In the field of education technology, some apps might be getting too smart. There are more and more apps providing help for students.
PhotoMath
The new, seemingly magic app allows users to take pictures of a math problem, and then receive a step-by-step solution. It is now the number one free app on the App Store. A PhotoMath spokeswoman says educators have welcomed the app with positive reviews, but the software causes a lot of angry public discussion and disagreement. Why? It is because students can use it to cheat when doing their math homework.
iHomework
Whether you’re a high school student or a college student, there’s one thing you’ve got for sure: a lot of homework. iHomework can help you keep track of all your homework. It can help you arrange it in a particular order according to types, or based on deadlines.
Homework Helper
Chinese Internet search company Baidu has launched an app called Homework Helper with which students can get answers to homework. Users post a picture or type their homework questions onto online forum (论坛), and those who answer the questions can win e-coins that can be used to buy devices like laptops. The app has logged 5 million downloads, much to the concern of many parents who argue that the students spend less time thinking about challenging problems.
WolframAlpha
WolframAlpha is similar to PhotoMath, but it focuses on older students studying high levels of math and doesn’t support photos. The service also produces step-by-step solutions to advanced topics, making it a popular tool for college students.
21. What is the public’s worry about the app PhotoMath?
A. It can’t recognize pictures.
B. It doesn’t provide a step-by-step solution.
C. It makes cheating at homework more likely to happen.
D. It encourages students to use smart phones more frequently.
22. What can we learn about Homework Helper?
A. It is thought highly of by teachers.
B. It is unpopular among Chinese students.
C. Many parents think it harmful to children’s study.
D Answering questions on the app wastes students’ time.
23. Which app is the best choice if you want to deal with advanced math problems?
A. PhotoMath. B. iHomework. C. Homework Helper. D. WolframAlpha.

Street artists have the unique ability to turn the entire world into their canvas (画布). Artist David Zinn’s work is no different, as he masterfully uses his natural environment to bring his delightful creations to life.
Depending on the seasonal conditions around him, Zinn combines his character-filled chalk drawings with fallen leaves and more permanent landscape features, including rocks and sidewalk cracks.
Zinn’s drawings remind people of children’s book illustrations and often feature animals with adorable look. Even though he draws a variety of creatures, his art does feature some recurring (多次再现的) characters — including Sluggo, a tiny green animal; Philomena, a flying pig; and Nadine, a small but brave mouse.
Zinn chooses to draw his creations onto staircases, streetlamps, and other fixtures of urban life besides the flat sidewalks. The artist also uses optical illusions (视觉错觉) in his work, providing the appearance of bottomless chasms (大裂口) or holes in sidewalks for his characters to climb in or out of.
Zinn has been making characteristic chalk art around Ann Arbor, Michigan, since 1987. However, his drawings have attractive sidewalks all over the world.
Due to the materials that he uses and the fact that his art is often located in high-trafficked locations, all of Zinn’s chalk drawings are temporary, only lasting for as long as nature allows them to. However, this contributes to their uniqueness, as no two drawings will ever be the exact same.
In order to be viewed, Zinn’s work also forces people to look down and pay attention to the environment around them, which is more and more difficult in our ever-changing and increasingly connected world. However, his colorful creatures encourage people to stop and smell the roses, and find something lovely.
24. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A. Zinn is completely different from other street artists. B. The environment is part of Zinn’s drawings.
C. Zinn draws on sidewalks only in autumn. D. Flowers are the focus of Zinn’s works.
25. What can be learned from paragraph 3?
A. Zinn likes drawing lovely animals. B. Zinn only draws three characters.
C. Sluggo is a flying pig. D. Nadine is Zinn’s favourite character.
26. Which of the following best describes Zinn’s drawings?
A. Cheap but boring. B. Attractive but expensive.
C. Popular but meaningless. D. Temporary but creative.
27. What does Zinn’s work remind people to do according to the last paragraph?
A. Stay close to people around. B. Appreciate the beauty around us.
C. Buy roses on the way home. D. Face difficulties in our life.

A Japanese candy company has been making national news headlines for its idea to produce gummy candy (软糖) that tastes like an “imaginary fruit” called Kiraspika.
Last year was a great one for gummy candy producers, and the market continued to expand throughout 2023, with fruit-flavored (水果味的) gummies being the most popular. There are plenty of fruit flavors to choose from, but companies are still limited to the fruits that can be found in our world. However, what if someone started making candy that tastes like imaginary fruits? That was the strange idea that a Japanese sweets maker recently came up with. Two months ago, the company created a new type of gummy candy that tastes like fruit “Kiraspika no Mi”, an imaginary fruit with an original flavor, design, and even a story.
According to the story the star-shaped Kiraspika only grows in the mountainous area of Blue Knife, where temperatures drop to —50℃ in winter. It is very difficult to get. Everything about Kiraspika was invented in the fruit lab where its flavor experts mixed various existing flavors to create a totally original one that tastes like nothing you’ve ever eaten.
According to its designers, the Kiraspika-flavored gummy candy has a unique sweetness mixed with a kind of sourness (酸味), but many of those who have tried it have their own description of the taste.
To some, the Kiraspika flavor can be compared to that of an energy drink, while others say it tastes a bit like a spicy apple. It is the mystery of the flavor and the personal explanations that make this product liked by many people.
28. What does the underlined word “expand” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Disappear. B. Shorten. C. Struggle. D. Grow.
29. What is a feature of Kiraspika?
A. It can’t be found in real life. B. It grows on the plain.
C. It can be planted easily. D. It needs high temperatures.
30. What makes the new type of gummy candy popular?
A. Its shape. B. Its taste. C. Its origin. D. Its designer.
31. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A news report. B. A health magazine.
C. A biology book. D. An old story.

