I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I’m driving by, late for my early morning shift. I decide to stop and offer her a ride. Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car. I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car, she is smiling and thanks me. I was late for work that day, but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I’m out driving in bad weather. If there’s someone at a bus stop, especially if it’s an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask if they need a ride. Once, a young doctor jumped in. She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and, for the first time, I was able to help someone who performs miracles (奇迹) on a daily basis. That felt good. But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation. I do tend to ask a lot of questions: where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind. Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat. We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over. “What a shame!” I often think when they hop out, as the stories were just getting started. Now, as retirement (退休) approaches, I believe I have found my calling. I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another-or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour. As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop. Perhaps there will be somebody who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride. I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers. 11.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about? A.How the author started offering rides. B.The value of the author’s actions. C.An old lady who impressed the author. D.An accident that happened 40 years ago. 12.What does the underlined phrase “pull over” mean in the text? A.Start. B.Stop. C.End. D.Quit. 13.What does the author like most about her ride offers? A.Helping people who contribute to society. B.People accepting her offer without hesitation. C.Chatting with her passengers. D.Making friends with her passengers. 14.What does the author plan to do? A.Become a taxi driver after retirement. B.Continue driving people to their destinations. C.Wait to be offered a ride at a bus stop. D.Share her stories with more people. 15.What message does the author want to convey? A.Elderly people need more care and support. B.It is important to find a purpose in life. C.Offering rides to strangers involves risks. D.Always believe in the goodness in people. B It’s a common belief that fish can’t remember anything for longer than seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that every moment in their lives would be like seeing the world for the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have much better memories than we used to think. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They took the fish out and then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. But there was no clear evidence until the latest findings. Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains (容纳) safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives in danger,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science. So next time you are watching your pet fish from outside the tank, perhaps you should feel close to them——they may remember who you are. 16.We often feel sorry for fish because ________. A.they have good memories B.they can only remember things for a short time C.they are often used for research D.every moment in their lives is old 17.Why did the researchers carry out the research? A.To know if fish can find food easily. B.To find out if fish have better memories. C.To tell us fish can live for days without water. D.To show fish can live long without eating things. 18.What does the underlined word “tank” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.A kind of fish food. B.A kind of hiding place. C.Something used to keep food. D.A container for keeping fish. 19.Which is TRUE according to Trevor Hamilton? A.Fish know where to get food. B.It’s easy for fish to live in the wild. C.A good memory can make fish safer in the wild. D.Fish are always in danger when they look for food. 20.What’s the purpose of this passage? A.To tell people that fish can’t remember anything. B.To show a new study about fish. C.To explain why good memory is good for fish. D.To tell people fish have much better memories than they used to think. C Air pollution is one of the world’s invisible killers. It causes seven million deaths a year, making it the largest single environmental health risk. In cities, air pollution is particularly serious. More than 80% of people live in the areas where pollution levels are beyond WHO limits. One well-established way to reduce air pollution is to plant trees, as their leaves catch and absorb harmful particulates (微粒). But planting new trees is not always a good choice for lack of enough space. That’s why the “City Tree”, a mobile tree which removes pollutants from the air, has been becoming popular in cities around the world, including Oslo, Paris, Brussels and Hong Kong. Each City Tree is just under 4 meters tall, nearly 3 meters wide and 2.19 meters deep, acting as a chair or a bench. A screen is included for information or advertising. Berlin-based Green City Organization explains that its invention has the environmental benefit of up to 275 actual trees. But the City Tree isn’t, in fact, a tree at all—it’s a moss culture “Moss cultures have a much larger leaf surface area than any other plant. That means we can catch more pollutants,” said Zhengliang Wu, co-founder of Green City Organization. The huge surfaces of moss in each tree can remove dust, NO2 and O3 gases from the air. It requires very little care: solar panels provide electricity, while rainwater is collected into a container and then sent into the soil. To monitor the health of the moss, the City Tree has sensors which measure soil humidity (湿度), temperature and water quality. “We also have pollution sensors inside the trees, which help monitor the local air quality and tell us how efficient the tree is,” Wu said. Its creators say that each City Tree is able to absorb around 250 grams of particulate matter a day and contributes to removing 480 tons of CO2 a year. 21.What is the City Tree? A.It is an ordinary tree growing leavers. B.It is a mobile tree offering electricity. C.It is a mobile tree providing rainwater. D.It is a moss culture absorbing pollutants. 22.Why is the City Tree becoming popular in cities? A.It takes up less space. B.It is very easy to move. C.It requires very little care. D.It can be used for advertisement. 23.What does the City Tree depend on to work? A.Soil and rainwater. B.Solar panels and sensors. C.Temperature and humidity. D.Moss culture and management. 24.Which of the following statements is right according to the text? A.The City Tree needs a lot of care. B.The City Tree has environmental benefits as actual trees. C.Pollution sensors in the tress can help protect the environment. D.Planting new trees is a good choice to fight against air pollution in the city. 25.What can be the future of City Trees according to the text? A.Pressing. B.Confusing. C.Promising. D.Worrying. (共 5 小题, 每小题2分) If you are feeling that life just cannot be any worse for you, it can be challenging to think positive thoughts. 26 Here are a few examples for you to practice. 根据“That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I’m out driving in bad weather.” 故选A。 12. 根据“if it’s an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask if they need a ride.” 根据“But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation.” 根据“I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another-or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.” 根据“I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.” D。 B It’s a common belief that fish can’t remember anything for longer than seven seconds. 根据第一段“It may seem sad to think that every moment in their lives would be like seeing the world for the first time.” 根据第一段最后一句“A new study has found that fish have much better memories than we used to think.” 根据第二段“In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food.” 根据第四段最后一句“If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains (容纳) safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives in danger”可知如果鱼能够记住某个区域含有安全的食物,它们就能够回到那个区域而不会危及生命。故选C。 20. 根据第一段最后一句“A new study has found that fish have much better memories than we used to think.” D。 C Air pollution is one of the world’s invisible killers. D.Worrying. 根据“But the City Tree isn’t, in fact, a tree at all—it’s a moss culture…That means we can catch more pollutants”可知,“城市树”是一种吸收污染物的青苔培植,故选D。 22. 根据“But planting new trees is not always a good choice for lack of enough space.”及“Each City Tree is just under 4 meters tall, nearly 3 meters wide and 2.19 meters deep, acting as a chair or a bench”可知,由于缺乏足够的空间,种植新树并不总是一个好的选择,而每棵城市树都不到4米高,近3米宽,2.19米深,由此可推断“城市树”受欢迎是因为它不占空间,故选A。 23. 根据“It requires very little care: solar panels provide electricity, while rainwater is collected into a container and then sent into the soil.”及“To monitor the health of the moss, the City Tree has sensors which measure soil humidity (湿度), temperature and water quality”可知,靠太阳能电池板和传感器工作,故选B。 24. 根据“Berlin-based Green City Organization explains that its invention has the environmental benefit of up to 275 actual trees”可知,这个发明可以带来多达275棵树的环境效益,可以推断出城市树具有环境效益,故选B。 25. 根据“Its creators say that each City Tree is able to absorb around 250 grams of particulate matter a day and contributes to removing 480 tons of CO2 a year.” (共 5 小题, 每小题2分) If you are feeling that life just cannot be any worse for you, it can be challenging to think positive thoughts. 26 Here are a few examples for you to practice.
