单元话题阅读理解练习
(23-24九年级上·浙江·随堂练习)I had learned English for 11 years, but I knew few English idioms(习语). When I went to study in America last year, I had trouble communicating with Americans at times.
One day, I asked my roommate Kevin, “Shall we play soccer tomorrow?” He answered, “Let’s play it by ear.” I was so puzzled(迷惑的). “Ear can play soccer?” I asked. He explained, “It means let’s see how things go. The weather report says tomorrow is rainy.”
Last October, I was waiting for the bus in a station. Beside me sat a young man. When he knew I was Chinese, he asked me something about the Great Wall. I told him, “The Great Wall is more than 20,000 kilometers long.” The man said, “You don’t say.” I was surprised. “There must be something wrong with him,” I thought. Later, I knew he meant “Really?”
I was once invited to my classmate’s home. His mother said to me, “Break your ice, please.” I wondered, “You didn’t give me any ice.” Later my classmate told me she meant I could make myself relaxed in their home.
From then on, I realized English idioms had special meanings. It was wrong to translate them word by word.

Never too old to learn
活到老学到老
Very few of us become smooth in another language by studying it in high school.
I went to university and then moved across the country, had a hard job, married and raised children. I made an effort to keep the little bit of French that I learned in school, but finally realized that this was pointless. I fully realized that new languages are best learned when young, and that our abilities in that regard go down with age.
However, just before my 50th birthday, I signed up for French classes. After I was tested to see which group I belonged in, I was placed at almost the starting level. When I looked around at my first Saturday morning class, I was struck by how many of the students were learning French as a third, fourth, or even fifth language. I used to think it was impossible to learn a new language, but some people can learn them easily. I discovered that some language skills weaken as we get older.
While I’d always thought of myself as a quick learner, that was no longer the case. I learned new words very slowly. What I learned one week seemed to slip away as soon as I learned the next skill. I looked up the same words and language structures over and over again.
Now, a couple of years in, I can listen to the news in French and catch 90 percent of it on the first try, read a novel if the language is not too difficult, and hold up my end of a conversation if it doesn’t go too fast.
I can still achieve many things, who knows what?
I’ve learned so much beyond grammar and vocabulary. I’ve met people from around the world and all walks of life who have the courage to make fools of themselves in order to learn something new. I’ve been taught by patient teachers from many corners of the world, including France, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.
Listening to the news as it is presented to the people of France, I have a new understanding of how something can look completely different from another view. I’ve learned that a language is not just a set of words, but a way of thinking.
But most of all, I’ve learned that it really is never too late to learn something new.
6.When did the writer first realize that new languages are best learned when young?
A.In high school. B.In university. C.After moving across the country. D.After having children.
7.What surprised the writer about the other students in their French class?
A.They were all beginners.
B.They were all older than the writer.
C.They were all learning French as a second language.
D.They were all learning French as a third, fourth, or fifth language.
8.How did the writer used to feel about learning a new language?
A.It was easy for everyone. B.It was impossible for everyone.
C.It was easy for some people. D.It was impossible for the writer.
9.What did the writer find difficult about learning a new language?
A.Remembering new words. B.Understanding grammar.
C.Speaking with native speakers. D.Reading scientific novels.
10.Why did the writer believe it’s better to learn a language at a young age?
A.It is easier for young people to memorize new vocabulary.
B.Old people are less patient with themselves to learn new things.
C.Our abilities to learn a language go down with age.
D.Young people are more motivated to learn new languages.

