They’re Moonwalkers, battery-powered shoes with wheels. They are billed as “the world’s fastest shoes”. How do Moonwalkers work? Fix Moonwalkers to your shoes, power them on, and begin walking. The artificial intelligence sottware driving Moonwalkers measures and adjusts (调整) on-the-fly to both the terrain (地形) you’re on and the way you walk, providing safe and enjoyable walking experience. Moonwalkers move only when you do. They sense when you’re speeding up or slowing down. LOCK mode allows you to go up and down stairs confidently. Why do you choose Moonwalkers? ·Walk at the speed of a run: Get to where you’re going in less than half the time it normally takes. With a top speed of 7 mph, Moonwalkers improve every step. ·Expand (扩大) your footprint: Moonwalkers make walking many city blocks, even further, no sweat. ·Less stress: Less walking equals less stress on your body. Moonwalkers feature a user-friendly system that helps you naturally maintain mobility and balance. ·Freedom to go anywhere: Tested on dirt and much more, Moonwalkers can handle our current city and allow you to walk a hill like it’s nothing. Also, Moonwalkers can survive walking through rain. Despite their wide uses, they are not roller skates, so they do not freewheel, ever. What is the maximum user weight? Moonwalkers can support a maximum user weight of 220lbs (100kg). If you weigh more than 220lbs, you can still use Moonwalkers but will experience slightly reduced performance in certain edge cases. 21. What can we know about Moonwalkers? A. They are powered by walking. B. They help with stair climbing. C. They are assisted by technology. D. They can replace ordinary shoes. 22. With Moonwalkers, users may ________. A. walk as fast as they like B. practise their skating skills C. challenge their senses of balance D. travel further with less tiredness 23. According to the passage, which of the following might affect the Moonwalkers’ function? A. The hilly terrain. B. The rainy weather. C. The user weight. D. The walking distance. B In 2022, a New Zealand woman became the first to receive a gene-editing treatment to permanently lower her cholesterol (胆固醇). The woman had heart disease, along with an inherited risk for high cholesterol. But scientists behind the experimental treatment are considering how it could help pretty much anyone. The trial is a potential turning point for CRISPR, the editing tool they used. Since the technology was first programmed to edit genomes (基因组) about a decade ago, we’ve seen CRISPR from scientific labs made much progress. But the first experimental treatments have focused on rare genetic disorders. They are working on more possibilities treating common disease like high cholesterol. The cholesterol-lowering treatment, developed by Verve Therapeutics, relies on a form of gene editing called base editing, or “CRISPR 2.0”. It’s a more targeted approach. Instead of simply making cuts to shut off specific genes, scientists can now exchange a single DNA base for another. In theory, this should be safer because you’re less likely to cut an important gene by mistake, and you can be less likely to make mistakes that may occur when DNA repairs itself after being cut. An even newer form of CRISPR could take things further still. Prime Editing — or “CRISPR 3.0” — allows scientists to put chunks (块) of DNA into a genome. If it works in people, it could let scientists replace disease-causing genes. Together, these newer forms of CRISPR could broaden the possibilities of gene editing to take on many conditions — not all of them genetic. Someday, people may have the option to add genes thought to protect against high blood pressure, or certain diseases, to their genetic code. All CRISPR treatments are experimental at this point, and we don’t know if they’re safe. Some argue we should focus on treating those with severe diseases in the meantime. But if these new forms of CRISPR do work, they could help many others. 24. What are scientists focusing on in the gene-editing treatment? A. Its great success. B. Its wider application. C. Its immediate effects. D. Its target patients. 25. Why does the author think that CRISPR 2.0 is theoretically safer? A. It can shut off specific genes. B. It can avoid potential errors. C. It’s likely to reduce DNA base damage. D. It provides protection for the genome. 26. What could be the innovative practice of Prime Editing? A. Making cuts to shut off specific genes. B. Providing treatment for genetic diseases. C. Exchanging a single DNA base for another. D. Taking the place of disease-causing genes. 