On a Saturday morning last November, I got up at 5 to be at the Armory track on 168th Street in Harlem, a neighborhood in Manhattan for the girls’4×2 relay race (接力赛).
I joined the team when I was a freshman at Abraham Lincoln High School. I hadn’t considered it until a girl came up to me and said, “You look like a good runner. Would you like to join the track team?” She thought I would make a good runner because she saw my legs and arms were built, but I was just naturally slim.
I was excited and surprised, “I don’t know. What do I have to do?”
“It is a lot of hard work and devotion. It’s not easy.”
She was right. My team had practice every day from 3:30 to 6 except for Fridays. When we didn’t have practice, I’d run on my own on the boardwalk. I got faster and focused. Track helped me get away from troubles. Arguments with my mom, problems with schoolwork, and dramas with the kids at school. I felt calm every time I ran.
I got to the Armory at 7. My team was already there. We gave each other hugs and high fives. When the officials called for the relay race, I went out to the starting line. Then the gun went off. As I pounded the track, I was focusing so much on myself. I started running away from my problems. I couldn’t see anyone or anything but the finish line. Everything else was just a blur. I fought to the finish line. I wasn’t only fighting against the other teams; I was also fighting to win my battle against my stress.
I could feel the wind blowing against my skin. I felt like I was flying. My stress disappeared. I came in second as I passed the baton (接力棒) to my teammate.
24.Why did the author take up running?
A.By chance. B.Due to stress. C.Out of interest. D.For weight loss.
25.What benefit did the author get from running?

C.The training hardship. D.The race purpose.
27.What can we learn form the passage?
A.Every dog has its day. B.Challenges build character.
C.Talent is the key to success. D.Accidents can lead to the right path.

The new e-skin improves tasks requiring accuracy (精确) and force control, overcoming a big challenge in advancing technology. Unlike traditional e-skins , this new e-skin stays accurate even when it stretches. “Much like human skin has to stretch and bend as we move, so does e-skin,” explains Nanshu Lu, a professor in the Cockrell School.
The breakthrough lies in an innovative hybrid response pressure sensor that Lu and her partners have developed over years. Lu sees the stretchable e-skin as an important part of a robot hand that can mirror the softness and sensitivity of a human hand. This new e-skin technology senses pressure from contact, letting the attached machine knowhow much force to use to, for example, grab a cup or touch a person. In demonstrations, the new e-skin allowed the robot hand to adaptto various sensitive tasks, such as accurately measuring human pulse (脉搏) and pulse waves, securely holding objects without dropping them and even handling unexpected items like coins inside a glass or pressing on a potato chip without breaking it.
Lu and her team are currently exploring potential applications, including partnering to build a robotic arm equipped with the e-skin technology. They have also applied for a basic patent (专利) for the e-skin, indicating its potential for business use. In a world where the aging population exceeds (超过) the number of caregivers, the need for efficient and gentle care solutions is necessary. Lu believes robots equipped with advanced technologies like the stretchable e-skin could play a vital role in dealing with this global challenge.
Beyond medicine,human-caring robots could be used in disasters. They could search for injured and trapped people in an earthquake or a collapsed building. From healthcare to disaster response, the potential is significant. With further development and cooperation with robotics companies, Lu hopes to see this e-skin technology make its way to the market, marking the beginning of a new era ofhuman-robot interaction and care.
28.What advantage does the newe-skin have over traditional e-skins?
A.It keeps accurate even when stretching. B.It enables robots to move at a fast speed.
C.It allows robot hands to bend into all shapes. D.It helps robot hands control with less force.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The wide applications of the new e-skin. B.The important development of the new e-skin.
C.The major challenge of the pressure sensor D.The strong function of the pressure sensor.
30.What can robots with the new e-skin do for the global challenge of aging population?
A.Reduce healthcare costs. B.Limit global business use.
C.Replace human caregivers. D.Improve medical care efficiency.
31.What is the author’s attitude to the future of the new e-skin?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear C.Optimistic. D.Subjective.
D
We are seeing the risks that A.I. presents to society. Deep fakes, a form of photoshop that creates realistic images with the help of A.I. learning, has been used for news reports. Chatbots and A.I. software have a well-documented history of showing racist behavior. The potential widespread job loss at the hands of A.I. puts us all at risk for economic and political trouble.
In response, many people have called for increased regulation (监管). But most policymakers simply do not understand artificial intelligence enough to carry out meaningful regulations, and the speed at which A.I. is progressing makes it nearly impossible for them to catch up.
The real solution? An A.I. pause, a short-time stop. Already, the idea has been supported by over 1,100 individuals involved in the artificial intelligence community. Under an A.I. pause, no development or research, academic or business, could be done to advance artificial intelligence beyond a certain “power level”.
This would give governments the time to analyze and regulate the artificial intelligence field. They would be able to establish policies to protect the jobs of groups like truck drivers whose jobs could be wiped out by A.I.-driven cars. They could create bottom-line standards for crime recognition software to pass before it could be used by local police.
On top of that, an A.I. pause could also be good to the companies and research groups developing A.I. models. A pause in the “A.I. arms race” could allow groups like OpenAI to devote more resources to addressing the faults in their current A.I. software rather than rushing to develop more advanced models. A pause could ultimately lead to a superior final product.
A.I. could be one of the most beneficial inventions to the human race, but it could also be one of the most societally cataclysmic. With an A.I. pause, we’ll have the opportunity to improve upon and understand A.I. technology, while ensuring that its development is in harmony with our society.
32.What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A.A.I. is growing under control. B.Regulations make little difference.
C.The government won’t fail to regulate A.I. D.Politicians should keep a closer eye on A.I.
33.What is the main idea of paragraphs 4 and 5?
A.The reasons for an A.I. pause. B.The problems of an A.I. pause.
C.The definition of an A.I. pause. D.The benefits of an A.I. pause.
34.What does the “A.I. arms race” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.A contest to build arms for robots.
B.A contest to develop A.I. for the military.
C.A competition for advanced A.I. technologies.
D.A competition for A.I.-powered sports equipment.
35.What does the underlined word “cataclysmic” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Disastrous. B.Inspiring. C.Beneficial. D.Widespread.

