The exhibition will be located on Level 3 of Coe Library. It will be on view through Tuesday, May 31. The exhibition takes place at the same time as this year’s 150th anniversary of the creation of Yellowstone National Park. The posters in the exhibition serve the purpose of both advertising and art. “We’re thrilled to be working with Yellowstone collectors Jack and Susan Davís, and Larry and Thea Lancaster to bring this exhibition to the University of Wyoming as part of year-long celebrations recognizing Yellowstone’s 150th anniversary,” says Tamsen Hert, head of UW Libraries’ Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections. “This exhibition involves the history of printing, art, photography and advertising over 16 decades. The images reproduced are found on travel brochures, postcards and maps—many of which are held in our collections.” One poster from the exhibition—Henry Wellge’s “Yellowstone National Park” from1904—was recently purchased with donated funds and is now part of UW Libraries’ Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections. Wellge, a productive bird’s-eye-view artist, designed the piece for the Northern Pacific Railroad, which used it to advertise the park. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this large metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed. But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an incredible park, with beautiful gardens and great views of the city. The idea to turn the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a meeting to decide how to deal with the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a hall of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realized that the High Line had potential to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected. The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies ( 阳台) with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes between buildings, trees are thickly planted. Other sections have wide lawns ( 草 坪 ) and walkways with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years. 24. What does the underlined part “a dead weight” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Something with historical interest. B. Something with potential to be better. C. Something which is a danger to people. D. Something useless which slows progress. 25. Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line? A. They wanted to reopen the train line. B. They thought it had historical value. C. They were interested in improving the city. D. They thought it would become a good park. 26. Which of the following statements about the High Line is correct? A. All parts of it have the same atmosphere. B. The first part gradually became popular. C. One part of it remains the old way. D. Trees were thinly planted in all areas. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. Closing a train line. B. An unlikely place for a park. C. Protection of cultural relics. D. Improving city transport. C Hello everyone! D Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these places an almost universal attraction? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks? Well, one reason is the way they’re treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests” as they prefer to call them and to see that they enjoy themselves. All new employees, from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions I”. Here, they learn about the company’s history, how it is managed and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success. After passing “Traditions I”, the employees go on to more specialised training for their specific jobs. No detail is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four to eight hours of training a day. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds? We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the party.” Even Disney’s managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the managers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week helps them to see the company’s goals more clearly. All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world. As one long time business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them, is in my view the very reason for its success. I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis, successfully. It is what Disney does best.” 32. The main aim of the Disney employees is to . A. learn all parts of the business B. make their guests enjoy themselves C. be able to answer all kinds of questions D. keep their important guests happy 33. Each year, managers wear special service clothes and work in the park to . A. set a good example to employees B. remind themselves of their beginnings at Disney C. gain a better view of the company’s goals D. replace employees on holiday 34. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Tourists learn the history of Disney in its entertainment parks. B. Disney attracts people almost from all over the world. C. Other things being equal, there was a $4.20 decrease in the price of property for every foot one moved away from the greenbelt, and the average value of homes next to the greenbelt was 32% percent higher than those 3,200 feet away. Parks attract tourists. 