Tang Shangjun, a 93-year-old man, retired (退休) from teaching in 1987. However, his role as a teacher didn’t stop there.
In 1997 Tang returned to his hometown—Wuhan Village of Anhua County in Yiyang City, Hunan Province. He soon found that there were many left-behind children in the village and no one helped them when they had trouble with their homework. Many children even left school after losing interest in studies. Tang decided to offer after-school classes to the children in his own wooden house. And he did it all for free.
As there aren’t many learning materials (材料) in the village, Tang often goes to the county, even Beijing to buy some for the students. He never stops learning himself. He reads books and takes notes every day. Sometimes he even goes to some local schools to learn new teaching methods (方法) from the teachers there.
“If you want to give a bowl of water to the students, you must have a bucket (桶) of it,” Tang said.
Tang is able to teach many subjects, like Chinese, English and maths, from primary to high school. Thanks to his help, in the past 23 years, more than 50 students have got into university. The students love him so much that they call him “Grandpa Tang”.

Do you hear of dodos (渡渡鸟)? The dodo was a kind of bird that was very large. You might not think it was a bird at all because dodo could not fly. It was a member of the chicken family. It lived happily until people arrived. Sailors (水手) in Europe found those birds in the 16th century (世纪) on Mauritius Island in the Indian Ocean.
When the sailors found the strange birds that could not fly, they were surprised. The Europeans on Mauritius Island and the pigs they brought with them found the birds very delicious. So a large number of dodos were killed and no living dodos were found on the island in the following years. Later, the samples (标本) of some dodos were brought to England in the 17th century for the future study.
In fact, people killed all the dodos. This was how the phrase “as dead as a dodo” came. It teaches us a big lesson. If we are not able to get along with nature, we will lose more things than we would expect. And we should stop the activities that will be bad for the environment or other animals.
12. When did sailors in Europe find dodos?
A. In the 15th century. B. In the 16th century.
C. In the 17th century. D. In the 18th century.

A. Fly like a bird. B. Disappear forever.
C. Eat like a pig. D. Walk quietly.
15. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

14. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?
A. Fly like a bird. B. Disappear forever.
C. Eat like a pig. D. Walk quietly.
