Michael Priscilla is a young architect with a blog that J follow. In a post, he described how in 2005, he rode coast-to-coast, 4,547 miles to Portland, Oregon, and he ended up staying there. He thought his experience changed his life.
The story resonated with me, because when I was 17, the summer before I went into architecture school, I did much the same thing, and it changed my life too. I did not go quite as far, traveling 2,700 miles to Vancouver.
But it was still a very long way and in 1970, nobody was riding bikes. Our diet only consisted of a loaf or white bread and a jar of peanut butter each meal, or dinner with other people in the campgrounds who were just amazed that we were doing this. Equipment was primitive and we had no sunscreen.
But, as it was for Michael, it was a life-changing experience. I have never forgotten that everything weighs something and every ounce matters: in architecture I always tended toward light and portable and simple. I learned that people of all ages and origins are generally really, really nice and helpful and friendly. When I got back to architecture school, I saw the world differently, understood space and time differently, and I don’t think that ever left me.
Going with the flow, having a good attitude and just being open to accept whatever happens, is the formula (公式) to having an amazing experience. Worrying and planning too much stops any experience from ever taking place. This is a hard lesson to learn.
Nowadays, lots of people of all ages are doing it. In America and Europe, bicycle tourism has become a big deal, with one website noting that bicycle vacations are the new trend. Perhaps crossing the entire country is a bit much, but reading Michael’s post makes me want to get back on my bike and take a good long ride.
4. What can we learn about Michael’s and the author’s cycling?
A. They took place in the same year.
B. They had great influence on life.
C. They had the same finishing point,
D. They covered more than 4,000 miles.
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s bicycling experience?
A. Romantic but lonely. B. Wonderful but unsafe.
C. Risky but meaningful. D. Challenging but rewarding.
6. What advice will the author most likely give to the eyelists?
A. Find a good companion. B. Don’t make too many plans.
C. Buy a comfortable bike. D. Choose a nice route.
7. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To recall an experience. B. To introduce a blogger.
C. To recommend a tour route. D. To explain a phenomenon.

An academic paper published in Nature Human Behavior on July 1 suggested smart technology is not making people more stupid but is, in fact, allowing people to learn more. The paper said that despite the fierce attack of smart technology that has influenced people’s daily lives, it actually helps people to become more excellent rather than less intelligent.
For example, if a person needs directions for how to get to a nearby stadium to attend a game, without smart technology, he would have to fish out a map, figure out where the stadium is on that map, and then determine a reasonable route from his current location to his destination. However, with smart technology, the person could simply type in the location and have directions, find parking and even pick a place to eat afterward in mere minutes, freeing up room in their brains to take in other information.
The “popular description” surrounding smart technology is that it blocks a person’s cognitive (认知的) abilities such as memory, the paper continued. “And when participants expected information to later be accessible on the computer, they were less likely to remember what its content was, but more likely to remember where it could be found. These effects were temporary and they emerged when access to digital technology or information stored there was available, not when access was unavailable,” the paper continued.
The researchers did recognize that long-term use of smart technology did diminish people’s abilities to perform cognitive tasks, such as “switching between tasks, remembering things, and paying attention.” However, they said these effects were related to using technology a lot, but not necessarily caused by it.
8. What did the paper find about smart technology?
A. It blocks memory abilities.
B. It occupies more memory space.
C. It makes people more brilliant.
D. It allows people to study less.
9. Why does the author give an example in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the function of brains.
B. To prove the importance of maps.
C. To stress the strengths of smart technology.
D. To show the ways of choosing directions.
10. What does the underlined word “diminish” probably mean?
A. Improve. B. Weaken. C. Assess. D. Keep.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Health. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Education.
D
Kelp(海藻) is a plant-like seaweed that can grow many tens of meters long. It forms huge forests that rise from the seabed to the surface and act as a habitat for many animals, playing a role in helping to reduce climate change, including rising temperatures. These underwater forests can take carbon dioxide —one of the main gases responsible for climate change — out of the air and replace it with oxygen.
However, satellite images show the area of kelp forests off the coast of northern California has fallen by 95% since 2013. This is caused in part by warming seas (kelp grows best in cold water) but it’s also linked to a disease that has destroyed local starfish. The starfish ate sea urchins(海胆) , and the sea urchins fed on kelp. As starfish numbers fell, the urchins got out of control, eating large areas of kelp forests. Yet within these barren areas, healthy Kelp still survives and scientists think that the sea otters(海獭) are helpful. They play an important role in the survival of threatened giant kelp forests.
The otters love to eat sea urchins. So well, in fact, that the sea otter population in the area has risen from around 270 to 432. The furry sea otters are eating three times more sea urchins than they did before 2013, but researchers including Joshua Smith, at the University of California Santa Cruz, noticed something interesting: the otters act like gardeners clearing urchins in the kelp forests but ignoring those in the barren areas. This may be because the forest urchins are rich in nutrients from the kelp, whereas those in the barren areas make a poor meal. “You open them up and they’re empty,” said Smith.
The sea otters’ gardening keeps the kelp healthy, offering hope for the future of kelp forests. For now, urchins lie in wait if the kelp tries to grow larger.
12. What is the function of kelp?
A. It gives off carbon dioxide.
B. It changes the diversity of sea species.
C. It provides a habitat for animals in the forest.
D. It contributes to the reduction of global warming.
13. What caused the decline of kelp?
A. Severe disease of kelp. B. Overgrowth of sea otters.
C. Drop it ocean temperature. D. Decrease in the number of starfish.
14 What can we know about sea otters?
A. They love to eat starfish.
B. They are more active in barren areas.
C. They have been increasing since 2013.
D. They help control the population of sea urchins.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Kelp Influences Climate Change
B. Kelp in Danger: Strategies Should be Taken
C. Sea Otters Keep Kelp Forests Alive
D. Sea Urchins: Main Threat to Kelp Forest