38 As community landmarks, parks offer a marketing tool for cities to attract businesses and conferences. Parks can be used to hold festivals, concerts and athletics events, bringing additional boosts to the local economy. Green space provides rich ecosystem services. 39 The U.S. Forest Service found that over a 50-year lifetime, one tree produces $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250worth of soil erosion (流失). A park’s trees store water, reducing the rate at which it flows into a city’s stormwater treatment facilities. Parks increase the amount of a city’s pervious surfaces, which allow rainwater to pass slowly into the ground. 40 A. Your local city park may improve your health. B. Homebuyers prefer homes close to parks and open space. C. It makes a great contribution to the improvement of our living environment. D. They help fill hotel rooms and bring customers to local stores and restaurants. E. Building facilities to deal with that amount of stormwa ter would cost $38 million. F. Daddy closes his car door. He walks to the lychee tree in my grandmother’s front yard. “Hello, Family Tree,” Daddy says. There Daddy goes, treating that tree like it’s a person. I’m smiling at Daddy when the door opens and my grandmother shows up. I call her “Nainai.” a Chinese word for “Grandma.” Nainai used to live in China, in a province called Guangdong. That’s where she learned to grow lychees. “Hungry for lychees. Hannah?” Nainai asks. I shake my head. I don’t want them. Lychees look different from all the fruits I like. I laugh happily as Daddy climbs up the tree. The lychees are many and most are up high. After Nainai passes Daddy the cutter he cuts the end of a branch (树枝) heavy with fruit. “Daddy! Why are you cutting the tree you love?” Daddy smiles. “Don’t worry. Cutting the ends of branches doesn’t hurt Family Tree. It makes her stronger.” He cuts down more branches, and Nainai and I pick their fruit. Each lychee looks strange to me. Nainai eats a lychee. With a smile I drop my lychees into the boxes we will take to relatives. Nainai shares with everyone in our family. “Are you almost done?” I ask Daddy. “Not yet,” Daddy says. The branch he stands on seems not to support him. “Isn’t it dangerous up there?” “Nonsense.” Daddy picks a lychee. “You won’t hurt me will you, Family Tree?” There Daddy goes again. “Plunk (扑通一声)!” say the lychees when they hit the bottom of a box. Then I hear a loud sound of a branch breaking into pieces. Nainai starts shouting, and I walk around to face the tree. There’s Daddy on the ground again. I’m leaving this message in answer to your questions about the business studies course. Firstly, you asked when the course starts. It begins on the 12th of June and finishes on the 11th of July. At the beginning of the course, there are no lectures because we spend time watching business videos. So you won’t need to bring anything for the class as everything is provided. Don’t forget, however, that although you can bring your own notebook computer, if you wish, mobile phones are not allowed in the classroom. I am afraid these can disturb the classes. You said you are coming by car. Well, as it’s only a short course, you can use the visitors car park which is just beside the main entrance. We are only a short walk away. Just turn right after the science center, cross the staff car park, and you’ll see the door to the Business Studies Department in front of you. Finally, you also wanted to know if it’s possible to attend a language course while you are here. Well, the answer is yes. But we only have room on our Italian classes. Oh, no, actually, there’s one place on the Spanish course too. We usually offer French, Chinese, German, and Japanese as well. But there aren’t enough students for those classes this summer. If you want to apply for the business studies course, please sign up before the 5th of June. Thank you. A Yellowstone Poster Exhibition to Be on View at UW’s Coe Library A first-of-its-kind exhibition that focuses on the history of Yellowstone National Park posters will be on display at the University of Wyoming’s Coe Library beginning Tuesday, February 1. “Wonderland Illustrated” will present posters and poster-style illustrations of the park spanning from the 1870s through 2022. This is a unique piece, as posters such as this one were printed on soft paper and very few have survived. 21. How long will the exhibition “Wonderland Illustrated” last? A. Two weeks. B. Three months. C. Four months. D. One year. 22. What is a purpose of the exhibition? A. To remember a famous artist. B. To raise fund for Coe Library. C. To mark the anniversary of a national park. D. To tell the history of the University of Wyoming. 23. What do we know about the 1904 poster Henry Wellge designed? A. It is rare in the world. B. It is in black and white. C. It is printed on cloth. 根据第四段“We’re thrilled to be working with Yellowstone collectors Jack and Susan Davís, and Larry and Thea Lancaster to bring this exhibition to the University of Wyoming as part of year-long celebrations recognizing Yellowstone’s 150th anniversary(我们很高兴能与黄石收藏者杰克和苏珊·戴维斯以及拉里和西娅·兰开斯特合作,将这次展览带到怀俄明大学,作为纪念黄石公园150周年的为期一年的庆祝活动的一部分)”可知,展览的目的是纪念一个国家公园的周年纪念。故选C。 23. 根据最后一段“This is a unique piece, as posters such as this one were printed on soft paper and very few have survived.