B Jenny thinks she may have a partial solution to two of her country’s problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless. Chip waters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lays and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store. Where Jenny and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding (衬垫) and liners (衬里) from old coats to line the insides. It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof lightweight and easy to carry around”. Jenny told the Detroit News. Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags. Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Jenny — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life — and her fellow volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says. And, of course, there’s the symbolism of rescuing bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental problem and poverty often go hand in hand. As Jenny told hourdetroit.com, “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.” 24. What did Jenny ask the snack lovers to do with their empty chip bags? A. To give them away to her. B. To throw them into the trash. C. To turn them into sleeping bags. D. To donate them to the homeless directly. 25. What do we know about the sleeping bag made by Chip Bag Project? A. Its size is adjustable. B. It is only made of old coats. C. It is convenient. D. It has the function of heating. 26. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. Poverty results from environmental problems. B. Jenny started the project mainly to raise money. C. Jenny’s project made 110 sleeping bags per month. D. The aim of the project is more than social issues. 27. Which words can best describe Jenny? A. Talented and brave. B. Generous and creative. C. Selfless and modest. D. Hardworking and loyal. C With nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas coming from all types of transportation, can we keep ourselves off gas-powered vehicles to avoid the worst effects? As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future – that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero- emission ( 排放) planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there. Cars and trucks are undergoing their greatest improvement since the automobile’s (汽车) existence more than a century ago. Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived. Electricity has the advantage that it works without smell and with less noise. Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them. The price is about $10,000 above the gas-powered one, but Ford says the electric model will cost much less to maintain. Everything creating a green revolution on the ground is of limited help in the sky for the time being. High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles. No battery yet invented can power, say, a Boeing 747 from New York to London. Promising improvements, however, do add up. Developments with zero-emission, battery-powered electric engines are already happening in commercial flight, involving trips of limited duration and distance. Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flight. Our planet’s health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow. Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electric-powered transportation will be as common as air. 28. Why are many companies switching to electricity-powered vehicles? A. To reinvent the way we travel. B. To cut the costs of car production. C. To improve the quality of products. D. To pursue sustainable development. 29. What do we know about the electric car? A. It came into use a century ago. B. It enjoys increasing popularity. C. It sells better than the traditional one. D. It costs less than the gas-powered one. 30. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3? A. To show the disadvantages of battery power. B. To emphasize the significance of short flights. C. To stress the future prospects of electric planes. D. To state the developments of commercial flight. 31. What does the author mean by saying “the train has left the station”? A. Train transportation has improved. B. Green transportation is on its way. C The electric train is running regularly. D. The gas-powered train has become the past. D The Forest Eye project aims to create the largest living forest feature in England by growing 5,000 alder, beech and maple trees into the shape of a child’s eye. The trees are being planted in Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire, with the help of local young people. The trees will form an eye 300 meters wide that will be visible from the sky in about six years, when they have grown. The project hopes to focus on the importance of young people’s ideas for creating a health y natural environment. It was designed by a company called Sand in Your Eye and has been created by Forestry England, an organization that protects forests and woodlands. Josephine Lavelle, director at Forestry England, says, “Having the gaze of a child growing in the heart of