A few years ago, I was leaving the dog shelter where I worked only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The shelter’s owners are known as animal rescuers, and I figured someone had abandoned him over the fence. The kid was visibly nervous but stood perfectly still as I approached.
I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, and chickens, but never a goat. The tiny kid was too adorable to resist. I named him Quincy, and with the help of some experienced friends, bottle-fed him in my bathroom.
Quincy proved to be quite sharp-witted. When he was about a week old, I knocked on the bathroom floor and said “lie down”. I was astonished when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.
A quick study! Quincy learned to lie down, bow, and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my SUV when I say “load up”, and spends the day wandering with my dogs, whom he considers his fellow goats. He knows the name of everything I feed him, and even joins us for trips to the dog park.
I love to train animals and often take my dogs to shows where they can perform their tricks. Quincy did his first show when he was just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then, but he did them perfectly and never misbehaved or got nervous in front of the crowd.
Now he has a whole inventory (清单): he’ll come when called, walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese!”), and more. Quincy and my dogs perform regularly at schools, nursing homes, and charity events. Quincy can even “read” his tricks off cards, which always earns the most applause.
It’s hard to believe that the baby goat nobody wanted turned out to be one of the smartest and most good-natured animals I’ve ever had. He’s by far the sharpest of my bunch—just don’t tell the dogs!
4. Why did the author decide to adopt the goat?
A. It touched his heart. B. He could only find a goat.
C. A goat was always his favorite. D. Some experienced friends convinced him.
5. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Brave. B. Gentle. C. Innocent. D. Intelligent.
6. How does the author present the baby goat’s ability?
A. By citing figures. B. By listing examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a diagram.
7. Which words can best describe the author?
A. Generous and modest. B. Cautious and smart.
C. Humorous and warm-hearted. D. Optimistic and creative.

Rain forests are globally disappearing due to the expansion of farmlands. Some researchers are searching for smart ways to restore forests to reduce costs because planting trees is, to some extent, expensive. One possibility is called natural regeneration, which means letting the forests grow back by themselves without planting new trees.
While natural regeneration seems like a beautiful solution, we must be careful. If we just let all forests grow back naturally, we might miss some important areas. Many sensitive areas have suffered illegally from deforestation and may not regrow on their own, so we should immediately take care of these areas.
We then created two plans to restore 15 million hectares (公顷) of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Plan 1 focuses on places where trees can grow back by themselves. In Plan 2, we give nature a little hand by planting trees where they cannot grow back on their own. This helps bring back forests in all the ecologically sensitive areas. We also figured out which areas had the lowest overall restoration costs: the cost to plant trees plus financial losses because the farmers could no longer use the land for farming.
We found if we adopted Plan 1 and let nature recover 15 million hectares in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we would restore more places from small farms than places in large plantations (种植园). That would impact the farming activities of small farm owners, while large farming companies would continue their business as usual. Plan 2 aimed at planting new trees in the special places currently not covered by forests. Further, Plan 2 helped to reforest regions that did not have many trees left, which brought animals and plants back to regions where they had been lost.
Now that we have a plan, it is time to put it into action! Let’s make joint efforts and work together to make a big difference in saving our forests!
8. Why is natural regeneration called a smart way?
A. Farmlands are declining. B. It is environmentally friendly.
C. Planting trees is relatively costly. D. Sensitive areas may not restore themselves.
9. What does plan 2 show?
A. The vastness of rain forests. B. The necessity of human intervention.
C. The consequences of human activities. D. The possibility of natural regeneration.
10. Who might suffer more according to paragraph 4?
A. The small farm owners. B. Large farming companies.
C. Agricultural organizations. D. Residents in reforested regions.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To fuel a debate. B. To prove a theory.
C. To call for action. D. To present a phenomenon.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. C