Does your teenager seem addicted to the Internet? Probably yes. 36 At first, parents welcome the Internet into their homes, believing they are opening up an exciting new world of educational chances for their children. 37 Instead of using the Internet for homework or research, they are spending hours messaging with friends, playing online games or talking to strangers in chat rooms.
Keeping a healthy balance between entertainment media and other activities in their children’s lives has always been a challenge for parents. The Internet has made this challenge even more difficult. 38
However, parents are usually not aware that there is a problem until it becomes serious. This is because it is easy to hide what you are doing online and Internet addiction is not widely recognized by the medical community.
Children and young people can easily become hooked on online activities such as multi-player games, instant messaging and chat rooms. The most vulnerable children are those who are unpopular or shy with peers. 39 Boys, in particular, are frequent users of online role-playing games, where they assume new identities and interact with other players. For the children who are not so outgoing, playing these games with thousands of other users may apparently be a social activity. 40 . So parents need to help children limit the online time to an appropriate amount.
A.That is especially obvious when it comes to online social games.
B.In fact, playing too much can further keep them away from friends and peers.
C.The amount of time teenagers spend online is a source of concern for many parents.
D.But numerous parents don’t discover this worrying situation and ignore it naturally.
E.However, many parents soon realize that their kids were gradually becoming Internet addicts.
F.The engaging nature of the Internet makes many children lose track of time when they’re online.
G.They can be easily attracted to the opportunities for creating new identities in online communities.

It was in the chilly midwinter, and the wandering couple walked through the freezing night with heavy steps, seeking shelter. The father-to-be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn where his tired companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. She labored along, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind. When her time came, it must not be out here along the roadway.
Their names were not Mary and Joseph, but Pepper and Cooper. Nor were they man and wife, but rather a pair of dogs, and the place was on a rural highway outside of town.
Night fell. Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see, but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags. What were they doing out here on this road?
He parked his truck and approached the animals. Gus bent down and stretched out his hands to the dogs, which made no effort to escape. Gus read their tags by his truck’s headlights. He pulled out his phone to call the number listed, but it was snowing so hard that his screen blurred He placed the dogs in his truck, on the floor of the passenger side. By the time he came around the driver’s side, he found that they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled (依偎) together there. Gus dried his phone, snapped a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife, Katie Kiebel.
Then he dialed the number from the dog’s tags. A man answered and immediately sounds defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.
“I gave those dogs away,” the man said. “They’re not mine anymore.”
“Well, do you want them back?”
“No. I can’t take care of them.”
The man hung up.

Not knowing what to do, Gus looked over at them. Gus then tried calling the county dog warden’s office .Being after hours, the best he could do was leave a message, but what to do next? Gus had always wanted beagles as pets, but he and his wife already had a dog and couldn’t take on two more. With nothing left to do, he called Katie.
“You cannot put them back in the snow,” Katie said. Katie told Gus to bring them home, which is probably what he was hoping to hear anyway but just wanted confirmation. Once there, the good -hearted couple prepared a bed for the Cooper and Pepper on their warm, enclosed porch. They also set out food and water for them to replenish their energy. The exhausted dogs snuggled together, Cooper lifting his weary head from time to time to fuss over Pepper. The two would spend the night there, safe and warm, until morning came.

Good evening, boys and girls. Welcome to our Daily English. Do you remember what we talked about last week? Yes, British food culture. Today, our topic is English idioms (习语). English idioms, proverbs, and expressions are important parts of everyday English. They come up all the time in both written and spoken English. Because idioms don’t always make sense literally, you need to be familiar with the meaning and usage of each idiom. It may seem like a lot of work, but learning idioms is also very interesting. What’s more, learning to use common idioms and expressions will help you sound like a native speaker, so it’s a good idea to master some of these expressions. For example, do you know what the meaning of “dog days” is? It means very hot days. The phrase “hold your horse” means waiting and being patient. “Pig out” means eating a lot of things. “Nest egg” means the money saved for the future. Can you find the similarity of these idioms? Today, those idioms are connected with animals. Next Friday, we will talk about idioms about colors. I hope you have a happy weekend!

故填have been achieved。
故填where。
those指代和前文中同类不同物的复数名词,实际此处指的是“Russia’s and the US’s space programmes”。故填those。
故填to send。
故填a。

__________________________________________