27. What can be inferred from the text? A. CRISPR treatments haven’t entered human trials. B. Prime editing is being tested in the scientific lab. C. Prime editing targets diseases caused by genetic disorders. D. Verve’s cholesterol-lowering treatments are approved for use. C Like almost all new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started snapping pictures of their son, Noah, from the moment he was born. When he was about three months old, Elizabeth noticed something odd when taking his picture. The flash on their camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash were being reflected back at the camera by something. When Elizabeth mentioned it to their doctor, she shined a light into Noah’s eye, and saw the same white reflection. She realized there was something wrong and arranged for a complete examination for Noah right away. As the result showed, a white reflection is a telltale sign of retinal cancer and that was exactly what Noah had. He endured months of painful treatments, but doctors ultimately could not save his eye. However, Noah’s condition was treatable if caught early. Bryan Shaw couldn’t help but wonder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every picture of Noah and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently. Bryan, a chemistry professor found by the time Noah was four months old, it appeared in approximately 25 percent of the pictures taken of him. It was too late for Noah’s eye, but Bryan was bent on putting his hard-won insights to good use. He created a database that charted the cancer’s appearance in every photo. He also collected photos and data from eight other children with the same condition. Armed with the data, he began to work with colleagues to develop an app that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for white eye and can be used as a kind of ophthalmoscope (检眼镜): White Eye Detector, and it is now available for free on Google Play and in Apple’s App Store. “I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this.” Bryan told the interviewer. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only can this software save vision, but it can save lives.” 28. What did Elizabeth find when taking pictures of Noah? A. A white spot appeared in Noah’s right eye. B. Noah’s left eye was unusually red. C. Her son developed retinal cancer. D. Her camera failed to function. 29. How did the doctor react after hearing Elizabeth’s description? A. She claimed everything was fine with Noah’s eye. B. She realized she could do nothing to save Noah’s eye. C. She ignored her doubt based on previous experience. D. She had Noah thoroughly examined almost without delay. 30. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3? A. The first picture of Noah was taken 12 days after his birth. B. Noah’s condition was by no means incurable with early detection. C. The white spot appeared in a quarter of the pictures taken of Noah. D. Bryan looked through the photos to find a cure for Noah’s disease. 31. Which of the following best describes Bryan’s creation? A. Easily-earned. B. Well-received. C. Far-reaching. D. Time-consuming. D With the ocean covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said scientists and researchers had depended on sonar (声呐) technologies to understand and map the sea floor which had charted only about 10% of the world’s ocean. For the ocean and coastal waters in the US, the number is just around 35%. We know less about our planet’s ocean than what we know about the far side of the moon or the surface of Mars. Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera. Researchers have used ships to recharge cameras or observed with a camera tied to a ship to solve the issue, which is expensive and unsuitable for long-term observations. Recently, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken a major step to iron out this problem by developing a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that could harvest energy underwater on its own for long periods. To keep power consumption as low as possible, the researchers used off-the-shelf, ultra-low-power imaging sensors. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and sends image data wirelessly through the water. The camera is powered by sound. It changes mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment. After getting and encoding image data, the camera also uses sound waves to send the data to a receiver that reconstructs the image. Those sound waves could come from any source, like a passing ship or marine life. As it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before getting it back, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species. Now that researchers have demonstrated a working prototype (原型), they plan to enhance the device so it is practical in real-world settings. For future application, these cameras may be used to take images of ocean pollution and create more accurate models to monitor climate change to better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world, and advance various undersea scientific fields. 32. What do the data in paragraph 1 mainly show? A. Undersea exploration is poor in the US. B. Much of the planet’s ocean remains unexplored. C. The mapping of the sea floor is time-consuming. D. Technology development matters a lot to sea observation. 33. What limits the researchers’ undersea exploration according to the text? A. The complexity of the sea environment. B. The concern about potential sea pollution. C. The shortage of investment in ocean exploration. D. The inability to effectively power underwater cameras. 