(23-24九年级上·北京通州·期中)Tips to Improve English Listening Skills
As an English learner, is your English listening skill progressing well? If it is still posing a problem, maybe the following tips can give you some help.
First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening comprehension is probably the most difficult task for almost all leaners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen, and that means as often as possible.
When you begin to listen, do not translate into your native language. When you translate into your native language, you are taking the focus of your attention away from the speaker and concentrating (集中注意力) on the translation process taking place in your brain. Translation leads to a mental (精神的) block in your brain. It sometimes doesn’t allow you to understand anything at all.
Most of people repeat themselves. Think for a moment about your friends, family, and your teachers. When they speak in their native tongue, do they repeat themselves? If they are like most people, they probably do. That means that whenever you listen to someone speaking, it is very likely that they will repeat the information, giving you a second, third or even fourth chance to understand what has been said.
Use key words or key phrases to help you understand the general (大致的) ideas. If you understand “New York”, “business trip”, “last year”, you can think that the person is speaking about a business trip to New York last year. This may seem obvious (明显的,显然的) to you, but remember that understanding the general idea will help you to understand the detail (细节) as the person continues to speak.
Listen for context. Let’s imagine that your English speaking friend says, “I bought this great tuner at JR’s. It was really cheap and now I can finally listen to National Public Radiobroadcasts.” You don’t understand what a tuner is, and if you focus on the word “tuner” , you might become frustrated. If you think in context, you probably will begin to understand. For example, bought is the past of buy, listen is no problem and radio is obvious. Now you understand, he bought something—the tuner—to listen to the radio. A tuner must be a kind of radio. This is a simple example but it demonstrates what you need to focus on. Not the word that you don’t understand, but the words you do understand.
16.According to the passage, what is a possible way to understand the general ideas?
A.To know the key information.
B.To get more detailed information.
C.To understand all the information.
D.To remember the repetitive information.
17.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Translating creates a road between the listener and the speaker.
B.It is difficult to get the key information while listening to the materials.
C.It is useless to make a prediction about the words people don’t understand.
D.Saying what has been said again can help people understand the information.
18.The word “demonstrates” in Paragraph 6 probably means “__________” .
A.creates continuously B.shows clearly
C.keeps it a secret of D.studies carelessly on
(23-24九年级上·广西贺州·期中)I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can’t learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I’m good at it. I’m very glad to tell you something about how I study English.
First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject—English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs, and the songs sound nice. I often think how interesting English is!
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary. Then practice again and again, never be tired. And I have a good habit: asking whenever I have a question.
Third, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English dairies. English has become a close friend of mine.
Now I have learned English for more than two years. I always keep the first in our school. From these words, I hope every student can learn English well.

The Sound of a Foreign Word Caused Debate(辩论) on US Campus
Last August, The University of Southern California, known as USC, became involved in a debate over language that appeared widely in U. S. and Chinese news stories.
It started with a white communications professor talking about small words or sounds that people use while speaking to signal pauses.
Because of the coronavirus(冠状病毒) health problems, Gregory Patton was teaching the class online in a video conference. This fact may have added to the problem.
Patton advised his business school students that they should keep the pauses, but should avoid these “filler” sounds.
“Um” and “er” are examples of these sounds in English.
In the Chinese language, Patton said, the word people often use to fill space between thoughts is “that”. The word is pronounced “ne-ga”, which sounds like an English word that is offensive(冒犯的) to Black people. It is known as “the N-word” and is used to make Black people feel less than human.
Many students were surprised to hear the sound come from a professor.
Some Black students were upset and sent a letter to the school expressing their displeasure. They said the professor should have warned them that he was about to say a word that sounded like a bad word in English.
Patton, however, said he had used the example in classes before without complaint, so he did not think about warning students.
The complaints led to Patton being removed from the class for the rest of the term. Patton, however, was not dismissed(开除) by the school. He is still teaching at the university today.
Bartlett said one of the main problems to come out of the event was Patton’s strong wish to protect his reputation(名声). He wanted to be sure the school would support him.
Bartlett said a group of Chinese students wrote a letter supporting Patton.
Since the class was online, it was recorded. When people saw the video of the class, they were not sure why the professor’s class became a problem.
24.Why was Gregory Patton teaching the class online in a video conference?
A.Because of the bad weather. B.Because Patton was very busy.
C.Because of the professor’s good reputation. D.Because the coronavirus was widely spread.
25.What is/are the “filler” sound(s) in English?
A.That. B.“Um” and “er”. C.Ne-ga. D.“The N-word”.
26.Why could people see the video of the class later?
A.Because the class was online, it was recorded.
B.Because Patton wanted to protect his reputation.
C.Because the professor’s class became a big problem.
D.Because Patton wanted to be famous all over the world.
27.Why is a common word in Chinese “ne-ga” offensive to Black people according to your background knowledge?
A.Because it means “that” in Chinese.
B.Because Black people don’t understand Chinese at all.
C.Because Black people like the word “negro” better than other words like “Blacks”.
D.Because “ne-ga” has similar pronunciation to “negro” which Blacks especially hate.
