Age really is just a number for Charly Bancarel, the 94-year-old running in this year’s Paris Marathon Pour Tous. The elderly man will be the oldest participant in the race in 2024! This actually won’t be the first time that Charly has set a record like this. In 2023, he also became the oldest runner to complete the Paris Marathon!
It took Charly Bancarel over seven hours to complete the 26.2-mile race. Although he was one of the final hundred participants to cross the finish line, this was still an incredible feat at 93 years old!
What’s especially impressive is that Charly Bancarel didn’t even get into running until he was 55 years old. He completed his first marathon when he was 70 and would go on to finish over 10 of these races in total!
Now, the 94-year-old is getting ready for the Paris 2024 Marathon Pour Tous, or Marathon For All, This version of the race is much more open to the public. For the first time, the city will invite non-professional athletes to participate in an Olympic Marathon event of their own. There will also be a shorter route for those unable to complete the whole thing.
“Paris 2024 promised to revolutionise the Olympic and Paralympic Games experience for the public,” reads the Olympic Games Paris 2024 website. “Many people shared a dream that is now a reality: with the Paris 2024 Mass Participation Marathon, amateur athletes will be able to run the Olympic marathon route at night, enabling as many people as possible to follow in the footsteps of outstanding athletes.”
Honor to Charly Bancarel for not letting his age keep him from going after his goals! We’ll be supporting him during the race.
4. What does the underlined word “feat” in paragraph 2 mean?
A Skill. B. Discovery. C. Source. D. Achievement.
5. When did Charly Bancarel finish his first marathon race?
A. In his 50s. B. In his 60s. C. In his 70s. D. In his 80s.
6. What can be inferred about the Paris 2024 Marathon?
A. It will take place during the day. B. It’s part of the Paralympic Games.
C It will attract many amateur athletes. D. It’s specifically for professional athletes.
7. What does the Olympic Games Paris 2024 mainly focus on?
A. Income. B. Dream. C. Safety. D. Health.

In the early 2000s, a great white shark named Nicole swam about 20, 000 kilometers from South Africa to Australia then back again within nine months. The first arm of this journey eastwards across the Indian Ocean included the fastest known transoceanic return migration among marine animals.
On November 7, 2003, researchers attached an electronic tracker to her fin (鳍) while in the waters of South Africa. After completing the first leg of the journey, the tracker fell off near Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia and relayed (转发) the data to a satellite.
It showed that she had swum from South Africa to Australia, around 11,100 kilometers, in just 99 days. The researchers thought this would be the end of the story, but she was spotted again on August 20, 2004 — all the way back in South Africa.
“This is one of the most significant discoveries about white shark ecology and suggests we might have to rewrite the life history of this powerful fish,” said Dr. Ramon Bonfil, “More importantly, Nicole has shown us that separate populations of great white sharks may be more directly connected than previously thought, and that wide-ranging white sharks which are nationally protected in places such as South Africa and Australia are much easier to be hurt by human fishing in the open oceans than we previously thought.”
Great white sharks are some of the world’s toughest travelers, regularly seen traversing extreme routes around the world’s oceans. They don’t gently wander on their voyages either; the iconic species can complete some of the fastest transoceanic migrations ever seen by marine animals. While most of the journey was made at the ocean’s surface, Nicole regularly dived into the Indian Ocean basin at a depth of 980 meters. In 2005, this was a record breaker for great whites, but scientists have since found they can dive as deep as 1,128 meters.
8. What was unique about Nicole’s journey from South Africa to Australia?
A. She swam at a constant depth. B. She swam without stopping.
C. She was tracked the whole way. D. She created the fastest shark migration.
9. How did researchers track Nicole’s journey?
A. By studying sharks’ habits. B. With an electronic tracker.
C. With satellite images alone. D. Through the observation of boats.
10. Why was Nicole’s return to South Africa significant?
A. It was unexpected by researchers. B. It proved sharks’ ecology improved.
C. It showed that she disliked Australia. D. It indicated a non-migratory pattern.
11. What can we learn about Great white sharks from the last paragraph?
A. They are tough to track. B. They love swimming slowly.
C. They live in the Indian Ocean. D. They have great diving ability.