(这是一件独特的作品,因为像这样的海报是印在软纸上的,很少有幸存下来)”可知,1904年亨利·韦尔奇设计的海报在世界上很罕见。故选A。 B Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. D 25. B 26. C 27. 根据第一段“However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea.(然而,有一部分仍然留在曼哈顿一个叫切尔西的地区)”,划线单词的前半句话“Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, (随着餐馆、美术馆和公寓的建成,切尔西正变得高档起来)”以及第一段最后一句话“Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.(每个人都知道,在某个时候,它将不得不被移除)”可知,被保留下来的区域被叫做Chelsea,随着饭店、画廊和公寓被建,这里变成了高级场所。 根据第二段“David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. 根据最后一段“Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years.(只有最后一部分保持了过去五十年来的样子)”可知,High Line还有一部分保留了以前的样子。故选C。 27. 根据第一段“Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. B。 C Hello everyone! Meet my new friend Marco. He says Ciao! This means hello in his language. Marco traveled with me this month. When he showed me his country on the map, I was attracted by its shape. It looks like a high-heeled boot(高跟靴) in the Mediterranean Sea that’s kicking a strange-shaped ball. Can you find the name of this ball on the world map? Marco told me that he loves cars and that his country is well-known for super-fast cars like Ferrari,Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. Isn’t it cool? The people also love soccer here. They call it “Calcio.” He told me that they have won four World Cups. The most recent win was in 2006! When he shared this with me, he was very excited and full of pride. We visited the country’s capital and I was amazed to find that it was more than 2500 years old! We walked around and soon it was time for dinner. Marco told me that people there eat pasta (意大利面食) at least once a day. The different sauces and toppings(酱汁和佐料)mean they never get bored of it. Also, they love including seasonal vegetables in their dinners. I couldn’t wait to enjoy the pizza and pasta with different toppings and sauces. The cappuccino and focaccia bread also made me happy. It’s no wonder that the world has adopted (采用) so much of their food! The people in this country celebrate many holidays and enjoy eating big meals with their family. The festive atmosphere (节日氛围) makes everyone happy. I was lucky to travel to this country in March and enjoy the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, or La fiera del Libro per Ragazzi. It is held for four days every year. We also visited the Colosseum, Panthon, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which was really wonderful! Before I said goodbye to Marco, I made a promise to visit again. Can you guess the name of this country? 28. What did the author mention to describe Marco’s country in the first paragraph? A. Its shape. B. Its population. C. Its industries. D. Its national sport. 29. How did Marco feel when he brought up soccer? A. Sad. B. Proud. C. Worried. D. Thankful. 30. What can we infer about the food in Marco’s country? A. It is mixed with a lot of foreign food. B. It has spread around the world. C. It makes Marco feel bored. D. It is very simple. 31. What is the purpose of the text? A. To show a friendship. B. To celebrate a festival. C. To introduce a country. D. To explain a cultural difference. A 29. B 30. B 31. 故选A。 29. 根据第二段“He told me that they have won four World Cups. The most recent win was in 2006! When he shared this with me, he was very excited and full of pride. 根据第三段“ It’s no wonder that the world has adopted (采用) so much of their food! 可推测出Marco国家的食物在全世界都比较受欢迎,传播广泛,所以B选项“It has spread around the world. 文章通篇都在介绍Macro的国家的一些风土人情,包括国家形状,足球文化,饮食等,结合最后一段“Can you guess the name of this country? C。 D Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. (运用了连词that引导宾语从句) [高分句型2]I would expect it to be a water park where we can see the interesting mysteries of the underwater world and do various exciting water activities. “Ready to pick lychees (荔枝), Hannah?” Daddy asks as we pull into my grandmothers driveway. “Ready.” I smile and get out of the car. Near his feet is a broken branch! Daddy says, “The branch broke so slowly and lowered me softly down.” ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Daddy leans (倚靠) against the tree, “Do you like it now you’ve tasted it?” ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【参考范文】     Daddy says, “The branch broke so slowly and lowered me softly down.” He points to where the low-hanging branch used to connect to the tree and laughs uneasily. Nainai is worried. Daddy gives a thumbs-up. “I’m good.” He hands me a lychee.“A special gift from Family Tree.” I’m nervous to taste the lychee, but I don’t want to make Daddy sad. I take the lychee’s ugly skin off and look at the soft fruit before I eat. Then I try it. The lychee sure tastes sweet. Daddy leans against the tree and asked “Do you like it now that you’ve tasted it?” Instead of answering, I take another lychee from a box. This time, Daddy laughs at me. “Family Tree’s got a few surprises up in her branches, but she always grows good lychees.” I smile as I eat my second lychee. Then I touch our tree softly like Daddy does as if I finally understand the meaning of family. “Delicious lychees, Family Tree.” 看;注视:look at/regard ②.嘲笑:laugh at/play jokes on ③.理解:understand/get to know 情绪类 ①.难过的:be sad/be broken-hearted ②.担心的:be worried/be anxious [高分句型1] I’m nervous to taste the lychee, but I don’t want to make Daddy sad.
