For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our phone calls. Computer connections of the World Wide Web and the Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us by satellite. Airplane pilots sometimes also use a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator (赤道). Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour — exactly the same speed that the Earth rotates (转动). A satellite must move around the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the Earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit (轨道), so there are some rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days. Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other. 4. Which of the following is NOT done by satellite according to the passage? A. Sending information for weather forecasts. B Taking photographs of the Earth. C. Sending TV pictures to the Earth. D. Providing food for airplane pilots. 5. What’s the speed that the Earth rotates at? A. 35,880 kilometers per hour. B. 335,880 kilometers per hour. C. 11,000 kilometers per hour. D. 110,000 kilometers per hour. 6. What does the underlined word “This” in the third paragraph refer to? A. A satellite moves around the Earth forever. B. A rocket always keeps a satellite’s company. C. A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky. D. The satellite puts the rockets in the right position. 7. Which of the following statements about satellites is TRUE? A. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. B. Every time a satellite gets broken, it is thrown away. C. A broken satellite is never left in space. D. Broken satellites always crash into each other. 4. D 5. C 6. C 7. Thankfully, our parents understand and support us.” “I hesitated for a while because some friends think Faye and I are mad to give up so much. My wife Faye was so determined to keep to our plan,” said Matthew. They will leave this month and plan to start their travels in Sweden where they have friends. Faye said, “My older boys plot where we go next but we hope to see Europe and over two years travel as far as Japan, America, Bali and Thailand. We don’t plan to hire any tour guides. We just depend on a compass and local people to move in the right direction.” Faye, who posts on Instagram as a mother of five boys, added, “It is a risk because we are giving up so much. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage Site. I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist(薄雾), Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of seabirds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history. As if to stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries than most cities in Britain. At the Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No.1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the River Festival Liverpool attracts thousands of visitors, making the city a place of wonder. As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to end, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub. It is a monument(纪念碑) to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself. Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of Outstanding Universal Value. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore. 12. What can first catch visitors’ attention in Liverpool? A. Charming banks. B. Famous museums. C. Wonderful palaces. D. Attractive buildings. 13. How is the third paragraph mainly developed? A. By analyzing causes. B. By making comparisons. C. By following the order of time. D. By providing different examples. 14. Why does the author mention the Philharmonic pub in the fourth paragraph? A. To show Liverpool is a well-known city for its restaurants. B. To prove Liverpool is an impressive place full of attractions. C. To explain a pub is a wonderful place for visitors to relax themselves. D. To stress a pub is a perfect choice for visitors to end their journey. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. The universal value of Liverpool. B. The beautiful historic sites of Liverpool. C. The special cultural atmosphere of Liverpool. D. The author’s exciting experience in Liverpool. 12. D 13. D 14. B 15. It is a monument(纪念碑) to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.(当我的旅行即将结束时,我选择在利物浦著名的爱乐酒吧休息。 根据第一段“Liverpool, my hometown, is a unique city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage Site.(我的家乡利物浦是一个独特的城市。 和最后一段中的“It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.(这是一个宝库,有很多秘密供世界探索。)” As our human population and resource need grow, we are leaving less and less room for wildlife. Watch me, the champion, hit the ball. It will travel off to infinity (无穷大)!” Emily ran like the wind to the ball and kicked it so hard that it flew over the fence of her garden and into the neighbor’s house. There was a sharp cracking sound. “Uh oh... what did you do?” Nora asked, feeling afraid. “L…I don’t know. Oh no! 1 think I broke my neighbor’s window,” Emily cried as she dashed across her garden and hid behind some cherry bushes. Nora faded into thin air. Terror was written all over Emily’s face. She saw the neighbor, Mr. Mason, picking up the pieces of sharp glass. There was anger, as well as panic, on his face. The sun was setting. Emily knew that it was not secure for her to stay out so late. Eventually, as the light faded, she returned home, keeping her eyes wide open for the neighbor. Her heart was shaking as she cautiously arrived home. Her mother saw the sweat on her face. She knew, her daughter had done something wrong. Mother sat next to Emily on the comfortable sofa and then asked, “Emily, are you okay? Is something wrong?” Emily held her mother’s hands. Her eyes were wet with tears. “Mom, I did something bad, but it was unintentional. I hit the football so hard that it flew out of our garden and broke Mr. Mason’s window.” Mother listened to her patiently as she calmed her and wiped her tears away. Then she held a sharp-tipped pencil. “Do you know why pencils have erasers?” Mother asked, surprising Emily since she wasn’t expecting such a question. “To erase our mistakes, ” Emily replied. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With her heart beating fast, Emily walked up to her neighbor’s front door. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “To erase our mistakes,” Emily replied. “That’s right!” her mother said. “So, when we make mistakes in life, we can and should fix them immediately. Then it is no longer a mistake.” Realizing what her mother wanted to say, Emily hung her head. “Mom, you are right. Although it’s quite embarrassing, saying sorry is the only way I can make up for my mistake.” Mom stroked Emily’s hair gently, her eyes sparkling with approval and encouragement. At this, a ripple of bravery surged over Emily, motivating her to get out of the house. With her heart beating fast, Emily walked up to her neighbor’s front door. She took a deep breath before gathering enough courage to knock on the door. When Mr. Mason opened the door, she dared not look into his eyes. “Mr. Mason, I’m terribly sorry that I broke your window when playing football,” she murmured. Mr. Mason smiled and let her in, saying, “Emily, I truly appreciate your honesty. Just forget about my window.” Hearing his words, Emily breathed a sigh of relief and offered to fix the broken window the next day. 词汇激活 行为类 ①修理:fix/repair ②垂下:hang/lower ③意识到:realize/be aware of 情绪类 ①松了一口气:breathed a sigh of relief/feel relieved ②令人尴尬的:embarrassing/awkward 【点睛】【高分句式1】Mom stroked Emily’s hair gently, her eyes sparkling with approval and encouragement. B. Taking photographs of the Earth. C This is the last Christmas that Faye and Matthew have spent in their house, which has already been sold. Faye and Matthew Gooding and their five young sons appear to have perfect lives. For the couple themselves, however, this “materially perfect world” was lacking in something—so now they are giving up all their possessions to travel around the world with their children. Most of their belongings have been given to their neighbors. Faye said, “It is a relief to get rid of so many possessions. Thankfully, our parents understand and support us.” “I hesitated for a while because some friends think Faye and I are mad to give up so much. When we told the older boys they were so excited that they were going to have so much time as a family. It made me realize the amount of toys or material possessions can’t replace time spent with our children. They’ve had to give away so many toys, bikes and books. My wife Faye was so determined to keep to our plan,” said Matthew. They will leave this month and plan to start their travels in Sweden where they have friends. Faye said “My older boys plot where we go next but we hope to see Europe and over two years travel as far as Japan, America, Bali and Thailand. We don’t plan to hire any tour guides. We just depend on a compass and local people to move in the right direction.” Faye, who posts on Instagram as a mother of five boys, added, “It is a risk because we are giving up so much. I, however, even plan to quit my job after the travel. We can’t wait to spend more time with our sons without the stresses of everyday routines. We don’t know what will happen, but we do know if we didn’t do this we would always regret it.” 8. How will Faye and Matthew cover the travel costs? A. By selling their house. B. A diary D Liverpool, my hometown, is a unique city. As you would expect from such a city there are restaurants serving food from around the world. D.
