While I was working at a French school, I was often preparing my work in the staff room. Sometimes I would hear the school secretary talking. At first I thought she was talking to me, as there was no one else in the room except me, so I tried to respond to her. However, I soon realized that in fact, she was talking to herself. I noticed a lot of people do this in France. In the UK, people might think you’re a bit strange if you talk to yourself at work, but there it seemed quite normal. It really did confuse me at times, because I was not sure whether people were talking to me or just talking to themselves.
Another area of confusion involved the French language. In French, there are two ways to say “you”: “tu” is the informal form while “vous” is the formal form. This is an aspect of French which, even now, I do not really understand. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone vous unless they were my family or friends. So I was surprised that virtually everyone in France used the informal tu all the time. School children used tu when they stayed with their teachers and all the staff called the head teacher tu. But I continued to use vous because I didn’t want people to think I was impolite.
As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in France pupils do not wear a uniform. It was a culture shock for me to see children wear Spiderman T-shirts and baggy (宽松的) blue jeans in the classroom.
I found the differences puzzling at times, but I couldn’t deny what a great opportunity it was to live and work in another country. The UK and France are only separated by a small channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two countries.
4. In the staff room, the school secretary ________.
A. always chatted online
B. interrupted the writer
C. talked to herself often
D. always made speeches
5. Why did the author always use “vous” when talking to others?
A. She tried to be polite to others.
B. She couldn’t tell tu from vous at all.
C. She didn’t have close friends in France.
D. She couldn’t understand French very well.
6. How did the author feel seeing French kids wear Spiderman T-shirts at school?
A. Pleased. B. Embarrassed.
C. Frightened. D. Surprised.
7. What made the author feel happy to live in France?
A. Experiencing different cultures.
B. Communicating in an informal way.
C. Traveling along the channel of the sea.
D. Having a chance to work with French teachers.

Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in various sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport.
Researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland.
All participants were required to answer questions on height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed (评估) using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, and the average well-being score for all participants was 17.
The researchers divided sports participation into low (0 — 3.5 hours a week), average (3.6 — 10.5 hours), high (10.6 — 17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants in the average group. The researchers found that the highest well-being scores were gotten by participants who carried cut around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but exercising beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores.
Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been connected with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-respect in teenagers.
The researchers suggest that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about their well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can provide information for guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers.
8 What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Useless. B. Important. C. Reasonable. D. Harmful.
9. What do the researchers find out?
A. Low sports participation causes overweight.
B. The sports participation is divided into four levels.
C. The highest well-being scores are gotten in the “high” group.
D. The average well-being score of teenagers between 16 and 20 in Switzerland is 17.
10. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A research paper. B. A health magazine. C. A business report. D. A fitness diary.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Measures to improve teenagers’ well-being.
B. Concerns of physicians about teenagers’ well-being.
C. Importance of physical activities on teenagers’ well-being.
D. Relationship between sports participation and teenagers’ well-being.
D
When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well.
Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones, and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. “We really want to help farming and agriculture. It’s super-important to America and our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the benefits is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).”
The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the runoff water. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need — and what they don’t.
However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.
“We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well and fly low enough that it is not using up all of its power,” she says. “The fields are a couple hundred acres, so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field.”
Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will help the farmers and the environment.
12. Why do students from York College of Pennsylvania build the drone?
A. To enrich students’ amusement activities.
B. To help farming and agriculture.
C. To confirm the students’ abilities.
D. To obtain more information about the drone.
13. What particular usage is the drone designed for?
A. Measuring the areas of the fields. B. Assisting to monitor the state of crops.
C. Spreading proper quantities of pesticides. D. Helping to determine the chemicals needed.
14. What technical issue of the drone shall be solved?
A. Its camera version. B. Its durability and control.
C. Its flying ability. D. Its further service.
15. What can best describe the students?
A. Responsible and creative. B. Experienced and generous.
C. Brilliant and grateful. D. Reliable and realistic.

Last summer, I went to Los Angeles to visit him. My uncle chatted with us outside while he was smoking. And then my aunt called him into the house. He left his cigarette (香烟) on one front door step so he could continue smoking it when he came back.
Mike was curious to see what smoking was really like, so he picked up the cigarette to check it out. He held it between two fingers as if he were an experienced smoker and asked me if I had ever smoked before. “No way,” I said in a loud voice. “Never let my dad know about it, or he’ll beat me up,” he said. I couldn’t believe what he did next. Mike put the cigarette into his mouth and began to smoke. The next thing you know, he was coughing his head off. It looked like he was about to throw up, but he still reached his hand out towards me to offer me the cigarette.“Come on,” he said. “It won’t hurt you. I think smoking is really cool.”

When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well.
Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating.
D To obtain more information about the drone.
13. What particular usage is the drone designed for?
A. Measuring the areas of the fields. B. Assisting to monitor the state of crops.
C. Spreading proper quantities of pesticides. D. Helping to determine the chemicals needed.
14. What technical issue of the drone shall be solved?
A. Its camera version. B. Its durability and control.
C. Its flying ability. D. Its further service.
15. What can best describe the students?
A. Responsible and creative. B. Experienced and generous.
C. Brilliant and grateful. D. Reliable and realistic.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. A

In addition, plastic pollution is also severe, and what we can help is to buy glass-bottled water rather than buying plastic-bottled water. Finally, saving water is also one of the effective ways to protect the environment. When we don’t use tap water, we should turn off the tap immediately instead of keeping the water flowing all the time. I believe that starting from the small things around us, we will have a great impact on the environment.

Mike, my cousin, and I are very close and would share any secret with each other. He is a little naught (顽皮的) sometimes although my uncle, Mike’s dad, is very strict with him.
I stood there, having no idea whether I should have a try. Then I remembered the advertisement that I had seen on TV a lady was so addicted to cigarettes that she had got really sick. I did not want my cousin to be like that at all.

【答案】
I made up my mind to do something and walked towards him. After taking the cigarette from him, I took two steps back, and I said strictly to him, “Do you really think this is cool? I don’t think so. I’m not going to try, and it does hurt you now.” But he ran up to me and snatched the cigarette quickly, and asked me pitifully, “Will you tell my father?” I shook my head, because I know it would do harm to his health. He stood there sadly, without knowing what to do next.
Just then my uncle came back and couldn’t find his cigarette. After seeing the cigarette in Mike’s hand, my uncle knew what had happened. Suddenly, he pinched Mike’s nose and covered his mouth so that Mike couldn’t breathe when Mike didn’t notice it. Mike shook his hands fiercely, but my uncle kept doing this for 1 minute. Upon Mike’s getting released and breathing in air desperately, my uncle said, “Remember this feeling. If you keep on smoking, you won’t be able to breathe sooner or later. Don’t imitate me. I’ll quit smoking from now on”. Mike gave him a big hug.
