Andrew McCarthy stars roles in era-defining movies such as Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire and Less Than Zero. But he is also an award-winning travel writer whose books include The Longest Way Home (2012) and Walking With Sam (2021). In the new book, he looks back on an epic adventure, where he walked 500 miles across Spain’s Camino de Santiago with his 19-year-old son, Sam.
McCarthy had hoped the trip would be a way to re-examine their evolving relationship, as Sam was just stepping into his own manhood. “I wanted to get to know my son. Not just in the parent-child, dominant-submissive or unruly roles, but as adults, as equals, as peers (同龄人),” he said. “The Camino gave me the greatest luxury you have with adult children — which is time.” For McCarthy it was a chance to spend time with Sam, and perhaps avoid repeating the history he had with his own father. “My relationship with my dad ended pretty much when I left home at 17 years old, and I didn’t want that happen with my kids,” MeCarthy said.
The book’s structure follows the path of the Camino, with a chapter per day over the course.
It creates a pleasant rhythm of the trail. It also establishes a gradual sense of community and friendship among the other walkers they encounter, and paints a clear picture of McCarthy as somebody extremely in touch with his feelings.
Sometimes physical togetherness and shared experiences are the most you can ask for in a relationship, and there are lovely examples of both here. In one scene McCarthy realizes Sam is suffering from a sugar crash, and offers him a protein bar he’s been saving for just such a moment. “I reach out and rub his shoulder,” McCarthy writes.“He nods softly, gratefully. We sit together as thousands upon thousands of dandelion puffs (蒲公英) float in the air like dancing diamonds.” Walking with Sam captures this encouraging and hopeful expedition as the pair walk across the country and towards one another.
24.What do we know about Walking With Sam according to paragraph 1?
A.A fantasy novel. B.A travel memoir.
C.A prize-winning diary entry. D.An era-defining movie.
25.Why did McCarthy start the adventure?
A.To honor his father. B.To help his son fly the nest.
C.To bond with his son. D.To seek for writing inspiration.
26.McCarthy develops Walking with Sam by ______.
A.comparison and contrast B.cause and effect
C.facts and opinions D.sequence of events
27.What does the author think of Walking With Sam?
A.Plain but functional. B.Inspiring and touching.
C.Brief but informative. D.Humorous and straightforward.

“I spilled soup all over the table, but it wasn’t my fault”. “I got into trouble at school, but it wasn’t my fault.” Such statements are often heard. “It’s not my fault” is actually a common response for so many people and especially teenagers. Parents complain that they’re tired of the “excuses”.
The reason why variations of “it’s not my fault” are so popular is that they get us out of guilt, blame and anger. Those emotions may come from others’ reactions or our own self-talks. In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape responsibility and punishment for mistakes.
Some teens would benefit from decreasing their self-blame. Those who blame themselves for things that they can’t control tend to be highly self-critical and are more likely to be anxious.
Many teens overly rely on “it’s not my fault”. However, overuse of the phrase can result in feelings of helplessness to control their own lives. Besides, “it’s not my fault” focuses a teen’s attention on what is done as opposed to what needs to be done. In trying to get them to assume responsibility, many parents attempt to convince their children that something is their fault, but the approach tends to be ineffective. A more effective approach is to face up to drawbacks to find solutions to the drawbacks actively.
People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway. Getting stuck in sharing blame often keeps people from moving forward effectively. What does one do if he is pushed into a deep lake? One could certainly stay in water, yelling, “It’s not my fault.” However, that is not going to get him out of water. At some point, he needs to swim to shore, regardless of the fault.
Like most things in life, freeing ourselves from blame has its advantages and disadvantages. The question isn’t what is “right”, but what is most effective in moving forward.
28.Who is likely to rely on “it’s not my fault”?
A.A highly self-critical teenager.
B.A teenager unwilling to admit a fault.
C.A teenager facing up to his responsibilities.
D.A teenager anxious about uncontrollable things.
29.What is the author’s advice on getting teens to assume responsibility?
A.Letting them focus on what is done.
B.Persuading them to admit their fault.
C.Making them correct the mistake actively.
D.Helping them analyze the reason for the mistake.
30.Why does the author raise such a question in Paragraph 5?
A.To put forward a new solution to drawbacks.
B.To show handling problems should come first.
C.To explain why teenagers get stuck in sharing blame.
D.To analyze what kind of problem is caused by others.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To help teenagers out of self-blame.
B.To tell parents how to educate children.
C.To help teenagers face mistakes properly.
D.To tell children to do self-talks consciously.

