A
“Wow, this carrot is shaped like a spaceship!”
As a child, I’d always been drawn to strangely shaped vegetables in the produce aisle: horseshoe eggplants, flat bell peppers, three-legged carrots...but as time passed, TV ads and perfect supermarket displays taught me that tomatoes should always be perfectly round, carrots straight and apples bright red. I was taught that what looked nice must taste nice.
Today, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) acts much like Vogue and Cosmopolitan, setting unrealistic beauty expectations on how produce ought to look, down to the exact color, shape and size. But appearance is a poor indicator of flavor, nutritional value and even freshness. Food stylists in TV ads have conditioned us to see pretty as delicious and nutritious. However, Linda Hagen, a professor of consumer behavior from the University of Southem Califomia, denies the connection between beauty and nutrition, explaining that it is just another marketing strategy used by food companies to increase sales.
In the United States alone, an estimated six billion pounds of ugly produce is left unharvested, unsold and uneaten every year. That’s enough food to feed three million people for a whole year!
The discarding of imperfect produce is not just wasteful; it also contributes significantly to climate change. Rotting produce creates large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more effective than carbon dioxide. When supermarkets toss away an ill-shaped tomato, they are also tossing away all of the fertilizer, water and energy that went into growing, storing and transporting that tomato.
I’ve decided to take this issue into my own hands. Working with local farms, markets, meal centers and food banks, I have rescued over 4, 500 pounds of edible, nutritious, often organic, ugly produce in my city. However, helping can be a lot easier than driving from farm to farm every weekend.
19. How does the writer find the USDA?
A. Inactive. B. Invaluable.
C Inaccessible. D. Irresponsible.
20. What is Prof. Linda Hagen’s attitude towards the outside beauty of produce?
A. It reflects the inside value of produce.
B. It’s a reasonable marketing strategy.
C. It’s by no means connected with nutrition.
D. It indicates flavor, nutrition and freshness.
21. What will be talked about next?
A. Some simple ways to rescue ugly produce.
B Some other countries that waste produce.
C. Some stories of the writer visiting farms.
D. Some new discoveries by food professionals.

Between 1910 and 1970 the Australian government took 100,000 Aboriginal (原住民的) children away from their homes. These children, known as the Stolen Generation, were often under five years of age. They were taken away from their families because the government did not believe in the future of the Aborigines. It was assumed that the Aboriginal way of life would die out in a matter of years and that it would be better to bring the children to white families.
Many methods were used to separate Aboriginal babies and children from their families. Children were simply taken away by government officials and later told that they were orphans. Mothers often were given documents to sign. They could not read or write and they were told it was some kind of vaccination (疫苗接种) programme. Others were taken to hospitals and never seen by their families again. In most cases rich white families were given money to bring them up. Some went to orphanages or church missions.
In 1995, an investigation was started to bring more truth to the topic. The government, however, did not apologise to the victims. The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was the first Australian politician to make a formal apology to the Aborigines in 2008. However, he also said that the government would not give any money to the victims. He claimed that it was in the interests of government to raise the children in the best way.
Up to now only one member of Australia’s Stolen Generation has received money from the government. Bruce Trevorrow was taken to hospital on Christmas Day in 1957. His father never saw him again and the government sent him to a white family. He came back to his mother when he was ten years old. In his further life he suffered from depression and turned to alcohol. In 1998, he went to court and succeeded in getting about 500,000 dollars from the Australian government as a form of compensation (赔偿).
There are many others in Australia who have suffered the same fate. Organisations are being set up to work for the rights of the Aborigines and to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again.
22. Why were aboriginal children taken away from their homes?
A They were orphans.
B. Their family were too poor to support them.
C. The government thought the Aboriginal way of life would die out.
D. Many white families wanted to give these children better education.
23. What can be inferred according to the text?
A. The government cheated the Aboriginal mothers of their children.
B. The Aboriginal mothers were willing to let their children go.
C. The Aboriginal mothers were also worried about their children’s future.
D. All the Aboriginal children were sent to the white families.
24. What can we learn about Kevin Rudd from Paragraph 3?
A. He ordered to carry out an investigation into the topic.
B. He was the first to give money to the aboriginal victims.
C. He didn’t apologise to the Aboriginal victims.
D. He tried to defend the decisions of the government.
25. What do we know about Bruce Trevorrow from Paragraph 4?
A. He didn’t want to return to his own family.
B. He escaped from the white family at the age of ten.
C. He has received the government’s compensation.
D. He was taken good care of in the white family.
C
The low percentage of women in science ,technology, engineering, and mathematics(STEM) careers is often attributed (归因于) to men being believed to be better at the sort of thinking those fields require. Though studies have debunked the view, they have largely been based on results acquired from various several standardized tests. Now, researchers from Pennsylvania' S Carnegie Mellon University have found evidence that is hard to overlook; MRI (磁共振成像) proves that young girls and boys use the same mechanisms and networks in the brain to solve math problems.
The groundbreaking study to evaluate the biological gender differences in the math talent of young children was led by the university' s professor of neuroscience, Jessica Cantlon. For their study ,the team selected 104 young children, between 3 and 10 years old, divided almost equally by gender. The scientists used a functional MRI to observe their brain activity as they engaged in math tasks. These included watching age appropriate educational videos and doing math exercises such as counting and addition,as well as reading for comparison.
“We looked at which areas of the brain respond more strongly to mathematics content in the videos and tasks, compared to non math content like reading or the alphabet, Cantlon said.“When we do that in lite girls, we see a particular network of the brain respond, and when we do that same analysis in boys, we see the exact same regions.”
So why do girls and young women tend to avoid math and STEM careers in general? Cantlon thinks it may be rooted in social and cultural conventions. Previous studies have indicated that parents tend to spend more time with young boys in play that inspire spatial cognition (空间认知)-such as toys that involve learning number skills and shapes and solving puzzles. Educators were also observed to spend more time with boys during math class.

