My son asked my husband and me several months ago if he could switch from his mainstream high school to an alternative education environment. At that time, I was unsure and a little heartbroken.
He wasn’t doing well in that school. In my head, I knew the best thing for him was to switch to another learning environment to complete his high school year. But my heart broke a little that he would not walk the same graduation field and stage that I had walked. The scenario I had created was no longer beneficial to his well-being.
My son is extremely shy and has always had a small friend group. Large groups are complex for him, and he was very upset at a school with over 2,500 kids as a child with social anxiety. A school of that size can be difficult for anyone, let alone an introvert (内向的人) with social anxiety.
We discovered that the continuation school was an option with the same general curriculum required by our state to graduate high school. The credits he had already earned would carry over, and he could graduate early. After talking, we decided that this was his best option.
By allowing him to choose this option, we have watched him thrive! The difference is astonishing. My son made friends; he was productive and participated in a life skills course to help himself with real-life studies. He got along well with his teachers and classmates.
The most significant change we saw was that he would come home smiling and happy, enthusiastic about his day. He was excited to share what he was learning and how his day had gone, which warmed my heart.
As his momma, this is all I needed — knowing that letting him choose what was suitable for his educational path was the right move.
24.How did the author feel on her son’s request at first?
A.Proud. B.Puzzled. C.Disappointed. D.Embarrassed.
25.What was the problem of the author’s son?
A.He had no friends.
B.He didn’t really like learning.
C.He was the slowest student in his class.
D.He was poor at communicating with others.
26.What did the family realize after learning about the continuation school?
A.It was a very satisfying option for them.
B.A mainstream high school was much better.
C.An alternative education was not advisable.
D.The son might have difficulty in graduating.
27.The underlined word “scenario” could be best replaced by _____.
A.plot B.history C.novel D.rule
C
With the ocean covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said scientists and researchers had depended on sonar (声呐) technologies to understand and map the sea floor which had charted only about 10% of the world’s ocean. For the ocean and coastal waters in the US, the number is just around 35%.
We know less about our planet’s ocean than what we know about the far side of the moon or the surface of Mars. Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera. Researchers have used ships to recharge cameras or observed with a camera tied to a ship to solve the issue, which is expensive and unsuitable for long-term observations.
Recently, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken a major step to iron out this problem by developing a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that could harvest energy underwater on its own for long periods.
To keep power consumption as low as possible, the researchers used off-the-shelf, ultra-low-power imaging sensors. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and sends image data wirelessly through the water.
The camera is powered by sound. It changes mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment. After getting and encoding image data, the camera also uses sound waves to send the data to a receiver that reconstructs the image. Those sound waves could come from any source, like a passing ship or marine life. As it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before getting it back, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species.
Now that researchers have demonstrated a working prototype (原型), they plan to enhance the device so it is practical in real-world settings. For future application, these cameras may be used to take images of ocean pollution and create more accurate models to monitor climate change to better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world, and advance various undersea scientific fields.
28.What do the data in paragraph 1 mainly show?
A.Undersea exploration is poor in the US.
B.Much of the planet’s ocean remains unexplored.
C.The mapping of the sea floor is time-consuming.
D.Technology development matters a lot to sea observation.
29.What limits the researchers’ undersea exploration according to the text?
A.The complexity of the sea environment.
B.The concern about potential sea pollution.
C.The shortage of investment in ocean exploration.
D.The inability to effectively power underwater cameras.
30.What does the underlined phrase “iron out” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Overcome. B.Face.
C.Analyze. D.Illustrate.
31.Which of the following can best describe the MIT underwater camera?
A.Secure and stable. B.Expensive but effective.
C.Impractical but advanced. D.Self-sufficient and energy-saving.
D
While stress is an unavoidable aspect of life, studies continue to show too much stress can have a bad impact on both health and well-being. More specifically, excess stress can lead to high blood pressure, increasing heart disease risk. With all that in mind, researchers from the Universities of Maynooth and Limerick set out to better understand how reactions to stressful events impact our future health, as well as if there are any factors that can play key stress-buffering (缓解压力) roles.
The research team suggests that previous research has shown that gratitude and affect-balance (balance of positive to negative emotions) play key stress-buffering roles. However, up until now there have been few studies examining the impact of these variables on cardiovascular (心血管) recovery from severe psychological stress. Researchers chose to focus on this consideration, as well as whether or not affect-balance moderates the relationship between gratitude and cardiovascular reactions to severe psychological stress.
The actual research portion of this project took place at Maynooth University and involved a total of 68 undergrad students (24 men, 44 women) between the ages of 18 and 57. The experiment featured lab tasks which caused stress among the participants, while researchers measured cardiovascular reactivity and recovery in response to the stress.
The ensuing results reveal that a state of gratitude predicts lower systolic (收缩的) blood pressure responses throughout the stress-testing period. This means, researchers say, that gratitude promotes a unique stress-buffering effect on both reactions to and recovery from severe psychological stress. The team also found that affect-balance increases the effects of grateful feelings.
In conclusion, researchers believe these findings hold clinical (临床的) usefulness. There are many low-cost ways to develop grateful feelings that can help promote improved well-being. For instance, one earlier study found cardiac patients who make use of gratitude journals have better cardiovascular outcomes than those who do not. Those earlier projects, in combination with these latest findings, strongly suggest that gratitude is a useful tool in the fight against stress and poor cardiovascular health.
32.What may high blood pressure result in according to paragraph 1?
A.A headache. B.A sleep disorder.
C.Heart disease. D.Difficult breathing.
33.How might the participants feel about the lab tasks?
A.Moved. B.Thankful. C.Disappointed. D.Anxious.
34.Why does the author give the example in the last paragraph?
A.To show gratitude is easy to practice.
B.To suggest we should learn more ways to relieve stress.
C.To explain why the findings are meaningful.
D.To show hospitals should use more treatment ways.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.We Should Deal with Stress Wisely
B.We Should Realize the Harm of Excess Stress
C.Excess Stress Can Cause High Blood Pressure
D.Gratitude Can Help Relieve Stress to Improve Heart Health