Last year I averaged 9,370 steps a day. My smartphone counted. My daily aim? Ten thousand steps. Because goals.
Yet the concept of taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain health is rooted not in science but in marketing. In the 1960s, a Japanese company invented an early pedometer (计步器). Because the Japanese character for “10,000” looks like a person walking, the company called its device the 10,000-step meter. “It was just sort of a catchy phrase,” says I-Min Lee, a scientist at Harvard Medical School.
In 2019, Lee published a study investigating the actual effects of meeting the 10,000-step goal. The result? Some movement is good, and more is better, but the benefits decline at some point. Your personal peak depends on your age. People younger than 60 should indeed walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to get the best benefits in terms of lifespan (寿命). People older than 60 show the most benefit between 6,000 and 8,000 steps.
The difference is energy consumption. “We basically relate energy consumption to health outcomes,” Lee says. Walking for 60 minutes at 3.3 miles an hour and running for 30 minutes at 6 miles an hour use the same amount of energy. “The older you are, the less efficient you are with your steps,” Lee says. “Per step, older people use more energy.” Thus, they need fewer steps to achieve the same benefits.
Newer studies are moving beyond death rates to ask questions about the way steps may help to control blood pressure and weight. The goal, after all, is not just to live longer but to live healthier. Ful results are not in yet, so Lee’s advice is: “Tailor your steps according to what you are trying to achieve and according to who you are.”
32.The concept of taking 10,000 steps daily arises from ______.
A.the findings of scientific surveys B.the formation of a Japanese character
C.a marketing trick D.a healthy habit
33.What does Lee’s research find?
A.Walking step targets vary with age.
B.Walking more makes one look younger.
C.Old people benefit more from walking longer.
D.Reaching 10,000 steps daily appeals to many.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The difference in energy consumption among age groups.
B.The contrast between the benefits of walking and running.
C.The reason for setting different step goals based on age.
D.The link between energy consumption and health outcomes.
35.What will newer studies focus on?
A.How steps change one’s lifestyle. B.How steps affect one’s lifespan.
C.How steps reduce death rates. D.How steps boost healthy living.
While most of us work hard to shine at the presentations and speeches we can prepare for, we may find impromptu (即兴的) communication scary. Actually, you just need to learn specific skills to communicate effectively when put on the spot. Here are a few pointers.
36 What do you want your audience to know? How do you want them to feel, and what do you want them to do? Having a clear objective paired with an awareness of your audience will narrow your focus. Then you can prioritize what to say and choose your exact words more wisely.
Organize Your Thoughts. When making formal presentations, most people give a logical structure that audiences can easily follow. But few of us adequately organize thoughts in impromptu situations. 37 In fact, the best speakers maintain audience interest by demonstrating connections among specific points, ideas, for example.
Listen as well as you talk. 38 You should do the opposite: focus on listening so that you can better understand the in-the-moment needs and interests of your conversation partners and respond more effectively. Paraphrasing or asking open-ended follow-up questions can help confirm your understanding and provide extra time to think about your response.
Dare to be dull. Don’t feel you need to give a standout performance. One popular saying applies here, “ 39 ” Listeners are more likely to trust and approve of you when you speak like a human being rather than an actor or a robot. Research shows that the most effective speech includes moderate use of fillers such as “um” and “uh”.
The real problem in impromptu communication isn’t an inability to communicate. 40 Fortunately, a measure of experimentation thought, and practice of the skills can make impromptu speaking opportunities your time to shine.
A.Identify a communication goal.
B.He knows most who speaks least.
C.Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
D.It’s being so nervous that we struggle with the talks.
E.We may assume that it’s impossible to do so on the fly.
F.A clear structure enhances comprehension and engagement.
G.Most people obsess over what to say during impromptu encounters.

More Than a Medical Kit
“Anybody have a bandage?” a voice rang down the dorm hallway.
It was our first week at college and we were all experiencing nervousness. I had forgotten to bring snacks for late nights but would never ask any of my roommates to share theirs. I was shy, always worried about fitting in a new situation and meeting people.
Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and battling waves of post-high school sentimentality Books were scattered around my feet. Laundry items, desk supplies — all well-intentioned and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers’ thoughtfulness over and over during my college career.
But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. Medicine? A small packet of pills and creams, ointments and so on lay within the wrappings. Who would give that as a gift? I turned and Jenny, my best friend, grinned
“You’ll need that once you’re at school,” She pointed out. “You won’t have to chase down the campus nurse for every cough. Besides, that might bring you luck and chance.” Hugging me tightly, she added.
Good point. She knew how anxious and frightened I felt about stepping onto a new journey, without her for company.
Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed truck and slipped the bag of medicine in with all my necessities. I hardly thought about it once I reached campus, caught in the whirlwind of unpacking, book-buying, scheduling, and meeting new people.
When “anybody have a bandage?” rang out in the dormitory hall that day, I remembered my little medicinal package.
I swallowed self-consciously. “Actually,” I gave a little wave, “I have one.”
“Great,” the girl jumped off her bed and walked toward me.

