B Damarie Thomas, a twelve-year-old Jamaican teen, was concentrating on practising his skills for the upcoming football contest when he felt a hard tackle(抢断球) from behind, which pushed him to the ground. His world changed overnight. Though his injuries did not result in paralysis(瘫痪), they were serious enough to affect his movement. It was the last time that he had played football. Now Thomas is an adult and he uses a wheelchair to travel distances. Despite a number of difficulties, he perseveres in his attempts to walk. He proudly claims that from being able to move only two steps at a time, he can now do five steps unaided. Limited resources have influenced his treatment, but he is hopeful that he will be able to complete recovery soon. Having an experience like this would have broken many an adult, but not this young man. “It’s not what happens but how you come back from it that counts,” he said. After his injury, Thomas did well in his primary school exams and gained a place at one of the top-rated high schools in Jamaica. However, at that time the school was not equipped to accommodate a physically disabled student and he had to accept a transfer to a high school near his home. It is a blessing that Thomas has now signed up for an information technology course at Abilities Foundation, proudly claiming his improvement by learning coding(编码). The Abilities Foundation aims to equip the disabled with skills through training. The training centre encourages Thomas to chase his dream — he wants to become a successful software engineer, creating innovative technology accessible and beneficial to all, especially people with disabilities. 4. Why couldn’t Damarie Thomas continue to play football? A. Because he became completely paralysed. B. Because he was seriously injured. C. Because he moved to another country. D. Because he wanted to focus on his study. 5. What once affected his treatment? A. His weak physical condition. B His serious leg injury level. C. The limited conditions then. D. His imperfect academic record. 6. What is Damarie Thomas’ dream? A. To become a software engineer. B. To earn much money. C. To graduate from the Abilities Foundation. D. To become a doctor to help people with disabilities. 7. Which of the following can be used to describe Damarie Thomas? A. Humorous and smart. B. Kind and honest. C. Confident and generous. D. Brave and strong. C The Earth Hour is celebrated on the last Saturday of March every year. It is observed from 20:30 to 21:30 hour local time of each place. The day is observed in order to conserve energy and draw the world’s attention to the cause of environmental degradation (退化). It all started in 2007, with the first ever Earth Hour organized by the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature in Sydney. The hour saw as many as 2. 2 million residents of Sydney switch off the lights of their homes and offices in order to pledge their support to saving the environment. The trend soon caught on and several other countries participated across the globe in this initiative, which is organized by WWF each year. At present, there are about 152 countries which actively observe the hour each year. WWF, the organizer of the event annually, came up with the idea in order to have people actively participate in working for the environment. The larger cause behind the concept is to adopt healthier and more sustainable ways of living. The event has been largely followed across the globe by people of different nationalities. However, there are some attackers of the event as well. According to some people, the event actually contributed to global warming. Their argument is that when people switch off their lights, they inevitably use candles instead. Since the event happens globally, there is far more energy consumed than it is saved, which actually contributes to global warming. Despite the attackers, the event has actually been successful in raising awareness among people of the environmental problems. 8. What is the purpose of the Earth Hour? A. To attract people’s attention to the lights. B. To make people become much healthier. C. To unite people of different nationalities. D. To save energy and protect the environment. 9. What is the meaning of the underlined word “pledge” in Paragraph 2? A. Attract. B. Promise. C. Consider. D. Persuade. 10. Which can be inferred about the event from the last paragraph? A. All the people actively participate in the event. B. The event should be banned. C. Some people disagree with the event. D. The event will solve the environmental problems. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards the event? A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Doubtful. D In recent years, scientists who study wild populations are increasingly turning to remotely piloted planes, otherwise known as drones, to monitor animals. For example, drones are being used to track whales, or to keep an eye on African elephant herds and watch for signs of poaching. Such remote surveys are generally considered highly cost-effective. But it wasn’t clear whether they are as accurate as old-fashioned, feet-on-the-ground, expert evaluations. To find out, Jarrod Hodgson of the University of Adelaide led the study. Using rubber ducks, the researchers laid out 10 colonies (聚居地), ranging in size from about 500 to more than 1,000 individuals. “We then had experienced ground counters make independent counts of those birds from nearby. At the same time, we flew a drone overhead capturing photographs.” The drone data were then analyzed two ways. First, a group of scientists added up the number of birds they could see in each scene. The results of that approach: “We found that on average the drone-derived data or the drone-derived counts made by humans counting