My parents grew up poor. But as a family, we were comfortable, though we didn't have
much what would be considered luxuries. One year, my father went on a trip to Italy and
brought my mother an opal ring. It was her favorite stone, and she cherished that ring, It repre-
sented Dad's love for her
Dad died at the age of 53 in 198o after a grueling battle with cancer. Mom was working at
Burlington Coat Factory Department store. She usually wore the ring to work. Over the years.
the ring became impossible for my Mom to wear because of her swollen knuckles(指关节).I
had the ring fitted with a clasp so that Mom could wear it again. She took great pride in the fre
quent compliments as she got on that ring.
One day during her shift, the ring slipped off. She didn't realize it until the following day
Mom was sad. The ring did not have a high monetary value, but it meant as much to her as life
itself, I decided to go and look for it.
I encountered Chloe, one of my Mom's co-workers at my Mom's workplace. She led me to
the store where Mom worked, and then left. It was packed with clothes, racks and tables. I
started row by row crawling on the floor to see if I could find the ring underneath all the clothes.
When I got to the last row and hadn't found the ring, the thought occurred to me that it might
have fallen into the pocket of a coat as my Mom was hanging or rearranging the clothes. I started
feeling around in the pockets of some of the coats, but quickly abandoned. There were at least
20,ooo pieces of clothing in that department. The attempt seemed useless.

I was twenty then, teaching a class of thirty students in Toronto including Mike, a 10-year-old stree
kid. Having lost his father and mother, he lived with a mentally-disturbed grandmother.
He was alwavs hungry, so each day I'd take him for breakfast before class, Each noon after I shared
my lunch with him, I taught him new skills-using a microscope, constructing a camera, etc.
One day Mike told me of his dream. Most kids in the class wanted to be doctors, teachers
or some such thing, but not Mike! His desire was to be a gangster(强盗)! And he was serious
about it.
I believed all children had a gift for what he wanted to be. If he wanted to be a gangster, I'd
do all I could to help him become the very best "gangster".
I had a plan. Every Saturday after we had breakfast, I took him to the Law Library of the
city. I explained to him a good gangster had to know something about criminal law, and reading
up on law was the only way to learn. His young mind was interested, and he dove in.
That was how we spent each Saturday morning that year. I'd drop him off at the law library
Three hours later, I'd return, pick him up for lunch and after a review of his morning's work.
take him home.
The following year I taught in another school far away, which prevented me continuing to
participate physically with him on Saturday mornings. But I provided him with public transporta
tion tickets so he could keep up his regular study at the library.
Later I got married and moved to London. Sadly, and to my great regret, I lost contact with
Mike.
Years passed. I often thought of him, wondering what had become of him. Then, one day.
I was back in Toronto on business, looking up the number of a former colleague in the telephone
directory, and there, Mike's name as part of a title of "JUDGES and LAWYERS"danced off the
page into my eyes.

One New Year's morning, as we came down to breakfast, with very shiny faces and spendy
aprons(围裙),we surprisingly found father alone in the dining room.
“Happy New Year. Papa! Where is Mother?"we cried.
“A little boy came begging and said they were starving at home, so your mother went to see
and...ah,here she is."
As Papa spoke, in came Mamma, looking very cold, rather sad, and very much excited.
“children, don't begin till you hear what I have to say. "she cried and we sat staring at her, with
the breakfast untouched before us. "Not far away from here, lies a poor woman with a little
newborn baby. Six children are huddled(挤在一起)into one bed to keep from freezing, for they
have no fire. There is nothing to eat over there, and the oldest boy came here to tell me they
were starving on this bitter cold day. My little girls, will you give them your breakfast, as a New
Year's gift?"
We sat silent a minute and looked at the nice, hot porridge(粥), creamy milk, and good
bread and butter; for we were brought up like English children, and never drank tea or coffee
or ate anything but porridge for our breakfast.
"I wish we'd eaten it up," thought I, for I was rather a selfish child, and very hungry.
“May I go and help carry it to the poor, little children?" asked Beth, who had the tenderest
heart that ever beat under a spendy apron.
“I can carry that little pot,”said little May, proudly giving the thing she loved best.
“And I shall take all the porridge,” I burst in, heartily ashamed of my first feeling.
"You shall put on your things and help me, and when we come back, we'll get something to
eat,"said Mother, beginning to pile the bread and butter into a big basket.

One day my mother and I were out having a girls'day, and we decided to go to a seafood
restaurant. We got there just as the lunch rush started, so there was a line to get in. I looked
over to the side and spied a very thin lady with no coat and a chemo shunt(化疗分流器) in her
arm. She was holding a sign that read:"Homeless and hungry. Please help."
I looked around at everyone, and no one looked like they cared in the least. I knew that if I
didn't do something,I will be regretful forever, I went over to her and asked if she would like tc
come out of the cold and get something to eat. She looked for a second like she was unsure I was
talking to her. She put her head down and said in the lowest voice,"Yes."
I helped her to her feet and walked her up to my mother, who was in line. We stood there
together until we were seated. When the waitress came, she asked what we wanted to eat but
completely ignored this woman and acted like she didn't exist.
Then the owner came over and asked if we wanted this woman to sit at our table. I assured
her we did. She then asked what her name was, to which I replied that we hadn't gotten to ask
that yet.
Then she said something that put me over the top. She said,"Well, you did right by get-
ting her food instead of giving her money."
This was the last straw for my mother and me. I talked loud enough for everyone to hear
when I told her,"This woman is sitting right here. She is not invisible, and she is not deaf. She
is just as good as anyone in here, and I will not allow her to be treated any differently than any
other customer in here."