Can a robot help speed up Christmas deliveries? The city of Helsinki is finding out. A trial in Finland’s capital is using a delivery robot in two neighborhoods to see if this innovative, autonomous, and emission-free method could help with the holiday stress.
The HeRo robot that is being tested, is a project of Forum Virium, an innovative Finnish company. The trial will be running through the end of December 2023. The goal is to show how packages can be quickly delivered to people’s homes with great accuracy even during the holiday season.
HeRo is not just a delivery robot, it’s electric and operates without any dangerous emissions, plus it is self-navigating and talks. The delivery robot was manufactured by the French robotics firm TwinswHeel and uses an interface created by the Finnish company LMAD. The four-wheeled vehicle can carry up to 300 kilograms and can travel up to 20 kilometers on just one charge of its lithium (锂) battery pack. HeRo uses a combination of GPS and onboard sensors (传感器) to run through the city’s streets.
The HeRo can deliver multiple orders in each run. Every order will be in an individual locker and customers will be able to open their own locker electronically. The robot is delivering packages from a small number of retailers — in just one hour — to residents of the Ruoholahti and North Jätkäsaari areas. No other package delivery service is faster or greener.
This is not the robot’s first time on the streets of Helsinki. The first phase trial was held from May through August 2023 and carried packages from Würth Center — a service provider that offers tools and supplies for industry—to nearby worksites, according to Forum Virium’s website. The trials are part of the international URBANE project, which is looking for new innovative and environmentally friendly ways to improve logistics (物流) for both companies and residents. New trials will be carried out in cities in Spain and Greece. Zero emission delivery via autonomous robots is an idea that should be implemented around the globe.
12. What is the main aim of the trial?
A. To test HeRo’s speed. B. To test GPS technology.
C. To promote TwinswHeel. D. To improve holiday deliveries.
13. Why is HeRo considered green?
A It was made in France. B. It uses lithium batteries.
C. It carries multiple orders. D. It runs without emissions.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of the HeRo?
A. Unclear. B. Hopeful. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Emission-free Method Proves Popular
B. A Delivery Robot Improves Service Quality
C. Helsinki Takes the Lead in Holiday Deliveries
D. Robots Are Helping to Deliver Christmas Packages

Every morning, I looked forward to my walk with Max, my loyal dog. Max was always excited as we stepped out of the house.
One sunny morning, as we walked down the familiar streets, we saw a little boy sitting on the roadside, crying. Max, being the friendly dog he was, immediately ran over to the boy, his tail still wagging. I followed, curious to see what was wrong.
“Hey there,” I said gently. “Is everything okay?”
The boy looked up, wiping his tears. “I lost my toy car,” he sniffed (抽鼻子). “It rolled down the drain (下水道), and I can’t get it back.”
Max gently pushed the boy with his nose, making him smile a little. “I’m sorry to hear that. What’s your name? “I asked.
“Tommy,” he replied, looking a bit calmer now that Max was there.
“Well, Tommy, let’s see if we can help you find your toy car,” I said, determined to turn his day around.
Together, we walked over to the drain where Tommy pointed. I looked down carefully and saw the toy car stuck just out of reach. I looked around and spotted a long stick. Using it, I carefully moved the car until it was close enough for Tommy to grab.
“Got it!” Tommy exclaimed, his face lighting up with joy as he held his toy car again.
“Great! I’m glad we could help,” I said, smiling. “Sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of effort and kindness.”
Tommy patted Max. “Thank you! You and Max are really nice.”
As we continued our walk, I thought about how such a small act of kindness had made a big difference in Tommy’s day. Max seemed to understand too, looking up at me with his big, happy eyes. It reminded me of a lesson my parents had always taught me: helping others, even in small ways, can have a big impact.

D 9. B 10. A 11. D

12 What is the main aim of the trial?
A. To test HeRo’s speed. B. To test GPS technology.
C. To promote TwinswHeel. D. To improve holiday deliveries.
13. Why is HeRo considered green?
A. It was made in France. B. It uses lithium batteries.
C. It carries multiple orders. D. It runs without emissions.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of the HeRo?
A. Unclear. B. Hopeful. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Emission-free Method Proves Popular
B. A Delivery Robot Improves Service Quality
C. Helsinki Takes the Lead in Holiday Deliveries
D. Robots Are Helping to Deliver Christmas Packages
D 13. D 14. B 15. D

Five ways to slow down and enjoy life more
Here are a few practical ways to slow down.
Pay attention to what gets your attention. We think multitasking will help us get more done. ___16___. One way to deal with this is to spend some time considering where your attention is directed.
Be present. In our busy lives, it feels almost impossible to focus on what’s in front of us. That’s why you should take some time to identify what gets in the way and keeps you from being present. When you do that, it becomes easier to guard your attention. ___17___.
Put the cell phone away. ___18___. Don’t give it the power to steal your time, attention and peace of mind. You’ve to set boundaries around your phone so you can control it — not the other way around.
Focus on the people in front of you. ___19___. As a result, we miss relationships, and those are super important. You need to stop, slow down and spend quality time with them. The connection that comes from those moments will help you slow down and be at peace.