34. What does the underlined phrase “iron out” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Overcome. B. Face. C. Analyze. D. Illustrate. 35. Which of the following can best describe the MIT underwater camera? A. Secure and stable. B. Expensive but effective. C. Impractical but advanced. D. Self-sufficient and energy-saving. The history of the school bus can date back to 1886 when Wayne Works company made horse-drawn carriages (四轮马车) known as “school wagons” or “kid hacks” in Indiana. 36 In the early 1900s, the car industry was beginning to develop fast. This gave Wayne Works a great opportunity to improve its carriages. 37 But the design remained mostly the same as that of the previous ones, with students sitting along the walls of the bus while facing inside. In 1927, a man built the first bus that primarily used steel. 38 Still, parents were increasingly concerned for children’s safety. This led to a turning point in the history of the school bus in 1939, when a conference was organised at Manhattan College to develop school bus standards. Many new national standards were created, determining everything from seating designs to the famous yellow colour that school buses still sport today. 39 Yellow is quite eye-catching to human beings. The colour is easy to see in the early morning and evening light when school buses usually operate. 40 For example, a variety of changes have been made to enable the school bus to not only be safer but also have better fuel economy, be easier to drive, etc. The most creative approach among all of these is probably a kind of stop signal arm that warns traffic of a stop in progress, which states began to require in the early 1950s. A. Horses were easy to control. B. Not all chose to paint their buses yellow. C. The reason why the colour was chosen was simple. D. Before then, many children simply walked to school. E. Now, school buses have had many more improvements. F. The company managed to make its carriages powered by engines. G. Before long, Wayne Works introduced the first all-steel school bus body with safety glass windows. Alexander Graham Bell hated spending summertime in Washington, DC. Humans have imagined flying 56 prehistoric times. Even with the invention of the plane and the increasing popularity of air travel, the ancient question stay s with us: What if we could 57 (simple) spread our arms and fly like a bird? For many centuries, people tried to achieve this by attaching man-made wings to their arms and back. Today the dream becomes a 58 (real) because people have invented 59 suit called the wingsuit. This suit allows skydivers 60 (jump) out into the air, spread their arms, and fly through the air. Why does the wingsuit have such 61 (impress) ability? Sometimes called birdman suits, wingsuits have strong fabric(织物)between the legs and under the arms, 62 gives jumpers a great surface area to lift and control flying. As you can imagine, wingsuit flying can be fun, but also can be very dangerous. In the past, some pioneers 63 (kill) because of a very small mistake. So people 64 (try) flying with the wingsuit must receive long-time training 65 (they). Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you for attending our company’s news conference. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thank you. Witnessing the impact of the disease firsthand, Hemesh was awakened to the seriousness of the situation. One night, Hemesh walked into the kitchen only to discover that his grandmother had left the gas stove (炉) on after making tea. Shocked by the dangerous consequences Alzheimer’s disease could bring about, he couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if he hadn’t been there. Hemesh’s worries increased as he observed his grandmother’s behavior. She would wake up in the early hours of the morning, believing she was on a train, and wander outside aimlessly. This wandering tendency could potentially lead her to get lost or put herself in risky situations. Determined to make a difference, Hemesh engaged himself in extensive research about Alzheimer’s disease and its symptomatic (症状的) progression. Through his studies, he discovered that wandering was a common problem among dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease. Inspired by his newfound knowledge and fueled by his desire to help, Hemesh told his family, “I can’t just stand by and watch this happen. I need to do something to keep Grandma safe. I think I have an idea that might help not just her, but others in similar situations.” With firm determination, he developed an inventive answer to the wandering dilemma, a device he called the Guardian Companion. It was a wearable device, similar to a smartwatch, specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients. It integrated advanced GPS technology and a panic button to assist those who tended to wander, ensuring their safety and well-being. After the device got its official approval, Hemesh happily went to try it on for his grandmother. As Anne put on the Guardian Companion, Hemesh explained how it worked. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 3 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 1. 