Great whites, the largest predatory(捕食性的)sharks in the world with the most fatal attacks on humans, are tough to imagine as newborn babies. That is partially because no one has seen one in the wild, it seems, until now.
Wildlife filmmaker Carlos Gauna and UC Riverside biology doctoral student Phillip Sternes were scanning the waters for sharks on July 9, 2023, near Santa Barbara on California’s central coast. That day, something exciting appeared on the viewfinder of Gauna’s drone camera. It was a shark pup(幼崽)unlike any they’d ever seen.
“We enlarged the images, put them in slow motion, and realized the white layer was being shed(脱落)from the body as it was swimming,” Sternes said. “I believe it was a newborn white shark shedding its embryonic layer.”
These observations are documented in a new paper in the Environmental Biology of Fishes journal. What Gauna and Sternes observed could help solve the longstanding mystery of great white birthing habits. This may well be the first evidence we have of a pup in the wild. Great whites, referred to only as white sharks by scientists, are gray on the top and white on the bottom. But this roughly 5-foot-long shark was pure white.
Though the paper authors acknowledge it is possible that the white layer the shark shed could have been a skin condition, the two believe what they saw was in fact a newborn great white. First, great white females give birth to live pups. A second reason is the presence of large, likely pregnant great whites in this location. Finally, this location off the coast of central California has long been proposed as a birthing location for great whites. Many scholars believe great whites are born farther out at sea.
Great whites are listed as an international endangered species. “Further research is needed to confirm these waters are indeed a great white breeding ground. But if it does, we would want lawmakers to step in and protect these waters to help white sharks keep thriving,” Sternes said.
30. What do we know about what appeared on Carlo s Gauna’s camera?
A. It is rare in the world. B. It is tough to identify.
C. It is not open to the public. D. It is unbelievable to scientists.
31. What does the white shark pup look like?
A. Pure gray. B. White only on the bottom.
C. Gray on the top. D. Pure white.
32 What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How great white females give birth to pups.
B. How the authors prove they saw a baby shark.
C. Why the authors believe they saw a newborn shark pup.
D. Why the authors think the white layer is a skin condition.
33. What does Sternes hope for if their assumption is confirmed?
A. Helping white sharks to stop breeding.
B. Using laws to protect shark pups and their habitats.
C. Listing white sharks as endangered species.
D. Further study to confirm white sharks breeding waters.

There is no school equal to a decent (体面的) home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.
There are two typical examples: Edison’s mother and our mother. As you all know, Thomas Edison is one of the most outstanding scientists and inventors in the world. Unbelievably, young Tom was in school for only three months. It is said that he liked to ask strange questions, many of which have nothing to do with learning. His teacher didn’t understand why he had so many strange questions. He didn’t want to teach Tom any more. He asked Tom’s mother to take the boy home. Tom’s mother taught him to read and write, and she found him to be a very good pupil. He learned very fast and became very interested in science. It was she who played an important role in Edison’s growth. Although we can’t compare with Edison, our mother played a more important role in our growth than his mother. Our dad was an English teacher who taught high school students. For many years, he had been cautious and conscientious (认真的) towards work. Mom stayed home and homeschooled their four children. Three of us had no trouble in learning but my sister Catherine still could not read by fifth grade, and worse still, did not even know the alphabet (字母表).
My mother did some research and found that Catherine had some sort of learning disability. She sent Catherine to a public school to get some help. Catherine made many friends at school and amazed everyone with her gift for telling creative stories in class, but she still couldn’t master reading skills. After all the testing was done, the school had my parents come in. They were told that based on the test results, they should just take Catherine home, which was very similar to Edison’s experience. However, the biggest difference is that Edison was not stupid, and my sister really had learning disabilities.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Tears of sadness ran down my dad’s cheeks.

