Every year, people from all over the world come here to see the beautiful sights and enjoy the exciting whale-seeing. In winter, when people in Iceland finish their daily work, they will have different special activities to spend the long dark night. Skating, riding snow motorbikes and having parties can really make an exciting night. After all the fun, a hot bath must be the first choice to relax. There are also story-telling activities for children, which can teach them to be strong and kind. The most popular stories are about Christmas in Iceland. Because of a long cold winter, Iceland has a short growing season. The food problem was always a headache for Iceland in the past. It had to buy most of its food from other countries, Later, when farmers learned to use lights and underground heat to grow crops (庄稼) all year round in the greenhouse, things changed a lot. Living in such a nice environment, most people in Iceland live a happy life. According to a survey about happiness made each year in Europe, Iceland is always among the top 3. 4.In which part of magzaine can you probably find the text? Yet that is what is happening to makers of video games. For years parents have complained that their children are “addicted” to their video games and smartphones. Today, however, even more doctors are using the term. On January 1 this year, “gaming disorder” — in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm — gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO). Are games really addictive? Psychologists have different opinions. Those who don’t think so say that this is just another moral panic. Similar warnings have been given about television, rock’n’roll, jazz, comic books, novels and even crossword puzzles, but it turns out that they are not as harmful as expected. However, supporters argue that game developers have the motivation and the means to design their products to make them extremely attractive. For one thing, the business- model has changed: In the old days, games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from buying of in-game goods, which ties playtime directly to profit they make. For another, game-makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them maximize the playtime. Smart phones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. In this way products are constantly adjusted to encourage players’ spending. The biggest spenders are known as “whales”, a term that originated in casinos (赌场). The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO recognition, diagnoses will become more common. Anyway, being put together with gambling in the public mind, fairly or not, will not do the industry any good. 8.What do we know from Paragraph 1? A.It is not suitable to compare video games to gambling. B.Parents complain about their children’s addiction to gambling. C.Gaming addiction was officially recognized as a disease. D.More doctors are against the use of the term “addicted”. 9.What does the underlined words “moral panic” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Unexpected addiction caused by science and technology. B.Wrong judgment on how harmful something is. C.Trouble caused by someone’s immoral behavior. D.A shocking statement of the unexpected panic. 10.What do games developers do to make games attractive? A.They don’t charge players for in-game goods. B.They keep players’ video game machines updated. C.They reward big spenders with a unique title. D.They adjust products based on received data. 11.In the last paragraph, the author aims to _______. A.offer a suggestion B.make a prediction C.give a warning D.put forward a solution D Ralph Emerson once said that the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, to be loving, to make some difference in the world. While we appreciate such words of wisdom, we seldom try to follow them in our lives. Most people prefer to live a good life themselves, ignoring their responsibilities for the world. This narrow perception of a good life may provide short-term benefits, but is sure to lead to long-term ham and suffering. A good life based on comfort and luxury may eventually lead to more pain because we spoil our health and even our character, principles, ideals, and relationships. What then, is the secret of a good life? A good life is a process, not a state of being: a direction, not a destination. We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any expectation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness. More importantly, we must know ourselves inside out. Only when we examine ourselves deeply can we discover our abilities and recognize our limitations, and then work accordingly to create a better world. The first requirement for a good life is having a loving heart. When we do certain right things merely as a duty, we find our job so tiresome that we’ll soon bum out. However, when we do that same job out of love, we not only enjoy what we do, but also do it with an effortless