the images were between 43 percent and 96 percent more accurate than the traditional ground-based counts.” The better the image, the more accurate the count. Then, Hodgson and his team developed a semi-automated computer program to do the counting for them. And they found: “there was no statistical difference between those counts and the counts completed by our volunteers using exactly the same imagery.” The results appear in the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution. So counting by drone not only saves time and effort, but yields better data, a definite plus in terms of conservation. “When we monitor wildlife, increasing the accuracy and the precision of animal surveys gives us more confidence in our population estimates. And this. means that we have a stronger evidence base on which to make management decisions or policy changes.” In other words, a drone in the sky is better than two scientists in the bush. 12. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Drones. B. Remote surveys. C. Whales. D. African elephant herds. 13. What can we learn from the results of the approach? A. The drone data were more accurate. B. The images were very complex. C. The count has nothing to do with the image. D. The traditional ground-based counts were more reliable. 14. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. The procedure of counting by drones. B. The accuracy of counting by drones. C. The aim of counting by drones. D. The benefits of counting by drones. 15. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. The Ways to Analyze Drone Data B The Scientists in the Bush C. The Drones Used to Count Animals D. She was three, and as a new travel writer, I was excited about a solo (独自的) visit alone to South Carolina. Seeing photos of where I was going, she didn’t hold back her despair. “Why did you even have me if you were just going to leave me behind?” she sobbed. I tried to tell her that someday she’d understand. But as my husband, Evan, pried(拉开) her off my leg so I could leave, I wondered if my solo trip would be worth the effort of going without her. Returning home after a few days away, I felt energized and inspired. Mai a was happy to hear about my trip. She told me I could keep going on trips for work— but she’d come with me. Growing up on a sailing boat gave Mai a an early sense of adventure. Travelling is something Evan and I hoped :Maia would love. Our goal was to set out sailing again when she was seven, an age when she’d be able to remember the voyage. Until then, the plan was for me to travel on my own and build a writing career while we took Maia on short family trips. But then, a year later, an invitation came to experience the Rocky Mountaineer on a parent-child journey through the Rockies, which sounded too good to pass up. Ever since Mai a was little, she’d dreamed of travelling the world with her parents. Dressed in her fanciest train-riding clothes, four-year-old. Maia watched me take notes about the scenery as we traveled along the Fraser River in BC. 4. A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Doubtful. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段中“The day is observed in order to conserve energy and draw the world’s attention to the cause of environmental degradation(退化).(设立这一天是为了节约能源,并引起全世界对环境退化原因的关注。)” 根据第二段中“The hour saw as many as 2. 2 million residents of Sydney switch off the lights of their homes and offices (一小时内多达220万悉尼居民关掉家中和办公室的灯)”可知,此处描述的是悉尼的220万居民关灯的行为,是为了表示他们对环境保护的支持,即他们通过这一行动承诺支持环保。 根据最后一段中“The event has been largely followed across the globe by people of different nationalities. However, there are some attackers of the event as well.( 世界各地的人们都在关注这一事件。然而,也有一些攻击者。)”可知,有些人不同意这项活动。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Despite the attackers, the event has actually been successful in raising awareness among people of the environmental problems.(尽管有反对者,这次活动实际上已经成功地提高了人们对环境问题的认识。)” B。 D In recent years, scientists who study wild populations are increasingly turning to remotely piloted planes, otherwise known as drones, to monitor animals. A. The Ways to Analyze Drone Data B. The Scientists in the Bush C. The Drones Used to Count Animals D. The Job of a Ground Counter 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据文章第一段“Such remote surveys are generally considered highly cost-effective. Wanting to prove her worth as. an assistant, she began interviewing the Australian couple across the aisle from us. Unable to spell more than a few words, she drew their answers in crayon. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I was surprised when Maia ended up being such an easy travel companion. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It was a trip to the coastal town that helped us reconnect. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I was surprised when Maia ended up being such an easy travel companion. Her curiosity and enthusiasm for the new environment quickly overshadowed any signs of discomfort. Despite her young age, she took in the scenery with an eager eye, constantly asking questions about the different landmarks and cultures we encountered. Her excitement for the journey was infectious, making even the long train rides seem like a mere blink of an eye. It was a trip to the coastal town that helped us reconnect. As we walked along the seashore, the soft sand beneath our feet and the gentle waves crashing against the shore created a serene backdrop for our conversations. Maia shared her dreams of exploring the world, while I told her stories of my own travels and adventures. In those moments, I realized how much she had grown and how proud I was of her independence and curiosity. It was a trip that not only broadened our horizons but also strengthened the bond between us as a family.
