In Michigan, Sky Adventures celebrates with champagne (香槟) at the end of each one-hour flight, which costs about $190 per person.
Sea Cave Kayak Tours
Just a few hours’ drive from Chicago and Minneapolis, there’s a natural beauty in Wisconsin that looks like the Pacific Coast’s rock formations. Even tourists who’d like to try for the first time can tour the sea caves of the Apostle Islands by kayak, paddling through tunnels and watching the sunset after emerging from hidden caves. Tours start at $55 per person.

As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. ”This certainly applies to New York-born competitive sailor Cole Brauer, the first American woman to competitively sail solo (独自) around the world. Her calm personality and rich knowledge of the sport are the perfect recipe for success, as Brauer serves as a leading figure in this industry. The 29-year-old began the Global Solo Challenge departing from A Coruna, Spain, in October 2023. Finally, she made her way back to land in March 2024, aboard her boat named First Light. This competition is for sailors who desire a challenge to sail around the sea, sharpening their skills with each wave they leave behind them.
Throughout her months at sea, Brauer was not frightened by the wildly unpredictable behaviors of Mother Nature. She worked tirelessly towards achieving her incredible achievement. Along the way, the determined competitor recorded her 130-day journey at sea on Instagram. In addition to documenting her experiences, Brauer also educated her viewers on various sailing terms and the application of different sailing techniques. For example, she references the term “reefing” the sail. This means to lower your sail to accommodate increases in wind, allowing the boat to maintain a manageable speed that allows its captain to have more controlled steering (驾驶) .
As a former student of the University of Hawaii, Brauer achieved many academic and athletic achievements. From earning the 2017 Jack Bonham Award for academic and athletic performance to being a part of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Academic All-American Team twice, she continued to raise the bar. And with this latest challenge, Brauer had opportunities to improve her skills in the unique backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.
As she sailed from Spain to South Africa and Australia, Brauer finally crossed the Atlantic Ocean back to her starting point — A Coruna. Her dedicated spirit, enthusiasm for life, and desire to inspire young women to pursue their dreams shone through her expedition.
4. What’s the key to Brauer’s success?
A. Her good luck and previous experience.
B. Her academic background and desire for success.
C. Her willingness to challenge and love for adventure.
D. Her calm personality and deep understanding of sailing.
5. What did Brauer do during the competition?
A. She doubted her sailing skills occasionally.
B. She documented her sea journey on Instagram.
C. She predicted behaviors of Mother Nature successfully.
D. She controlled the speed based on viewers' techniques.
6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. The Atlantic Ocean was easy to sail through.
B Sailing skills were enhanced during the voyage.
C. Brauer dropped out of the University of Hawaii.
D. Brauer had an average performance in academics.
7. What might be the best title for the text?
A. A Special Young Woman B. The Vital Sailing Skills
C. Sailing around the World D. Meeting New Challenges
C
Some commonly recommended strategies for managing anger, including hitting a punching bag (拳击袋), jogging and cycling, aren’t effective at helping people cool off. That’s the key takeaway of our new review of 154 studies that looked at how activities that increase versus decrease physiological arousal affect anger and aggression.
Arousal is how researchers describe how energized someone is. When you’re in a state of high physiological arousal, you’ll have increased heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. Anger is a negative emotion associated with high physiological arousal.
In our study, we found that activities that influence arousal levels had a deep impact on anger and aggression. By engaging in activities that decrease arousal, such as deep breathing, muscle relaxation, yoga, and mindfulness, you can control, or “turn down”, your angry feelings.
Crucially, our combined study of participants from multiple studies found that activities that help decrease arousal worked across diverse settings, including in the laboratory and in real-world situations, both of line and online, and in both group and individual sessions. In addition, activities that turn down arousal were effective for a wide variety of people—students and nonstudents, criminal offenders and non-offenders, those with and without disabilities.
In contrast’some activities people use to manage their anger amp up (加剧) arousal and increase anger and aggression levels. Jogging, a popular stress-relief activity, actually increased anger in the studies we looked at. The repetitive nature of jogging may cause feelings of monotony and frustration, potentially increasing anger rather than alleviating it. Instead, engaging in ball sports and physical education classes decreased anger.
Likewise, venting (发泄) anger increased anger and aggression. This research helps dismiss the belief that it is good to blow off steam and “let it out”. Skip screaming into your pillow or hitting a punching bag. Save your money rather than going to a room to break stuff with baseball bats. Such activities are of little use.
8. What can we know about the new review?
A. It looked at how to control anger.
B. It was about 154 studies on anger.
C. It focused on the effects of activities on anger.
D It suggested some ways to reduce physiological arousal.
9. What does the author suggest people do when they are angry?
A. Go jogging B. Do some yoga.
C. Scream into a pillow. D. Hit a punching bag.
10. What does the underlined word “monotony” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Boredom. B. Fear. C. Excitement. D. Satisfaction.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the popular stress-relief activities?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
D
Plants can often tell when they’re in danger — by smell. But not all leaves can smell threats equally well. In corn plants, baby leaves do this best, new data showed.
“They sense this — like OK, danger is at the corner, we better prepare,” says Lei Wang. He’s a plant biologist at the University of Ben in Switzerland. He and his colleagues shared the new findings in Current Biology.
Many plants strengthen their chemical protection when they are about to be eaten by insects. One way plants senis such threats is through scent (气味). They can detect odor molecules (气味分子) floating through the air. Such odors may come from an insect’s saliva (唾液) or from nearby injured plants.
But scientists don’t know which parts of plants sense danger. (Obviously, plants don’t have noses. ) And they know even less about what goes on inside plants for them to process: danger!
Wang and his team set out to study this warning system in corn plants. But they ran into a problem. When exposed to “threat” scents, adult leaves didn’t respond much. The researchers turned to baby leaves instead. In the lab, young corn leaves seemed better able to sense danger than older ones. They responded more strongly to a common danger-signaling scent. (It smells like freshly cut grass. )
It’s not clear why young corn leaves smell trouble better than older ones do. Maybe it helps protect these more weak leaves. Or, since young leaves often grow at the top of a plant, they might better detect scents blowing from long distances. These questions will need more study.
Wang hopes his research can help create smarter crops that are better at resisting insects. In the long run, that should reduce the need for pesticides. “My parents are farmers,” Wang says. “So this research is not just to satisfy my curiosity. I really want to solve some urgent questions in agriculture.”
12. What do plants detect through scent?
A. Injuries of other plants.
B. Saliva of nearby insects.
C. Odor molecules in the air.
D. Threats from their environment.
13. Why did Wang and his team turn to study baby leaves?
A. Baby leaves were easier to study.
B. Baby leaves were more likely to be hurt by threats.
C. Adult leaves didn’t respond to “threat” scents at all.
D. They can conduct the study more effectively.
14. What does Wang expect his research will lead to?
A. The development of smarter pesticides.
B. The creation of more insect-resistant crops.
C. The production of stronger smelling crops.
D. The improvement of farmers’ living conditions.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain how plants detect threats.
B. To introduce a new way of protecting plants.
C. To report on a study about plants’ warning system.
D. To discuss the importance of plant biology research.