How to Read Candidates’ Body Language in an Interview
Body language matters, especially in interviews. 36 Our posture, gestures, movements or facial expressions can shape our reputations. Learning to read body language is about understanding candidates’ motives.
Reading body language during interviews can provide valuable insights into a candidate’s personality. 37 Here are some common interview body language signals that you can learn to read.
Observe extreme behaviour. A candidate’s harmless action doesn’t mean they won’t fitin well at your company. But be careful about extreme behaviours, like a person constantly checking their phone.
38 You can read people’s body language by observing changes in their movements or posture. Imagine, for example, that a candidate suddenly starts tapping their foot. Maybe they feel the interview is taking too long. Or perhaps they’re facing an uncomfortable question.
Connect the dots. 39 For example, people may cross their arms when they’re cold. But, when you see a candidate crossing their arms, crossing their legs and balling their fists at the same time, prepare yourself for an aggressive (咄咄逼人的) answer.
Candidate experience greatly depends on an interviewer’s body language. Positive body language can make candidates relax and open up. Negative body language can spark (引发) defensive and reserved reactions. 40
A.Spot the difference.
B.Ask detailed questions.
C.It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.
D.They don’t necessarily act the same way all the time.
E.However, understanding body language isn’t an exact science.
F.You can’t always tell what a specific gesture means on its own.
G.Be aware of mistakes to preserve a positive candidate experience.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mum for piano lessons. We were in the economic decline and she’d recently been out of work. She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I googled the photos of a keyboard, drew the keys on to a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes (音符) on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one — keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. After a while I could hear the notes in my head while pressing the keys on the paper. I spent six months playing scales (音阶) and chord sequences (和弦序列) without touching a real piano. Once my mum saw it wasn’t a fad (一时的怪念头), she borrowed some money from family and friends, and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how organic the sound of the piano was, as I had become familiar with the artificial electronic sound. The teacher tried to explain where middle C was but I could already play all the major and minor scales.
I passed my grade one after eight lessons and got distinction. By the time I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again, so I returned to my paper keyboard. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
For the grades above that, there’s an expectation that you put a certain sensitivity into your playing. The head of music at my school said I could practice on the school’s piano. I would wake up at 5: 30 am to get there in time and play until lessons started. I’d skip lunch and then practice after school until the caretaker kicked me out. At home, I’d have dinner, do three hours of revision, and then mental practice until I am.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One evening, when I was about 13, I came home, and my mom said she had a surprise for me.

