A few years ago I took my sons for ice cream, and while my older son went inside to buy us our milk shakes, my younger son and I waited on the bench (长椅) outside.
At a certain point I realized that sitting right next to me were a little girl with a facial deformity (畸形), her friend (or sister), and her mother.
When my younger son looked up and saw her, he reacted exactly the way you might think a three-year old would react when seeing something that scared him: he started to cry—pretty loudly, too. I hurriedly tried to push him away in the stroller (婴儿推车), not for the benefit of him but to avoid hurting the girl’s feelings, and in my haste I caused my older son to knock over the shakes, and, well, it was a scene quite different from what I had hoped for. But as I pushed my younger son’s stroller away I heard the little girl’s mom say, in as sweet and calm a voice as you can imagine, “Okay, guys, I think it’s time to go.” And that just set me thinking.
For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about how that scene had played out. It occurred to me that they probably went through something like that hundreds of times a day. What would that be like? What could I be teaching my children so they could understand how to respond better next time? What I should have done, instead of trying to avoid the situation, was involve the girl and her mother in conversation. If my son cried, so be it: kids cry. I should have set a better example for him, and shown him there was nothing to fear.
As I was thinking about the scene, the song Wonder by Natalie Merchant came on the radio that night, and something about the words to the song just got to me. That very night, I started writing Wonder, a story about a boy with a facial difference.
24.What made the younger son cry?
A.That his mother pushed him away. B.That his brother upset the milk shakes.
C.That he was unwilling to react to the girl. D.That he was scared by the girl’s appearance.
25.The underlined word “haste” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.hurry B.doubt C.sorrow D.turn
26.Why did the author keep thinking about the scene?
A.She regretted not behaving properly. B.She regretted not comforting her son.
C.She wanted to write a novel based on it. D.She wanted to clear up the misunderstanding.
27.What does the author want to express through the story?
A.Don’t judge a book by its cover. B.One good turn deserves another.
C.A kind gesture can reach a wound. D.Think twice before making a final decision.
C
We have all heard how plastic pollution has overflowed every corner of the world. Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery that microplastics are even found in the human bloodstream.
After analyzing blood samples (样本) from 22 healthy people, researchers found microplastics in 17 of them! Most of the microplastics were classified as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly found in drink bottles, and there were small amounts of polyethylene, which makes up plastic bags.
Although the exact chemical effects of microplastics on our bodies are unknown, it is clear that the increasing amounts of plastic in our environment could bring a risk to human cells in the future.
Microplastics were never considered a significant threat to the atmosphere until recent studies began to reveal that they could be found everywhere across the skies. For example, scientists recently discovered the presence of microplastics in the Pyrenees Mountain Range in Europe, believed to have arrived by rain or snow.
The low mass of microplastics makes them spread through air, which is why they can travel hundreds, even thousands, of miles from their source. They are also likely to spread through wastewater, oceans, and even soil.
Microplastics that are being blown and swept into the air have the potential to affect air quality and cloud formation. In fact, massive microplastics in the air could form such a kind of clouds that tend to stick around longer than naturally forming clouds.
With microplastics accumulating in the air we breathe, there is also an increasing concern that they may affect human lungs. The new study will allow scientists to better understand the impacts on human health and is a reminder of the need to find other replacements for plastic.
28.What have scientists discovered about microplastics recently?
A.They are mainly made up of PET. B.They’re a major source of pollution.
C.They exist everywhere in the world. D.They’ve found their way into human bodies.
29.Why is the Pyrenees Mountain Range mentioned in the fourth paragraph?
A.To present a fact. B.To provide evidence.
C.To study a phenomenon. D.To introduce a topic.
30.What does the underlined word “accumulating” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Becoming plentiful. B.Keeping declining.
C.Staying unchanged. D.Remaining unnoticed.
31.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A book review. B.An academic paper.
C.A scientific report. D.An environment brochure.
D
Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.
This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.
This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming.Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer tree covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.
We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.
32.According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may
A.result in a warming climate
B.cause the forest fires to occur more frequently
C.lead to a longer fire season
D.protect the forests and the environment there
33.The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT
A.large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere
B.the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase
C.snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space
D.ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun
34.Earlier studies about northern forest fires
A.analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate
B.indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere
C.suggest that people should take measures to protect the environment
D.suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming
35.From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may
A.warm the climate as the supposition goes
B.allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate
C.destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice
D.help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

How to Overcome Challenges When Learning from Failure
Failure is a bitter pill to swallow, isn’t it? But, it’s often in the most difficult moments, in the ashes of defeat, that we find our greatest opportunities for growth. 36 This guide will look into the common challenges associated with learning from failure and how to overcome them.
● Dealing with emotional stress and burnout
Failure often comes with a heavy emotional burden. 37 The first step in overcoming this challenge is acknowledging these emotions. It’s okay to feel disappointed — but don’t let your failure define you. Instead, view it as a temporary setback, not an endpoint.
● Maintaining focus and vision
After a failure, it’s easy to lose sight of your original vision. But maintaining your focus on your long-term goals is critical. Take a step back, reflect on your vision, and rearrange your strategies accordingly. Yes, you might need to adjust your plans or timelines, but don’t let failure ruin your overall vision. 38
● Continuous learning and skill development
The greatest lesson from failure is the opportunity to learn. Develop a growth mindset and invest in continuous learning — attend workshops, read books, or take online courses. 39 Analyze your mistakes, draw lessons, and use those insights to refine your strategies. With each failure, you’re beginning with more experience.
● Accepting failure as a pathway to success
40 It’s merely a detour on the road to success. It offers an incomparable opportunity for growth and innovation. By addressing these challenges with the right mindset, you can transform your setbacks into comebacks and transform failure into your stepping-stone towards success.
A.Don’t forget that failure itself is a teacher.
B.Learning from failure can be complicated.
C.To strike this balance, make data-driven decisions.
D.Failure is not the opposite of success — it’s a part of it.
E.You can adapt to changes and avoid the same mistakes.
F.You kicked off this journey for a reason — hold onto that.
G.Feelings of inadequacy, stress, and fear can quickly lead to burnout.

Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!” “No,” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.” “We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary.
“We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside. “Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?
All of a sudden, the dinner table moved and the door was forced open. Water poured in. Mary burst out crying. “Upstairs!” Dad ordered. They rushed to the second floor, only to find the whole neighborhood had been surrounded by water.

Just then they heard a helicopter (直升机) flying in the distance. Its roar gradually grew louder, bringing a ray of hope in the midst of the chaos. Dad took out a flashlight from the disaster supplies bag, dashed to the window and shone a beam of light through the rain. Soon, the helicopter spotted them and hovered nearby, lowering down a rope ladder. Grasping the ladder firmly, Dad helped his wife and daughter climb up first. As they all were lifted into the air, they breathed a sigh of relief.
Three days later, they returned home and found their house in a mess. Muddy water had stained every inch of the once-clean space and the smell of dampness filled the whole house. A wave of sadness washed over them, but they quickly recovered themselves and set out to clean up the mess. Dad handled the mud-covered floors while Mum and Mary sorted through the damaged belongings. They were convinced that as long as they were alive and together, their home would return to its former state and everything was going to be OK.

【原文】
HI, I’m Melanie and I’m here to present our ideas for an anti-smoking public service video called “Kick it in!” This video forms part of the government’s “Healthy Living” campaign, which aims to promote a more active lifestyle. It is the first in a series of three, the other two being healthy eating and responsible drinking.
As you may know, when the anti-smoking campaign came in a few years ago, the number of smokers went down dramatically. However, since then, recent reports show that these figures have been going up again, particularly among the under 20s. This video is designed to discourage teenagers from taking up the habit.
The video itself follows a few days in the life of an unhealthy teenager and the effects smoking is having on him. This is quite different from the lives of those of his healthier, more active friends. Basically, we want to get across the idea that there’s a cost linked with smoking -a cost in terms of money, friends and your health. OK, has anybody got any questions?

B
【参考答案】
24.D 25.A 26.A 27.C
根据第二段“At a certain point I realized that sitting right next to me were a little girl with a facial deformity (畸形), her friend (or sister), and her mother.”(在某个时刻,我意识到坐在我旁边的是一个面部畸形的小女孩,她的朋友(或妹妹)和她的母亲。),根据文章第三段“When my younger son looked up and saw her, he reacted exactly the way you might think a three-year old would react when seeing something that scared him: he started to cry—pretty loudly, too.”(当我的小儿子抬起头看到她时,他的反应就像一个三岁的孩子看到吓到他的东西时的反应一样:他开始哭了起来,而且哭得很大声。)可推知,小儿子是因为被小女孩的外貌吓到而哭泣的。故选D。
25.词句猜测题。根据文章第三段“I caused my older son to knock over the shakes, and, well, it was a scene quite different from what I had hoped for.”(我把我的大儿子撞倒了,嗯,这是一个与我所希望的完全不同的场景)可知,作者在匆忙中出错。所此处的“haste”意为“匆忙”。故选A。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about how that scene had played out. It occurred to me that they probably went through something like that hundreds of times a day. What would that be like? What could I be teaching my children so they could understand how to respond better next time? What I should have done, instead of trying to avoid the situation, was involve the girl and her mother in conversation.”(在那一天的剩余时间里,我无法停止思考那个场景是如何发生的。 故选A。
27.推理判断题。根据第四段“What I should have done, instead of trying to avoid the situation, was involve the girl and her mother in conversation. If my son cried, so be it: kids cry. I should have set a better example for him, and shown him there was nothing to fear.”(我应该做的,而不是试图避免这种情况,是让那个女孩和她的母亲参与到对话中。

32.细节理解题。根据第二段“This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions.(这一发现表明,采取措施防止北方森林减少温室气体的释放,可能会使北方地区的气候变暖。)”可知,这样的措施最终可能导致了北部地区的气候变暖。故选A项。
33. 推理判断题。根据第三段“The following spring however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer tree covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.( 然而,第二年春天,火灾区域内的土地比火灾前更明亮,因为覆盖地面的树木更少。地面上的雪将更多的阳光反射回太空,导致降温。)”可知,地上的雪反射阳光这是大火的间接的影响,是在第二年春天的时候发生的事情,并不是immediate effects。故选C项。
34. 细节理解题。根据第三段“Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.(其他科学家的早期研究表明,北部地区的火灾会加速气候变暖,因为燃烧树木和植物产生的温室气体会释放到大气中,从而锁住热量。)”可知,早期研究表明火灾会加速气候变暖。故选D项。

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【参考答案】