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“In Plan 2, we give nature a little hand by planting trees where they cannot grow back on their own. This helps bring back forests in all the ecologically sensitive areas.(在计划2中,我们帮助大自然,在它们无法自行生长的地方植树。这有助于恢复所有生态敏感地区的森林)”可推知,在人类的干预下和帮助下,有些地区的植被等可以恢复。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“We found if we adopted Plan 1 and let nature recover 15 million hectares in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we would restore more places from small farms than places in large plantations (种植园). That would impact the farming activities of small farm owners, while large farming companies would continue their business as usual.(我们发现,如果我们通过计划1,让自然在巴西大西洋森林恢复1500万公顷,我们将从小型农场恢复比大型种植园更多的地方。这将影响小型农场主的农业活动,而大型农业公司将照常经营)”可知,小农场主们是最容易受到影响的。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Now that we have a plan, it is time to put it into action! Let’s make joint efforts and work together to make a big difference in saving our forests!(现在我们有了计划,是时候把它付诸行动了!让我们共同努力,共同努力,在拯救我们的森林方面有所作为!)”可推知,本文旨在呼吁人们采取行动保护热带雨林。故选C。
D
Roughly 42% of Americans are nearsighted today, compared to 25% in 1971. The World Health Organization predicts that about half of the world’s population will have nearsightedness by 2050. It’s apparent that our eyesight is becoming increasingly poor, but researchers are only now beginning to understand why.
Generally a childhood phenomenon, nearsightedness happens when the eyeball grows too long from front to back, taking on more of an oval (椭圆形) shape rather than a sphere (球形). Eyes have a “stop signal” so that they grow corresponding with the head, explains Gregory Schwartz, an associate professor at Northwestern University. However, that signal can be interrupted by genetic and environmental factors, which leads to our eyeballs growing a bit too much, leading to far-off objects looking out of focus. Signs you might have nearsightedness also include headaches, as well as eye stress and tiredness when doing certain activities such as driving or playing sports.
The increased use of screens, most of which are high contrast, like black text on a white page, or light text on a dark background, overstimulating our eyes, causing more eye growth in children and less time spent outdoors are to blame. A 2017 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found a connection between increased natural light exposure and a decrease in nearsightedness, particularly in children and young adults. Exposure to natural light stimulates dopamine, a chemical which helps regulate normal growth and development of the eyeball. Indoor lighting doesn’t do the trick.
Most people’s vision will stabilize in their teens, but some people develop nearsightedness later in life, typically between ages 20 and 40. Poor eyesight isn’t the only downside; people with nearsightedness are at a higher risk of developing eye issues as they age. That’s why regular eye exercise is crucial.
12. What is the function of the figures in paragraph 1?
A. To draw the attention of WHO. B. To introduce the research methods.
C. To explain the causes of nearsightedness. D. To illustrate the seriousness of nearsightedness.
13. What happens to the eyeballs of nearsighted children?
A. They are out of shape. B. They grow into a sphere.
C. They match the growth of heads. D. They distinguish far-off objects easily.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The overuse of screens. B. The causes of nearsightedness.
C. The benefits of protecting eyes. D. The influence of exposure to light.
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Eye issues of ageing. B. The ways to exercise eyes.
C. Key factors to affect eyesight. D. The downside of nearsightedness.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. B

【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The increased use of screens, most of which are high contrast, like black text on a white page, or light text on a dark background, overstimulating our eyes, causing more eye growth in children and less time spent outdoors are to blame. A 2017 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found a connection between increased natural light exposure and a decrease in nearsightedness, particularly in children and young adults. Exposure to natural light stimulates dopamine, a chemical which helps regulate normal growth and development of the eyeball.
根据最后一段中“Poor eyesight isn’t the only downside; people with nearsightedness are at a higher risk of developing eye issues as they age. That’s why regular eye exercise is crucial.(视力不佳不是唯一的缺点;随着年龄的增长,近视的人患眼部疾病的风险更高。这就是为什么定期的眼保健操是至关重要的。)”可知,作者可能会继续谈论锻炼眼睛的具体方法。故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There comes a time for every family when the parents have to apologize to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I stayed with our elder son in Los Angeles—our first visit in several years and the longest since he moved west in 2014. A whole week under his roof!
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel “advised” on our first night. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought is a concern. But I also got caught pulling extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen table on the second day and was instructed to use the dishcloth, which didn’t seem clean enough. More orders followed. Not to leave my out-of-date walking shoes sitting out, and did I even need such ugly footwear? Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning—it will warm up when we get to the park. Why drink so much soda water...
At last, on the third day, I got a little bit angry and I wondered how I’d raised such a tyrant (暴君) and even wanted to argue with Nathaniel. I wanted to tell him how rude he was before his mom and I planned to head back on the fourth day.
Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at Nathaniel and his sisters and brothers when they were young. “Some day, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want,” I’d say. “But now, you’ll have to do as we ask.” Now it was payback time. I remembered getting angry at my own father’s commands when growing up, how he always adjusted my collar or came into my room at dusk to draw the curtains.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文:
Feeling sorry, I walked to Nathaniel immediately. I patted him gently on his back and proposed a walk outside. Confused as he was, I let my heart out sincerely while walking along the river. I murmured by his side how annoyed I was under his “supervision” at the very beginning. Then I apologized to him for my misunderstanding and shared with him how I got along with his grandfather in the course of my growth. Letting out a sigh of relief at last, I told him I was so proud of his being a powerful adult now and I understood that it was time for him to grow up.
Hugging me tightly in tears, Nathaniel kissed me for my understanding. He looked at me into my eyes, saying: “Dad, never had I realized how bossy I was when I talked to you and Mom. Please forgive me!” In the remaining days, I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s household “dos and don’ts”, but with a touch of relaxation. As for my son, he tried to be our perfect baby by cleaning dishes after dinner, assuming he would do a better job than my wife and me or setting our daily outings, willingly driving everywhere. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.

Now he has a whole inventory (清单): he’ll come when called walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese!”), and more.
C
In Plan 2 we give nature a little hand by planting trees where they cannot grow back on their own.

A. They are out of shape. B. They grow into a sphere.

A. The overuse of screens. B. The causes of nearsightedness.
C. The benefits of protecting eyes. D. The influence of exposure to light.
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Eye issues of ageing. B. The ways to exercise eyes.