I loved writing. It was a hobby. But my high school English teacher, Rachel Green was determined to make me an author. Her comments were more than just about fixing grammatical errors. She wrote questions to make my essays more detailed; she underlined passages that she agreed with. Her letters always started with how proud she was that I was brave enough to write the truth, how she saw potential in me. I enjoyed her words — read them over and over.
I needed this care, this recognition. I was the last Watson child to attend Jefferson High School. My sister Cheryl was known for being one of the star writers of the school newspaper. Dyan, another sister, was good at playing the piano. My sisters were involved in all types of after-school activities: cheer-leading, volleyball, track and student government. While I was the little one following them like a shadow. No one noticed my existence except Ms Green.
Adjusting to high school was challenging, and I felt insecure. On the first day of my high school, a teacher greeted me with a hug, saying, “You have some big shoes to fill.” Then she showed me the trophy case(奖杯橱窗) in the hallway. I immediately recognized two: Cheryl and Dyan. I was inspired, yes, but mostly worried. My Spanish was so-so. I got good grades but was not a straight A’s student. I loved music, but I wasn’t good at playing any musical instruments. Worse still, I never dared to share my story in front of my class. I tried to walk in my sisters’ shoes, but they didn’t fit. I tried to follow their steps, but it’s too hard, really.
One day, Ms Green invited me to read my new story in front of my class in the writing lesson next week. My heart skipped a beat and disbelief washed over me. I murmured my anxiety about being laughed at. Stroking my hair gently, Ms Green assured me that my story full of fantasy would win everyone’s heart. Days seemed to be minutes.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

