Yawning (打哈欠) is something we all do—maybe because we’re bored or tired. Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn makes you yawn, too.
According to BBC, a new study shows it might be because yawning cools the brain, like the fan in your computer. This might be why we are more likely (可能的) to sleep and yawn on hot days.
We yawn more when we’re tired and ready for a short sleep, and we can’t control when we do it! But it’s also true that yawning is very contagious behavior (行为). John Drury, a researcher, told BBC that, “It’s something that you can’t stop. Dogs yawn when their owners yawn, and animals yawn to each other. It happens whether (无论) you want to or not.”
His research into this behavior showed that there is a connection with how close we are to the yawning people. If we are closely connected with the person who has the behavior, we are likely to do it, too.
Another research showed the same results. They asked volunteers to watch other people yawn. They found that they couldn’t stop yawning when others around them yawned. They also found, when using electrical stimulation (电刺激), they were able to increase (提升) people’s wish to yawn. These findings could be useful like helping treat other diseases (疾病) like Tourette’s.
8. When are people more likely to yawn according to Paragraph Two?
A. On cool days. B. On cold days. C. On hot days.
9. What does the underlined word “contagious” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 有危险的 B. 有害处的 C. 有传染性的
10. Why could these findings in the last paragraph be useful?
A. Because they could help people stop yawning.
B. Because they could be good for treating some diseases.
C. Because they could make people sleep well.
11. Why did the writer write the passage?
A. To show why people yawn.
B. To describe how to yawn well.
C. To tell us why it is good to yawn.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Lewis is a wild elephant. He lives in the Samburu National Reserve (保护区) in Kenya, a country in Africa. Lewis uses his legs to walk and his eyes to look for food. He uses his trunk (象鼻) to catch food.
African elephants are in danger. That means the number of elephants is very small in some places. To protect them, natural reserves like the Samburu National Reserve are set up (建立). They give the animals a safe place to live.
Protecting huge animals can be hard. Food and space (空间) are quite important for elephants. It is difficult to find spaces that are large enough and enough food for them. Many smaller animals, like deer, share 64-square-mile reserve. They need less food than Lewis. And unlike Lewis, they don’t walk into unsafe places.
Scientists wanted to find out what made the elephants walk into unsafe places. Maybe then they could keep them safe in Samburu. They put special collars (颈圈) around the necks of elephants to follow them. Scientists learned that Lewis often left the reserve during the dry season. When there was little rain, he couldn’t find enough to eat. He learned to find delicious crops (庄稼) on a farm. This information will help Lewis. Scientists can give him food in the dry seasons.

Yawning (打哈欠) is something we all do—maybe because we’re bored or tired. Sometimes just seeing other people yawn makes you yawn, too.