this beautiful and ever-changing forest is a powerful symbol of how we need to listen and respond to the needs and vision of future generations.” The project also aims to highlight the important role that forests play in fighting climate change. As well as providing a home for wildlife, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and create oxygen that humans need to breathe. When the trees have grown, they will provide a place for lots of wild animals, like bats, birds and small mammals to live. The Forest Eye will also create a space for people to explore and connect with nature. Jamie Wardley, artistic director at Sand in Your Eye, has plenty of experience creating pieces of “land art”. These are huge drawings and sculptures made from grass, ice and sand, including a 60-meter portrait of Swedish climate-change campaigner Greta Thunberg on a school field in Yorkshire. He says, “The trees are my paint.” “Our work is about prompting people to think deeply and respond emotionally to some of the biggest issues facing us, including the climate crisis.” Wardley also plans to develop the Forest Eye into an even bigger project. “It is our ambition to create the whole face of a young girl at the same scale, measuring 2,000 meters across. Those trees that are planted in the Forest Eye are the very beginning of this,” he says. 32. What can we know about the project? A. It is planting trees to form an eye. B. It is aimed at creating artworks. C. It is proposed by the local youth. D. It is carried out in the largest forest. 33. What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about? A. The argument for the project. B. The benefits of tree. C. The value of children’s ideas. D. The fight against climate change. 34. Which of the following can best describe Jamie Wardley? A. Ignorant. B. Adventurous. C. Emotional. D. Creative. 35. Which is the best title for the article? A. Land arts take off B. Tree planting catches on C. Giant eye planting kicks off D. Lying often seems like a good way to make people happy or avoid being punished for mistakes. Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they’re doing it. ___36___ One obvious reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to maintain. There’s always a chance that the person you lied to will find out the truth. Is the advantage from lying really worth the risk? ___37___ If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details. And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember. But if you tell the truth, you will never have trouble remembering. This saves you effort and makes conversations less stressful for you. ___38___ People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them. And a lie about someone else could destroy that person’s reputation. If your friends find out you lied to them, their feelings will be hurt. They will question whether they can trust you or wonder whether you care about them. ___39___ This will help you in every area of your life. Business deals, friendships, family and other relationships all depend on trust. Honesty, however, doesn’t mean that you have to say everything you think. ___40___ Honesty means that when you speak, you tell the truth without holding any information back. When you do that, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy stronger relationships. A. But despite all this, honesty is really worth the effort. B. So in our life, we should avoid lying to win a good chance. C. It means you only tell the truth, or white lies when necessary. D. Another obvious reason to avoid lying is that lying can harm others. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt like a lone wolf, struggling against the complexities of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his otherwise dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone. One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.” Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith. Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one’s comfort zone. The day of departure arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn’t help but feel amazed as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. A 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第一段的“The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.(这位来自底特律的26岁学生和环保主义者请求当地小吃爱好者帮个忙:与其把你的空薯片袋扔进垃圾桶,不如把它们捐出来,不如把它们捐出来,这样她就可以把它们变成无家可归者的睡袋。)” 故选A。 根据第三段的“The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof lightweight and easy to carry around”.(其结果是一款“防水、轻便、便于携带”的睡袋。) ”可知,Chip bag Project制作的睡袋很方便。故选C。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段的““We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.(她说:“我们致力于不仅在社会上,而且在环境上产生影响。”)” 根据第一段的“The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.(这位来自底特律的26岁学生和环保主义者请求当地小吃爱好者帮个忙:与其把你的空薯片袋扔进垃圾桶,不如把它们捐出来,不如把它们捐出来,这样她就可以把它们变成无家可归者的睡袋。)”和最后一段的“And, of course, there’s the symbolism of rescuing bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. (当然,还有一种象征意义,那就是拯救那些原本会被扔进垃圾桶的袋子,并用它们来帮助无家可归的人。)”