken schoolbag, you can surprise him with a new one.
Think about giving an experience.
Gifts don’t have to be physical things. 30 Studies have shown that a person remembers an experience more than physical things. If your friends are pop fans, a concert of their favourite pop stars must be a surprise and an experience that they will never forget.
A.Give them something they really want.
B.Choose to celebrate with a hand-made gift.
C.Online shops can be a good place to buy a gift.
D.But sometimes it can be difficult to find a perfect gift.
E.That’s why you should learn about his/her interests first.
F.They can be special experiences that the person did not expect.
G.Since gifts should be a surprise, don’t ask the person what they need.

Life is really a long journey. In my growing up life, I have been looking for ways to improve myself. Now I’d like to share some of the ways with you.
First, if I go to visit some places like museums, I will keep quiet and wait in line politely. Whether at home or in some other places, I will behave politely. The politer I am, the more welcome I will be.
Second, I will live a green life. It’s better to ride a bicycle instead of taking a car. What’s more, I will save water by taking shorter showers. A green life can help us live healthily.