B 5. D 6. B 7. A

A. Health. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Education.
C 9. C 10. B 11. C

根据第一段中“The paper said that despite the fierce attack of smart technology that has influenced people’s daily lives, it actually assists people to become more excellent rather than less intelligent.(该论文指出,尽管智能技术的猛烈冲击已经影响了人们的日常生活,但它实际上帮助人们变得更加优秀,而不是变得不聪明)”可知,论文发现智能技术会让人们变得更聪明。
根据第一段最后一句“The paper said that despite the fierce attack of smart technology that has influenced people’s daily lives, it actually assists people to become more excellent rather than less intelligent.(该论文指出,尽管智能技术的猛烈冲击已经影响了人们的日常生活,但它实际上帮助人们变得更加优秀,而不是变得不聪明)”和第二段“For example, if a person needs directions for how to get to a nearby stadium to attend a game, without smart technology, he would have to fish out a map, figure out where the stadium is on that map, and then determine a reasonable route from his current location to his destination. However, with smart technology, the person could simply type in the location and have directions, find parking and even pick a place to eat afterward in mere minutes , freeing up room in their brains to take in other information.(例如,如果一个人需要知道如何前往附近的体育馆观看比赛,若没有智能技术,他将不得不翻出地图,在上面找到体育馆的位置,然后确定一条从当前位置到目的地的合理路线。然而,借助智能技术,这个人只需输入位置信息,就可以在几分钟内获取路线、找到停车位,甚至选择之后吃饭的地方,这为他们的大脑腾出了空间,使其能够吸收其他信息。)”可知,第二段的举例主要是为证明第一段的观点:智能技术会让人们变得更聪明,强调智能技术的优势。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段中“The “popular description” surrounding smart technology is that it blocks a person’s cognitive (认知的) abilities such as memory, the paper continued.(该论文继续写道,围绕智能技术的“普遍描述”是,它会阻碍人的认知能力,如记忆力)”和划线词所在句“The researchers did recognize that long-term use of smart technology did diminish people’s abilities to perform cognitive tasks, such as “switching between tasks, remembering things, and paying attention.”(研究人员确实认识到,长期使用智能技术会降低人们执行认知任务的能力,如“在任务之间切换、记忆事物和集中注意力”。)”
通读全文,尤其结合第一段“An academic paper published in Nature Human Behavior on July 1 suggested smart technology is not making people more stupid but is, in fact, freeing up brain space to allow people to learn more. The paper said that despite the fierce attack of smart technology that has influenced people’s daily lives, it actually assists people to become more excellent rather than less intelligent.(7月1日发表在《自然人类行为》上的一篇学术论文表明,智能技术并没有让人变得更愚蠢,事实上,它释放了大脑空间,让人们能够学习更多知识。论文中提到,尽管智能技术已经深刻影响了人们的日常生活,但事实上它帮助人们变得更加优秀,而不是变得不聪明)”可推知,文章介绍了发表在《自然人类行为》上的一篇学术论文证明智能技术可以帮助人们变得更优秀而不是更愚钝。文章内容与科学技术相关,所以很可能出自报纸的科学版块。故选C项。
A It gives off carbon dioxide.
B. It changes the diversity of sea species.
C It provides a habitat for animals in the forest.
D. It contributes to the reduction of global warming.
13. What caused the decline of kelp?
A. Severe disease of kelp. B. Overgrowth of sea otters.
C. Drop it ocean temperature. D. Decrease in the number of starfish.
14. What can we know about sea otters?
A. They love to eat starfish.
B. They are more active in barren areas.
C. They have been increasing since 2013.
D. They help control the population of sea urchins.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Kelp Influences Climate Change
B. Kelp in Danger: Strategies Should be Taken
C. Sea Otters Keep Kelp Forests Alive
D. Sea Urchins: Main Threat to Kelp Forest
D 13. D 14. D 15. C

The starfish ate sea urchins(海胆) , and the sea urchins fed on kelp. As starfish numbers fell, the urchins got out of control, eating large areas of kelp forests.”(这部分是由海洋变暖引起的(海藻最适合在冷水中生长),但也与一种破坏了当地海星的疾病有关。
根据文章第三段“The otters love to eat sea urchins. So well, in fact, that the sea otter population in the area has risen from around 270 to 432.”(海獭喜欢吃海胆。
根据全文内容以及根据第二段“Yet within these barren areas, healthy Kelp still survives and scientists think that the sea otters(海獭) are helpful. They play an important role in the survival of threatened giant kelp forests.”(然而,在这些贫瘠的地区,健康的海藻仍然存活下来,科学家们认为海獭是有帮助的。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

After class, I went to my teacher’s office to express my thanks.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Before I knew it, the big day came! My heart beating wildly and legs trembling, I stepped onto the platform. “Once. upon...” I uttered every word with a tied tongue. Everyone waited in silence. But seeing Ms Green’s encouraging smile, I took a deep breath and illustrated my story in a modest tone. Gradually, everyone got immersed in the fantasy world of my story. No sooner had I finished my story than my class burst into a round of applause. And Ms Green nodded appreciatively.
After class, I went to my teacher’s office to express my thanks. Upon seeing Ms Green, tears of gratitude welled up in my eyes, and I added emotionally, “Ms Green, it’s your recognition and guidance that have enabled me to recognize my unique talent.” She hugged me tightly in her arms, whispering in my ear, “You are bound to be a great author and believe in yourself.” Since then, I have created more excellent works. Deep in mind, I know I could walk in my own shoes and become the best version of myself.