D

M: On May 15, in the afternoon. So we still have five days left to get it finished.
W: So I think we need to leave out some of the information we’re including.
M: Yes. Mr. Smith advised us to focus on three forms of non-traditional energy and we can talk about solar bio-fuels. And what about the third energy source?
W: I was having difficulty choosing between nuclear and wind.
M: But dealing with nuclear is more difficult for us.
W: OK. I agree with you.
M: Then I’d like to suggest leaving out the background details.
W: I don’t think so. We should put the statistics on a worksheet to clearly support our main ideas.
M: You’re right.

A.In a radio studio. B.In a lab. C.In a gym.
15.What did Charles do in the history exams?
A.He thought of some images in the book.
B.He associated the knowledge with classic songs.
C.He recalled the contents by singing in his mind.
16.How many tips does Charles mention?
A.2. B.3. C.4.
17.What is the function of teaching others according to Charles?
A.To get some tips from others.
B.To build up your confidence before the exam.
C.To strengthen your understanding of the content.
【答案】14.A 15.C 16.B 17.C
W: Charles, can you give us some advice about improving our ability to memorize?
M: Yes! Try to visualize an image that is connected to the thing you need to remember, For example, you can use several images to remember a list of ingredients for a recipe.
W: Yes, that makes sense.
M: Singing can help with memorization too. It is one of the earliest memory tricks that are used for learning new concepts. I used to “sing” lists of historical facts and dates. It works.
W: And did you have to sing aloud in your history exams?
M: Not aloud! But I did use to sing in my head. And I always got good marks for history.
W: Any more tips, Charles?
M: Yes! I’ve saved the best one till last. It’s particularly relevant for any students who have tuned in. Teach whatever it is that you want to remember. So, if you’re studying for an English exam, teach the concepts to someone else. It really works because in order to teach something you need to digest it first.
W: Thank you, Charles. Now, I think we’ve got time for a couple of questions from our listeners.
18.What is the Geocaching?
A.A treasure hunt. B.A GPS device. C.A fitness coach.
19.What do we know about the boxes?
A.They are controlled remotely.
B.They contain varieties of goods.
C.They are placed in the neighborhood.
20.How does Geocaching benefit the kids?
A.It develops their social skills.
B.It exposes them to traditions.
C.It makes them willing to walk.
【答案】18.A 19.B 20.C
M: Geocaching is a great way to add interest to any walk. Turning a walk into an adventure is great, and turning it into a treasure hunt is even better. Geocaching involves using your GPS or smartphone to track down one of tens of thousands of secret treasures that have been planted all around the country. Those who know the treasures hide the treasure box and leave clues in the form of mapping so that anyone with a GPS device or smartphone loaded with the Geocaching APP can seek it out.
To the finder’s usual delight, most treasure boxes come stuffed with various surprises, such as latest novels, toys or dolls. These boxes are hidden almost everywhere. It will come as no surprise to discover that they are widely hidden in woodland, farmland and along the coast, but we’ve also found them in supermarket, car parks, in woods, at the residence and in community gardens. Finding treasure boxes firstly gives kids a reason to go for a walk and also teaches them micro skills of finding their way around, both digital and traditional.

根据文章第一段“Andrew McCarthy-stars roles in era-defining movies such as Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire and Less Than Zero. But he is also an award-winning travel writer whose books include The Longest Way Home (2012) and Walking With Sam (2021).(安德鲁·麦卡锡在时代定义的电影中扮演过重要角色,如《红粉佳人》、《圣艾尔摩之火》和《零度以下》。但他同时也是一位屡获殊荣的旅行作家,其著作包括《最长的回家路》(2012年出版) 和《与萨姆同行》(2021年出版) )”可知,《与萨姆同行》这本书是由一位获奖旅行作家所写,内容应与旅行相关,可能是一本旅行回忆录。故选B项。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“McCarthy had hoped the trip would be a way to re-examine their evolving relationship, as Sam was just stepping into his own manhood. “I wanted to get to know my son. Not just in the parent-child, dominant-submissive or unruly roles, but as adults, as equals, as peers,” he said.(麦卡锡曾希望这次旅行能成为重新审视他们父子关系演变的一种方式,因为萨姆正步入自己的成年期。“我想了解我的儿子。不仅仅是在父母与子女、支配与顺从或是叛逆的角色中,而是作为成年人,作为平等的人,作为同辈。”他如此说道)”可知,麦卡锡开始这段冒险是为了与他的儿子建立联系,作为成年人、平等的伙伴来了解彼此。故选C项。
26.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The book’s structure follows the path of the Camino, with a chapter per day over the course.(这本书的结构遵循了Camino路线的进程,沿途每天都设有一章节)”可知,《与萨姆同行》一书按照他们在Camino de Santiago行走的路径来结构化,每一天作为一个章节,这是按照事件发生的顺序来展开叙述的。故选D项。