根据上文的“Pay attention to what gets your attention. We think multitasking will help us get more done. (注意那些吸引你注意力的东西。我们认为多任务处理可以帮助我们完成更多的事情。)”和下文的“One way to deal with this is to spend some time considering where your attention is directed. (解决这个问题的一个方法是花点时间考虑一下你的注意力应该集中在哪里。)”可知,上文提到我们认为多任务处理会让我们完成更多工作,但下文提到我们需要花时间去考虑我们的注意力在哪里,这暗示了多任务处理可能并不如我们想象的那样有效。因此,D选项“However, it really leaves us stressed and tired (然而,这真的让我们感到压力和疲惫)”能承上启下,符合语境。
In our busy lives, it feels almost impossible to focus on what’s in front of us. That’s why you should take some time to identify what gets in the way and keeps you from being present. When you do that, it becomes easier to guard your attention. (活在当下。在我们忙碌的生活中,几乎不可能把注意力集中在我们面前的事情上。这就是为什么你应该花一些时间来确定是什么阻碍了你,让你无法活在当下。当你这样做的时候,你就更容易集中注意力了。)”可知,本空要说跟“活在当下”相关话题。因此,B选项中的“Thus you can live in the moment (这样你就能活在当下)”是一个合理的结论,能承接上文,符合题意。故选B。
根据上文的“Put the cell phone away. (把手机收起来。)”可知,放下手机,不要让手机控制你的生活。因此,E选项“You have to stop letting your phone ruin your life (你必须停止让手机毁掉你的生活)”表达了放下手机的重要性,能承接上文,符合题意。故选E。
根据下文的“As a result, we miss relationships, and those are super important. You need to stop, slow down and spend quality time with them. The connection that comes from those moments will help you slow down and be at peace. (因此,我们错过了人际关系,而这是非常重要的。你需要停下来,慢下来,和他们共度美好时光。来自这些时刻的联系将帮助你放慢脚步,保持平静。)”可知,人们在忙碌中往往会忽略与他人建立关系。因此,F选项“When we rush through life, we often push people to the side (当我们匆匆度过生活时,我们往往会把人推到一边)”强调了人们在忙碌中容易忽略人际关系的问题,能引起下文,符合题意。故选F。
根据下文“If you want your world to slow down, you might make some progress by slowing down your car. Forcing yourself to limit the speed and experiencing slowness on a physical level will help you slow down mentally and emotionally. (如果你想让你的世界慢下来,你可以通过让你的车慢下来来取得一些进步。强迫自己限制速度,在身体层面上体验缓慢会帮助你在精神上和情感上慢下来。)”可知,限制速度是一个有效的方法来放慢生活的节奏。因此,A选项“Limit the speed (限制速度)”能概括本段主旨,符合题意。故选A。

故填where。
结合句意可知,“walk through a short trail”与“come to a viewing platform”为并列关系,所以此处使用并列连词and连接并列谓语。故填and。
故填the。
故填to see。

Later that day, we walked past an elderly lady struggling with her grocery bags. She looked frail and tired, her arms shaking under the weight of the heavy bags. Max, ever the observant one, immediately stopped in his tracks and turned his head towards the lady. Without hesitation, I approached her and offered my assistance. “Ma’am, would you like some help with those bags? They look quite heavy.” She smiled gratefully, her eyes lighting up with relief. “Oh, thank you so much, kind sir.” Together, we walked the lady to her front door, where she thanked us profusely. As we turned to leave, I couldn’t help but feel a warm glow inside, knowing that we had made a small but meaningful difference in someone’s life.
“Helping others is important,” I replied, feeling a sense of pride. Our encounters with Tommy and the elderly lady had reinforced the values my parents had instilled in me. Max, with his unwavering loyalty and innate sense of compassion, had been my constant companion on this journey of kindness. As we continued our walk, I realized that every small act of kindness, no matter how insignificant it may seem, had the power to ripple out and touch the lives of those around us.