21. C 22. D 23. 24. B 25. B 26. D 27. A 29. D 30. B 31. 根据文章第二段“The flash on their camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash were being reflected back at the camera by something.(相机上的闪光灯在诺亚左眼中心产生了典型的红点,但右眼中心有一个白点,几乎就像闪光灯被什么东西反射回相机一样。)” 故选A项。 29. 根据文章第二段“When Elizabeth mentioned it to their doctor, she shined a light into Noah’s eye, and saw the same white reflection. She realized there was something wrong and arranged for a complete examination for Noah right away.(当伊丽莎白向医生提起这件事时,她用一束光照着诺亚的眼睛,看到了同样的白色倒影。她意识到有些不对劲,马上为诺亚安排了一次全面检查。)”可知,医生听到伊丽莎白的描述后她几乎毫不迟延地给诺亚做了全面检查。故选D项。 30. 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“However, Noah’s condition was treatable if caught early. Bryan Shaw couldn’t help but wonder whether there were signs he’d missed.(然而,如果及早发现,诺亚的病情是可以治疗的。布莱恩·肖不禁怀疑自己是否漏掉了什么迹象。)”可知,如果及早发现,诺亚的病情绝不是无法治愈的。故选B项。 31. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“This disease is tough to detect. Not only can this software save vision, but it can save lives.(这种疾病很难发现。这个软件不仅可以挽救视力,还可以挽救生命。)”可知,布莱恩创造的这款软件是有深远意义的,所以可以用“影响深远的”这个词来描述布莱恩的创造。故选C项。 D With the ocean covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said scientists and researchers had depended on sonar (声呐) technologies to understand and map the sea floor which had charted only about 10% of the world’s ocean. 32. B 33. D 34. A 35. For the ocean and coastal waters in the US, the number is just around 35%.(由于海洋覆盖了地球表面的70%以上,美国国家海洋和大气管理局表示,科学家和研究人员依靠声纳技术来了解和绘制海底地图,而海底地图只占世界海洋面积的10%左右。 根据第二段中的“Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera.(缺乏观察的部分原因是水下摄像机的供电困难。)” 根据第二段中的“Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera.(缺乏观察的部分原因是水下摄像机的供电困难。)” 结合画线短语后的“by developing a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that could harvest energy underwater on its own for long periods.(他们开发了一种无需电池的无线水下相机,这种相机可以在水下长时间收集能量。)” 故选A项。 35. 根据倒数第二段中的“The camera is powered by sound. It changes mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment.(这台摄像机是由声音驱动的。 可知,该摄像机将声波转化成电能为成像和通信提供动力,由此可知,该相机可以自给自足,结合下文中的“As it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before getting it back, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species.(由于它不需要电源,相机可以连续运行数周才返回,使科学家能够在海洋的偏远地区寻找新物种。)” The history of the school bus can date back to 1886 when Wayne Works company made horse-drawn carriages (四轮马车) known as “school wagons” or “kid hacks” in Indiana. 36. D 37. F 38. G 39. C 40. 56. since 57. simply 58. reality 59. a 60. to jump 61. impressive 62. which 63. were killed 64. trying 65. themselves 【解析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了人类长久以来对飞翔的向往以及现代翼装飞行的实现。 56. allow sb. to do sth是固定短语,意为“允许某人做某事”,故填to jump。 61. pioneers和kill之间是被动关系,且根据时间状语In the past可知,要用一般过去时的被动语态,故填were killed。 64. Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you for attending our company’s news conference. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you for attending our company’s news conference. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【参考范文】 As Anne put on the Guardian Companion, Hemesh explained how it worked. He reassured her that it would help keep her safe. With a mixture of curiosity and skepticism, Anne agreed to give it a try. The device fit comfortably on her wrist. Hemesh walked his grandmother through the features, showing her how to use the panic button. Anne’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, and for the first time since her diagnosis, she felt a sense of regained independence. In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. Not only did it provide a sense of security for Anne, but it also relieved the constant worry for her loved ones. The device brought peace of mind to the entire family, knowing that Anne was protected even when they couldn’t be by her side. Hemesh’s creation had truly transformed dementia care, and he found himself on a new mission to make the device accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease alone. 段落续写: ①由第一段首句内容“As Anne put on the Guardian Companion, Hemesh explained how it worked. ②由第二段首句内容“In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. 词汇激活 行为类 ①演示/展示:show/display/reveal/present ②提供:provide/offer/give ③带来/导致:bring/produce/cause ④知道/了解:know/learn about/be aware of/make sure 情绪类 ①希望/信心:with a glimmer of hope/wishfully/hopefully ②担心/焦虑:constant worry/anxiety [高分句型1]. Not only did it provide a sense of security for Anne, but it also relieved the constant worry for her loved ones.(使用了“Not only…” The device brought peace of mind to the entire family, knowing that Anne was protected even when they couldn’t be by her side.(“knowing that Anne was protected even when they couldn’t be by her side”为现在分词作状语,且that引导从句,作动词“knowing”的宾语从句) [高分句型3]. Hemesh’s creation had truly transformed dementia care, and he found himself on a new mission to make the device accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease alone.(由and连接前后两个并列句;“ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease alone”为现在分词作状语,且that引导从句作动词“ensuring”的宾语从句) ( 3 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!