第二节 续写 ( 满 分 2 5 分 )
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up knowing I was different, and I hated it.
I was born with a cleft palate (腭裂), and when I started to go to school, my classmates, who were constantly teasing me, made it clear to me how I looked to others: a little girl with a misshapen lip. I couldn't even blow up a balloon without holding my nose.
When schoolmates asked, “What happened to your lip? ”, I would tell them that I'd fallen as a baby and cut it on a piece of glass. Somehow it seemed more acceptable to have suffered an accident than to have been born different. By the age of seven I was convinced that no one outside my own family could ever like me.
And then I entered the second grade, and Mrs. Leonard's class. She was pretty and fragrant, with shining brown hair and warm, dark eyes that smiled even on the rare occasions when her mouth didn't.
Everyone adored her. But no one came to love her more than I did for a special reason.
The time came for the annual hearing tests” iven at our school. I was barely able to hear anything out of one ear, and was not about to reveal yet another problem that would single me out as different. So I cheated. I had learned to watch the other children and raise my hand when they did during group testing. The whisper test”, however, required a different trick. Each child would go to the door of the classroom and close one ear with a finger. Then the teacher would whisper something which the child would repeat. The same thing was done for the other ear. I had discovered that nobody checked to see how tightly the untested ear was being covered, so I merely pretended to block mine.
As usual, I was the last, and all through the testing I wondered what Mrs. Leonard might say to me.
My turn came. I turned my bad ear to her, plugging up the other with my finger, and then gently backed my finger out enough to be able to hear. I waited, and then came the words that changed my life forever.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mrs. Leonard, the pretty, fragrant teacher I adored, said softy, “I wish you were my little girl. ”

The cost is $84 for each adult, and it’s free of charge for children. The company also guides multi-day trips.
Hot Air Balloon Ride
Hot air ballooning is popular in the West, where there is a lot of sky and not a lot of trees, but it’s possible to find balloon rides in most states. Trips are perhaps most spectacular at sunrise and sunset. Rainbow Ryders in Albuquerque, New Mexico, offers a three-to four-hour sunrise tour for $168 per person.

B. Sailing skills were enhanced during the voyage.
C. Brauer dropped out of the University of Hawaii.
D. Brauer had an average performance in academics.
7. What might be the best title for the text?
A. A Special Young Woman B. The Vital Sailing Skills
C. Sailing around the World D. Meeting New Challenges
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7.

D. It suggested some ways to reduce physiological arousal.
9. What does the author suggest people do when they are angry?
A. Go jogging B. Do some yoga.
C. Scream into a pillow. D. Hit a punching bag.
10. What does the underlined word “monotony” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Boredom. B. Fear. C. Excitement. D. Satisfaction.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the popular stress-relief activities?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. B

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Mrs. Leonard, the pretty, fragrant teacher I adored, said softly, “I wish you were my little girl. ”I was completely astonished by what I heard. Tears welled up in my eyes and trickled down my cheeks. I couldn’t believe that someone as wonderful as Mrs. Leonard would actually say that to me. She didn’t treat me as if I were different, and with her words, she made me forget who I was. In that moment, all my insecurities and fears disappeared, replaced by a feeling of being truly loved and accepted.
From that day on, I had a newfound confidence. I walked tall and proud, with my head held high. I no longer felt like an outcast because of my cleft palate. Mrs. Leonard’s kind words had a profound impact on me, and I made a promise to myself to never let anyone’s judgment hold me back again. I started to embrace my differences and realized that they made me unique. And I will always be grateful to Mrs. Leonard for giving me the strength to do so.