While video games used to be considered harmful to young people, various studies have also proved the positive effects of computer games, especially action video games.
Angela Pasqualotto from the University of Trento and her team have now tested whether such video games can help primary school children learn to read. They’ve developed such a computer game called Skies of Manawak.
“Reading involves many important skills, including knowing how to move our eyes on the page or how to use our working memory to connect words into a meaningful sentence,” explains Pasqualotto. “It’s known that action video games improve these still, such as vision, general attention, working memory and cognitive (认知的) flexibility.”
For their study, the researchers tested 150 school children between the ages of eight and twelve. Half of them played the game Skies of Manawak two hours a week for six weeks. The other half, the control group, received the educational game Scratch, which is intended to teach children the basics of programming. Both games are basically to train the executive (执行的) functions of the brain.
“We started by examining the children’s ability to read words, non-words and paragraphs and their attention control,” explains Pasqualotto. “After six weeks, these skills were tested again.”
“We found a seven-fold improvement in attention control in the children who played our action video game compared to the control group,” said Pasqualotto. The team also saw significant improvements in reading speed and accuracy among Skies of Manawak players—there were no improvements in the kids who played Scratch. It’s also worth mentioning that the children’s reading skills have improved, although the game itself doesn’t contain any reading exercises.
“For the study, we also carried out three further evaluation tests six, twelve and eighteen months after the training. Each time, the trained children performed better than the control group,” adds Pasqualotto.
Of course, while the study suggests some benefit in action video games, it does not mean that one must do nothing else.
32. What did the 150 school children do in the study?
A They received training on programming. B. They finished some reading ability tests.
C. They created video games on their own. D. They played games with reading exercises.
33. What does the further evaluation suggest about Skies of Manawak?
A. Its influence on reading skills is not temporary. B. The study results about it seem to be untrustworthy.
C. Reading ability can’t be improved with its assistance. D. Kids need consistent reading training after playing it.
34. What is the author’s opinion on action video games?
A. They have nothing to do with reading. B. People shouldn’t get addicted to them.
C. School kids are supposed to avoid them. D. They should be replaced with Scratch.
35. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the text?
A. Video Games Prove Harmless to Young People at School
B. Time for Children to Play Video Games Should Be Limited
C. Children Easily Fall in Love With Reading in a Video Game
D. Playing Action Video Games Improves Kids’ Reading Skills

Now I am a famous writer and public speaker who always believes in the great power of language. I still remember how the very first speech that I gave changed my life more than I could have ever imagined.
When I was in sixth grade my teacher, Mrs Lin, encouraged me to sign up for the school speech contest. I was pretty bad at the rehearsal (排练). I felt quite nervous and afraid of failure. Therefore, after class, I ran to the office to find Mrs Lin. Hearing what I said, Mrs Lin sounded puzzled. “You’ve put your heart and soul into practicing it all these past few weeks.” “Yes,” I wanted to say. All I had dreamed of was to represent my school on that stage and be the best public speaker ever. Instead, I whispered, “I messed up big time at rehearsal today. I…I’ve been messing up regularly... a lot. I want to quit.” My words came fast on each other’s heels. “Can you tell the judges I’ve been seriously ill, please?” I sounded hopeless.
Mrs Lin was quiet for several moments. “Making up lies is not how we solve problems, Lucy,” she finally said. “You are not the person to shy away from a challenge.” I nodded uncertainly. Then she took out a book about Phoenix. She hoped that Phoenix could give me courage. During reading, Phoenix’s story of bravery and her fight for education fascinated me. Her determination and courage in the face of challenges deeply moved me. Inspired by her story, I decided that my speech would be about Phoenix and the importance of education for everyone.
As the day of the contest approached, I was still struggling with my fears. I knew I had to overcome them, not just for myself but also for the message I wanted to convey through Phoenix’s story. I decided to take a different approach to my preparation. I started by researching more about Phoenix, her life, her struggles, and her devotion to education. During this process, I also sought feedback from Mrs Lin. She listened attentively to my drafts and offered constructive comments. Her guidance was invaluable, helping me to shape a speech that was not only informative but also emotionally rich.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing.

For millions of Americans, the show was their window to the natural world. Gowdy, an active environmentalist, was a member of the conservation hall of fame international.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27. B

According to the story, the star-shaped Kiraspika only grows in the mountainous area of Blue Knife, where temperatures drop to —50℃ in winter.

A. They received training on programming.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. D

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Now I am a famous writer and public speaker who always believes in the great power of language. I still remember how the very first speech that I gave changed my life more than I could have ever imagined.
When I was in sixth grade, my teacher, Mrs Lin, encouraged me to sign up for the school speech contest.

【答案】 The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing. The lecture hall was filled with students and teachers. As I began to speak, I saw encouraging smiles from Mrs Lin and my friends, which gave me the confidence to continue. I talked about Phoenix’s amazing journey, her challenges, and her great devotion to education. I described how, despite the challenges she faced, Phoenix continued to work hard. I concluded my speech by encouraging everyone to take inspiration from Phoenix and to strive for a better future through working hard. At last, my speech was met with loud applause.
Thanks to Mrs Lin, my dream was coming true. I not only won the contest but also got closer to my dream. I knew that without Mrs Lin, I would not have been successful. I made a promise to myself: to carry forward the lessons of courage that Mrs Lin had given. I would use my voice to empower others, to echo the stories that needed to be told, and to honor the guider who had set me on this path. The journey had just begun, and I was ready to embrace it with open arms and an open heart.
