Most Chinese people these days know what it is like to have an “English teacher”, since almost all pupils study English from their third year. Usually that first English teacher will be a young and lovely lady in primary school. But my first English teacher is none other than my father. Looking back, I can see that, when I was only a little girl, he created an English environment by providing me with flashcards, fun English-language toys and even dolls which can sing English songs! My interest in English had certainly been awakened when I began to learn English at school. Just imagine, he went a step further and asked me to learn New Concept English by myself! I was confused and even angry. I could not understand why a father could be so strict with his little girl. All the same, he never gave up and he gently insisted that I follow his ideas. At first, I read stories with tears in my eyes and I actually hated them because they were too difficult for me. In the end, I came to love the funny stories and, to be honest, my father was always there with a helping hand. I am sure that my English would never have got so far without his support. And that’s why my father is not only my first English teacher but also my lifelong teacher. He is the one who awoke my interest, who gave me confidence and who offered me much needed help.

Spending time outdoors has long been linked (联系) to better health. Gardening goes beyond just beautifying outdoor spaces—it can have a deep effect on our physical and mental (身心上的) health.
Gardening involves physical activity that works all the main muscle (肌肉) groups, which is helpful for overall health. “Activities such as digging, planting, weeding and harvesting require movement and can help to improve strength,” said Clayton, CEO of an online lawn care company. “Performing these activities regularly can help burn calories, and keep a healthy weight.”
Beyond burning calories and building muscle, lots of studies have shown that gardening can improve the immune system (免疫系统). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people get at least 150 minutes of exercise each week, and gardening is listed as a suitable activity. Doing garden work for that time each week can reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease. Additionally, spending time outdoors makes us get close to natural sunlight, which is important for vitamin D synth.
Gardening provides a chance for social connection, too. It can be a shared activity among family members, friends or neighbors, building relationships and a sense of belonging.
Gardening also offers cognitive (认知的) benefits. It excites the senses, improves focus and encourages problem-solving and creativity. It provides a chance to learn about plants, ecosystems and the environment, developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature.
8.What is Clayton’s attitude towards gardening?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear D.Uncaring.
9.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about gardening?
A.It improves focus. B.It is a waste of time.
C.It can keep a body in shape. D.It helps to reduce the risk of diseases.
10.How does gardening affect social connection according to the text?

11.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to Start a Garden B.Choose a Garden or Not
C.What Plants Grow Best in a Garden D.Start Gardening and Get the Health Benefits

Today’s grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media (社交媒体). People who are over 55 are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, which means that they will soon be the site’s second biggest user group—with 3. 5 million users aged 55-64 and 2. 9 million aged over 65.
Surprisingly, 44% of grandparents say they have “excellent” skills in using social media. Sheila, 67, of Swansea, Mass. would put herself in this group. “I joined Facebook to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. I also show off my garden when it’s in bloom (开花) or how happy my husband and I are when we go for a picnic to my family members. Without social media, I don’t think we would have the same relationship,” says Sheila.
Teenagers are spending so much time on their phones at home that they ignore their friends in real life. However, the elderly may not do the same. For example, Sheila has got in touch with old friends from school whom she hasn’t heard from in the past forty years. “We use Facebook to discuss when and where to meet,” she says. “It’s changed my life completely.”
Teenagers might have their parents to thank for their smartphone and social media addiction as their parents were the early users of the smartphone. Peter, 38 and father of two teenagers, reports that he used to be on his phone or personal computer endlessly. He says, “How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was always in front of a screen myself?” So, in the evenings and at weekends, he takes his SIM card out of his smartphone and puts it into an old-style mobile phone that can only make calls and send text messages.
12.What does the first paragraph show?
A.More and more old people are using social media.
B.Grandparents become famous on social media.
C.Kids teach their grandparents to surf online.
D.Facebook manages to increase its users.
13.What can we learn about Sheila?
A.She lives far away from her grandchildren.
B.She persuaded her friends to use social media.

D.She enjoys sharing her grandchildren’s life online.
14.What does the underlined word “ignore” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Look after. B.Learn from.

15.Why does Peter use his old-style mobile phone in the evenings and at weekends?

Lost & Found
Emily was very sad because her little sister drew pictures on her science project. This was not the first time that her sister had ruined her school work. So, Emily requested her parents to buy her a study table with drawers (抽屉) where she could safely keep her books.
Emily’s parents could not afford to buy a new table. However, they agreed to buy her a second-hand table. One day after school, Emily’s mother took her to the second-hand store so that she could buy the table of her choice. By accident, she opened a drawer in an old black table. And, guess what? A small plastic bag with some dollar bills!
“Maybe I have found somebody’s secret bag. Am I the luckiest twelve-year-old? My birthday is coming up soon. With this money, I can buy myself great presents. And maybe I can even buy things for my family.” Emily thought. She stared at it with greedy (贪婪的) eyes and quickly pushed the bag to the end of the drawer. She told her mother she wanted that black table and later it was organized in her room.
When everybody left, she locked the room, quickly opened the drawer and took the plastic bag with dollars out. There was a note in the money bag. It seemed that some old lady was saving the money for her children and grandchildren. She could hear her heart beat louder and louder when finally she counted twelve thousand dollars.
But now, with the money she had, she thought that she would have to make up many lies to spend it. She would have to hide the money all the time. She thought, “This money is not meant for me.” She had felt the worst fear of getting caught from the moment she thought of stealing.
Paragraph 1:
Finally, she called her parents into her room. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
