I was born in Bombay, India. When I was about 6 months old, my legs became paralyzed (麻痹的). My birth mother deserted (遗弃) me. I was adopted (收养) by an American family. I was taken to Spokane, Washington. It took me a long time to be able to walk, because I had to accept a number of operations.
When I was in the business school, one of my friends was training for a marathon. One day, she introduced me to an organization called Achilles International, which was a club for athletes with disabilities. It took me four months to get the courage to make the phone call. Dick Traum, the founder of Achilles, answered the phone. He asked me to show up on Tuesday and would lend me his bike. That was the first time that I had been able to feel the wind in my long hair. I rode really slowly, but it was the coolest feeling to ride a bicycle for the first time.
Later, I decided to take part in the Ironman World Championship. I was in a lot of pain, because I had to practice swimming, biking and running for over nine months.
On the day of the marathon, it took me 14 hours and 39 minutes to finish the Triathlon. After I crossed that finish line, I cried. I made it. It was my determination that made my dream come true.

Have you ever trained your brain? Now there are some new suggestions, such as eating dark chocolate and having cold meat for breakfast. You should also avoid watching soap operas, spending time with people who complain or follow fat-free diets, according to a new book on getting “brain-fit”.
Many of the suggestions in Teach Yourself Training Your Brain are surprising. The book says to read out loud while holding a baby. Writers Terry Horne and Simon Wotton say their advice is from the latest research by experts around the world.
“For years we have thought our brain capability is decided by our genes. But it’s now clear that it depends on our lifestyle. What we eat and drink, how we learn at school and what type of feelings we have are all important,” said Horne.
The book talks about the most up-to -date thinking in science about how diet, the environment, stress and other sides of modern life affect our brain capacity. It also offers advice and exercises. The book comes as more and more people are spending money on books, DVDs and computer games, which can improve their brain’s capability.
Horne believes that people need to make changes to their lifestyles to increase their brain capacity. Happiness, confidence and an optimistic nature help the brain, he added.
“So mix with people who make you laugh, or share the same interests as you. And avoid people who complain,” said Horne. “People who are negative will make you sad, which means you won’t achieve things.”
28. According to the book, which of the following isn’t good for training your brain?
A. Doing some brain games. B. Eating dark chocolate.
C. Having cold meat for breakfast. D. Watching soap operas.
29. What’s Horne’s attitude toward the brain capability?
A. It depends on what our genes are like.
B. It’s decided by our lifestyle.
C. It has nothing to do with schools.
D. It should follow the type of our feelings.
30. What's the book Teach Yourself Training Your Brain mainly about?
A. How people’s brain capability works.
B. Exercises to improve brain capability.
C. Some scientific and healthy diets.
D. How to improve people’s brain capability.
31. From the underlined sentence, we can learn that ________.
A. more and more people are interested in reading
B. books can help people improve their brain capability

Can dogs and cats live in peace in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new way for success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while attacking and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attack, while a dog doing the same signals admitting defeat.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.
What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously thought. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The advantage of this research on cats and dogs may not only about pets — to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
32. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .
A. early B. sweetly
C. quickly D. suprisingly
33. Some cats and dogs may fight when .
A. they are cold to each other
B. they look away from each other
C. they understand each other’s signals in a wrong way
D. they are introduced at an early age
34. What is found surprising about cats and dogs?
A. They eat and sleep together.
B. They observe each other’s behaviors.
C. They learn to speak each other’s language.
D. They know something from each other’s voices.
35. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?
A. We should learn to live in peace.
B. We should know more about animals.
C We should live in peace with animals.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

【原文】 Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I’m very happy to see that so many of you have been able to come this evening in spite of the weather. I know our speaker will have plenty to say. That will be interesting to you all. Doctor Jane Wilson, whom we are pleased to have with us, has devoted several years to the study of present-day art in Italy, in particular, during her four years of lecturing in the university of Milan. She has travelled widely in Britain, France and Italy, gathering material for the book she’s now preparing for publication. She is an expert photographer and has prepared many photos that will be used to help understand this lecture. Doctor Wilson will be speaking this evening on the main influences of some major nineteenth century paintings on present day art in Italy. And we are all looking forward to hearing about a subject which I at least know little, but like all of us here, would like to know much more. Now, without further delay, let’s welcome Dr Wilson.

On the day of the marathon it took me 14 hours and 39 minutes to finish the Triathlon.

“For years we have thought our brain capability is decided by our genes. But it’s now clear that it depends on our lifestyle. What we eat and drink, how we learn at school and what type of feelings we have are all important,” said Horne.
The book talks about the most up-to -date thinking in science about how diet the environment, stress and other sides of modern life affect our brain capacity.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