C
根据第二段中的“The reason why variations of “it’s not my fault” are so popular is that they get us out of guilt, blame and anger.(各种各样的“这不是我的错”之所以如此流行,是因为它们能让我们摆脱内疚、责备和愤怒。)”可知,“这不是我的错”能使我们摆脱内疚、责备和愤怒,所以才会如此流行,结合下文中的“In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape responsibility and punishment for mistakes.(就青少年而言,他们常常试图逃避责任和对错误的惩罚。)”
根据第四段中的“In trying to get them to assume responsibility, many parents attempt to convince their children that something is their fault, but the approach tends to be ineffective. A more effective approach is to face up to drawbacks to find solutions to the drawbacks actively.(为了让孩子承担责任,许多父母试图让孩子相信有些事情是他们的错,但这种方法往往是无效的。更有效的方法是正视缺点,积极寻找解决办法。)”可知,很多家长用各种方法让孩子相信有些事情是他们的错,但这些经常是无效的,更有效的方法是让孩子正视缺点,主动寻找解决的方法,由此可知,作者建议让他们主动改正错误。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway. Getting stuck in sharing blame often keeps people from moving forward effectively.(人们可能不是所有问题的始作俑者,但无论如何他们必须解决问题。陷入互相指责的困境往往会阻碍人们有效地向前发展。)”可知,作者认为不论错误是谁的,都必须先要解决为题,否则会阻碍人们有效向前发展,进而在下文中提出问题“What does one do if he is pushed into a deep lake?(如果一个人被推入深湖中,他会怎么做?)”并进行分析,结合下文中的“At some point, he needs to swim to shore, regardless of the fault.(在某个时刻,他需要游到岸边,不管是谁的错误。)”
根据尾段“Like most things in life, freeing ourselves from blame has its advantages and disadvantages. The question isn’t what is “right”, but what is most effective in moving forward.(就像生活中的大多数事情一样,把自己从责备中解脱出来既有好处也有坏处。问题不在于什么是“正确的”,而在于什么是最有效的前进方式。)”可知,把自己从责备中解脱出来有好处也有坏处,但问题的根本不在于什么是正确的,而是什么是最有效的前进方式,结合上文中对“不是我的错”这一流行陈述的好处和坏处的分析,并用提问的方式表明无论谁的错,都应该先要解决问题,不断前进,所以本文的写作目的是帮助青少年如何正确地面对错误。故选C项。
D
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.C 35.D
根据第二段中“Yet the concept of taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain health is rooted not in science but in marketing.”(然而,每天走10000步来保持健康的概念并非源于科学,而是源于营销。)
根据第三段中“People younger than 60 should indeed walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to get the best benefits in terms of lifespan (寿命). People older than 60 show the most benefit between 6,000 and 8,000 steps.”(60岁以下的人确实应该每天走8000到10000步,以获得寿命方面的最佳效益。 故选A。
根据第四段“The difference is energy consumption. “We basically relate energy consumption to health outcomes,” Lee says. Walking for 60 minutes at 3.3 miles an hour and running for 30 minutes at 6 miles an hour use the same amount of energy. “The older you are, the less efficient you are with your steps,” Lee says. “Per step, older people use more energy.” Thus, they need fewer steps to achieve the same benefits.”(差别在于能源消耗。
根据最后一段“Newer studies are moving beyond death rates to ask questions about the way steps may help to control blood pressure and weight.”(新的研究不再局限于死亡率,而是开始探讨步数如何有助于控制血压和体重。)

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

Paragraph 2:
The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As I dugout the kit, we began to chat. I quickly found we had so much in common with each other. The next day, we even had our lunch together. Soon, many of the other girls in the dorm heard of my little kit and paid me a visit. One had bug bites—anti-iteh cream popped out of my supply. The roommate with the headache nearly kissed my hands when I passed her simple painkillers. As cold season approached, many needed cough drops. Each girl stayed loch at for a few moments.
The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships. As it broke fevers, it also broke the ice, allowing me to meet and be friend many in the dorm. Not until then did I realize how wise and considerate my dear friend Jenny was. I could hardly contain my gratitude and excitement so I called her and told her everything about her gift-that small packet of pills and creams. Actually, that was more than a medical kit. It was the chance to adapt to a new life.