可知, 珍妮将睡袋捐给无家可归者,看得出她慷慨大方,使用空薯片袋做睡袋看得出她富有创造力。故选B。 C With nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas coming from all types of transportation, can we keep ourselves off gas-powered vehicles to avoid the worst effects? C. The electric train is running regularly. D. The gas-powered train has become the past. D 29. B 30. C 31. 根据文章第一段关键句“As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future – that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero- emission planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.”(随着越来越多的政府推动对气候变化采取紧急行动,相当多的公司押注他们的未来——数百万消费者终于准备好使用电动汽车了。 根据文章第二段关键句“Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived.”(几乎一夜之间,电动汽车的时代已经到来。)及“Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them.”(预计到2025年,全球电动汽车的年销量将从目前的300多万辆飙升至1400万辆。 根据文章第三段关键句“High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles.”(目前,高容量电池在将数百人发射到天空并携带他们飞行数千英里的技术挑战方面毫无用处。)及“Promising improvements, however, do add up.”(然而,有希望的改进确实增加了。) 根据文章最后一段关键句“Our planet’s health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow.”(我们星球的健康取决于到2050年消除二氧化碳排放,然而,按照应对气候挑战所需的时间表,从汽油驱动的汽车转向天然气驱动的速度仍然太慢。)及“Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electric-powered transportation will be as common as air.”(然而,火车已经离开了车站。 D The Forest Eye project aims to create the largest living forest feature in England by growing 5,000 alder, beech and maple trees into the shape of a child’s eye. A It is planting trees to form an eye. Environmental groups spring up 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. 根据文章第一段“The Forest Eye project aims to create the largest living forest feature in England by growing 5,000 alder, beech and maple trees into the shape of a child’s eye.(Forest Eye项目的目标是通过种植5000棵桤木、山毛榉和枫树,形成一个孩子的眼睛的形状,创造出英格兰最大的活森林特征。)” 根据文章第四段“As well as providing a home for wildlife, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and create oxygen that humans need to breathe.(除了为野生动物提供家园外,树木还能吸收大气中的二氧化碳,并产生人类需要呼吸的氧气。)” 根据文章最后一段“Jamie Wardley, artistic director at Sand in Your Eye, has plenty of experience creating pieces of “land art”.(Sand in Your Eye的艺术总监Jamie Wardley在创作“土地艺术”方面有丰富的经验。)” 根据文章第一段“The Forest Eye project aims to create the largest living forest feature in England by growing 5,000 alder, beech and maple trees into the shape of a child’s eye.(Forest Eye项目的目标是通过种植5000棵桤木、山毛榉和枫树,形成一个孩子的眼睛的形状,创造出英格兰最大的活森林特征。)”和最后一段“Those trees that are planted in the Forest Eye are the very beginning of this(在“森林之眼”种植的那些树是这一切的开始)”可知,短文的最佳标题为C“巨型植眼开启”切题,故选C。 According to a common saying, “Honesty is the best policy.” But in daily life, honesty can be difficult. E. Sometimes it’s best to remain silent if your words might hurt someone else. F. Lies are also difficult to hide because they are harder to remember than the truth. G. In contrast, if you always tell the truth, you will develop the reputation for honesty. A 37. F 38. D 39. G 40. 【36题详解】 根据上文“Lying often seems like a good way to make people happy or avoid being punished for mistakes. Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they’re doing it.”(说谎似乎是让人们开心或避免因错误而受到惩罚的好方法。 故选A项。 【37题详解】 根据后文“If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details. And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember.(如果你编一个故事,你必须记住所有的细节。你说的谎言越多,你要记住的故事就越多。)”可知,此处是指记住谎言很难,所以选项F“谎言也很难隐藏,因为它们比真相更难记住。”切合文意。故选F项 【38题详解】 根据上文“One obvious reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to maintain.”(诚实的一个明显原因是谎言很难维持。) 且与下文“People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them”(相信你的谎言的人可能会因此做出错误的决定)一致,one…another“一个……另一个”,故选D项。 【39题详解】 根据后文“This will help you in every area of your life. Business deals, friendships, family an romantic relationships all depend on trust.(这对你生活的方方面面都有帮助。商业交易、友谊、家庭和浪漫关系都依赖于信任。)”可知,此处是指诚实会为人带来好的声誉,所以选项G“相反,如果你总是说实话,你就会养成诚实的名声。”切合文意。This指代的是上文的the reputation for honesty。故选G。 【40题详解】 根据前文“Honesty, however, doesn’t mean that you have to say everything you think.(然而,诚实并不意味着你必须说出你所想的一切。)” It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. He pulled the ___44___ of the weeds off, moving quickly down the line as he left the remaining part still in the soil. Somehow, I found this to be incredibly ___45___. Why couldn’t he do it in my way and save me the time of having to ___46___ his portion (部分)? Why did he do it at all if he wasn’t going to do it properly? “If you would do as told, we’d be done earlier and ___47___ a longer period before we would have to return and pull weeds next time.” I said, trying to keep my tone ___48___. He went back to his work, shaking dirt from his handful of growing things and throwing broken stems into our ___49___ basket. “People do things... ___50___, Mom.” He said innocently. My fire soon faded, replaced by the ___51___ realization that I’d just received a valuable ___52___ from the person that I was supposed to be teaching. While trying to ___53___ my baby girl, my kindergartener, and the yard work, ___54___ was a lifeline for me, a coping mechanism. But my way was, perhaps, not the best way after all.