feeling. However, love alone is insufficient to lead a good life. Love sometimes blinds us to the reality. Consequently, our good intentions may not lead to good results. To achieve desired outcome those who want to do good to others also need to equip themselves with accurate world knowledge. False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. If love is the engine of a car knowledge is the steering wheel(方向盘). If the engine lacks power, the car can’t move; if the driver loses control of the steering, a road accident probably occurs. Only with love in heart and the right knowledge in mind can we lead a good life. With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others. When we see the impact of our good work on the world, we give meaning to our life and earn lasting joy and happiness. 12.What effect does the narrow perception of a good life have on us? A.Making us simple-minded B.Making us short-sighted. C.Leading us onto a busy road. D.Keeping us from comfort and luxury. 13.According to the author, how can one gain true happiness? A.Through maintaining good health. B.By going through pain and suffering. C.By recognizing one’s abilities and limitations. D.Through offering help much needed by others. 14.In what case may good intentions fail to lead to desired results? A.When we have wrong knowledge of the world. B.When our love for the world is insufficient. C.When we are insensitive to dangers in life. D.When we stay blind to the reality. 15.According to Paragraph5, life can be made truly good when ______. A.inspired by love and guided by knowledge B.directed by love and pushed by knowledge C.purified by love and enriched by knowledge D.promoted by love and defined by knowledge While computers are incredibly useful tools, they can also be addictive. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy. I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives. Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.” My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before. Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving. Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn. With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 答案与解析 1.D 2.B 3.C 本文是一篇应用文。 根据Everyday Food部分“by Martha Stewart (Martha Stewart著)”以及“You’ll find all of that in this book: 250 simple recipes for delicious meals that bring freshness and nutrition. Every year, people from all over the world come here to see the beautiful sights and enjoy the exciting whale-seeing.(冰岛的夏天是游客的黄金季节。每年,来自世界各地的人们来到这里欣赏美丽的景色,享受令人兴奋的观鲸活动。)”可推知,我们很可能在杂志的旅游部分找到这篇文章。故选C项。 5.词句猜测题。根据文章第一段“Iceland is a northern European country with amazing natural beauty and oceans around.(冰岛是一个北欧国家,拥有令人惊叹的自然美景和海洋。)” 根据文章第四段“Because of a long cold winter, Iceland has a short growing season.(由于漫长寒冷的冬天,冰岛的生长期很短。)” 根据第一段中“On January l this year, “gaming disorder” — in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm — gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO).”(今年1月1日,“游戏障碍”得到了世界卫生组织(WHO)的认可。“游戏障碍”指的是尽管会造成伤害,但仍无法控制地玩游戏。)可知,从第一段我们知道游戏成瘾被正式认定为一种疾病。故选C项。 9.词句猜测题。根据划线短语前一句“Are games really addictive? Psychologists have different opinions.”(游戏真的会上瘾吗?心理学家对此有不同的看法。)以及划线词所在句“Those who don’t think so say that this is just another...”(那些不这么认为的人说,这只是另一种……)其中,another指代众多类似当中的另外一个,根据下一句“Similar warnings have been given about television, rock’n’roll, jazz, comic books, novels and even crossword puzzles, but it turns out that they are not as harmful as expected.”(对电视、摇滚、爵士乐、漫画书、小说甚至填字游戏也发出了类似的警告,但事实证明,它们并没有想象的那么有害。) 根据第三段中“However, supporters argue that game developers have the motivation and the means to design their products to make them extremely attractive.”(然而,支持者认为,游戏开发者有动机和方法设计出极具吸引力的产品。)以及“For another, game-makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them maximize the playtime.   Smartphones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. In this way products are constantly adjusted to encourage players’ spending.”(另一方面,游戏开发者结合心理学理论和数据,这有助于他们最大化游戏时间。 根据文章最后一段 “The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing.”(游戏行业应该意识到,在现实世界中,它有一个问题,而且这个问题正在增长。)以及“Anyway, being put together with gambling in the public mind, fairly or not, will not do the industry any good.”(无论如何,在公众心目中,将赌博与公平与否放在一起,对这个行业都没有任何好处。) 12.B 13.D 14.A 15.A 本文是一篇议论文。 根据文章第二段“This narrow perception of a good life may provide short-term benefits, but is sure to lead to long-term harm and suffering.(这种对美好生活的狭隘看法可能会带来短期的好处,但肯定会导致长期的伤害和痛苦)”可知,对美好生活的狭隘看法只能给我们带来短期的好处,所以时间长了会让我们目光短浅、短视。故选B项。 13. 根据文章第三段“We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any expectation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness.(我们必须先为他人服务而不求回报,因为他人的幸福是我们自己幸福的源泉)”可知,我们能够从帮助他人获得真正的幸福。故选D项。 14. 故选A项。 15. 根据文章最后一段“With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others.(带着爱和知识,我们全力以赴,通过对他人做好事来创造一个更美好的世界)”可知,有爱和知识,生活就会变得更美好。故选A项。 16.C 17.A 18.E 19.D 20.G 16.前文“Help your child overcome their own computer addiction by using the following methods.