But you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet;the cost can really add up. For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there’s a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute cafe. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3 pennies per minute or £1.80 an hour. Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through Wi-Fi. The new coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, believes his coffee shop is a bit like “social media”, but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes. The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time but not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.

A. Inactive. B. Invaluable.
C. Inaccessible.
B. Some other countries that waste produce.

In 1998 he went to court and succeeded in getting about 500,000 dollars from the Australian government as a form of compensation (赔偿).
There are many others in Australia who have suffered the same fate. Organisations are being set up to work for the rights of the Aborigines and to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again.
22. Why were aboriginal children taken away from their homes?
A. They were orphans.

26. What does the underlined word“debunked” in paragraph 1 mean?

B. The process of the research.
C. The participants of the research.
D. The findings of the research.
28. What contributes to the lack of women in STEM careers?
A. Mental capacity. B. Gender difference.
C. Traditional prejudice. D. Family background.
29. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. MRI- A Great Helper in Research
B. Toys- Boosters for STEM Potential
C. Boys and Girls: Equally Talented in Math
D. STEM Careers: Calling for More w omen

第一段中的“The low percentage of women in science ,technology, engineering, and mathematics(STEM) careers is often attributed (归因于) to men being believed to be better at the sort of thinking those fields require.” “young girls and boys use the same mechanisms and networks in the brain to solve math problems.”
根据第二段的内容“the team selected 104 young children, between 3 and 10 years old, divided almost equally by gender. The scientists used a functional MRI to observe their brain activity …”
根据最后一段的内容“it may be rooted in social and cultural conventions. Previous studies have indicated that parents tend to spend more time with young boys in play that inspire spatial cognition (空间认知)—such as toys that involve learning number skills and shapes and solving puzzles. Educators were also observed to spend more time with boys during math class.”
文章第一段中的“young girls and boys use the same mechanisms and networks in the brain to solve math problems”(年轻男孩和女孩大脑中使用相同的机制和网络来解决数学问题。)
因此,考生直接抓住第一段中的“young girls and boys use the same mechanisms and networks in the brain to solve math problems”即可找到文章中心。
D
D. Pure white.
32. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A 31. D 32. C 33. B

First, great white females give birth to live pups. A second reason is the presence of large, likely pregnant great whites in this location. Finally, this location off the coast of central California has long been proposed as a birthing location for great whites. Many scholars believe great whites are born farther out at sea.(尽管论文作者承认鲨鱼脱落的白色层可能是皮肤状况造成的,但两人认为他们看到的实际上是一只新生的大白鲨。
根据文章最后一段““Further research is needed to confirm these waters are indeed a great white breeding ground. But if it does, we would want lawmakers to step in and protect these waters to help white sharks keep thriving,” Sternes said.(“需要进一步的研究来确认这些水域确实为大白鲨的繁殖地。但如果确定是,我们将希望立法者介入保护这些水域,帮助大白鲨继续繁盛。”Sternes说道)”可知,如果他们的假设得到证实,Sternes希望利用法律保护鲨鱼幼崽及其栖息地。故选B。

65. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tears of sadness ran down my dad’s cheeks.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In time, Catherine got it.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Tears of sadness ran down my dad’s cheeks. However, my mom’s jaw was set in quiet determination. As they walked back to the car, she turned to him and said, “I know she’s not stupid. Soon after, my mom discovered a learning system that focused heavily on lesson repetition and building slowly on the previous exercises. She worked with Catherine for four hours every morning while the rest of us studied on our own. It was hard for both of them, but she often told crying Catherine, “Failure is not an option. You are going to learn to read, and we’ll both try! You have to learn to read! You will learn to read.”
In time, Catherine got it. By the time she graduated from eighth grade, she was reading almost at grade level. She continued improving and was reading above grade level when she graduated from high school. Catherine came to love reading and writing. She became a very famous writer. A number of wonderful novels were published all over the country. Many of her major works were popular with the public and some books were translated into other languages. All of this was because of a wonderfully devoted mother who was absolutely the best teacher ever—for all four of us.