A.It was a very satisfying option for them.
B.A mainstream high school was much better.
C.An alternative education was not advisable.
D.The son might have difficulty in graduating.
27.The underlined word “scenario” could be best replaced by _____.
A.plot B.history C.novel D.rule

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】24.C 25.D 26.A 27.A

【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是麻省理工学院的研究人员开发了一种将声波在水中传播的机械能转化为电能,为成像和通信设备提供动力的无线水下相机。
28.推理判断题。根据首段“With the ocean covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said scientists and researchers had depended on sonar (声呐) technologies to understand and map the sea floor which had charted only about 10% of the world’s ocean. For the ocean and coastal waters in the US, the number is just around 35%.(由于海洋覆盖了地球表面的70%以上,美国国家海洋和大气管理局表示,科学家和研究人员依靠声纳技术来了解和绘制海底地图,而海底地图只占世界海洋面积的10%左右。对于美国的海洋和沿海水域,这一数字仅为35%左右。)”可知,海洋占地球表面面积的70%,而科学家和研究人员依靠声纳技术来了解和绘制的海底地图只占10%左右,美国海域,这一数字也只占35%左右,这些数据表明了地球上的大部分海洋仍未被探索。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera.(缺乏观察的部分原因是水下摄像机的供电困难。)”可知,缺乏对海洋观察的部分原因是水下摄像机的供电困难,由此可知,无法有效地为水下摄像机提供动力限制了研究者的海底探索。故选D项。
30.词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera.(缺乏观察的部分原因是水下摄像机的供电困难。)” 结合画线短语后的“by developing a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that could harvest energy underwater on its own for long periods.(他们开发了一种无需电池的无线水下相机,这种相机可以在水下长时间收集能量。)”可知,他们开发了一种无需电池的无线水下相机,这种相机能在水下长时间收集能量,由此推知,麻省理工学院的研究人员应该是在解决这个问题方面迈出了重要的一步,所以画线短语的意思应与“解决”意义相近。故选A项。
31.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“The camera is powered by sound. It changes mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment.(这台摄像机是由声音驱动的。它将声波在水中传播的机械能转化为电能,为成像和通信设备提供动力。)”可知,该摄像机将声波转化成电能为成像和通信提供动力,由此可知,该相机可以自给自足,结合下文中的“As it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before getting it back, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species.(由于它不需要电源,相机可以连续运行数周才返回,使科学家能够在海洋的偏远地区寻找新物种。)”可知,这种摄像机不需要电源,所以可以节约能源。综合以上信息,该摄像机既可以自给自足又能节约能源。故选D项。

【答案】36.C 37.E 38.A 39.F 40.G

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参考范文
One evening, when I was about 13, I came home, and my mum said she had a surprise for me. I was expecting a chocolate bar, but it was a real piano, bought with more money borrowed from friends. It was the first time I'd played for her. She was expecting to hear a simple song but I played a very complicated one. She was in shock. And I could see that tears were rolling in her eyes as she hurried to fetch my dad from his room and almost pushed him into the sofa. “Just listen, ” she said.
My dad was very much against me playing, but when he heard that song, something inside him changed. He'd wanted me to study medicine. But it seemed that from that moment on, he hardened my resolve to keep playing. And it turned out that my dad was such a music lover. He would always drop everything he was doing when-ever he heard the sound of the piano keys. “You know I wanted you to do medicine because it's a profitable career. But I can see in your eyes your passion for the piano, so if you do love playing it, play like no one else would. ” These words meant a lot to me.
